Fat cat or sleek feline?

Yuletide approaches and, unless you’re a non-conformist, that means two things: an empty bank account from buying stupid presents nobody really wants and a full stomach from all the rich food. But what about your blog and web site? Are they looking a little overweight, too?

Finding a balance is a tough job - especially between content and income for people who use their online presence to generate revenue. Go too far in one direction and it looks like a zen buddhist designed the site; too far in the other direction and the pages look more like the jumble of stuff in one of those “everything under £1″ shops.

Each element of your site is an ingredient that makes up the visitor’s meal. Some are healthy and light, like virtual fruit and veg: a thumbnail graphic, a top posts list, a navigator pane, a text ad or three. They contain calories, of course, but your visitors get a valuable return.

Then there’s the fat. Heavy, bandwidth-consuming ingredients like Flash ads, video, 2Mb backdrops in BMP format, music and all those “amusing” widgets. They’re loaded with cholesterol and heavy with sugar. Each one is 90% of an average web-surfer’s recommended daily intake. Visitors may read a site like that, but then they’ll feel burdened and sick from all the long sugars. They’ll just want to sit and watch The Wizard Of Oz for the fifty-seventh time.

So why not put your site on a diet this year? Take a good look at everything on the page and consider just how long it’s going to take to load – especially for someone without an 8Mbit connection.

Do you really need the news ticker? The custom widgets? The big graphics? All those Flash ad blocks? The “cool” background music?

If it isn’t adding value for your visitors, throw it out.

A successful website has to do two things. Firstly, it has to attract a regular flow of visitors th

A successful website has to do two things. Firstly, it has to attract a regular flow of visitors that are interested in what your services or products are. Second, it has to be designed to get visitors to take an action. This could either be to convert them into buyers or at least get them started into your conversion process.

The “call to action” could either be to build an email list, quotation requests, signing up for a webinar or placing an order (if e-commerce).

Getting the visitor to take action requires a kind of magic to design which is simple but also very subtle.

Below are some guidelines to help you with your website to convert visitors into customers.

Memorable

Create a design for your website that will be memorable and that stands out from the crowd. You don’t have to design the next greatest “artwork”. It only means that you must have a style that your visitors will like and remember. The design should be appropriate to your industry. Also remember that a ‘graphic designer’ may not necessarily be skilled in ‘web design’

Information

People are searching the internet for answers to their questions. They are looking for information to a problem they might have. Make it quick and easy for them to find the information that they are seeking. Have a clear writing style, navigation and formatting. The industry guideline is it should take no more than ‘three clicks’ for them to find what they are looking for.

Sales funnel

Guide your visitors on the steps they should do next. Grab their attention, build their trust and then get them to take an action (call to action). You’re best selling sequence should be built into your website. Think of potential objections and try to address these during ‘their journey’

Prevent surprises

Always give the right information to your visitors before you take them through the call to action. A common mistake in e-commerce websites is that they are not revealing the shipping costs until the payment step. And with e-commerce sites, allow the customer to complete the order process first before ‘signing up’ for payment.

Communicate

If there is anything on your website that can take time to complete, let your visitors know how far they have gone. This could be done by breaking the steps up and showing a progress bar. This can include an e-commerce checkout, survey or even a download file.

Trust

People are cautious to buy online. Always make it easy for them to contact you by providing your address and phone number on your website. Post your shipping procedure, privacy and refund policy so that your visitors can read them. Logos indicating ‘security’ help re-assure visitors.

Improve

Make sure that you have good analytics installed on your site. Then be prepared to make changes to your website based on actual experience. Measure the bounce rate of your website. The bounce rate is the number of visitors that visits a particular page and then leaves without going on to the other pages. These are then divided by the total of visitors to the page.

Other key measurements include visitor counts, traffic sources and conversion rates.

Leave a comment below if you require more information to design a website to convert your visitors into customers.

You can use it to entice people to visit your website and find out about your company. This really benefits your company or organization.

