If you’re like me, holiday shopping is creeping up to the top of your to-do list and you’re in the market for some winning gift ideas. While I’m practical in nature, I can’t help but love giving gifts that are luxurious and indulgent- which is where beauty comes in! 2009 has been a year of practical, economical choices so there’s no better reason to spoil the people on your list with some of the best products out there. You can legitimize it all with the knowledge that you are turning loved ones on to healthy beauty choices! And really, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t appreciate a little natural pampering. Here are a few top picks for luxe holiday beauty gifts (note that luxe does not equal expensive!). Choose one to top off a present or stuff a stocking; assemble a few in a pretty basket for a show-stopping gift…

Body Oil: From the exotically-scented Patyka Rosewood Body Oil to the classic Weleda Lavender Relaxing Body Oil, you’ll find few products that pack a more pampering punch. Many people haven’t tried body oil, so show them what they’re missing. They’ll love your thoughtfulness- especially during the cold, dry winter months!

Fragrance: Natural and organic scents are on the up and up. We obsessively love Acorelle and all of the gorgeous solid scents from Soap & Paper Factory (verbena, geranium, gardenia…). We challenge you to avoid buying one for yourself as well- it can’t be done!

Shave Cream: That’s right- this is the rich cream that you rub on in the shower, not the foam-from-a-can. A favorite new brand is Ec-Oooh-Chic, whose Organic Shea Butter and White Tea Shave Cream is a soothing, buttery blend of shea, aloe, sweet almond and green & white tea. Bye-bye bumps, hello soft skin. (Note: this one works for ladylike legs as well as manly faces! Be sure to share.)

Sets: If you’re gifting someone who hasn’t has the opportunity to experience natural beauty products, take this time to show them the best of the best. This mini bath & body set from REN includes two body washes and two body creams that everyone should try, and this Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Care kit is just the thing to keep regular travelers looking rested and balanced (plus you get free shipping on Weleda holiday gifts until Dec 24th!). And the best part? These sets are a great value- you definitely get more beauty to share for a low cost. Writer :: Jolene Hart

If you have dry winter skin like I do, Weleda’s Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil is a little

If you have dry winter skin like I do, Weleda’s Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil is a little miracle in a bottle.

Weleda was tickled with my kids rave review of their Calendula Cream Bath. So they asked if I would be interested in doing a product giveaway from their new Pomegranate Regenerating line. They sent along a bottle of their Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil for me to try, and it could not have arrived at a better time.

The skin on my legs were such a flakey mess that I couldn’t even wax them properly. After one use, the skin flakes disappeared, even 24 hours without reapplying. The oil absorbed quickly, and did not leave a greasy film (my least favorite side effect of a body oil). The scent is light and lemon grassy, which I really loved. Although, sadly, the beautiful smell disappeared after a few hours (or I sniffed it right off my arm).

Punicic acid, found in pomegranate seed oil, is the real workhorse of the antioxidants. This omega 5 oil has been proven in clinical studies to be an anticancer agent, hence the recent push to injest more pomegranate. In the skin, a 2006 study from the University of Michigan Medical School, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, showed that punicic acid promoted the regeneration of the epidermis.

I was so impressed with the results that I tried it on the kid. Being Weleda, I knew it would be gentle enough for her skin, and that we wouldn’t need to decontaminate her from an over abundance of chemicals after. And that’s where Weleda really won me over. As I blogged here last week, my kid has keratosis pilaris and I have not been able to find anything to tame her KP. After using the Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil on her for a few days, I noticed a reduction in the chicken bumps on her arms.

I inquired with Weleda about this, and they had not heard of the Pomegranate line helping with KP, although I am pretty certain that the punicic acid is breaking down the hardened keratin in the clogged follicles while the super moisturizing oils like jojoba are keeping the skin soft and limber. I want to point out that Weleda does not make any claims that the product banishes KP, but was my experience using the oil.

So this is, hands down, the best body moisturizer I have ever used. It’s a fantastic foil for winter ravaged skin, and I am really excited to offer this as the first Beautyology giveaway!

Leave a comment below this post to enter. The names will be entered in Random.org to pick the winner. You have until Wednesday, December 16 to enter! Good luck!

