Blended Librarian Webcast: Collaborating With Faculty on Information Literacy Instruction: Using Visual Methods to Enhance Student Learning

Steven Bell and John Shank, co-founders of the Blended Librarians Online Learning Community and their guests, Laurel Cornell and Carrie Donovan, invite you to join them for the live webcast, “Collaborating With Faculty on Information Literacy Instruction: Using Visual Methods to Enhance Student Learning” which will take place on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 3 pm. EDT.

Event Description:
Students’ ability to create visual work is important in their understanding and learning of complex concepts. While visual literacy is a growing phenomenon of interest amongst librarians in a variety of settings, visual methods for teaching are centered around the learner’s ability to take in new knowledge and express it in an original, visual form. In this session, two members of Indiana University’s Visual Methods Research Group will explain their research in exploring visual teaching methods, as well as their collaborative efforts to integrate information literacy into an undergraduate course using visual methods.

Guest Presenter Bios:

Laurel Cornell, Professor of Sociology, Indiana University, spent the first two-thirds of her research career working in demography, gender and Japanese studies. She used quantitative historical data from villages in early modern Japan (1600-1868) to examine a variety of comparative questions relating to household structure, marriage, divorce, gender roles, aging, and mortality. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Social Relations, Johns Hopkins University. Professor Cornell returned to graduate school and received a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia in 2003. She is interested in large public projects — especially those involving disused industrial sites — and in public art. In her teaching Professor Cornell emphasizes visual methods of learning and student involvement in the community (service-learning).

Carrie Donovan, Instructional Services Librarian, Indiana University, is the librarian for Gender Studies and the Head of Teaching & Learning for the Indiana University Libraries, where she works with students, faculty, and instructors to connect the libraries to student learning. An instruction librarian for ten years, Carrie has explored a variety of methods and strategies for helping undergraduates understand information-seeking and their role in it. Her research areas of interest include visual teaching methods, discipline-focused information literacy, first year experience initiatives, and teacher development/training for librarians and future librarians.

Securing REST-Based Services with Access Control Service

Abstract: The Access Control Service (ACS), part of Windows Azure platform AppFabric, makes it easy to secure REST-based services using a simple set of standard protocols. In addition to enabling secure calls to REST-based services from any client, the ACS uniquely makes it possible to secure calls from client-side script, and enables federation scenarios with REST-based services. This webcast will provide a tour of ACS features and demonstrate scenarios where the ACS can be employed to secure REST-based WCF services and other web resources. You’ll learn how to configure ACS, learn how to request a token from the ACS, and learn how applications and services can authorize access based on the ACS token.

Michele Leroux Bustamante

Michele Leroux Bustamante brings a well-rounded skill set to the IDesign, including expertise not just in architecture and technology but also in interoperability, management, and operations. Michele is not only an IDesign Chief Architect, she is also Microsoft Regional Director for San Diego, Microsoft MVP for Connected Systems and a BEA Technical Director. In addition, Michele is a member of the board of directors for the International Association of Software Architects (IASA). With over 15 years of experience designing enterprise systems, prior to IDesign Michele has held senior executive positions at several corporations. She has assembled and organized software development teams from the ground up, implemented processes for all aspects of the software development lifecycle, and facilitated many successful large-scale enterprise application deployments, including capital fund raising, sales, and business development efforts. Michele specializes in training, mentoring and high-end architecture consulting services focusing on Web services, scalable and secure architecture design for .NET, federated security scenarios, web services, interoperability and globalization architecture. She participates in Software Design Reviews for products in the Microsoft roadmap, including WCF and CardSpace. During the Beta 1 phase Michele participated in prototyping elements of the CardSpace technology for the product team. Michele has been advisor to University of California, San Diego Extension since 1994, establishing several successful certificate programs. Michele is a member of the International .NET Speakers Association (INETA); a frequent conference presenter at major technology conferences such as Tech Ed, PDC, SD and Dev Connections. Michele is the conference chair for SD’s Web Services/SOA and Web Development tracks; and she regularly publishes in several technology journals. The cliché goes “Hope is NOT a strategy.” Yet many business leaders were HOPING that a vaccine for the H1N1 flu would be the answer to minimizing workforce absence and illness during the annual flu season. With the neededvaccines in such short supplylargely unavailable that even the most vulnerable demographicscannot get them, it’s time to developanother strategy.

OSHA, has been developing business emergency training programs for years. They joined forces with the University of Findlay’s All Hazards Training Center (AHTC) to produce a timely video webcast for business owners and executives. This training tool, “Pandemic: Crisis and Response”, is available online for free viewing.

