This week, I will be presenting live from Australia the final session of the Fall PMI College Of Scheduling (COS) Wednesday Webinar Series: Scheduling in the Age of Complexity. This hour-long event will provide key insights for better scheduling from a personal level: What is the role of the scheduler and what is our future?

The PMI-COS Fall series is designed to bring highlights from the 6th Annual Scheduling Conference held in Boston, MA earlier this year. Archived presentations are available at http://www.pmicos.org/ondemandlearning.asp if you find them of interest, why not sign up for the College?

The Featured Presentation: Scheduling in the Age of Complexity

Scheduling was developed as a computer based modelling process at a time when ‘command and control’ was the dominant management paradigm. The mathematical precision of the early scheduling calculations were somehow translated into certain project outcomes. Today, the certainties are no longer so apparent. Most projects run late and uncertainty and complexity are starting to take center stage.

This paper identifies the key elements in Complexity Theory to suggest the real role of a schedule in ‘the age of complexity’. It concludes by recommending a way to re-establish the role of the scheduler in the successful delivery of projects in the 21st Century.

DATE: Wednesday, December 2, 2009
TIME: 5:00pm EST (US Eastern Daylight Savings Time); Doors open at 4:45pm

First of all…Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I’m excited because I recently joined an online group called The Global Education Collaborative. Dr. Ransom heard about a webinar on twitter that he thought I would be interested in viewing about e-pals. That’s how I found out about this group. Some members of the Global Education Collaborative have invited me to be their “friends” and this week one person invited me to join the ning. In class a few weeks ago when we had to join a ning, I found the National Council of Teachers of English ning, and someone just “friended” me today. I have to admit I have not done much with these two nings but now that other members have shown interested in me, I’m going to explore these groups more. It’s really amazing how online networking works and how you can meet other teachers like yourself and share career information with them.

One effective way to get your message to a new audience online is by hosting and promoting a webinar

One effective way to get your message to a new audience online is by hosting and promoting a webinar or even a series of webinars. Webinars are inexpensive and relatively simple to produce and they connect you to people who are genuinely interested in what you have to say. Services like WebEx, GoToMeeting, Adobe Connect, and Microsoft Live Meeting offer you intuitive production tools and excellent coaching and assistance from real human beings.

The strategy behind your webinar should be to offer valuable content to people in your target audience. Your goal should be to establish yourself as a thought leader in your field, a unique source of information, and as a professional and trustworthy service provider or product reseller. People won’t attend your webinar if they think it is just a big commercial, so you need to offer information, tips, techniques, news, or educational material. You want people to think, “This person or company is knowledgeable, helpful, and likable. When I am in the market for the product/service they provide, I would consider buying form them.”

When developing your content, try to think of what your customers might like to know. An accountant’s webinar might be on “10 Tax Savings Tips You Need To Know.” An animal clinic’s topic might be, “How To Check Your Dog’s Dental Health At Home.” A realtor’s topic could be, “5 Easy Ways To Increase Your Home’s Resale Value By $10,000.” As you can see from these examples, you could easily create a series of webinars and hold them three or four times a year.

Once you develop the idea for your webinar content, then you need to write it. This is easy to do in PowerPoint. I recommend that you keep the entire presentation to 30 minutes or less. People’s attention span drops off substantially after that point and your webinar is probably not their only commitment that day. You might also keep the content to within 20 minutes and consider opening the session up to 10 minutes of questions from your listening audience.

Next, you need to promote your event to your customer or prospect list, which you can do by email, direct mail, phone, or even signage in your office or store if you have walk-in traffic. I recommend that you use all of these methods to reach your audience, but you should expect that the greatest return will come from email. Recipients can simply click on the hyperlink, register in seconds, and have it scheduled on their calendar. You will receive a report from your webinar service provider showing all the people who attended, and all those who registered but did not attend. This list provides a terrific follow-up tool for you to connect with the registrants afterwards.

Should you charge for your webinar or offer it free? Well, I have paid for some webinars and would continue to do so if the content were valuable. The challenge is that selling access to information is difficult when there is so much free access to it. Today, 99% of webinars are free, so people would think twice when someone asked them to pay for one. This is because the standard webinar model is sponsorship-based, with a blend of promotional and educational content.

With that said, people do spend a lot of money to attend non-promotional training seminars, workshops, and conferences on the topics that interest them. So if you can convince your target audience that the webinar content will be truly educational, valuable, and exclusive (not free elsewhere), then people will pay for it.

The cost of hosting your webinar varies, but my company pays a few hundred dollars a month for our service. You might expect to get just a few people or a few dozen people to attend the first one. But over time, you will create a following and add more value to your existing and future customer relationships. A webinar program can be a profitable and effective part of most any small business’ marketing strategy.

Webinars are a good way to mix up the way you deliver your message to tradesmen. They allow you to

Webinars are a good way to mix up the way you deliver your message to tradesmen. They allow you to set yourself apart as an expert, gives you visibility, credibility and immediate feedback on your topic. They take a lot of work, but if done right will reap you benefits for a long time. You can also repurpose them as webcasts and put them on your web site so the contractors can view them at their leisure. Here are some tips on how to make sure your Webinar is successful:

Pick a timely subject - You want to not only be topical but timely with what you pick as a topic. Remember, one of your objectives is to be a thought leader.

Make sure you address “what’s in it for them.” How will your new tool or process help them do their job better.

Promote it both pre- and post-event - Make the most out of it by using Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and any groups you belong to, to generate interest and sign ups. Promote it to your customer and potential lists, as well as through any trade organization or association. After the event, convert it to a Webcast and put it on your web site.

Keep it to no more than an hour. My rule of thumb is keep your presentation to ideally 30 minutes, but no more than 40, and leave the rest of the time for questions. Also, when appropriate, add some humor. Tell a joke or show a cartoon to help illustrate your point.

Don’t try to put 10 lbs. into a 5 lb. bag - If you have that much info, break it up into 2 Webinars. Remember, people can only retain so much info, so make your point and then deliver on it.

Keep audience engaged by taking little surveys throughout the presentation. This not only gives them a reason to stay engaged, it gives you a moment to get ready for the next point.

Practice, Practice, Practice – This might be the most important point of all. Remember, you’re trying to come off as the “expert” and you don’t want to stumble through the presentation. Prepare and give it to some co-workers or friends and listen to their critiques. You need to be upbeat and engaging in order to keep the audience from clicking off.

Webinars are not hard to do, but they do take time. Don’t be intimidated. You can do a simple Power Point presentation. Remember, content is the important factor here, not some slick graphics or flash presentation.
