Hi again everyone, Your wide eyed cyclist again here. As you know would know from reading Carbonize my Ride!!! that I’ve started a project to basically, well, carbonize my ride. I’m essentially putting my previously damaged (by CY) carbon Trek frame on my Merida bike. Then again, maybe it’s considered transferring my Merida’s components over to my carbon frame. Either way, I’ll end up with a sweet assed carbon bike, and a Merida alu frame with carbon forks to sell!!

Got a couple of things done to my bikes since the last post. Most notably, I’ve managed to straighten the bent dropout (considered impossible by a reputable bike shop in the Jurong area. God knows why…) AND I’ve fused the crack with an aluminium weld. Nice workmanship on the dropout by my welder I must say, considering the proximity of the crack to the derailleur mounting threads. Total job cost me coffee $$ of 10 bucks. Good deal considering that some mechanic told me that it was impossible to bend the dropout and save the frame. Here are some pics of the finished job.

I must admit that it’s not exactly elegant, but it serves its purpose, while preserving your piggy bank, and seriously, who actually looks behind and under your rear derailleur? (If you want the contact of the aluminium worker/company, drop me a comment/message with your contact info) So now that the carbon frame has been fixed, I’ve gone shopping at bike shops for the cost of transferring components and parts from 1 bike to another. So here’s a mini report on prices in the Katong region and slightly beyond… JOFI (Roxy square) $60 for swap. $40 for tune up with new cables. Hong Soon Seng (Joo Chiat Rd) $60 for swap and tune up. $32 for 4 new cables. Rodalink (East side) $55 for swap and tune up. $32+ for 4 new cables. T3 (Siglap rd) $80 for swap and tune up. Looks like I’ll be sending the bike in to a bike shop soon enough, so stay tuned for the before/after pictures!!

We have had quite a few requests to provide décor ideas to hide unsightly air conditioning units in gardens. Badec Bros Deco specializes in feature walls, such as gabion feature walls. The creative team at Badec Bros Deco was recently commissioned to manufacture a stainless steel, cascading water feature for a client. Firstly, we created seven Cubedec B pots – troughs – in varying dimensions from grade 304 stainless steel.

The stainless steel sheets were folded and welded together along a single seam line, to create a flawless overall appearance. Once all of the troughs were manufactured, we installed the water feature on site, with the lowest trough being filled with black pebbles.

There are mainly two textures to choose from for the mesh.  The most common type of mesh consists of round wire mesh and has square patterns.  Alternatively we use a grid-like mesh, which consists 10mm-thick steel and has diamond patterns.

The imaginative experts at Badec Bros Deco recently manufactured Cubedec gabion bollards for a client.

A bollard is a sturdy, squat pillar or post, used to demarcate areas or to restrict access to certain areas. Normally quite a few bollards are placed in a line to get this effect.

We manufacture our gabion bollards from 30mm x 3mm angle iron, which is welded together to ensure a strong frame. Then we weld strong, steel mesh onto the frame to create the shape of the bollard. Once the hollow bollard structure has been manufactured, we install it on site and fill it with either pebbles or chunky sandstone gravel.

The creative team of décor specialists at Badec Bros Deco designed and created these bollards in such a decorative manner that they can be used as planters as well.

Our sister company, Badec Bros Wooden Decking installed the wooden decking, in which some of the bollards were permanently positioned.

“The Evolution of Flora” is a kinetic steel-fabricated sculpture, and was installed at the Performance Arts Center in downtown Colorado Springs on 6/25 as part of their yearlong 2009 11th Annual Art on the Streets Exhibition and Competition. It was my 1st year participating in the event, which boasted its largest number of entries and the highest caliber of artwork from Artist across the country and abroad. “The Evolution of Flora” won the $5k  3rd place prize, and was the only out of state artwork to place. Auto Pharaoh Investments contacted the creative experts at Badec Bros Deco to design and manufacture trendy steel décor products with laser-cut signage to smarten up the showroom of their motor dealership in Johannesburg.  The brief to our team was that they wanted something exclusive and customized, which would stylishly bear the company trademark. 

Badec Bros Deco took photographs of the area to assist with the creative process and calculated a detailed quotation to present to Pharaoh Auto Investments.  This was done free of charge.  We only expect payment in the form of a 50% deposit, once the client is completely satisfied with the design and accepts the quotation.

Customized Mild Steel Dustbin with laser-cut Logo

Badec Bros Deco designed and manufactured spectacularly beautiful dustbins, which were powder coated in white, with black powder coated tops and stainless steel dustbin flaps.  The company logo was craftily laser-cut into the body of the dustbin.

Furthermore, Badec Bros Deco manufactured 6 Cubedec A décor pots measuring 400×400x400mm and powder coated them with white SABS approved powder coating.  These stunning pots were placed on custom-built concrete podiums (ranging in height to level the pots on the sloping paving) and planted with golden barrel cacti (echinocactus grusonii), also known as mother-in-law’s cushions.

Finally, Badec Bros Deco manufactured 6 Cubedec A décor pots measuring 500×500x800mm and powder coated them with SABS approved powder coating.  One pot was powder coated in white; the next two were powder coated in silver and had laser-cut blocks (resembling the company logo) welded onto the body of the pots; the next two pots were powder coated in black and the last pot was powder coated in red.  The laser-cut blocks on the silver pots and the colours of these stunning pots perfectly complement the company logo and colours.  They were placed on custom-built concrete podiums (ranging in height to level the pots on the sloping paving) and planted with sleek tree aloes (aloe bainesii).

There are two kind of pipe based on how they’re manufactured. First type is called seam or welded pipe. The other is seamless pipe. Seam pipe is manufactured using a rolled flat steel plate, which is welded in the inside surface of the pipe. The welding method can be longitudinal or spiral. This type of pipe ussually applicable in low pressure operation only.

The other type is seamless pipe, which is manufactured from hot solid steel round bar, then extruded to meet with the specified length. This extruding causing a hollow in the inside of the solid round bar.

For both of type, of course there are final maintainance, such as quenching, tempering, etc.

Just six miles off Old Route 66 in Essex, Illinois, is the garage of Jack Barker, and his hundreds of welded sculptures.  This energetic and fun-loving 75-year old is one big kid.  He is having a great time bending, hammering and welding found materials into fanciful  people, animals and characters.  He happily pointed out to me that a number of the pieces are “kinetic…some art person told me that is what you call sculptures with moving parts.”  And the movements are pretty amazing, turning at different speeds, interacting with each other.

Watching him work in his shop, excitedly talking about how to get colors to pop out of the metal (heat and timing) makes you want to pick up the welding torch yourself.  But be sure to keep an eye on the flame, as when Jack gets to creating, he doesn’t always remember where it is pointed.
