You may have been wondering where I’ve been all this time. I sure have. Well, the main reason is because I’m lazy, as you already know, but the secondary reason is that I’ve been working on a website, which is currently live and in an unfinished state, because I have had lacking contact with the person that helps me with HTML.

I am trying to learn myself, but my limited skill (this is why I have a WordPress account.. well, several) hinders me in my endevours. I may completely redesign the site so I don’t have to use CSS so much and I might be able to understand and keep it updated.

Anyway.. if you would like to check out what I have up there so far (which is very subject to change), then please head on down to X Before A, and your every wish will be satisfied.

Well the website will probably be up Thanksgiving day. Actually Thanksgiving night. It should be up by 9PM. Since the layout probably won’t work, I’ll either change layout or websites. I’ll let you know when and if that happens

Way to Grow Number 9 should be a little bit of a no brainer:  Link CFK to your website! Put a link in a highly visible location with a blurb along the lines of  ”our school recycles cell phones, printer cartridges, laptops and other items to raise funds for our school!”

Personalize it! tell viewers how you plan to use the money that you raise, tell them about your program’s success, tell them what makes your recycling program YOURS.

Also, as long as we are online, email your parents this same info! An email list is a GREAT resource for your recycling program. Send updates, notices, successes, changes anything you want to communicate to parents. Encourage them to reach out into their workplaces and communities, encourage them to recycle!

The proof is in the pudding. Your fundraising coordinator will thank you. If that person is you, go ahead and give yourself a big ‘ol pat on the back. You deserve it.

1000 Awesome Things is one of the best feel good websites I’ve come across. Very refreshing after all those cynical websites portraying people and society at their ugliest (no matter how funny those can be).

This one in particular is for the Ferret, to remind him that even though some things (in this case work) may really get you down at times, life still has plenty of awesome things to offer.

When you think about growing a business, you think about how to attract customers. You might build a web site, create marketing materials, and look for ways to get your message to the masses, but have you ever considered ways to repel clients?

Separating the wheat from the chaff is a big part of creating a successful business. As one Inc. magazine article noted, “A person ought to be able to…in five or six seconds have an idea of what you’re selling and whether it applies to them.” Weeding out those who are not well-suited for you and your business is just as important as attracting those who are.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself, to see if you’re weeding out those who are less than ideal for you.

• Is your web site a true (and bold) representation of you?
• Do you clearly identify your ideal client within your web site?
• Do you offer alternatives for those who might be less than ideal for you (e-books, products, referrals, etc.)?
• Do you clearly outline your services, as well as those you do not provide?
• Do you have a detailed frequently asked question section on your website to help prospective clients decide if you’re the best person to serve them?
• Do you have a clearly defined niche market, and do you spend the majority of your time networking in relevant groups?
• Do you have a succinct elevator pitch for when people ask you what you do?

Helping people quickly rule themselves in or out as potential clients for you and being willing to turn away work that’s not a good fit will actually improve your business over the long haul. You’ll be happier and more enthusiastic about the work you do, you’ll have more satisfied clients because of the improved quality in your work, and you’ll be more likely to acquire similar clients going forward.

It’s finally here! After weeks and months of going through different designs, the new taylorperkey.com has finally arrived. While many parts of the website are still the same, there are whole new sections which will feature personal content as well as future projects and campaigns I may participate in. I thought I’d take a second to shamelessly plug our organization on the ol’ blog today. Many of you know what we do, so I won’t go into too much detail. Instead, I want to direct you to our website. There you will find TONS of great info. From what Intentional Gatherings is all about, to wonderful resources on how to make disciples & start your own faith community the site has become a blessing to many. We even have the ability to process tax-deductible donations online now! So, if you believe in what we do as an organization, and would like to make a tax-deductible donation head over and show us some love. =)

As you navigate around the site I encourage you to check out the various videos from our Student CPx’s, video teachings, outreach projects, Baptisms, and so much more. There is also a file sharing box where you can download various articles, workbooks, and other resources for simple church planting.