Ok so I was talking to a co-worker of mine the other day and I realized that they knew quite a bit about seo, ppc, and online Display ads. As do I. However they kept mentioning something that just bothered me. My Co-worker kept saying that display ads are designed to drive a mass amount of traffic to their website. This could not be further from the truth. Click rates nation wide have been on the decline. To top that off, all a click really means is that the user has an immediate can’t wait need.

Now, I know a lot about online marketing and I try very hard to keep up and make sure I am at the top of my game. However, I have always tried to conduct business, not on the basis of what I do know, but on the basis of what I do NOT know. Because of this I have been very successful. This actually a good bit of advice for anyone in any situation.

Have you ever went to a website that looked really good, had information that interested you and then your stuck? You can’t find how to get further into the site to find more information. Or if you do find the right button, it doesn’t work. That can be the quickest turnoff for a site visitor. It can be simple things that make the visitor questions the company behind the website, such as links that go nowhere, or a picture that has a little red X instead of the picture. Websites must be easy for the visit to use, to find information, or order products, to share with friends via social media or e-mail and to bookmark. These simple additions are so often overlooked, yet are so valuable to a successful website.

If a small company creates their own website, it’s important to keep in mind these simple additions. If you want to save money, as is a necessity for so many small businesses, there’s nothing wrong with trying to do the website yourself. However, it doesn’t cost much to ask for some help. Perhaps you know someone (a web designer would be great) who is tech-savvy for some tips and advice. You would be amazed at how many high school- and college-aged kids know a lot about making websites. A small company can also check with their local Small Business Administration for some free assistance. Speaking of high school and college kids, check with your local school to see if a class would be interested and willing to help your company develop a website as a class project. They can show you how to make updates as they create the site so you can keep it going after the class ends. Ask friends to visit the site and try all the links to verify that they work. Ask for their opinion and suggestions for improvement. Don’t take their recommendations personally, but consider it constructive criticism. And don’t think you must have a website that is equivalent to Amazon.com or Ebay.com. Those websites cost tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. An inexpensive small business website can be just as effective as long as it’s attractive; has good, useful content; and, works right.

Fancy graphics can be attractive. They have an impact, but the benefits of using text far outweigh t

Fancy graphics can be attractive. They have an impact, but the benefits of using text far outweigh the advantages of using images. Web searches are based upon content, content, and even more content!

The speed of a Website is important to visitors. There is less than 20 seconds to capture their attention and convince them to look further. If the Web page takes a long time to load, a potential customer visitor will be lost. Slow Web Pages can also cause a Website to be downgraded by the Search Engines.

So use Images sparingly – they should only be used if they relate and support the Web Page content.

There are several factors to consider when optimizing Images on your site:

File Names

Giving pictures an appropriate file name will help Search Engines determine content, especially for Image specific searches like Google’s Image Search. For example, the Image above is called “Image-Handling.jpg”, rather than naming it “XP1234.jpg”. Use hyphens, rather than underscores.

Also for convenience, store the Images in a separate folder in Windows Explorer. The Images can then be sorted by size to see which will take longest to download.

Image Size and Quality

When both Image size and quality are important, this may cause a problem. Lower quality Images decrease load time, but detract from the visual effect required. High quality Images look great, but cause pages to load slowly.

For large Images, it is best to place a small thumbnail Image next to the description, and then link it to a high quality Image. As an example, see how Google handles the searching of Images. Twenty thumbnail Images are shown on a page. Using ADSL the download time is an acceptable 12 seconds.

Compression

It is essential that Images be optimally compressed. Properly optimised Images will decrease page load times and bring new visitors from Image searches. Ideally, the total size of all Images on a page should not exceed 10 KBytes.

The Width and Height of an Image can be altered in the <img> tag. This is handy when displaying the Image, but the full size will still be downloaded. It is more efficient to resize a large image with graphics software before downloading. Even though the resized Image will have the correct dimensions, the Width and Height should still be set in the <img> tag.

