Raquel Welch (born Jo Raquel Tejada, September 5, 1940) is a Golden Globe-winning American actress.

In 1959, Welch played the title role in the famous Ramona Pageant, a yearly outdoor play at Hemet, California, which is based on the novel Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson and Bob Biloe.

She became a weather forecaster at KFMB, a local San Diego television station. Because of her heavy schedule, she decided to leave college. Her marriage broke up and she moved with her two children, Damon and Latanne, to Dallas, Texas, where she modeled for Neiman Marcus and worked as a cocktail hostess, intending to move on to New York City from there.

Instead, Welch moved back to California and found a place in Los Angeles and started making the rounds of the movie studios. She was cast in bit parts in two films and in the television shows Bewitched, McHale’s Navy, and The Virginian, as well as on the weekly variety series The Hollywood Palace as a billboard girl and presenter of acts.

Welch’s first featured role came in the beach film A Swingin’ Summer, which led to a contract with 20th Century Fox. She was subsequently cast in a leading role in the sci-fi hit Fantastic Voyage (1966), which made her a star. She was the last star created under the studio system.

On loan out to Hammer Studios in Britain, Welch starred in the remake of One Million Years B.C. striking an iconic pose in a prehistoric animal-skin bikini. After her appearance as lust incarnate in the hit Bedazzled, she returned to the U.S. and appeared in the Western film Bandolero!, with James Stewart and Dean Martin, which was followed by the private-eye drama Lady in Cement with Frank Sinatra.

Welch’s most controversial role by far came in the notorious Myra Breckinridge with Mae West. She took the part as the film’s transsexual heroine in an attempt to be taken seriously as an actress, but the movie turned out to be a dismal failure.

Welch became one of the leading sex symbols of the 1960s and 1970s. Her most memorable publicity still for One Million Years B.C. became a bestselling poster. Playboy called her the “Most Desired Woman” of the 1970s.

In 1970, Welch teamed up with Tom Jones and producer/choreographer David Winters of Winters-Rosen Productionsfor the TV special “Raquel!”, considered by some viewers to be a classic pairing together of 1970s pop-culture icons in their prime. The multi million-dollar TV song-and-dance extravaganza was filmed around the world, from Paris to Mexico. The show featured lavish production numbers of classic songs from the era, extravagant costumes, and notable guest performances, including John Wayne and Bob Hope in the Wild West.

In 1974, Welch won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Three Musketeers.

The actress was due to star in an 1982 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, but was fired by the producers a few days into production (allegedly, she was taking too long to get ready each day). She was replaced with Debra Winger. Welch successfully sued, collecting a $15 million dollar settlement.

In addition to her break out special, Raquel!, her television appearances include the TV movies The Legend of Walks Far Woman and Right to Die in which she turned in a stirring performance as a woman stricken with Lou Gehrig’s disease, and in the PBS series American Family, about a Mexican American family in East Los Angeles. She has appeared in the night-time soap opera Central Park West and made infomercials and exercise videos.

In 1987, she flirted with a pop singing career, releasing the dance single “This Girl’s Back In Town.” She has performed in a one-woman nightclub musical act in Las Vegas and has starred on Broadway in Woman of the Year, receiving praise for following Lauren Bacall in the title role, and in Victor/Victoria, having less success following Julie Andrews and Liza Minnelli in the title roles.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the TV drama Right to Die (1987).

In a 1997 episode of the comedy series Seinfeld entitled The Summer of George, Welch played a highly temperamental version of herself, assaulting series characters Kramer and Elaine, the former because he fired her from an acting job and the latter because Welch mistakenly thought that Elaine was mocking her.

She also appeared as a guest on the popular American TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as Sabrina’s flamboyant Aunt Vesta.

She appeared in Welcome to the Captain, which premiered on CBS television on February 4, 2008.

Otro de los estrenos de mitad de temporada es «Welcome to the Captain», una comedia que la CBS estrenó el pasado 4 de febrero con unos aceptables datos de audiencia.

Argumento: Josh Flug, un guionista ganador de un Oscar pero actualmente en horas bajas, es convencido por su amigo Marty para trasladarse a «El Capitán», un emblemático edificio de Hollywood lleno de estrafalarios residentes.

Esta serie viene a confirmar el bajísimo nivel de los estrenos de esta temporada, con un producto que en cualquier año televisivo normal jamás habría visto la luz verde. Y es que es increíble que a estas alturas estemos hablando del estreno de una comedia que en sus 20 minutos de metraje no consigue arrancar no una carcajada, sino ni siquiera una media sonrisa al espectador. Tomando el baremo de esta temporada, «Welcome to the Captain» estaría al nivel de «The Cavemen», aunque hay que reconocer que al menos ésta es más amena que la serie de los cavernícolas.

