Today I have added some RSS feeds to my blog. The first of which is a feed from Vladstudio. Vladstudio is one of my favorite websites for desktop wallpapers and inspiration. I love his illustrative style and his use of color in most of his works. I also enjoy that he posts tutorials from time to time on how he created his digital works!

The second feed is from Design Milk, which is a collective of architecture, art, home furnishings, interior design…even style and fashion! I love to browse the many different images throughout this feed. Whether it is for inspiration or just to span some time. I hope that you enjoy what you find there also.

The third feed is from WebUrbanist. WebUrbanist is a blog collective showcasing alternative art, urban design and strange architecture. Please, enjoy the feeds as much as I do, and keep coming back for more!

Whether it’s jazz or punk or anything else, you have to fight against the purists who want to narrow

Whether it’s jazz or punk or anything else, you have to fight against the purists who want to narrow the definition. That’s what kills music because it stifles it to death. – Joe Strummer

I am a photography nut. Once I got my camera, there was simply no stopping, and I don’t know how I got by so many years with chintzy disposable cameras. Ugh.

My knowledge is so very minimal, however. I’m about 2 stages behind amateur. Ultra-remedial.

No matter. I need to photograph my travels like I need to eat or breathe.

Because of my newness to this art form, I try to take in as much information as possible in order to formulate what suits me best. I want to be selective without being overly judgmental.

I’ve noticed many folks have a hard time with the transition to digital photography, and I understand. The transition from typewriters to computers was probably equally unsettling for some. It’s okay.

What does tend to bother me, though, are the times I see contempt for a new technology or technique. In this case, I’ve noticed it with HDR photography and infrared photography. Just learning about it, I’m enchanted with some of these photos. But I know there are others who dismiss this style as gimmicky or fraudulent. I think that’s pretty unfair.

Does it matter if the photos have been manipulated? Was there not some creativity involved in the modification? If I had simply painted an actual scene using exaggerated colors, am I being dishonest in my rendering? Isn’t it about my own interpretation?

How can it be dismissed if the end result is so beautiful and thought-provoking? Isn’t that art?

“Seyed Alavi’s Flying Carpet – which you can see at Sacramento Airport – foregoes suggestion in favor of reality. Walk the length of it, and you “fly” the length of the Sacramento River in aerial photography.”

In “Creative Modern Rugs- Mat Designs” we’ve found a myriad of urban-comical rugs to stimulate the imagination – and the conversations in your home. Would you perhaps incorporate either of these precious finds?

Uh…Yes, it is Road Kill Carpet, “a luxurious square of rich carpet adorned at one corner with a messy depiction of an ex-fox.”

Sent to me by Jen Gaugler, fluent in architecture and historic preservation, this website, WebUrbanist is addicting. You might get lost. You will not be able to look away because there are photographs of recycled art and architecture, green architecture, abandoned buildings, beach houses, houses dubbed “amazing,” Greek art, street art, furniture, photography tricks, abandoned cities…it never ends!

The website itself is slightly cumbersome because the advertisements take up half the screen when all we really want to see are the pictures, but it’s still worth your time and scrolling the mouse. Check it out. Think about it. Share comments if you’d like. And you might want to have a clock nearby so you don’t lose your day to architecture (not that that is ever a bad thing, but you might have other responsibilities.)

Well my friend, you are in luck, because today I bring you 20 examples of geek art and artists from website weburbanist.com. You can check out the post here. I ALSO have another page I would like to mention complete with 9 pages of some really great artwork, but I will get to that in a moment.

A little bit about them:

WebUrbanist blog collective writers are interested in all things urban – from urban design to subversive art and strange architecture. We scour the net to find neat new stuff then boil that information down and pack it into an article with relevant images and links, as exhaustive as we can manage on a single subject area. Our team is comprised of web designers, bloggers, architects and other curious urbanists.

Big thanks to site I Am Bored for the posting.

This next website I am bringing to you today is called i-mockery.com. Like I said above, 9 pages of some pretty wild art. This artwork comes from the 2008 I Am 8-Bit show in Los Angeles. I urge everybody who views the page to go slow when scrolling through each page, because there is some really eye-popping stuff. Turn on some cool music while looking through this if you like, its worth it. Here is the post. Reading the blog at the beginning wont be necessary, I pretty much summed it up for you right here! If you find anything cool and interesting such as this post, tell me about it in the comments!

Wow! I’ve always wondered what the future would be like, you know, in that sort of “unforeseeable, distant intangible” sense; I just never thought I’d be living in the midst of it during my lifetime though. One of the great creative websites I frequent, WebUbranist, has just written an article looking forward to the next 100 of green architecture. Some of the concepts covered build off of my previous blog on the PBS mini-series Design: e².

One thing of note: the passive house museum is eireely similar to some of my own subterranean concepts I’ve come up with in my youth. I wonder if I can sue for copyright infringement? If only I had been so proactive!

I was at work today, just putzing around on the internet (shh, don’t tell my boss!) and I came across some articles about this wonderful subversive almost-graffiti artist from England. His names (hopefully obviously) Banksy, and he’s contributed his own flair to places ranging from the Gaza Strip to the British Museum.

I first found out about him through a blog called WebUrbanist, a site that explores urban culture, focusing on visual art from advertising to architecture. I’d been perusing their articles on gurilla advertising, and eventually branched off into Banksy.

He’s frekin amazing. He focuses on pop culture and environmental degradation and the military and EVERYTHING. No one knows who this guy is, either. I mean, even his manifesto isn’t about him–it’s just about how graffiti is a powerful force for (rather questionable) justice.

This also comes down to the fact that I love modern art in all of its forms. I’ll watch modern dance until my eyes hurt, I think I’ll only ever buy modern art for my living spaces, and modern music intrigues me to no end. And this guy has everything I love about modern art: it’s not about individuals, it’s about ideas. It doesn’t even use individuals as examples, it uses archetypes. The colors are always simple and usually subdued. If there’s something that stands out, it’s there for a reason, and the clever satirical poke at society is usually obvious.

So I’m a fan. If he ever gets outed, I’m adding him as a facebook friend.

The travel bug has bitten me again but I fear that I may not have enough vacation time left over after the parents and Patrick visit in July to use on a long-desired, under-planned, and not-really-saved-for trip to Europe.

Sometimes you’re in the mood to wander the ‘net aimlessly but you’re not feeling Perez and all the usual suspects. Say you’re in the mood for something intellectual and architectural, yet completely random, with some culture and a good dollop of modern art thrown in. When you’re in that mood (and who isn’t, really?) that’s when you need to head to WebUrbanist.

This site is the shit. There hasn’t been a single visit where I haven’t come across something unexpected. For instance, right now the latest posts are on shopdropping (the subversive art of reverse shoplifting), the 3 most bizarre micronations in the world, the 7 smallest hotel rooms in the world, and urban camouflage.

If you’re saying “shopdrop who?” and “micronation what?” and “urban camowhazzit?” then that’s precisely why you need to go there. Now. Go now.