It’s been a wonderful journey over the past three years watching this organization grow and morph into what it is today. We can only hope and pray that it continues to change as we learn, and are sharpened by the Holy Spirit. I want to thank you all for  your love and support as we have ventured out into a story that only God Himself could have written…

This is a banner ad for the website Scarleteen that I saw online.  It cycled through a bunch of photographs of teenagers above the text, but all of the text is represented here.

Even though there isn’t a ton of information here, I really like this ad.  It shows a wide variety of teenagers, both male and female, and in general they look pretty normal.  The implication that they will try to answer real questions with real answers implies an attempt to really address the issues teenagers are facing, not just the issues adults want them to be facing.  I have no idea if this is true, but the ad certainly does a great job of making the website sound informative and inviting.  No mean feat when that is rarely the case with sex education in any format these days!

I thought as though I am getting around 150 views on my blog everyday, I would create this article – based upon what I do.

Be catchy:

Yes, attract the people you want to read your blog, the most common way that people find blog posts is through a search, whether that be a web search or blog search. So the first contact people will have with your blog is the title and a small sentance from the blog post. In order to attract attention, make your title small, but very informative. Say you are writing an article about baking a cake.

You Shouldn’t Use The Title:

How to make  a cake using the method featured on this article.

You Should Use:

Follow my steps for a gorgeous cake!

You see, although it may be long, it is still shorter and more appealing than the first.

Keep Relative:

If your blog is about tutorials (like mine) keep it about tutorials, don’t al of a sudden start posting about who you think might win the X Factor, or anything like that. If your blog is about tutorials, let it stay like that basically!

Layout:

Ahh, yes! A good layout, helps improve how the information on the page is sorted, the clearer (and more informative) the page, the more likely the reader will return and subscribe!

Be Heard!

Yes, if you can try and connect your blog with Twitter (if you are using WordPress, see this article!) this way titles of blog posts will also be posted to Twitter, this will lead to more visitors on your blog.

Social:

Gain more popularity, by posting replies on Facebook, MySpace etc. By saying, checkout this great blog post: (YOUR LINK HERE). This will lead your friends to your blog, however they may (or may not) know if it is your blog!

Thanks for bearing with me on the whole website issue. It’s taken me a while to deal with and to top it off I was really ill with flu for nearly a week – it’s my first day out of bed today! But well on the road to recovery (although still not recommending visitors right now…. ;-D )

Well, at the beginning of last week I finally managed to finish the new website! As well as being able to get to the new eBay Store where you’ll find the usual (and unusual) array of Fair Trade and ethical clothing, gifts, body jewellery… etc., I’ve even managed to fit a neat little members area, forum, games section, blog, links…………. so it’s pretty packed with some nifty features!

Now all it needs it some visitors and some members; of course I am relying on all of you for this so it would be absolutely fab if you could jib on over there in a moment of boredom and take a peeky! I know some of you already have….

I will be listing lots more in the eBay Store this week, too, so if you were getting worried that it was looking a bit low, (as indeed I was…) then rest assured it will be brimming with delightful goodies in time for the festive season that is bearing down upon us

A SCOTTISH teacher has said that school kids should be encouraged to use Wikipedia for school research, despite doubts over the accuracy of the information on the site.

Ollie Bray, deputy head teacher at Musselburgh Grammar, said that pupils should use it to learn how to evaluate the credibility of information.

But the online encyclopaedia has a reputation for being unreliable as anyone can edit the information it carries, and parent groups say it makes their kids “lazy”.

There have been a number of high profile mistakes on the site – just last week Thierry Henry’s entry had to be locked as angry users vandalised his profile after his handball during the France Ireland football game.

Discussion

But Ollie insists Wikipedia is a valuable teaching tool – and reckons it is better to teach pupils how to use it properly rather than ban it.

He said: “We, as teachers, should be looking at these disclaimers and working with young people to discuss why articles are disputed or contradict themselves.

“If we start with the belief that everything is subject to opinion, then we can work on how to validate it.”

He suggests teachers and pupils study the “discussion”, “source” and “history” tabs on the website.

The discussion tab will show the youngsters how much debate goes into reaching a compromise when changing disputed facts.