FCC disclosure: Weleda sent me a full size product to try, and are providing the winner with a full size bottle of the oil.

For stocking stuffers, one idea is to stock up on some supplies — that way there are plenty of gifts to open, and practical needs are fulfilled:

for children, stockings can be stuffed with crayons, pencils, paper, paints — things you find your self buying throughout the year and that are fun and always good to have around. Additional practical gifts: stainless steel water bottle, winter hat (maybe homemade), little snack containers (put a few treats inside for the occasion). Gifts from nature: a small crystal, a carved stick, a pressed leaf, a plant, some seeds. And of course, some small toys — a wooden top, marbles, a deck of cards, a little game, a book, and a chocolate Santa or two (if you and they indulge in that kind of thing on special days — a note about sugar: We avoid it for the most part, but it isn’t forbidden — it is a treat for special days).

For adults: toiletries of all kinds — shampoo, nice soap, shaving cream, a special lotion — I’m partial to Weleda, Dr. Hauschka, Jurlique (among others), office supplies — paper clips, stapler, printer paper, printer, stamps, ink cartridges, batteries, a flashlight, candles, chocolate (for me), coffee, tea, a local honey, a book, a bottle of wine.

Just for fun (and Time Labs Blog is fun), check out this graph from Time Labs Blog about the “Most Valuable Objects, by Weight.”

And for adding lumps to the stockings of children and adults alike, I sometimes throw in some tangerines or clementines and apples and some nuts (and nutcrackers).

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but as the holiday season ramps up, so does holiday stress

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but as the holiday season ramps up, so does holiday stress. Here are some ways to help you feel merry this year.

Give yourself a little something. There are tons of sales out there; treat yourself to something you’ve been eyeing instead of putting it on your wish list—and don’t let yourself feel guilty. Holiday shopping is much easier when your mood is merry, too.

Put yourself in time out. This might be our favorite tip, especially if it involves a nice, hot bath and a few chapters of a good book. For extra relaxation and stress relief, try adding soothing oil to your bathwater: we are year-round fans of Dr. Hauschka’s Lavender Bath (its lavender essential oil is great for calming nerves, anxiety, and stress), we love the combination of lavender, chamomile and bergamot in Rain Africa’s Essential Oil Relax, and Weleda’s Pine Reviving Bath Milk is soothing and puts you in the holiday spirit with the scent of Silver Fir.

Get off your feet. If you need some help in the relaxation department, head for the experts. Book a facial, massage, or manicure—something to help you feel pampered and calmed. Go ahead, you have our permission!

Let the early bird get the worm. Don’t wear yourself out trying to make every holiday party, every great sale at the mall, and keep up your already hectic schedule. Instead, look at your appointment book with an editor’s eye, and choose the events and activities that are most meaningful. Make apologies for the rest, and get some extra shut-eye—a well-rested body is better able to cope with the added stress of the holidays.

Take advantage of online shopping. If the thought of battling holiday crowds at the mall makes you cringe, don’t do it. You can find great deals online, and you don’t have to spend half an hour searching for a parking spot. (We’ve even made it easier for you: Starting today for a limited time, get free shipping site-wide at Beautorium when you spend at least $50—just enter the code “ship4free” at checkout!

Happy Holidays!

I’m being asked more and more to review products and books. I guess due to the emphasis of thi

I’m being asked more and more to review products and books. I guess due to the emphasis of this blog on topics like frugal living, sustainability, anti-The Brands, organic products and so on. I should point out that any product review I do involves two things: not being paid for it and putting the product through its paces. The review I do will be an honest assessment.

So….I was contacted by a Sydney-based PR company who asked if I’d heard of Weleda products and if I’d like to receive some samples to try and perhaps do a review. I received a generous selection of products and put them through what I consider a pretty gruelling test. More about the test later.

But first – you can check out the Weleda website here in Australia and here internationally. I have seen Weleda products in various health food stores over the years but never tried them. So I checked them out and can tell you that they produce organic skin & body care and what’s really interesting is that the finest ingredients are sourced from specially selected biodynamic and organic farms and gardens. There’s no nasty chemicals, colourings, synthetics – the natural ingredients are often wild-harvested (meaning that the plants have grown in the wild) and have been picked in a sustainable way.

