Have you ever heard of the book GUI Bloopers?  WordPress is a treasure house of GUI Bloopers, problems that can arise in the creation of “graphical” user interfaces. Graphical just means pictures, like the one on a TV screen. The opposite is “text”, like the way computers used to be when they displayed green words on a black background; remember that? Google Code has just launched a new Firefox add-on called ‘Page Speed‘. This is an open-source project that Google has just taken a step ahead.

The purpose of Google Code is simple. It will analyze the performance/load time of your website and make recommendations based on it’s analysis.

The underlying principle of this add-on is that speed matters. If you notice, in the Web 2.0 era, more and more people are running short of one thing – time. Quick pageload times/websites now guarantee more site visitations, better user stickiness, and as a result, higher revenues.

The way in which this works is simple to implement as well. All one needs to do is ensure that they are using Firefox (Windows and OS users alike) and also have Firebug installed at the same time. Here’s what you do to start using Page Speed:

1. Install Page Speed.
2. Run Page Speed against your web pages.
3. Read about the Page Speed performance best practices.

This is a tool build specifically for Webmasters who work on improving the site’s performance. Very often, the questions they ask are two-fold: a) Is my website fast (according to certain set standards), and b) How do I render my website faster?

The same questions are answered in great style by Page Speed. Once the page that you want to analyze completes loading (you should ensure that you see the ‘Done’ message at the bottom of the FF browser), go to ‘Tools’, click on ‘Firebug’, and then ‘Open Firebug’. Now, there are bound to be a lot of comments from various developers regarding the purpose of the tool and the results that it spews out, since there is no universal language that websites/developers speak. Nevertheless, I would encourage everyone to try it out. It just feels uber cool even though you may not be a techie

Overall, the purpose of this tool is justified and was much needed in the industry. I am sure that there would have been similar tools that would already be existing in the industry, but the fact that this one’s from Google lends to it the credibility that this tool’s functionality deserved.

Para realiza la captura deberemos entrar a la web poner la URL de la web de la que queremos sacar la imagen y darle en el botoncito “go!”. El sitio nos proporcionará un trozo de código php que podremos pegar en cualquier logar para poner la imágen. Pero esto aún no es todo, podremos escoger entre las siguientes resoluciones aunque la que es diferente  y nos interesa es la última.

Secure websites affected by SSL flaw. Bug can be used to hack into servers. Web users are being warned aboout a serious flaw in the technology used to transfer information securely on the internet.

The flaw lies in the SSL protocol, best known as the technology used for secure browsing on websites beginning with HTTPS, and lets attackers intercept secure SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) communications between computers using what’s known as a man-in-the-middle attack.

Although the flaw can only be exploited under certain circumstances, it could be used to hack into servers in shared hosting environments, mail servers, databases, and many other secure applications, according to Chris Paget, a security researcher who has studied the issue.

“It’s a protocol-level flaw.” said Paget, the chief technology officer with a security consultancy called H4rdw4re.

“There’s a whole lot of stuff that’s going to have to get fixed on this one: web browsers, web servers, web load balancers, web accelerators, mail servers, SQL Servers, ODBC drivers, peer-to-peer protocols.”

Although an attacker would first need to hack into the victim’s network to launch the man-in-the-middle attack, the results would then be devastating – especially if used in a targeted attack to gain access to a database or a mail server, Paget said.

Because it is so widely used, SSL is constantly under the microscope of security researchers.

Late last year, researchers found a way to create fake SSL certificates that would be trusted by any browser, and in August researchers unveiled a handful of new attacks that could compromise SSL traffic.

But unlike those attacks, which had to do with the infrastructure used to manage SSL’s digital certificates, this latest bug lies in the SSL protocol itself and will be much harder to fix.

Further complicating matters is the fact that the bug was inadvertently disclosed on an obscure mailing list, forcing vendors into a mad scramble to patch their products.

The issue was discovered in Auguust by researchers at PhoneFactor, a mobile-phone security company. They had been working for the past two months with a consortium of technology vendors called the ICASI (Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet) to co-ordinate an industry wide fix for the problem, dubbed ‘Project Mogul’.

But their careful plans were thrown into disarray when SAP engineer Martin Rex stumbled across the bug on his own.

Apparently unaware of the seriousness of the issue, he posted his observations on the issue to an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) discussion list. It was then publicised by security researcher HD Moore.

Enough people were talking about the issue that PhoneFactor decided to go public with their findings.

“At that point we felt like the bad guys knew and we felt we had a responsibility for the good guys to know too,” said Sarah Fender, PhoneFactor’s vice president of marketing.

Fender couldn’t say who was ready to patch the issue, but she noted that a number of open source products are “anxious” to push out a patch. “I think we’ll see some patching in the near future,” she said.

The ICASI could not be reached for comment.

Although security experts say the flaw has probably existed for years, it is not thought to have been exploited in any attacks.

“While we consider it to be a material vulnerability, it’s not the end of the world,” Fender said.
