Having access to all of your files, emails is main advantage of webOS

What it is – a virtual machine that lives online. When logged in it closely resembles your desktop (after tweaking) including the menus and icons. In most cases you can even customize the wallpaper. Once you’ve uploaded files you’ll have access no matter what PC you are using.

WebOS/Webtop/Cloud providers – there’s probably more webOS providers than I’m aware of but three that come to mind, in no particular order are:

G.ho.st (http://g.ho.st)
GlideOS (http://glideos.com)
Icloud (http://icloud.com)

Advantage – the speed of the computer you use to access the webtop doesn’t depend so much on the processor but more on the internet connection.

Synchronization/File uploads – typically, three options exist:

1) upload files one at a time
2) upload files in batches, or
3) use the built-in sync feature that updates files on ALL of your machines. Just select the version for the PC you are currently using and download the installer. Then enter your login information and set utility options. Choose sync in both directions – set conflict resolution to keep the newest version of each file.

In an apparent attempt to simplify the concepts it errs on the side of inaccuracy. The concerns are described and corrected below the image.

The version labels for Documentum objects are strings and not decimal numbers. They are strings even for the implicit version labels (automatically assigned by Content Server using a number-based format), some of which may be considered to be decimal numbers (
1.2
,
3.4
, etc.). But the comparison ends right there. For example,
2.3.1.2
is not a decimal number but a valid version number. Decimal numbers don’t have multiple decimal points. “Increasing version number by a tenth” is also inaccurate because increasing the decimal number
1.9
by a tenth should give you
2.0
but a minor increment of the version number
1.9
gives you
1.10
as the new version. Further,
1.1
and
1.10
would be identical as decimal numbers but duplicate version numbers are not allowed in a version tree. Particularly, these last two points make the decimal analogy egregious.

This version label should be
5.0.1.0
since a branch is created by appending
.1.0
to the parent version. There are always odd number of dots or points (not decimal points) in an implicit version label, so
5.0.1
is not even a valid implicit version number.

Webtop.

• All of the files you need to touch are in the <application root>/webtop directory

• Copy files to /webtop/custom to modify them

• Do not modify any of the files in their place – Only modify copies you have created in your custom directory

• Do not modify the files that ship with the Web Development Kit in its place – make a copy of the file and put it in the /custom/ directory. Extend the source file, and make whatever changes to that file.

• If you modify any of the files that ship with Webtop, and they are subsequently updated, you will have to rework your customizations. This can be a costly and very frustrating task.

•There are several application layers in the /webtop directory. • Each layer has its own configuration and UI files. In particular, each layer has an app.xml file. By repeatedly extending app.xml, we establish the hierarchy of the layers.

•Applications higher in the stack have their configuration files read before files lower in the stack. Configuration files in a higher level override configuration instructions in files in lower levels.

•The foundation of the application layers is the wdk layer. The wdk layer defines most of the controls, actions, and components used to create WDK applications. These application widgets are used for both desktop and web-based applications.

From the wording, many may think it could have something to do with lifecycle definition (dm_policy,

From the wording, many may think it could have something to do with lifecycle definition (dm_policy, specifically) for an object. If you think so, please keep reading.

Here is the decription taken from Documentum Content Server Object Reference Manual.

Indicates the current life cycle status of the type or property.

Valid values are:

1, Currently in use

2, For future use

3, Obsolete

The default is 1 (currently in use).

The description introduces the idea of life cycle statusfor type and property. The possible value for life_cycle is fixed, and it must be one of the three pre-defined values.

From Documentum object modal, we know dmi_dd_common_info has two subtypes, dmi_dd_attr_info and dmi_dd_type_info, which are used for further defining attributes or types respectively.

After careful examination, it was found out that Documentum Application Builder (DAB) can be used to change life_cycle for both dmi_dd_attr_info and dmi_dd_type_info.

The property life_cycle is also called Type Lifecycleby DAB when it is used for a type. In the general tab from type property window, a Type Lifecycle drop-down list is provided to modify the value for life_cycle. The DAB help states:

Select ... a lifecycle stage from the Type Lifecycle drop-down list.

