Treatment is helping. I am glad I am doing it, but changing behaviors and dealing with life in the right way is just not easy.<br />
I will purge.<br />
I will feel bad until tomorrow probably mid day&#8230;</p>
<p>Turning back the time is not an option.<br />
But I have to look ahead.<br />

<p>Well that was a nasty shock. I was prepared for 64.something, but that 65.2 figure was a bit like a slap around the face. However, unlike before when it would have put me into a funk of feeling bad about myself for the day, the exercise of taking a photo every day and seeing the correlation between the scales and how my body looks, gave me some perspective.</p>
<p>Whilst I can see some difference between my 64.1kgs photo and today&#8217;s &#8211; my stomach looks bigger as do my thighs &#8211; it&#8217;s not as if they&#8217;ve doubled in size of anything. There&#8217;s a difference. A difference that few people would notice, especially not when I&#8217;ve got clothes on.</p>
<p>However, even though I know that few people will notice and even if in the photos the difference isn&#8217;t massive, it doesn&#8217;t mean I&#8217;m comfortable with this weight gain. It needs to go. If the scales don&#8217;t say around the 63.4kgs mark (or under!) then I don&#8217;t truly feel at ease.</p>
<p>I thought I would go to the gym after finishing work, but I&#8217;m still so tired from being ill, I just don&#8217;t have the energy to go like I used to. I&#8217;ve only exercised three times since last Saturday. On a normal week, I might have taken Sunday off, but I&#8217;d have exercised every other day. It&#8217;ll be interesting to see the photos of myself when I go back to the gym. As much as I love going to the gym and I adore the effect it has on my body, it leads different set of body worries. (I&#8217;m not sure what wouldn&#8217;t lead to a different set of body worries for me, but that&#8217;s another issue.)</p>
<p>On the whole, I don&#8217;t think I did too badly in the genetic stakes. My father is still quite an athletic looking for a man in his 60s and my mother &#8216;kept her figure&#8217; (don&#8217;t you love that sexist and old fashioned phrase? Neither do I) until her 50s. So I think I have that on my side. What I&#8217;ve also inherited from my parents is the ability to gain muscle and definition relatively easily. This is a good and bad thing. It&#8217;s nice to have tone, but it can be hard to balance being strong with not looking bulky. On the whole though I shouldn&#8217;t really complain &#8211; at least my body acts in a predictable manner. When I exercise, I lose weight and tone up and when I don&#8217;t, the opposite happens. There&#8217;s a girl who goes to my gym who is strong and fit, but no matter what she does (I&#8217;ve seen her in there for nearly two years), she just doesn&#8217;t develop tone. She might be ok with that, but that would drive me around the bend. If I&#8217;m going to work out I want something to show for it.</p>
<p>Although the outfit looks a bit funny from the front with the vest sitting over the side tie of the skirt, on the whole, I&#8217;m happy with today&#8217;s outfit and I felt comfortable in it.</p>

Those who intend to get married should follow their doctor’s instructions to avoid health problems, Pre-marital Screening Committee chairman Dr Ahmed Kamal Naji has said.</p>
<p>“This should be coupled with a sound diet system, physical exercise, observing weight, giving up smoking, decreasing intake of stimulants like tea, coffee, carbonated drinks and sugars for their negative effect on fertility and fetus growth,” he explained. </p>
<p>Dr Naji said couples should never take any medicines without consulting their doctors.<br />
“Women should take folic acid before pregnancy to minimise any deformation to the fetal nervous tube. For women with some types of heart diseases, the case has to be stable before pregnancy for the sake of the mother’s life,” he advised. </p>
<p>He added that during pregnancy, the mother should have appropriate treatment which does not affect the foetus, especially medicines taken for thyroid gland, epilepsy, blood clotting, blood pressure and diabetes. “All these are necessary to avoid any hard and lengthy trouble in the future,” he stressed.</p>
<p>The national pre-marital check-up and counselling programme, which was launched recently, screens would-be couples for potential inherited infections or diseases they could give to their  babies, especially in close-blood marriages. </p>
<p>Family marriages play a great role in the infection of inherited diseases caused by recessive inheritance, such as the sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. </p>
<p>Dr Naji said according to the type of the disease, avoidance possibilities can be discussed.</p>
<p>However, he said screening did not include tests that check fertility of any of the couples.</p>
<p>A statement issued recently by the pre-marital screening committee has emphasised that it did not mean that marriages outside the family will guarantee that babies will be free of inherited diseases or even recessive inherited diseases. </p>
<p>“That is why it is important to conduct certain tests to determine if the person is carrying the disease. </p>
<p>Therefore, pre-marital screening is important for relative and non-relative couples,” it says. </p>
<p>The statement explains that the potential infection of congenital diseases among couples of family relationships is higher. </p>
<p>“The closer the relation, the higher is the infection as every individual, regardless of age or health condition, has about 5 -10 defective genes which do not cause any disease for the person carrying them, as he possesses similar genes that are disinfected.”</p>
<p>“When the couple carrying infected genes get married, their children might receive double dose of those genes, that is to say, each of the father and mother gives infected genes. This causes health problems according to the type of the infected gene.”</p>
<p>The Supreme Council of Health has divided the diseases to be screened for into two categories: contagious and inherited diseases. </p>
<p>The purpose of including contagious diseases such as hepatitis B and C, and HIV/Aids is to avoid some of them through treatment or vaccination, or else to warn the other party against potential infection.</p>
<p>Other tests in the premarital screening includes haemoglobin abnormalities (thalassemia and sickle cell anemia), hemophilia (A and B) and syphilis. </p>
<p>“Many of the inherited diseases have no cure, some are difficult to treat and their treatment might be very costly and might require some advice or counselling in addition to other lengthy procedures,” Dr Naji said. </p>
<p>He added that premarital screening has become an appropriate, effective and less expensive tool to combat and prevent inherited diseases, adding that it implied great benefits for the whole society as it protects against inherited diseases which cost much to be cured or treated.</p>