Extenderse más en esta serie no tiene mucho sentido y es que si muestras una comedia a 20 personas y ninguna de ellas esboza la más ligera sonrisa, te encuentras ante dos alternativas: o la serie es mala, o es que no es una comedia. Teniendo en cuenta de que como drama la serie no tiene ni pies ni cabeza, habrá que optar por la primera alternativa. Por lo demás, guiones sin chispa, personajes tópicos(guaperas ligón, nervioso indeciso, viejo escéntrico, madura come-hombres…), situaciones desgastadas (malentendidos, encuentros, desencuentros…) y por lo general absolutamente nada que distinga a esta serie de las demás o la haga mínimamente interesante.

Como viene siendo habitual en los últimos tiempos la serie está interpretada por algunos jóvenes sin ningún talento y algunos veteranos de postín. En este caso los jóvenes son Fran Kranz y Chris Klein («American Pie»), mientras que el grupo de veteranos está conformado por el magnífico Jeffrey Tambor («Arrested Development») y una imposible Raquel Welch.

Nada más que agregar, incluso las comedias más tontas pueden ser recomendables si terminan haciendo algo de gracia, pero como no es el caso, recomiendo abstenerse a toda costa.

Nach einer längeren Pause wird es Zeit, dass wir uns hier mal wieder ein wenig mit dem Thema „Serien“ auseinadersetzen – schließlich nimmt dieses Thema mittlerweile einen durchaus nicht unbedeutenden Teil meiner Freizeitgestaltung ein, wie man im Folgenden unschwer erkennen kann. Denn heute werde ich Euch mit dem ersten Teil meines ultimativen Serienguides zur Season 07/08* beglücken!

Im Laufe der nächsten zwei, drei Wochen (Notiz: sich selbst unter Zeitdruck setzen, um der Prokrastination vorzubeugen) wird es hier also regelmäßig Postings mit Kurzeinschätzungen zu ein oder zwei Serien aus der abgelaufenen Season geben.

Man kann aus der Reihenfolge der Auflistung, so man denn möchte, eine aufsteigende Positinierung in meiner Gunst ablesen – allerdings ist diese eher von der Tagesform abhängig und daher habe ich denn auch auf eine konkrete Nummerierung verzichtet.

Fest steht jedenfalls, dass es sich fast nur um Serien handelt, die mir gut gefallen haben – kein Wunder, denn sonst würde ich in der Regel wohl auch kaum durchgängig am Ball bleiben. Soviel Freizeit habe ich nun auch wieder nicht…

*) Die „Season 07/08“ umfasst hier auch die eine oder andere Serie(nstaffel) aus früheren Seasons – halt das was ich in den letzten rund 12 Monaten so geschaut habe.

Back to you

Mit Kelsey Grammar (Frasier, Cheers) und Patricia Heaton (Alle lieben Raymond) standen für Back To You zwei sehr bekannte Gesichter der Sitcom-Szene vor der Kamera und dementsprechend waren die Erwartungen an BTY recht hoch – zumal mit James Burrows, Stephen Levitan und Christopher Lloyd auch im Hintergrund bekannte Namen arbeiteten. Doch leider konnte diese äußerst konventionelle Sitcom nur wenig begeistern.

Die Geschichte um einen egozentrischen, alternden Nachrichtensprecher, der nach einem Skandal wieder zu seinem Heimatsender zurückkehrt und dort auf seine alte Liebe und Konkurrentin trifft, ist zwar ganz nett aber doch auch nicht gerade innovativ.

Das Problem liegt allerdings eher im Humor und den Dialogen der Serie, die zwar recht unterhaltsam daherkommen, aber eben auch sehr altbacken. Man könnte im Grunde von einer Serie sprechen, die ca. 10-15 Jahre zu spät kommt und wesentlich besser in die 90er Jahre gepasst hätte. Dass es dennoch eine „guckbare“ Serie ist, liegt sicherlich am durchaus guten Darstellerensemble, die insgesamt doch ziemlich gut harmonieren. Aber letztlich war BTY auch bei mir nur eine Serie, deren Folgen ich dann geschaut habe, als sonst nix anderes mehr zu gucken war. Daher kam dann auch durchaus zu Recht die Absetzung.

Meine Bewertung: 4 von 10 Gabeln [für Season 1]

Welcome to the Captain

Ebenfalls etwas altbacken daher kam auch Welcome to the Captain, eine Serie, die erst zur Midseason gestartet wurde. In WTTC geht es um einen jungen Autoren, der in ein Wohngebäude in L.A. namens El Capitan zieht, um zu versuchen sich beruflich in Hollywood zu etablieren. Allerdings verbringt er seine Zeit dort hauptsächlich damit, dass er sich mit einer ganzen Reihe an verschrobenen Bewohnern auseinandersetzen muss, die vorwiegend versuchen sich in das Leben der anderen einzumischen. Darunter befindet sich auch die durchaus attraktive aber eigentlich schon vergebene Hope, die denn auch gleich zum klassischen verhinderten „love interest“ wird.