Valid values for the Type Lifecycle drop-down list are Current, Future, and Obsolete. This field is a hint to applications. A well-behaved application does not display this object type unless the value is Current.

Now the meaning of life_cycle for dmi_dd_type_info becomes much clear. It merely indicates the status of a type itself, and has nothing to do with dm_policy. For a well-behaved application, a type with non-current Type LifeCycle would be treated as if it does not exist.

Webtop (both 5.3 and 6.5) is ‘good’ application that does not list obsolete or future types in the type selection drop-down list from both importing and new document components. A normal user would never know the existence of these ‘obsolete’ or ‘future’ types.

On the contrary, Documentum Administrator (DA) lists all the types no matter which life_cycle value a type has. It’s understandable, because DA is an administrative tool to manipulate these types. However, there is no way to check the value of life_cycle of types in current DA version (till 6.5SP1). Hopefully one day DA will have the feature to show the value and maybe update them as well.

Similarly, the attribute propery window has a Attribute Lifecycle dropdown list defined in its Advanced tab. The DAB help provides:

Select a lifecycle stage from the Attribute Lifecycle drop-down box.

DAB stores this value in the data dictionary as life_cycle. The possible values are Current, Future, and Obsolete. This field is a hint to applications. A well-behaved application does not display this object type attribute unless the value is Current.

The object reference manual (v6.5) stated that r_component_label, r_composite_id, r_composite_label and r_order_no from dm_sysobject were no longer used. But an out-of-box repository showed only r_composite_id and r_composite_label were marked as obsolete. The only one that was marked as ‘for future use’ was a_application_type.

Interestingly, both DA and Webtop are not ‘well-behaved’ applications in terms of treating those non-current attributes. You can view Application Type, Composite IDs and Composite Version (label_text of those attributes, shown as field name) for dm_sysobject objects when ‘Show all properties’ is checked for either DA or Webtop.

I am a huge fan of having access to my files anywhere, anytime. On a friend’s computer, at home, on my mobile device (the iPhone), etc. Securely, of course…

I have written about file storage and sync’ing before, a lot of them are freemium (you need to pay for extra storage, more features, etc.). A few I’ve found have unlimited storage, like MediaFire.

Sometimes file storage is not enough, we need file editing capabilities on the go. Well, there is Google Docs. Zoho suite, Adobe Buzzword and many other collaborative editing tools out there.

Also, having a neat little Webtop (desktop on the cloud) can be an interesting concept as well and it is evolving little by little.

EyeOS and Cloudo seem to be the most evolved of those competing in this space.

Watch out for Tonido as well, especially for those scared of putting their files out there on a server controlled by other people, well, Tonido lets you easily share files from your computer with not need for uploads… basically unlimited storage (for as long as there is space on your hard drive)… not WebOS, but pretty close and might actually work better than “desktops on the cloud” for now.

Usually organisations store documents such as ‘New Employee Information’, ‘Travel

Usually organisations store documents such as ‘New Employee Information’, ‘Travel Checklist’ etc in Documentum and reference them from the Intranet.

They would normally hard-code document’s Documentum DRL on the Intranet pages like the below:

http://<AppServer:Port>/webtop/drl/objectId/0900295580ccd247

Let’s say the end-user has Read access for the above document and when he clicks on the link it would automatically open the document (Assuming you are using Single Sign-On and already logged into intranet; or else you will be presented with Webtop login).

There is a small problem with the above link. Every time the document is revised, you have to keep updating the DRL on the Intranet to reflect the new objectId. Otherwise users will be presented with a Webtop screen asking if you want to Open the Current version of the document. You can avoid this extra screen by slightly modifying the DRL on the Intranet as shown below:

http://<AppServer:Port>/webtop/drl/objectId/0900295580ccd247/versionLabel/CURRENT

This would ensure that Intranet link always Opens the Current version of the document without bothering users everytime they access the link.