<p>Made eye of round roast tonight.  Turned out DELICIOUS.  Medium &#8211; rare in the middle, very yummy.</p>
<p>Workout posed some unexpected difficulties.  I was set to use a 12kg KB and go for full reps, but that 20:00 cutoff got me thinking.  I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;d get under that time.  25:00 maybe, but would that still have been a good option?  I took the half-rep scheme and went up to Rx KB weight.</p>
<p>HSPU&#8217;s were good, 10, 5.  Pull ups were okay &#8211; 12, 6, 2; grip just wasn&#8217;t good enough to keep it to two sets.  KB swings gave me trouble, though.</p>

<p>At rep 17 my left knee (inside, near/under the kneecap edge) started twinging.  I DO NOT LIKE my knees twinging.  Especially my left one.  I got paranoid, and broke the swings, rubbed at my knee for a moment and went back at it.  The next two reps also hurt, and as I like my knees, I moved straight to sit-ups.  I went through 30 sit-ups easily and felt guilty and pissed at myself, and got in my last 6 reps to hit 25.  I am not happy with this&#8230; maybe I should&#8217;ve just rested until I felt my knee was okay, but I didn&#8217;t, and I&#8217;m fine with my decision&#8230; mostly.  I am at least happy that the final 6 reps were painless.  I suspect the old scar tissue was pulling funny or something&#8230; I&#8217;d tried shifting my stance, but that hadn&#8217;t helped earlier.  The rest did it.  I have no real idea what was happening.  *sigh*</p>
<p>Finally, burpees just sucked as usual.  Mostly sets of 5 with progressively shorter breaks, I kept trying to cut down the time in between.  It worked out.</p>
<p>I think I may just make a Thursday, if I&#8217;m awake enough for it.  <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />   I&#8217;d like to head in tomorrow before all the holiday craziness.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I did it again. The last time was on the 15th. I ate so poorly that I ran out of energy and felt like I was coming down with something. I went to bed this evening at 7:30 PM feeling utterly nauseous and lifeless, slept for four hours and now I&#8217;m up again&#8230;not feeling much better. I tried brushing my teeth to clear out the junk food taste, but it isn&#8217;t going away. Yech!</p>
<p>My downfall wasn&#8217;t chocolate or snacks, but greasy, fat-laden chinese food&#8230;the pupu platter type foods. I&#8217;ve been told by more than one friend in heart-to-heart talks that they have a fat craving, not a sugar or salt craving. I&#8217;m beginning to understand the concept.</p>
<p>I started the day yesterday with breakfast out with friends and had coffee and two poached eggs on whole wheat toast. Not a bad start, you think? I failed to ask that the toast be unbuttered (dry) and chose to eat the butter. Not a great failure in itself, but for me and my dairy allergy, it is simply a no-no. It wouldn&#8217;t have been so bad if I had followed up with a good lunch, but I went shopping and ran errands, ending about 4:30 PM without eating anything else. A second bad choice to let it go so long.</p>
<p>On the way home I convinced myself that I wanted hot food immediately, that means takeout of some sort, and I settled on chinese, which was the third big failure. Nothing I ordered had any nutritional value at all. My mind and body did not demand salad bar or soup (as I hope this challenge year will make the default for takeout meals). I enjoyed the first few bites, but ended up feeding a lot of the items into me without enjoyment. It was certainly not &#8220;feeding&#8221; my hunger at all. I literally ran out of energy again&#8230;not just rundown, but really feeling nauseous. I didn&#8217;t get to my apple or the green tea either, though they might have helped.</p>
<p>What am I doing to myself !?! This has to stop. My whole effort has taken a slider! Now that I am writing here I know that I last did this to myself 9 days ago. No wonder my body is in such sad shape. Completely unconscious eating and it doesn&#8217;t fulfill any physical need at all!</p>
<p>Hmmm&#8230;I wonder if there is an emotional need that it filled? There&#8217;s a thought, but what would it be? I was out and about all day, busy and with friends &#8230;so not isolation. (The life of a writer can be very low on physical human contact.) I wasn&#8217;t feeling stressed and had no tense moments. Not a lot of laughter, but some good moments. I even accomplished quite a few entries on my list and got to cross them out! So not a lack of accomplishments either. No further cold/flu symptoms, so no underlying illnesses. Hmmm&#8230;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure what drives me to &#8220;crave&#8221; the empty, low energy, sickening food items, but I sure did think it was a good thing to do about 8 hours ago. And I even paid good money for it. I am a work in progress. Tonight I can <em>clearly</em> see that today&#8217;s food choice is one that has to go. It has no redeeming characteristics!! What was I thinking!!</p>
<p>I was &#8220;saving&#8221; some of the more serious challenges for the first of the year, but tonight I see no reason to postpone! My 11th day challenge is to eat 10 servings fruits/vegetables a day and keep track. That is a lot, of course, but absolutely do-able. If I get all 10 in everyday, I won&#8217;t have room or craving for fat junk. And that is a very good thing.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t think I will be writing here tomorrow as I will be enjoying Christmas Eve in Boxborough with family&#8230;and healthier food choices, I hope!</p>

And eating.  Probably blew a weeks worth of dieting in one hour. However, I am back on the exercising. It won&#8217;t erase the eating binge but it does comfort me a little to know I&#8217;m not so out of control that I can&#8217;t even exercise. On another note entirely, have a very Merry Christmas and  a Happy New Year!</p>