The company’s heritage was a surprise – going back to 1921, Dr Rudolph Steiner and the movement known as anthroposophy. I know a bit about anthroposophy because my mother was a bit of a health nut who followed the teaching of Gaylord Hauser. Anthroposophy is about seeing the body, mind and spirit as linked to the world and part of a holistic system. So Steiner, along with Dr. Ita Wegman, developed Weleda products using natural ingredients that holistically work with and support the body’s healing tendencies. “Weleda” is the Celtic goddess of wisdom and healing, so they chose a pretty apt name.

Anyway, I was sent some products from the Almond range for sensitive skin, toothpaste and some smaller sample products. Here’s what I received:

Almond Cleansing Lotion

Almond Moisture Cream

Skin food

Sea Buckthorn Oil

Sea Buckthorn Creamy Body Wash

Plant Gel Toothpaste

Ratanhia Mouthwash Concentrate

Pomegranate Hand Cream

and finally, a pretty little bag full of small samples.

Now to the test. I have the world’s weirdest skin. Being of mixed Welsh and Russian origin, I have VERY fair skin that is prone to going berserk over the slightest thing. Heat and wind in the face can send it bright red. I simply cannot (and will not) tan, so any slight skin imperfection is front and centre. I also travel a fair bit and constantly find products leaking all over the place.

So I need a skin care product that is super gentle and for sensitive skin. And preferably products in tubes that don’t leak and take up too much space in my toiletry travel bag. Since giving up The Brands, I have been using organic skin care, my favourite being Avalon Organics’ Vitamin C range. I’ve been sticking to this for well over a year now. And I prefer natural ingredients.

The Weleda products arrived just in time to take on the road to Taiwan. What a test!! The products would be stuffed into a toiletry bag, thrown around in a suitcase and tested on my skin for over a week, in a country with different climatic conditions (always a hassle for my skin). So I took all the products and here’s my review:

the Almond cleansing lotion and moisture cream. The Almond range is for sensitive and reactive skin – hello!! The cleanser is creamy, fragrance free and is packed with sweet almond oil that helps nourish and soothe sensitive skin. Frankly, I expected the cleanser would not be not very effective at taking off my make-up or might leave my skin feeling tight but…nope. It was a pleasure to use and very little was needed to swipe off the make-up. As I also have skin that tends to be oily, the moisture cream was surprisingly light and didn’t leave me looking like an oil pit. Both these products I found to be extremely soothing on my skin, which often feels hot. So far so good!

the toothpaste I looked at with trepidation. I am used to the Colgates or whatever you get from the supermarket. The gel toothpaste is made from plants. Frankly, I thought it wouldn’t be very effective. After a week of using this toothpaste, I wouldn’t buy anything else. LOVE it. I have sensitive gums too and often find a toothpaste stings or is too full of mint or some other strong taste. This toothpaste is made from organic chamomile flower extract, along with myrrh and organic ratanhia (with mild disinfectant and astringent properties). The mouthwash was similar. Both are excellent products. It took me probably 3 or 4 days to get used to the toothpaste as it’s quite a different texture in the mouth.

After hours and hours of flying to Taiwan and back (and recent trips to New Zealand), I found Skin Food a wonderful problem solver for the rough and dry nasty bits. Skin Food is an intensively nourishing, hydrating cream made from organic pansy. I smacked it on the elbows, heels of the feet and any other bits that were a tad dry. I believe this is known as the “hero product” of the Weleda range and has been around since 1926.

The Sea Buckthorn Creamy Body Wash is super creamy, with a subtle, delightful smell of orange sea buckthorn berries. The Sea Buckthorn Body Oil I used alternately with the Skin Food for the rough bits. I was very happy that these two products didn’t have some awful fake smell (like so many of the vanilla-scented products around these days).

Pomegranate Hand Cream: I often forget about the hands, so after a week of using this hand cream, I reckon my hands are looking smoother. Organic pomegranate seed oil is naturally rich in antioxidants so this hand cream is going to help protect the hands from free radical damage.