In addition to the actual video itself, this OSHA flu response training site offers several planning aids viewers can use for their business. These include:

a. A flowchart of key planning concepts to leave with your planning teams,
b. A pandemic planning template that you can apply to your own business,
c. A list of other relevant training resources.
d. A FAQs section that handles topics that have come up from other webcast viewers,

“Pandemic: Crisis and Preparation” is the newest of the All Hazards Training Center’s series of ALERT free online training webcasts. ALERT stands for “Actual Learning Environment Response Training” and is a state-of-the-art online training delivery system that combines professionally-produced video – often captured live during the webcast – with interviews of topicexperts or panels and viewer question and answer participation. ALERT webcasts have received accolades from viewers for their impact, relevance and convenience.

This special H1N1 Flu Panedemic training webcast was developed in order to address how a business should plan for and manage through the H1N1 flu crisis. Primary topics covered are:

1. How to protect employees from infection.
2. How to secure the key factors of production – materials, supplier services, funding – when those entities are undergoing their own business disruption.
3. How to cross-train employees for continued functioning of key positions.
4. How to set up satelliteremote stocks of equipment and supplies available to unaffected employees to keep them functioning away from an “infected” headquarters.

Watch “Pandemic” Crisis and Response” from OSHA and the Findlay’s All Hazards Training Center and begin the planning process for long term business survival in the face of H1N1 or other prolonged external pandemic threats to your company.

The All Hazards Training Center has grown into an organization that provides adult-education, training and information-transfer programs focusing on environmental, safety and occupational health (ES&H), as well as security management and emergency/disaster preparedness. This has been accomplished by developing/delivering effective and practical educational, training and consulting programs globally through: practical hands-on experience; various traditional delivery techniques; state-of-the-art distance learning techniques, including interactive webcasting; customized training program delivery at client locations; and contemporary and relevant academic degree programs.

EU -instituutiot ovat mielenkiintoni, johtuen ehkä ensimmäisen akateemisen tutkintoni taustoista tai sitten vaimoni ammatinvalinnasta. Ennen seurasin politiikkaa asiasisältönä, nyt enemmän ilmiönä. Euroopan Parlamentin nuorin jäsen, suomensukulainen Emilie Turunen (vihr- Tanska, 25-v.) on ottanut tämän kaupungin haltuun. Hän on tehnyt itsensä tutuksi maan rajoista riippumatta.

Emilie mainosti Happens In Brussels- Tweeter -palvelussa usealla eri kielellä omaa chattituokiota, joka pidettiin Facebookin kautta. Idea on mainio! Ei tupailtoja, ei kuivaa blogia, vaan olla läsnä. Ei vaadi teknistä osaamista, ei vaadi kalliita IT resursseja. Ainoastaan hiukan mielikuvitusta ja uskallusta!

Samaa ideaa olen aikoinaan miettinyt kun tein omaa MBA-lopputyötä. Aiheena oli sijoittajaviestintä ja uusien teknisten työkalujen käyttö. Siitä ajasta (3 vuotta sitten) tekniikka on mennyt reilusti eteenpäin, mutta harva pörssiyhtiö on aidosti mukana sijoittajien arjessa. Mikään ei estä heitä tekemästä sijoittajaviestintää käyttäen uusia työkaluja. Perinteinen pörssitiedote pitää olla, mutta sen sijaan että tehdään sinä kysyt- me vastaamme valituille tahoille tiedoitustilaisuus, niin lyhyt videokatsaus, facebook (jokin muu väline) kysymyksiä ja paljoin vastauksia palvelu toimisi paremmin, herättäisi sijoittajat ja yhtiöstä puhuttaisiin enemmän, mikä nostaa mielenkiintoa yhtiötä kohtaan.

Mutta tämä koskee myös kaikkia muita yrityksiä. Koska minä olen yhden miehen firma, ja minulla on harvoin niin paljon tiedotettavaa, niin siitä huolimatta ajattelin kokeilla jotain vastaavaa. Jos kokeilusta ei tule mitään, niin ainakin tiedän, mitä pitää tehdä toisin, kun teen vastaavan palvelun seuraavalle asiakkaalle. Tänä päivänä tekniikka antaa mahdollisuuden kokeilla pienessä mittakaavassa useaa asiaa ja sen jälkeen jatkojalostaa parhaat ideat isoiksi.

Innovaatioworkshop voidaan tänään lyhyellä varoitusajalla järjestää Skypen lisäksi Facebookin kautta. Riittää kun olet Facebookissa ja linkkaat minut kaveriksi. Pääset ainakin osaksi oppimisprosessia ja seuraavan kerran kun jokin yhtiö tekee jotain vastaavaa, niin voit sanoa että tuo juttu on jo niin passe.
