I wanted to do a piece on the webGL before I forget. Since Flash can’t seem to deliver on the promise of 3D acceleration (Adobe in general I think need to start fresh on several applications rather sooner than later) the Mozilla Foundation stepped in. They made a custom implementation called Canvas which took off and became WebGL, currently supported by both Mozilla and WebKit (Microsoft is late to the party of course). While WebGL isn’t part of any official build yet, both nightly builds of WebKit and Firefox has the functionality. In the case of WebKit you need to compile yourself (easier said than done I might add, but I didn’t bother too much). With Firefox however one only needs to know which buttons to push.

If someone would like to try it out, there are guides for that out there. What I did was I downloaded the nightly build of Firefox (called Mindfield). In the address bar one simply writes about:config and then scrolls down to the WebGL option and makes it true. Too try it out simply visit the WebGL Spore demo by a Mozilla dev.

After looking through the javascript files I came to the conclusion that you have to implement all the GLU functionality yourself since only standard OpenGL (ES i think) calls are availible. A shame but I bet someone will create a JSGLU soon enough. Also loading resources is really convinient since the broweser takes care of loading (in a separate thread I figure).

WebGL is still at its infancy and there is a lot of work to be done. Also the javascript performance is very crucial for any implementation and thankfully WebKit has really driven the development forward in that particular area. Hopefully someone will get around to making Quake 1 in native javascript with WebGL and get everyone else started. I for one would love to be able to integrate 3D graphics with web applications.

Sergey Brin, one of google founder’s, predicts that Google Chrome (newly arrived in its Google Chrome OS form) and Google’s mobile device OS Android will eventually merge.

Though Google Chrome and Android were developed separately, Brin said he expects the two will become closer and more integrated now both projects are public.

“A subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack,” said Brin, suggesting that Android will take advantage of some of Google Chrome’s programming advances.

Brin also suggested that the brand name is likely to change: “My guess is we’ll have ‘Chrome Lite’ or something similar.” Looks like Brin’s planning to take a leaf out of Adobe’s playbook with Flash Lite.

Chrome and Android both use WebKit, an open-source project, at the heart of their browser, so it’s understandable that Google is looking to combine the two.

If you don’t already have Ubuntu Tweak I recommend it. From there you can enable the development repos for Firefox development versions. Under Applications>Third-Party Sources. Otherwise you can do it strait from launchpad.

If you run the update manager Firefox 3.5.6pre will be installed, and Under Synaptic Firefox 3.6b3 and 3.7a1 will be available to install. I only tried installing 3.6. It wont overwrite your current install of FF, and I noticed I could even run two versions at the same time. In the applications menu “Firefox” will be replaced with Shiretoko (the code name for the 3.5 release) and Namoroka (the code name for 3.6) will now show up.

There are other more complete browser benchmarks out there, but I just wanted a quick rundown of how much of a performance improvement is coming with 3.6.

For whatever reason FF does poorly on the sunspider test on my 64 bit machine. I switched this machine to 64 bit when I did a fresh install of Karmic. I have run previous tests on in it as 32bit and FF did better then. see old post. Surprisingly Epiphany won the race overall.

That inspired me to play with Epiphany just a bit and found out it can be customized to be a pretty slick browser! I found it has an inspector for web developers, automatically opens source (ctrl+U) in gedit, and in many way behaves very much like chrome. It opens fast, plays flash well, and the chrome can be stripped down so it wastes less screen space. For example if you turn off the status bar link URL’s show up in the bottom left corner just like in Chrome, a nice little touch. The unified address/search bar also serves as a progress bar like Safari used to/does(?). here’s a screenshot:

Zwei der Lücken stuft Apple als kritisch ein, da sich dadurch Schadcode in einen Rechner schleusen und starten lässt. Allerdings sind laut Bericht davon nur die Windows-Versionen betroffen. Weitere Schwachstellen in libxml und Webkit können sowohl unter Windows als auch unter Mac OS X dazu führen, dass Anwendungen abstürzen oder den Inhalt lokaler HTML-Dateien preisgeben und dass Angreifer Cross-Site-Request-Forgery-Attacken durchführen können. Zudem führt die Verarbeitung von HTML-5-Media-Elementen etwa in Mails dazu, dass die Anwendung automatisch Audio- oder Videoinhalte nachlädt, ohne beim Anwender nachzufragen. Angreifer können dies beispielsweise ausnutzen, um festzustellen, ob der Empfänger eine Mail geöffnet hat – also ein klassischer “Web Bug“. Dieses Problem tritt jedoch nicht in der Windows-Version auf.