I’ve been using the Weleda products for nearly two weeks now and can truly tell you that my skin has not done its usual thing – feeling hot, going red, breaking out as often, looking dull and so on. It’s calmer and more soothed. None of the products leaked in my suitcase. Most of them come in handy tubes that can get squished and thrown around without any leakage dramas. Obviously, Weleda puts thought into a product’s ingredients rather than giving you some fancy looking jar. The size of the products is good too for travel bags.

I guess the best thing I can say is that I will now be switching from Avalon Organics and going with Weleda products from now on. That’s how good I think the products are. I know that my fav health store doesn’t stock Weleda, so thank goodness I can purchase online. Thx to Katja at the PR company for asking me to test Weleda!

Efteråt visade mig Emma vilka produkter hon använt under behandlingen.

Greenland moisturising body scrub, 250 ml, 139 kronor.

Comfort Zone Sacred Nature face body delicate scrub, 200 ml, 395 kronor.

Weleda Birch Body Scrub, 150 ml, 129 kronor. Piggar upp.

Calendula possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial anti-fungal and anti-spasmodic properties. Cal

Calendula possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial anti-fungal and anti-spasmodic properties.
Calendula has a wide variety of uses including:
Aids in the quick repair of damaged skin and rapid wound healing
Helps to minimise the effects of aging
Is on of the best herbs for treating burns, cuts and abrasions because of its anti-septic qualities
Helps to seal small blood vessels thereby stemming bleeding and preventing bruising
The anti-fungal properties make it effective in treating athlete’s foot, ringworm and candida
It reduces the fluid inside blisters

Effective in the treatment of acne, nappy rash and sore nipples in nursing mothers
Calendula will also minimise inflammation and the risk of secondary infection in chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It will aid in the repair of the skin damaged from repeated breakdown due to these conditions and help to keep scarring at a minimum.

As always precaution recommends, there is always a risk that allergy or other reaction might occur.

For my skin Calendula works well. It really give relief to itching eczema and other rashes. It soften and calms the skin. For me it is so hard to find a product that will be total free of any type of irritation how mild they might be.
Not even the product that are fragrance free are totally safe. So I try all kind of product in hope that I might find some that will measure up to my expectations and need. Most of the time they only reach halfway.

I first tested the Calendula balm from Essential Care which is divine!
Suitable for Vegetarians.
Ingredients: coconut oil*, extra virgin olive oil*, shea butter*, beeswax*, calendula extract*, orange essential oil*, chamomile essential oil*, limonene (from the orange oil)
*Organically grown/produced (100% of product)
Product is Soil Association Certified.

Badger Balm Baby Balm w Calendula and Chamomile also divine!
Ingredients: *Extra Virgin Olive Oil, *Golden Yellow Beeswax, *Castor Oil, *Calendula Extract and Essential Oil of *Roman Chamomile.
* = Certified Organic

Now testing Weleda Baby Calendula Shampoo/Bodywash. Really creamy formula that soothes your body when applying it to your wet skin. Leaves skin smooth even after you towel dried. Smelling so mild and fresh. Really calms the skin as well.
Ingredients:
INCI: Water (Aqua), Coco-Glucoside, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Alcohol, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Xanthan Gum, Lactic Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*. *from natural essential oils

Weleda brand for Calendula include many products but some of them has lanolin, which is a common ingredient but I do have a tendency to react to that so I prefer to use product without lanolin. Though there still are some products that are free of Lanolin like their lotion, creme bath and massage oil. I am aiming for the lotion and massage oil next time around.

Lately I have noticed that my usual facial basis sensitiv cleansing gel from Lavera is leaving my skin dry and tight, could have to do with the change of season. So I tried using the Weleda Baby Calendula Shampoo/bodywash on my face. It is so rich in its formula and perfect even to use on your face. Leaving skin smooth and no negative reaction.