Die Serie war mir zwar durchaus sympathisch, ist aber wie BTY allenfalls Durchschnittware, die man sich „mal angucken kann“.

Letztlich verbleibt aber WTTC auch wegen dieser mangelnden Qualität nicht mehr als eine Fußnote in der Geschichte der gescheiterten Serie, wurde sie doch nach 5 Episoden (von ohnehin nur 6 vorab von CBS georderten) schon wieder aus dem Programm gekickt.

Lediglich um die bezaubernde Joanna Garcia ist es etwas schade – aber vielleicht wird man sie woanders mal wieder sehen.

Keine Bewertung für Season 1, da nur 5 Episoden ausgestrahlt wurden

Non so cosa ne pensiate voi, ma io credo che alcune delle serie cancellate erano carine e ben strutturate…Ad esempio Aliens in America, October Road e non mi dispiacevano neanche Moonlight e Journeyman…

Speriamo che i network quest’anno producano delle serie altrettanto valide.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: Beauty Is Only Spanx Deep

Nem mesmo o retorno às telinhas do excelente ator Jeffrey Tambor conseguiu arrancar um mero sorriso do meu rosto, outrora tão corado de felicidade ao ver cenas inspiradas em séries como Arrested Development. O programa não trás absolutamente nada de novo e ainda consegue não ter ninguém com um mínimo de noção do que está fazendo em seu elenco, fazendo até Zorra Total parecer levemente engraçado.

Tá bom, eu peguei um pouco pesado na parte do Zorra Total, mas fala sério, existe alguém que gostou do piloto?!

Imagine Hank Moody (Californication), em uma versão mais felizinha e sem alcóol, tendo, como amigo, o Didi (os Trapalhões) – tá bom, o cara não é tão ridículo, mas o tipo de piada é o mesmo -, morando na casa da mãe Joana (que na série deve atender pelo nome de Charlene) onde o porteiro fala mais que pobre na chuva e se chama Jesus. Então, esse cara é o personagem principal. Pegou o clima?

Fran Kranz (sem foto no IMDB) faz o persongem principal Josh Flum, um escritor e/ou diretor de um filme só, que parece estar com algum tipo de bloqueio. Por causa disso, seu melhor amigo, Marty, que é tão engraçado quanto o Sérgio Malandro na década de 90, o convida pra ir morar no mesmo prédio que ele, o grande “The Captain”.

E é lá que conhecemos o restante do elenco principal, que conta com duas gatas, que devem disputar por ele no meio da série (assim que uma delas terminar um namoro à distância com um cara qualquer), uma coroa que já foi famosa na década de setenta e que já usou de “favores” sexuais pra tentar arrumar algum tipo de trabalho com o escritor, o porteiro Jesus e o, aparentemente, aposentado que fica fuxicando o dia todo sobre a vida dos vizinhos.

Piadas previsíveis, relacionamentos previsíveis, falas previsíveis, enfim… Nessa época de vacas magras eu estava me apegando a tudo, mas seria um grande absurdo, depois de tudo que eu falei, até mesmo pensar em dar uma segunda chance ao programa. Pra mim já está cancelado no piloto!

Uhja, mal wieder nach langer Zeit was Neues. Ein Serienpilot – fein, fein.

In der 20-minütigen Comedy auf CBS, die in L.A. spielt, geht um Josh, einem “Ausnahmetalent” in den Mittzwanzigern. Er hat für einen von ihm geschriebenen Film einen Oscar gewonnen, nur ist das leider schon 5 Jahre her. Da er sich momentan dadurcheher in einem Tief bewegt – sitzt seit 5 Jahren an einem Screenplay, Freundin hat sich von ihm getrennt – will er was ändern und plant nach New York zu ziehen. Sein bester Kumpel Marty (insofern ich das richtig verstanden hab, ist er Steuerberater für Reiche) überredet ihn jedoch in das von ihm bewohnte Appartmentkompley ‘El Capitan’ zu ziehen.
Kaum da eingezogen überschlagen sich schon die Ereignisse. Er verliebt sich in eine junge Akupunkteuse (?), hat ein Techtelmechtel mit einer der Hausbewohnerin (Charlene), was sich sehr schnell rumspricht – dank gebührt dem Hotelburschen “Jesus”, spielt mit Uncle Saul – dem Bewohner, der dort schon am längsten wohnt – Golf und gegen Ende der Folge muss auch noch sein Freund Marty mit Josh in sein Zimmer ziehen, da seine Freundin ihn rausgeschmissen hat.

