[NY Times Dot Earth] In a speech clearly aimed at finding a middle ground between the stances of rich and poor countries, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia said that all countries would benefit from a trustworthy system of measuring and verifying progress on emissions – a need that the United States, particularly, has insisted must be part of any agreement here. If we all set our respective targets, we need to know if we are making progress,” the president said. “Unless we get the numbers right, we will argue in circles and it will be difficult for us to have effective plan to deal with global carbon emissions.”

When I started Technologizer, I thought it would be a place…and it is, of course. But it turns

When I started Technologizer, I thought it would be a place…and it is, of course. But it turns out to be a place that has outposts all over the Internet, often at sites that are a lot bigger than this one. Here are two current examples.

First, I’m going to be watching another Webcast and guest-tweeting as I do so. This one’s a conversation with Richard Florida, the author of The Rise of the Creative Class. It’s at 2pm ET this Monday, December 14th. Here’s where you get more information or just show up at that time to participate. (All visitors can tweet the interview directly from the site, if they’re so inclined, and some tweets will be picked to show up right alongside the talk while it’s in progress.)

Second, I’ve written another guest post for BingTweets. As usual, the general theme is the future of search, and this time I wrote about how much I’d like to see search impact TV just as much as it has the Web. The post’s called “The Search for Something to Watch.”

If you like Technologizer, I hope you’ll check out these extracurricular activities.

Yesterday, my colleague Ruud Janssen and I delivered a presentation called the 2010 Event Technology

Yesterday, my colleague Ruud Janssen and I delivered a presentation called the 2010 Event Technology Shopping List at EIBTM. I will post the slides and video soon. But, first I wanted to share some of the thinking that was at the heart of our work.

Worlds Are Colliding

The digital world and the face to face worlds are colliding and I see several new opportunities emerging for events. Yesterday, we tackled these four new opportunities that have emerged for events to use event technology to transform the event:

Extending the Meeting

Including More People

Improved Interaction

New Formats

Extending the Meeting

We have the opportunity to stretch event experiences from 1-2 days to several days, weeks and months. Rather than looking at the meeting as an isolated event – we can look at it as one point in a conversation stream. By using your digital touch points wisely, you can start relationships earlier and change the nature of the face-to-face interactions onsite. Webinars, webcasts, social networks and social media tools are some of the technologies making this possible.

Including More People

The people that come to your event are a subset of your event community. For one reason or another, there are some people that cannot come to your event. It has nothing to do with you, your program, the venue, the destination or the price – they just can’t come. Rather than ignore these “potential” attendees – the technology tools like the backchannel and live streaming help you include them in your event experience.

Increasing Interaction

Attendees are smarter than they have ever been. The gap between the experts on stage and the attendees in the audience has never been smaller. The collaboration tools that we have at our disposal have made it easier than ever to create this interaction. Equally important – there are a large number of audience response keypads, gadgets, handheld devices and mobile applications that put the power in the attendee’s hand and make it easier for you to engage them: Ask questions, collect ideas, vote, etc.

Alternative Formats

We still live in a world where good projects (meetings, marketing plans, etc.) are being cut in favor of better projects. Telepresence and Virtual Events are two event formats that have emerged as viable lost cost alternatives (or compliments) to full face-to-face events. While some face-to-face diehards may initially raise their noses at these two formats – I suggest that you take a closer look. I would prefer that you keep some options in your back pocket and fight for your projects – rather than accept defeat when the finance department and management want to cut your event.

Bottom Line

The collision between the digital world and the face-to-face world creates several new opportunities for events. By framing the discussion in terms of these new opportunities – you can strategically approach technology rather than look at it tactically.

That’s my take – what do you think?

Notes from webinar I lead in October. Business Intelligence for the Consumer Goods Industry Business

Notes from webinar I lead in October.

Business Intelligence for the Consumer Goods Industry

Business Insights’ portfolio of consumer goods management reports are designed to help you make well informed and timely business decisions. We understand the problems facing today’s consumer goods executives when trying to drive your business forward, and appreciate the importance of accurate, up-to-date, incisive product, market and company analysis. We help you to crystallize your business decisions.

The strength of our consumer goods research and analysis is derived from access to unparalleled databases and libraries of information and the use of proprietary analytic techniques. Business Insights reports are authored by independent experts and contain findings garnered from dedicated primary research. Our authors’ leading positions secure them access to interview key executives and to establish which issues will be of greatest strategic significance for the industry.

Our consumer goods portfolio of reports can be used across a wide range of business functions to assess market conditions and devise future strategies and cover the food and drinks, ingredients, packaging, health, toiletries and cosmetics categories and key consumer issues including eRetail and marketing.

Key issues examined by this report

• Ethical packaging. Green packaging is a primary concern for the food and drinks industry. Using less packaging will become a key focus over the next five years, and this is especially important for convenience products that rely heavily on packaging benefits such as multi-packs, compartment packaging and portioning.
• Health concerns. Health is an increasingly important driver of convenient products, and marketing is becoming multi-faceted with the evolution of food and drink offering more advanced health benefits such as weight control and other specific health concerns.
• Emerging markets. Growth in regions such as Asia-Pacific and Latin America is acting to boost overall sales of dried, instant and wet ambient convenient products. These have shown increasing signs of maturity in Western markets where demand has tended to move into fresher convenient products.
Convenience continues to be a key trend in food and drinks, with consumers increasingly looking for products that suit their lifestyle requirements. The extent of the development of convenient products is signaled by the notion that consumers are coming to view various convenience benefits as the norm. Adding value in terms of convenience is increasingly linked to providing further benefits, combining saving time and effort with additional aspects of food and drink marketing. These include providing health, freshness, taste, versatility and ethical benefits, and marketing products that suit particular consumer needs such as on-the-go convenience and products for children.