If you read my review of Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” you probably noticed that GNOME’s Epiphany web browser has ditched it’s Gecko rendering engine for the WebKit engine. Part of the problems that one action has brought is that not only do web pages render differently under WebKit than they do under Mozilla’s Gecko engine, but every single extension for Epiphany have to be recoded to work with the new backend. As a result some of the wonderful extensions we used with Epiphany/Gecko flat don’t work anymore and I have yet to find updated code for them.

Today I was going through my news feeds and realized that while I do have the Epiphany blog on my feed list via Planet GNOME I want to subscribe to the blog itself so it’s easier to find updates to my default web browser. As I looked at the last ten posts on Epiphany’s blog I discovered the announcement that they were making the switch. They actually have a very good reason for ending Gecko support.

The Epiphany dependency on Gecko creates a number of problems for us. The Gecko release cycle is very long (e.g. Gecko 1.8 was released with Firefox 1.5 in 2005; 1.8.1 with Firefox 2.0 in 2006 and 1.9 will be released sometime this year with Firefox 3.0), prone to delays and not synchronised with the unvarying 6-month Gnome release cycle. Furthermore, it and the feature work on Gecko are mostly driven by the Firefox browser, our main competitor on the Gnome desktop. Also the embedding API of Gecko (GtkMozEmbed) has been unmaintained and stagnant for a long time. Finally, the current plans for “Mozilla 2.0″ bring much uncertainty to us, as well as much work to account for their proposed big API changes.

We are a small team, with only one maintainer and a hand-full of regular contributors. Maintaining the abstraction layer, and the Gecko back-end require lot of effort and time. Much time alone is spent on keeping up with Gecko API changes, and we have not had much contributions to the Gecko back-end in a long time.

Even I have to admit that their logic makes sense. The announcement also reveals the advantages to using WebKit including a redesigned set of API’s and the fact that WebKit directly uses GNOME technology so it makes sense that the default GNOME web browser would use GNOME tech.

Epiphany/Gecko reached it’s end of life back in July so the release of Ubuntu 9.10 naturally includes Epiphany/WebKit. While there is a package for Epiphany/Gecko available for Ubuntu 9.10 it’s a dummy package information states that it’s been made obsolete and is safe to remove. It certainly can’t be installed on my system. Epiphany-extensions is installed with Epiphany/Gecko and works without a hitch, but some of my favorite extensions are third-party extensions that are included in epiphany-extensions-more, which won’t install. When I try to install it I get a very odd error:

Frick-frick-frickety-frick! This is a known issue and I hope someone is on the case although I can’t find an upstream bug to show it. Working from the Ubuntu package details I can say that while Tab Foreground seems to work, most of the extensions in the package that I want to use simply don’t work on my system. Here’s a list of extensions in the package with their status as far as I can tell.

Extensions bringing new features:
* Automatic Find As You Type – Start typing, and you will find text. Doesn’t seem to work.
* Automatic Find Links As You Type – The same, restricted to links. Doesn’t seem to work.
* Bookmark shortcuts – Use deskbar applet shortcuts in the URL bar. Works, thank the deity.
* Session Manager – Save session to a file and restore it later. Don’t use.
* Tab Links – Copy the opened URI’s to the clipboard. Don’t use.
* Universal Edit Button - A single shortcut to bring the editor for sites with editable content (wikis). Don’t use.
* Video Downloader - Automatically download or open Flash videos from popular sites, without Flash support. Doesn’t work, much to my chagrin, so I have to use my Firefox video downloading tool, which works on more sites anyway.
* View Source – View page source inside the browser. Doesn’t work, source still opens in Gedit.

Modifications of the user interface:
* Confirm Window Close - Confirm closing when several tabs are open. Don’t use.
* Hidden Menu - Hide and show the menu with a toolbar button. Don’t use since I use the GlobalMenu.
* Menubar and Toolbar beside each other. Don’t use.
* Quit menu item. Doesn’t use.
* Single Menu - All the menus merged in a single one. Don’t use.
* Tabs on treeview - Replace tabs by a treeview in a sidebar. Don’t use.
* Throbber remover - Removes the throbber from the toolbar. Don’t use.
* Urgent Content Notify - Warn the Window Manager when a page changes in the background. Works.

Modifications of the tabs behaviour:
* Close Other Tabs - Close all tabs but the current one. Don’t use.
* Colour tabs - Colorize tabs depending on the website. Don’t use.
* Close tabs with middle-click. Doesn’t work.
* Only One Close Button - Replace close buttons on the tabs by a single one in the toolbar. Don’t use.
* Restore Closed Tab. Doesn’t seem to work.
* Tab Foreground - Open new tabs in the foreground. Works, as long as you open a new tab with Ctrl-T or the New Tab button on the toolbar.
* Tab Key Tab Navigate - Use control-tab to navigate between tabs. Don’t use.
* Less Tab Label Border - Reduce the border around tab labels. Don’t use.
* Wide tabs - Expand tabs to use all available space. Don’t use, and I wish I could make tabs smaller like Firefox does to let me view more than 5 open tabs at once.