Experiment with all the different Image Formats, using the highest compression that gives acceptable quality. Start with the .png File Type – it has lossless compression. Increase the compression ratio of the .jpg or .gif File Type whilst maintaining reasonable quality. Avoid using the .bmp format.

This is an analysis of the different File Types, using the Image on this page:

The File Type chosen was .jpg, with a 99% reduction from the original size! Note that the optimal File Type will vary depending upon the composition of the Image.

Alt Text

All Images should include an ALT text (shown when the user places the mouse over an Image) that describes the Image. The Alt text helps Search Engines understand the Image content and context. This in turn allows more targeted traffic via Text searches and Image searches. If an Image is used as a Link, the ALT text must be used.

Put relevant Keywords into the ALT text of Images. The contents of the ALT text can have a bearing on the Ranking, and the ALT text may appear in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) listings. Use the ALT text to make the Image user-friendly – and describe what the Image is depicting.

The Company logo needs careful treatment when it appears at the top of the Web page. A phrase in the logo ALT text may be found when doing a search, and the full ALT text shown in the SERP listing. The ALT text of the logo, of up to 160 characters, should be inviting enough to entice a visit.

Surrounding Text

It is important that the surrounding text and Image captions are consistent with the content of the picture.

Avoid Putting Text in Images

Using Text rather than Images has multiple advantages:

 Text is easier to read
 Text downloads faster
 Text is easier to update
Text can be found by Search Engines
The text in an image can easily become distorted

Strategy 1: Verbage Liposuction

Liposuction is a medical procedure where a tiny cut is made into a person’s body. Then a tube inserted into the cut. Then a vacuum attached to the other end of the tube and excess fast is removed from the patient’s body.

In a similar way, liposuction can be done on descriptive text in software. Sure, buttons and data entry areas need to be labelled. That
is now what I am talking about. What I speak about here is taking a section of text and rewriting it to remove unneccessary words.
The most common examples of this are text giving instructions or help topics. People tend to scan, not read, while using software.

One of the easiest ways I have found to effectively rewrite text for software (and technical documents) is to

- Create bullet points
- Have entries in bullet points begin with verbs
- Is the order of the list or instructions important? Then use numbered lists
- Consider using diagrams or simple animations to illustrate your point

One of the wonders of bullet points is that each point does not have to be a proper sentence.

Strategy 2: Avoid Acronym and Abbreviation Burnout

I have limited myself to using only one acronym in this blog entry – KISS.
More than 3 to 5 makes the user slow down and think and possibly write what those acronyms mean. It is unfortunately necessary to use acronyms in technical, medical, and scientific documentation due to the nature of the subject matter. However, writing applications for the general public to use, too many acronyms or abbreviations simply makes them recall what
those acronyms or abbreviations represent.

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve added Google Analytic to the websites I maintain for my clients. One of the sites I maintain is a Cut-Your-Own Christmas Tree farm…I’ve been able to tell the clients very precise data that will help them target their marketing better, such as:

1. Preparing for the weekend crowds by knowing how many people are searching the site on Thursday and Friday.

2. Tweaking the keywords as I see what people are using to search for their site.

3. Even knowing what page the user of the site chooses to exit off the website – most often on this one – from the directions page. Hopefully meaning they’re getting in the car and driving to the farm.

4. I’m able to have a clear picture of where the traffic is coming from – what area by town, so direct mail marketing can be targeted in the future.

All this information is updated daily, so I can continually gather new data for my clients and keep them informed of any trends – extremely valuable for this particular customer.

The client and I discussed this over the phone yesterday and he said his “on-the-ground” information gathering backed up the information I was giving him too. He was finding a great deal of new clients, from the same towns I had said they were coming from, and most had heard of them from the web.

One of the goals this past year has been SEO on this site. It was exciting to hear the client happy to have new clients, to know they’ve found the farm from the web and that all our work has been worth it. Now we’ll see how the next three weeks turn out, see the final data and tweak it even more for next year!