Future Convenience Food and Drinks is a new report published by Business Insights that provides insight into the direction of the convenient food and drinks market and how the sector will develop over the next five years. This report analyzes current and future trends that are set to impact significantly on the marketing, formulation and packaging of convenience food and drinks.

Discover future growth opportunities in the convenience food and drinks market with this new report

• Identify future growth opportunities in a developed sector, using this reports analysis of sales of convenience food and drinks in emerging markets to 2011.
• Gain insight into industry opinions on the convenience food and drinks market over the next 5 years through an exclusive survey of industry executives undertaken by Business Insights.

Some key findings from this report:
• The convenience food and drinks market is worth $158bn in Asia-Pacific and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.9% to 2011. Latin America and the Middle East and Africa are set to grow at a faster rate, but these regions hold a collective share of less than 13% of global sales.
• A growing share of 40% of new convenient products launched globally in 2008 feature benefits relating to speed of preparation, compared to shares of 30% for single serving products and 15% for fresh convenience.
• Expenditure on convenient products peaks in Sweden at over $700 per capita, and is over $400 in the US. Per capita spend in all other regions is less than a quarter than that of the average for Western Europe and North America, but the gap is expected to narrow steadily.
• The number of dinners prepared from scratch at home is highest in France and Spain but is falling fast. The level of cooking from scratch is lowest in the US but the trend away from this appears to be slowing.

It’s that time of year again when people forgo their usual sarcasms and recognize the good things in life. I know there is a lot to be sarcastic about these days and, if you watch entertainment news or The Soup, you know what I’m talking about. But there are many things to be thankful for such as good music. So, here are ten things that I’m thankful for (all music related of course):

10. Drum Off 09: I’m thankful that there are corporations such as Guitar Center that still the value quality music, hosting events like this featuring the best drummers like Danny Carey from Tool and Brian Dailor from Mastodon.

9. Webcasts: I’m thankful for webcasts that bring festivals like Coachella and KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas to my computer every year when I can’t be there in person.

8. The Beastie Boys, Vandals, and The Aquabats: I’m thankful that there are really talented musicians who resist the urge to take themselves seriously.

7. Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes: I’m thankful this rising star thinks the Karate Kid and Stevie Nicks are important cultural icons.

6. Insanely unique musicians: I’m thankful for musicians such as Maynard James Keenan, Tori Amos, Bjork and Mike Patton, who all take music to places no one ever imagined or expected.

5. NIN farewell tour: I’m thankful that I finally got to see NIN live before Trent Reznor retired it.

4. Deftones’ resilliance: I’m thankful that Chi Cheng is still holding on and maybe someday we’ll get to see him play again.

3. The Cure still rocks: I’m thankful this band is still touring and making great music. Without The Cure, Deftones and Muse would never sound the way they do.

2. Rage Against the Machine reunion: I’m thankful that I got to see this band reunite at Coachella in 2007 with 80,000 other RATM fans.

1. Bad Religion continues to comment on American society: I’m thankful Greg Graffin is saying all the things that need to be said and is also a UCLA professor, who is actually doing his part to help mold American youth into critically thinking members of society.

And now a Band of the Week I am very thankful for…Placebo!

I’ve been listening to this band for a while now and I am surprised that they are not as big in the states as they are everywhere else. Since the first time that I heard their cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” I was hooked. I enthusiastically suggest anything from their 2006 album Meds, but you must hear “Lazarus” and “Drag.” They recently released a new album Battle for the Sun and I am loving “The Never-Ending Why.” I saw them live at Coachella and I highly recommend catching them live. However, this band will be on a World tour until March. Hopefully, these Brits will visit the states soon.

Until next time, protege moi. -K

Oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard will discuss his recent deep-sea discoveries; introduce the new, state-of-the-art ship of exploration; and reveal the details of his 2010 expedition via a live webcast. On December 3, Immersion Learning™ brings Dr. Ballard’s world of ocean exploration live to audiences via webcasts at immersionlearning.org. The live webcasts are the first to take place from Dr. Ballard’s new Inner Space Center at the University of Rhode Island Narragansett Campus, which serves as “mission control” for undersea exploration.

Dr. Ballard will share stories and underwater video from the Institute for Exploration’s recent expedition to the Aegean Sea, where they discovered five shipwreck sites from aboard the E/V Nautilus, Dr. Ballard’s new ship of exploration. The ship is linked to the Inner Space Center, allowing scientists and Immersion Learning students to “step aboard,” regardless of their location. Dr. Ballard will introduce audiences to the Nautilus and discuss his 2010 expedition, a six-month trip that includes a return to the Aegean and Black seas, as well as his first-ever exploration of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.

The 30-minute live webcasts can be watched on immersionlearning.org at 1:30, 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Viewers may submit their questions and comments before or during the webcast for the question-and-answer session.

Back in September, I was asked to watch a Webcast with Wired’s Chris Anderson and tweet my thoughts as I took it in. I had fun, so I was happy when I was asked to serve as a greek chorus for another Webcast hosted by HP. This one’s an interview with George Halvorson, CEO of health insurance megacompany Kaiser Permanente, and it’ll cover technology’s role in reforming health care in this country. (Timely, no?)

The Webcast is this Wednesday November 18th starting at 2:30pm ET; you can find it here. Stop by if you have a chance–it’ll feature tweets selected from everyone in the audience, and you’ll be able to submit questions for Halvorson via Twitter…