I really enjoy Weleda products in general and I think they are one of the best natural companies out there today. Their products are all very natural, very high quality and well-balanced. However, I can’t say that I’m thrilled with their deodorant, specifically their spray-on Citrus Deodorant. I found that the scent was not particularly great and it did not last very long at all. Thinking back to when I worked in the retail end of natural beauty products, I’m pretty sure that wild rose was the most popular scent choice so maybe I chose the wrong scent. Weleda’s deodorant is a typical size of 3.4 fl oz with a less typical deodorant price of about $11.00. Maybe if it was $3.00 or $4.00 per bottle I would be less disappointed with this natural choice. Unfortunately, I just did not think it worked well enough or smelled nice enough to be worth the cost!

My daughter inherited my sensitive skin–it nicely welts right up when she comes in contact wit

My daughter inherited my sensitive skin–it nicely welts right up when she comes in contact with something too irritating. And, of course, being an esthetician and skin care freak, I have tried every baby and kid product imaginable since she was an infant. My only criteria was that the product be haz-mat free.

When organic-minded new moms gave a thumbs up to California Baby, I gave that a whirl, but I found the products kind of drying (particularly their hair care). So when I stumbled on Weleda at an organic esthetician’s skin studio while we were on a long beach weekend, I picked up a bottle of their Calendula Cream Bath for my kid.

As a sensitive skinner myself, I have always been partial to Calendula. It’s anti inflammatory and incredibly gentle and healing. The base of Weleda’s Calendula Bath Cream is sweet almond oil, which is easily absorbed and very moisturizing. It protects the skin barrier and keeps the skin super smooth.

Weleda is an organic brand that has almost invincible staying-power. Eighty years ago, they pioneered the concept of Biodynamic farming, which is only now being used as trendy organic buzz words in the beauty biz today. The company was founded on the principle that the products support and enhance the body’s own natural healing tendencies.

Since my kid’s the one using it, I asked her to provide her review of the product during bath time tonight:

I like it. It makes me smell pretty and I love how it feels really soft. My skin feels nice and soft after. If I don’t use it the night before, the next day my skin feels all wrinkley. But when I do use it… Not wrinkley!

And isn’t that what we all want from our skin care products?

I know it’s a terrible pun, but it’s quite intended—Willy Street Co-op is simply brimming with beauty products! Having recently become a member, I felt compelled to spread the good word after my recent visit. They have two aisles packed with natural and organic cosmetics as well as bath and body products to satisfy your every need.

The co-op boasts a range of products, from the well-known brands such as Burt’s Bees to more under-the-radar brands like Kiss My Face, Weleda, Jason, Ecco Bella and evanhealy and more. And (as if this could get any more exciting) a great deal of the products have tests bottles out, allowing you to give it a try before you buy.

What more could a girl want? Perhaps a little chocolate…and lucky for us, that’s just an aisle away!

Recently I started a new job and it’s kinda sort of killing me lol. The job is great but my new boss is opposite of my old one, she prefers everyone to be in EARLY. For anyone that knows me I am not a morning person, I REPEAT I am not a morning person. So I feel like it’s a struggle to get up. I’m trying to perfect a simple beauty routine so that I can be out the house at 6:50 and still look kinda cute.

Teeth. Gotta Have a great smile. My new favorite toothpaste is Weleda Salt Toothpaste. It sounds like it would be horrible but it’s a refreshing toothpaste and I feel like it gets my teeth cleaner then most “regular” toothpastes I’ve used. Actually I don’t know a toothpaste that has ever made my mouth feel so clean.

Face: I keep trying all these expensive products and in the end simple is what keeps my face clean. I’m

back on something I used when I was 13, Neutrogena original formula facial cleaning bar. I hate bar soaps but this is great for my skin so I use it. Then I follow up with Aubrey Organics Rosa Mosqueta moisturizing

cream. It’s thick, creamy, smells good and a little goes a long way.

Makeup: The work face is REAL simple. Mascara, lipgloss and blush. My new favorite mascara is rimmel glameyes lash flirt mascara. It’s relatively cheap- it can be found at most pharmacys and box stores- and it almost makes my lashes look like falsies. For my lips I use chai by MAC which is a great nude and can take a drab face to looking fabulous. On my cheeks I use sweet as cocoa by MAC, it’s described as “chocolate brown with gold pearl” and it gives you just enough “glow.” That even if you feel horrible you can look great.

By sticking to the basics. I can do all of this in under 15 minutes and not look how I feel in the morning

What is your routine?