I did try downloading the source code for epiphany-extensions-more and dropping them into my profile folder (~/.gnome2/epiphany/extensions) to use them that way, but the results are the same. Hopefully we can get these extensions working, as well as getting the spell checker working better and more intuitively, because it’s making me want to either compile Epiphany/Gecko from source (which will mean I lose the WebKit improvements) or make another browser my default. I do use Chromium as my #2 browser, and it’s working pretty well for me, but I’d really prefer to see Epiphany fixed rather than switch. After all, switching won’t do a damned thing toward making Epiphany/WebKit a better browser for other users.

An article about new features of WebKit’s Web Inspector is available. There is to note that most features aren’t really usefull when developping in Cappuccino, and setting a breakpoint using the Web Inspector doesn’t seem possible in ObjJ source code (as it is converted at runtime in js), I’ve then always used the debugger; instruction instead. Moreover I didn’t find the stop on exception option in Safari 4’s debugger (is said to be present in WebKit – and is also available in Firebug).

Lately, I’ve really wanted to check out the Zune HD. It is a beautifully designed portable media player with a webkit-based Internet browser. It’s OLED display is said to be gorgeous, and this sucker packs an Nvidia Tegra chip which means silky smooth HD video playback without any lag. The size looks almost perfect, being just slightly slimmer than the iPod touch.

The user interface is very artsy and greatly improved compared to previous Zunes. Critics have praised the Zune HD as an evolution of the device which is finally coming into into its own. Finally a device that is on par with Apple’s iPod touch, and could give it a run for its money if it gains enough traction. The Zune HD needs apps and it needs them fast if it wants to rumble with the iPod touch.

I’ve hit several Best Buys and have not been able to even see the device in person. Haven’t had time to check out J and R or some other places. The more great things I hear about it, the more I want to hold it in my hands.

Here is another reason to pick the Zune HD up. It is one hell of a scratch proof gadget. Check out how it fairs under a pen, knife, key, and other sharp objects.

Não era difícil ver a compra da Torch Mobile (uma empresa de software conhecida exclusivamente por um navegador WebKit para mobile) pela RIM como um sinal de que esta considerava investir em um novo browser. Mas agora já temos certeza.

Células fotovoltaicas impressas em folhas não são nenhuma novidade, assim como LEDs e baterias ultrafinas de lítio. A novidade é juntar essas três tecnologias para trazer luz barata a regiões empobrecidas e sem acesso à eletricidade.

Frederik Krebs inventou esta combinação de painéis solares e luzes LED que, apesar de ainda ser um trabalho em progresso, já tem potencial para trazer iluminação às áreas mais pobres do globo. Eu chamo as luminárias de trabalho em progresso porque atualmente elas ainda trabalham a apenas 1% de eficiência. Mas com o custo final esperado de 7 dólares por cada uma, elas têm realmente a chance de mudas vidas, mesmo com a baixa eficiência.

Alguns prtótipos das luminárias já estão sendo testados na Zâmbia. Como visto na imagem, os painéis solares são deixados ao sol durante o dia e então enrolados na forma aproximada de um cone (e presos nesta posição por um botão) à noite. Eu realmente quero ver isso funcionando bem, já que ninguém nesse mundo deveria ser obrigado a viver sem iluminação artificial durante a noite. [IEEE Spectrum via Pop Sci]

Tem uma lenda que diz que no final de todo arco-íris tem um pote de ouro, será? Bom, nesse flagra abaixo não é possível ver o pote de ouro, mas se o prêmio for este carro eu ficaria muito feliz

Just a micro blog today to say some facts. In case you live under the rocks, rekonq is a software that has just reached the “perfect social browser” status. In fact all rekonq users tend to try contacting me asking for bugs to fix or features to implement…

Ok, stop joking and let’s see facts:

• rekonq 0.3.0 has been released today. I’m aware that a lot of distro are just releasing some packages about. If yours is not on the list or you prefer compiling code, you can find it through kde-apps or sf.
• With this release I can proudly say I reached my first goal: I feel I’m having “something” in my hands and a lot of people to share with. And I’m really happy about.
• We have a lot of things in our TODO list here and I really can’t wait starting implementing them. So, I really need this release to restart my happy developing nights