Better access

And he thinks that these skills should be taught alongside internet safety and responsible use, as biased information could also be seen as “inappropriate content”.

He said: “There is extreme content on the internet, but kids only find it because they go looking for it.”

And the teacher – who is currently working for Learning and Teaching Scotland as a national adviser for emerging technologies – also wants kids to have better access to sites such as YouTube, which is banned in some schools and allowed in others.

He said: “Why is it fair that children in East Lothian can get access to hundreds of hours on Channel 4, National Geographic or the Scottish Parliament, when other schools and teachers have not got access to these resources?

“It means that children don’t get to benefit from it, or the teacher or head has to spend time procuring resources which are available for free.”

IT savvy

But the internet site has been blamed for making Scottish schoolchildren lazy, with parents worried that their kids are relying on someone else to do all the hard work for them.

Eleanor Coner from the Scottish Parent Teacher Council said: “Children are very IT-savvy, but they are rubbish at researching.

“The sad fact is most children these days use libraries for computers, not the books. We accept that as a sign of the times, but schools must teach pupils not to believe everything they read.

“It’s dangerous when the internet is littered with opinion and inaccurate information which could be taken as fact.”

Although Wikipedia is edited by its users, the site monitors the changes and responds to inaccuracies when it can.

A disclaimer on the site says: “While Wikipedia articles generally attain a good standard after editing, it is important to note that fledgling, or less well monitored, articles may be susceptible to vandalism and insertion of false information.”

Hilarious, yes! I love Mom jokes AND I love accusing everyone around me of being gay.  Especially Moms! Absolutely right up my ally when it comes to one-panelled humor strips.  Love it.  Of course, I was devastated to learn approximately two and a half minutes later that it was NOT on sale as a tee-shirt as I had previously believed.  But still, I loved it enough to go to the source–Natalie Dee’s website.  click here!

I’m tempted to use adjectives like ‘obsessed’ when I describe my feelings about Ms. Dee.   But apparently, Natalie Dee isn’t her real name and the reason that she doesn’t use her real name is because she doesn’t want to encourage stalkers/overly excitable types.   I can appreciate that.  So, I’ll try not to let loose too much here.  I’ll pull back a bit on the normal cyber-stalking that I engage in when prepping for  blogs.  Let’s just appreciate the output, shall we?   Here’s three samples from her archives.  All good.

Writing a one-panel strip is hard work, but Natalie Dee is a fricking champion.  Between the ‘i can relate to that’ feeling and the odd miscellany that she captures so perfectly in her simplistic drawings, I’ve been consistently entertained.  I can’t stress how much I love it when things are anthropomorphized.  It just works.

Also, I adore the noseless wide-mouthed faces and the little hands that look like q-tips.

The bad news in this one-way love affair?  I’m almost done scrolling through the Natalie Dee archives.  The good news is that when I’m done with the cartoons, there WILL be more (she updates daily) and she’s also got blog pages that I’ve barely read yet.  It’s a good, funny, personable blog.  The first entry details Natalie trying to cook an emu egg that she purchased at Whole Foods.  She also runs an advice column from time to time in those pages.

As someone who dreams of chucking in my day job of helping disabled students get support during University (it’s not nearly as exciting as it sounds) to sit around all day in my jammies thinking of funny things to say and occasionally watching daytime tv/playing video games, I really admire this woman.  She has made it work and is living the dream.  I found a good interview with Natalie at venuszine.com  (OK…so I did a little bit of e-stalking…)  Here’s some wise words for those of you out there who reach for that golden ring of creative fulfillment/working from your home as well:

“Making comics is just like taking a crap,” says Dee. “It’s necessary for my well-being, and it is sometimes enjoyable… When I make comics, I don’t analyze them afterwards, like, ‘Is this too dirty?’ or, ‘Is this too cutesy?’ or, ‘Is this too weird?’ or, ‘Is this too messed up?’. I don’t care what people think. I make comics to express myself. You don’t write in your diary with the thought of someone who might break into your bedroom and read it. That defeats the purpose.”
