DANCE ASSEMBLY.  This week’s Dance Assembly, featuring Guest Artist Idan Cohen, is required.

SOMA CENTER APPOINTMENTS.  Kim has openings in her schedule for Pilates training sessions. Contact Kim at kim@kgdances.org to begin your somatic training.

SHOW CREWS.  All students in need of hours, please look carefully at the show tech schedule as now posted on the callboard in Nicholas. Anyone interested in joining a show crew must submit a request form to Jacqueline by the end of this week (March 1) at the latest. She will the assign students to shows based on availability, conflicts, and need to graduate!

DEPARTMENT PHOTOSHOOT.  Please note that we will being conducting a photoshoot of the Dance Department in action next Tuesday, March 5. The photographer will be moving through classes throughout the day. Please dress neatly and professionally and place all of your belongings in the locker rooms. We appreciate your cooperation in making the Department look wonderful!

FEBRUARY 25 - Nego Gato Afro-Brazil Music & Dance Ensemble.  Nego Gato Afro-Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble bring to their audiences the rich African influenced rhythms and dances originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, a region known for custom deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of ancestral Africa. 10am & 11:45 am, $8. Information

MARCH 2 – Lustig Dance Theatre.  The premiere of Jungala, which uses a fusion of classical Indian dance and contemporary ballet to tell stories from Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Information, Tickets

MARCH 6 — Art After Hours.  Meagan Woods & Company returns to the Zimmerli to present “Vieux Paris-Paris Nouveau” (“Old Paris-New Paris”), beginning at 7 pm. This original choreographed work captures the preoccupations of Paris circa 1900: a time of growth and industrialization toward the future, as well as nostalgia and heartbreak over the city’s past. This piece surveys the abundance of dance and movement theater forms, ranging from mime to can-can, and from the billowing fabric of Loie Fuller to the improvised forms of Isadora Duncan. Featuring Kyle Marshall, Nicholas Ruiz, and Meagan Woods. MARCH 6 – $5 Paul Taylor Tickets.  The Paul Taylor Dance Company is offering $5 tickets to the March 6 performance of Brandenburgs and Speaking in Tongues in four separate pop-up shops across Manhattan. New York Times article

MARCH 9 & 10, 16 & 17 – Peridance Contemporary Dance Company Spring Season 2013.  Presenting the works of Igal Perry, Dwight Rhoden, Enzo Celli, Sidra Bell, and Ohad Naharin. Student tickets $20. Information, tickets

MARCH 18 — Broadway Backwards 2013.  Broadway Backwards, an annual celebration where gays and lesbians see their stories told through the great songs of musical theatre sung by their favorite Broadway performers. Proceeds benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the LGBT Center in NYC. Faculty member Barbara Angeline will perform. Information

MARCH 22 & 23 — STAGEfest 2013.  The inaugural year of STAGEfest is a vibrant and diverse weekend of theatrical and musical performances, highlighting and celebrating the arts in our region.  Performances will take advantage of many spaces in the Loew’s – mainstage, lobbies, salons, promenades and hallways. Tasty local refreshments will be available at the Grand Lobby Cafe, and an extraordinary display of theatrical costume will enhance this immersive experience. We are presenting duets as part of Moving Two, featuring Kyle Marshall and Meagan Woods. APRIL 14 — 10 HAIRY LEGS.  Professor Randy James’ all male company makes its New Brunswick debut at the Crossroads Theatre, presenting Rook, a new solo for Nick Sciscione with live music, a major revival of Endured Lull with guest artist Aaron Ramos, Claire Porter’s Interview performed by guest artist Tony Bordonaro of Sleep No More, and The Day After Jesus Was Born, commissioned by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. APRIL 27 – JERSEY MOVES!  The second part of this year’s festival brings a diverse program of works from Timothy Kochka with The Davis Academy, Bani Ray, Nimbus Dance Works, New Jersey Tap Ensemble, Dance Tactics, and American Repertory Ballet. Information