You can also modify the DRL slightly to open the PDF rendition of the document (if exists) as follows:

http://<AppServer:Port>/webtop/drl/objectId/0900295580ccd247/versionLabel/CURRENT/format/pdf

RAMALLAH, PALESTINE; MODI’IN, ISRAEL. Feb 23, 2009. The G.ho.st Virtual Computer (VC) today introduced a revolutionary patent-pending feature allowing users to have their desktop and file storage in the cloud and still take advantage of their favorite local applications like Microsoft Office.
“Up to now users had to choose between the advantages of the Virtual Computer – available everywhere, no admin, free of charge – versus the familiarity of Microsoft Office, said CEO, Zvi Schreiber, “now, the two work together perfectly at the click of a button”.
The G.ho.st Virtual Computer Web OS provides a personal desktop, applications and 5GB of files storage, called the G.ho.st Drive, all inside a web page at http://g.ho.st. Now, any document of type .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx which is uploaded to the G.ho.st Drive or created in the G.ho.st Drive can be edited directly in Microsoft Office, if available on the local computer, by simply pressing “Edit in MS Office”. When MS Office is not available, users always have the Zoho® office suite available within their G.ho.st Virtual Computer.
This latest G.ho.st release also includes faster performance, a media library, importing of bookmarks and tagging.

About G.ho.st®
G.ho.st® offers every person in the world a free Virtual Computer (VC). G.ho.st is simply pronounced “ghost”, an acronym of Global hosted operating system but is written G.ho.st with two dots because a URL (web address) must have dots! The G.ho.st Virtual Computer includes almost everything you would have in a physical computer – a desktop, file storage (like a disk drive) and applications (apps).
But unlike a physical computer, your Virtual Computer (VC) is “hosted” in a professional data center somewhere in the Internet “cloud” and is accessible as a web page in any browser. You can run the entire G.ho.st VC from any Internet browser without the need to install any software or “sync” files. Just enter your username and password, and continue using your VC from exactly the state you last left it in.
G.ho.st® is revolutionizing personal computing by providing you with a personal computing environment which is free of charge and which is accessible from any device – mobile or desktop – without the need for install or sync. G.ho.st® frees you from being tied to any one device – you can change computer or use shared computers as often as you like.

As if reading the news the past few months hasn’t been depressing enough with the worldwide economic

As if reading the news the past few months hasn’t been depressing enough with the worldwide economic downturn, the current conflict going on in Gaza had to happen to bring the news down to a whole new level of sadness. With each passing day it seems less likely that there will ever be a real peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and yet, as the current conflict unravels, one company, with an office in the Israeli city of Modi’in and another in the West Bank city of Ramallah seems to have found a solution.

That company, G.ho.st, is the only joint venture between Israelis and Palestinians and is defying the odds and difficulties that have arisen from strong sentiments on both sides. Founded in 2006, G.ho.st is short for Global Hosting Operating Systems and provides its 100,000 and growing users with a free vitual desktop that allows them to store items from their desktops and files and to access them from any computer connected to the Internet. G.ho.st calls it a virtual computer or VC.

The company is made up of 35 Palestinians who do software programming and are led by Director, Tareq Maayah and 6 Israelis, including CEO, Zvi Schreiber. Though the offices are relatively close to each other (under 6 miles away), because of restrictions, workers usually have to communicate via video conference and don’t have leisurely access to visiting each other. While the Palestinians are paid less than their Israeli counterparts (because the cost of living is less), both the Palestinians and Israelis have equal shares in the company.

According to correspondence I had with Schreiber this week, this model worked well and thrived during the relative peace that took place from the time G.ho.st was founded and, even now, is continuing to.

Schreiber explained that despite everyone’s concerns about the current conflict, in which employees on both sides have family and/or friends who are affected, work is still going on as usual and that the team, which includes people who worked through a previous conflict at their last job, is prepared to continue to work even if the situation were to spread to the West Bank.