Also angeguckt habe ich es mir, da Josh ja Autor ist, daher sollte man dadurch einen Einblick in die Welt eines Autors bekommen. Zugegebenermaßen waren da nun keine Brüller dabei, die das nun als Comedy unterzeichnen würden. Schade, aber mal schaun was die Serie so noch bringt. Ich bin ja geduldig.

Yes, the writers strike is still dragging on (although I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that we may be nearing the end), but that doesn’t mean we’re completely bereft of new scripted television. In addition to the upcoming returns of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Feb. 4), Jericho (Feb. 12), Family Guy (Feb. 17), Back to You (Feb. 26), Men and Trees (Feb. 27), and Reaper (Feb. 28), we’ve got a few new shows premiering this month as well.

This time How I Met Your Mother scribes DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler have given us 24’s Kim Raver as the editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine, Brooke Shields as a movie exec struggling to balance career and family, and Lindsay Price (last seen guest starring in HIMYM’s excellent “Spoiler Alert” episode as the annoyingly chatty Cathy) as a free-spirited designer looking for Mr. Right. I feel a little ill just typing all that, but hey, it can’t be worse than Cashmere Mafia, right? Please?

QUARTERLIFE (NBC)
Premieres: Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 10:00 PM
Time slot: Sundays at 9:00 PM EST
Description: This internet series from Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick (the creative team behind My So-Called Life and thirtysomething) originally started as an experiment in programming free of corporate ownership and creative interference–and was promptly snapped up by strike-strapped NBC. The series, which has been running in eight-minute chunks on MySpace and the quarterlife web site, tells the ongoing stories of six people between the ages of 20 and 30 (it’s during this “quarterlife,” the series maintains, that many of life’s most important decisions are made), through the blog of the lead character, a would-be writer played by Bitsie Tulloch (of the internet serial phenomenon lonelygirl15). Whether a story designed to be told in eight-minute chunks will play well in an hour-long time slot remains to be seen, but I’m always inclined to give Herskovitz and Zwick the benefit of the doubt.

Como eu disse a alguns posts atrás “Ano novo, séries novas”. Já iremos começar o ano com algumas estréias, a midseason americana está prometendo algumas surpresas boas, e na minha opinião alguns dos primeiros micos televisivos de 2008.

CASHMERE MAFIA
Estréia 06/01/08 – ABC

A história de quatro ambiciosas e belas mulheres que são amigas desde a escola e tentam equilibrar as exigências de suas glamurosas carreiras com a vida e família na cidade de Nova York. É, qualquer coincidência com “Sex and the City” não é o mero acaso, de Darren Star, um produtor de “Sex and the City”, Cashmere Mafia promete ser um revival da série que marcou época, espero que eles inovem, ou pelo menos tentem.

THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES
Estréia 13/01/08 – FOX

Talvez das séries que irão estrear essa seja a mais conhecida, isso talvez seja devido ao piloto ter vazado, a versão feminina do EXTREMINADOR DO FUTURO, abordara a trajetória de Sarah e seu filho John Connor, aqueles do TERMINATOR 2. A maioria das pessoas que assistiram o piloto que vazou, gostaram da série, eu não assisti ainda. Estou com uma pequena vontade de ver.

BREAKING BAD
Estréia 20/01/08 – AMC

Na minha humilde opinião essa série vai ser o King Kong da midseason, para mim ela soa como um WEEDS mal formulado, é, nem assisti, mas, já não fui com a cara. A série conta à história de um professor de química, chamado, Walter White, que recebe a notícia de que está em uma faze terminal, e após isso ele pira, começa usar suas habilidade em química para fabricar drogas e garantir o futuro de sua família.

IN TREATMENT
Estréia 28/01/08 – HBO

Um drama que mostra a vida de um terapeuta e seus pacientes, cada episódio ira contar a historia de uma paciente, e intuito da série é mostrar como esse terapeuta sabe lidar com os problemas de seus pacientes, mas como os dele tudo muda de figura. Serão 45 episódios, 5 por semana, cada episódio de meia-hora.

Nessa série, sim, eu aposto. Dos elogiados criadores de “Brothers & Sisters” e “Dirty Sexy Money”. A série mostra o dia-a-dia de um advogado que achava ter tudo, e tinha, mas de repente ele começa a ter visões, e começa a achar que é um profeta. Essa “dramedia” tem um elenco bem conhecido, aparentemente um bom roteiro e uma emissora grande que irá exibir. Não duvido do seu sucesso.

Aparentemente uma comédia ao estilo “Friends”, isso porque a série irá passar em um prédio e vai ser ai que tudo irá acontecer. Josh um cineasta fracassado resolve voltar para Nova York, recebe o convite de um amigo, Marty, para ele, Josh vá morar no mesmo prédio que ele mora, e é aí que toda a história começa. Não aposto muito, mas, enfim….