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES & INTENSIVES

DANCERS WANTED.  Robert Benford will be teaching a clinic on drumming for dance class for the Rutgers Day of Percussion. I’m looking for 8 dancers to help me illustrate the principals of accompanying by demonstrating phrases from technique classes. I can accept any level, and both women and men. Saturday March 16, the opening weekend of spring break. We’ll have an organizing session in room 110 at 9:30 am the same day, and then present the workshop in the studio from 10:30-11:15 am.  You should be done by 11:30.  Pay is $25 per dancer.  If you’re in town that day, I’d love for you to come and take part, and help to interest a new generation of percussionists in playing for dance.  Contact rbenford@rci.rutgers.edu.  Thanks! -Robert

Workshop Series:  LMA/LOD for Dance & Movement Educators.  This series of four workshops is designed specifically with the dance and movement educator in mind.  Basic components of Laban Movement Analysis and Language of Dance will be explored, along with corresponding Motif Notation, in an experiential and integrated format. Participants will actively explore concepts individually and collaboratively and will also consider applications in practice.  A workshop packet will be provided for each workshop including theory concepts, Motif, ideas for application and additional resources. Celebrating Black History Month with Dance! Enjoy this video about Sheri “Sparkle” Williams, a 49-year old dancer in Ohio, who has been dancing for 38 years—making her one of the oldest female professional dancers in the country. When she was just 11 years old Williams began dancing for Jeraldyne Blunden’s Dayton Contemporary Dance Company—one of the first dance companies to support African American dancers. See the video

I will send out a weekly email with the link to the new updates on the blog so you can access it quickly! I also encourage you to follow the blog so you know when a new post has been updated.

I also encourage you to use this forum as a way to build community, get to know one another since we are all across the country, and to build a collaborative environment.

This week’s announcements and information:

1. Please work on communication with students regarding course end dates and final exams. Many students are
nearing their course end dates and need the following reminders:
A. They need to take their final before the course end date. (This can be found by looking at enrollments
in Genius or in Grad)
B. They need a reminder that they can use handwritten notes on their final exam.

2. Many students are at their course end date or have taken the final exam and their courses are not being finalized within 24 hours. Please watch this daily! The affiliates often need these finalized immediately in order to transfer grades and/or complete transcripts. It is a policy that grades and courses are finalized within 24 hours of final exam completion (unless the student has failed the exam and is retaking it).

3.  SKYPE–We are no longer requiring Skype as a tool for synchronous communication.  We are excited to announce that we are in the beginning stages of Blackboard Collaborate implementation.  This should be fully integrated and ready for a roll-out and training mid-spring.  This is a huge undertaking, but very exciting as it will allow us to see when our students are online, hold virtual office hours, and offer synchronous tutoring in your very own virtual office!

At this time, please communicate with students what times you are online watching email in case they need immediate attention.  These will be your “office hours” until we have BBC fully integrated.

Happy Spring 2013 and welcome to all new and returning students and faculty!

In particular, we welcome new guest faculty Stefanie Batten Bland, Assaf Benchetrit and Stephen O’Connell this semester. Please read more about these exciting artists below. We also welcome guest artist in residence Idan Cohen, from Israel at the end of February, and I encourage you to visit Idan’s website listed in his bio.

We are proud that our BFA choreographers will be showing their works at the College Partnership and the American College Dance Festival this semester and look forward to seeing all works that will premiere on the Student Concert and the Senior Concert.

Please continue to keep yourself strong and healthy by using our Soma Center in conjunction with Kim Gibilisco. I wish everyone a wonderful semester full of creativity and success!

2-Day Workshop with Benoit-Swan Pouffer
Led by Artistic Director Benoit-Swan Pouffer and Ballet Master Alexandra Damiani, each 3-hour session will include a warm up that focuses on preparing the body for a variety of different contemporary languages. The goal is to give dancers the opportunity to learn company repertory and to work with the Artistic Staff and professional dancers in a rehearsal-like process.

DANCERS DOWNTOWN.  BFA alumni Morgan Preston and Scott Schneider are featured on a new poster at two bus stop locations in downtown New Brunswick. One is on the Starbucks side of the street just before Church St. and the other is on the opposite side of the street outside Subway. We love to see our beautiful dancers representing downtown!