Perhaps the secret to G.ho.st’s success and resilience of its employees so far has been the care that’s been taken to keep and maintain the common ground between employees in both offices. Prior to the latest conflict, the company would manage to get permits to bring everyone together in Israel for valuable team activities, meals, business updates etc. Because of the conflict though, Schreiber said that everyone is now (understandably) worried about the safety of their families and friends on both sides and there’s only so much the company can do about it. His hope however, is that “in some small way our team, working peacefully together, can be an example of what a different reality could look like.”

It’s not just the employees in the company working peacefully together though that can change reality. G.ho.st also has a foundation that is helping lay the groundwork for future joint ventures by creating community computer centers in Ramallah and in mixed Jewish-Arab towns in Israel. Perhaps if more companies were to use G.ho.st’s model in business and in the community, Schreiber’s hope will not only become a reality where the two sides co-exist knowing no borders and, in line with the G.ho.st slogan, no walls.

It is called Ghost because your data is there in the cloud and you can access it from any device. Also it is called Ghost because of the unique collaboration between the Israelis and the Palestinians across the real wall which is around 400mil long. Ghost is a successful model for peace that shows that two entities can bring peace by collaboration and business. Our social mission is to sows the seeds of peace in between the two entities and thus helping the Palestinians to raise and be a key player in the Hi-Tech sector as well as the economy perspective.

Do check the comments for clarification. I have a BIG DOUBT (appears big to me) and my only intentio

Do check the comments for clarification.

I have a BIG DOUBT (appears big to me) and my only intention of writing this post is to get a clarification. So, if you are looking for some knowledge gain over here, you may instead be inviting a BIG PAIN in your head. I am inviting only contributors who can help me clarify MY BIG DOUBT. Anyone else reading this article will be doing so at his own risk.

Okay. Let me start now.
I was reading the first chapter, ECM Basics of Pawan Kumar’s book on Documentum Content Management Foundations and came across the following.

The term Content Server is used in two contexts – the Content Server software that is installed and resides on the file system and the Content Server instance, which is the running process that resides in memory and serves content at runtime. However there is little chance of confusion since the usage is often clear from the context and the term Content Server is typically used without additional qualification (software or process/instance).
A Content Server instance is dedicated to and manages only one repository. However, we will see later in architecture discussion that multiple Content Server instances can be dedicated to the same repository. This is typically done for performance reasons where the multiple Content Server processes divide up the load for serving content from the same repository.

Pawan is pretty clear in what he has mentioned. I got the doubt while relating it to the practical usage.

In practice while creating an environment setup we first install Content Server on a server (after installing database) system and then we create repositories. We can have multiple repositories. What we have now is one installation of Content Server Software and more than one repository.
Once all the installation and configuration process is over (including Content Server, Application Server, Webtop/Custom Application) and the application is ready for use, we can connect to the application through a browser. We get a login screen where we get the drop-down having the repository names to choose from. We can select any repository on the login screen and connect to it after authentication.

Now the thing which I am wondering about: As per the book the repositories have dedicated Content Server Instances. So if we have two repositories, we should as well be having two Content Server Instances which are actually running Processes/Programs. Where can I see these instances? When are they created? How can I make two Content Server Instances to serve single repository?

I don’t have an answer to these questions.
After a lot of brain storming I could think of starting/stopping of docbases using Documentum Server Manager. By starting a docbase we are indeed starting a process or a program. This program for sure is dedicated to the particular repository. So, shall it be correct if I say that by starting a docbase through Server Manager, I am actually starting a Content Server instance?

….BOOOOM….

I am sorry if it is a NON-SENSE of a very HIGH LEVEL, but this was the best I could think of. Even if I assume the statement to be true, how am I going to make an additional Content Server instance to serve the same repository? This is creating a much bigger pain in my head. I am confused and I am sure I am creating pain in my audience’s head too. Just wondering whether docbroker is also involved somewhere in the scene?

Let me stop here. This pain is becoming unbearable and I want to get rid of it.
Die Nutzerfreundlichkeit übertrifft meines Erachtens die der Konkurrenz-Plattformen. Besonders die Funktion einzelne Widgets einfach mit der Maus in ein anderes Tab zu ziehen gefällt mir gut.
