Morto Wess, in coppia con Dori Ghezzi conquistò la musica leggera italiana

Era il bassista di Rocky Roberts, diventò famoso come interprete. Il ricordo ella cantante: «Lui era l’artrista, io la corista. La nostra coppia “caffelatte” era unica»

ROMA - La fama l’aveva conquistata con il nome di Wess. E anche se l’epoca dei successi è lontana, non fu una notorietà da poco: in coppia con Dori Ghezzi aveva formato un duo singolare e di efficate impatto sul pubblico. Wesley Johnson, in arte semplicemente Wess, morto scomparso nella notte fra lunedì e martedì, era un cantante e musicista statunitense naturalizzato italiano arrivato nel nostro Paese nei primi anni Sessanta. In quel periodo per i neri la musica amata era soprattotto il soul e il R&B dei grandi interpreti, da Otis Redding a Wilson Pickett.

GLI INIZI - Quel sound anche in Italia ispirava molti interpreti di musica leggera (basti pensare a Fausto Leali ma anche gruppi come I Ribelli) e anche in Italia si cercava qualche richiamo all’originale. Il Pickett italiano, fatte le debite proporzioni, era Rocky Roberts, quEllo di «Stasera mi butto». Wess è il suo bassista che poi nel 1967, incide al suo primo album come cantante solista, intitolato «The sound of soul». Ottiene un discreto successo nel 1968 con la canzone «I miei giorni felici». All’inizio degli anni Settanta comincia la collaborazione con Dori Ghezzi: nasce una delle coppie canore italiane più famose. Nel 1973, con il brano «Tu nella mia vita» partecipano al Festival di Sanremo, superando poi tutti nella classifica delle vendite.

UN SODALIZIO NATO PER CASO - «Da lui ho imparato il mestiere. Lui era l’artista – ricorda ora Dori Ghezzi – io la corista. Rammento quel periodo come uno dei più belli e divertenti del mio lavoro. In realtà avrei dovuto collaborare soltanto ad un brano del 33 giri a cui stava lavorando. Si chiamava “Voglio stare con te”. Era un esperimento che doveva finire lì. Invece alla Durium, la casa discografica, si resero conto che la coppia poteva ottenere altri risultati. E in effetti funzionò. Eravamo una cosa insolita: l’unica coppia caffelatte a livello internazionale. All’Eurofestival, per esempio, colpì molto». Dori Ghezzi è commossa nel ricordo: «Era una persona squisita. Un artista e un bassista forse neppure conscio delle sue grandi possibilità. Si è anche sacrificato per questo, si è consumato lavorando sul palcoscenico perché era uno di quegli artisti che dava tutto al pubblico». Oltre a «Voglio stare con te», anche «Noi due per sempre» e la famosissima «Un corpo e un’anima» (prima classificata a Canzonissima 1974) consolidano la popolarità e il successo del duo, che si piazza terzo all’Eurofestival secondo a Sanremo 1976 con «Come stai? Con chi sei?». Negli anni successivi, Wess ha partecipato a trasmissioni tv, produzione di dischi oltre a fare concerti. A Sanremo 1994 ha fatto parte del gruppo «Squadra Italia» e negli ultimi anni, tra il 2000 e il 2004 è tornato a esibirsi in molte piazze italiane, come nei prinmi anni della carriera, accompagnato dalla Wess Band.

Ha scritto canzoni come “Ti amo” e “Gloria”, come “Immensamente” e “Tu”. Ma anche “Stella stai” e “Gli altri siamo noi”. Pezzi che fanno parte della storia della musica italiana. Lui è ovviamente Umberto Tozzi, tra i cantautori più produttivi e più conosciuti al mondo grazie anche ai suoi quasi 50 milioni di dischi venduti. Lunedì sera sarà in concerto al Teatro Nuovo dove ripercorrerà una carriera nata proprio a Milano verso la metà degli anni ’70. Un 2009 che ha riportato alla ribalta il musicista torinese tra l’album “Non solo live”, il libro autobiografico “Non solo io” e appunto il tour. «Effettivamente si sono “mescolate” tra di loro tutte queste, ma è stato solo un caso», spiega Tozzi.

Come è nata l’idea di “Non solo live”?

Inizialmente volevo dare vita a un cd di soli inediti, poi strada facendo mi è venuta voglia di registrare un live che avesse suoni diversi rispetto a “Royal Albert Hall” del 1988: erano 20 anni che non proponevo un disco dal vivo.

Altra novità, il libro…

Una coincidenza anche perché quando ho iniziato a prendere appunti sulla mia vita da musicista non pensavo un giorno di pubblicarli. Ci sono i miei ricordi, aneddoti simpatici e divertenti.

Lunedì il suo tour approda al Nuovo: come lo presenta?

Sono un uomo fortunato perché ho un repertorio molto conosciuto e dunque non mancheranno quei brani che mi hanno fatto voler bene dalla gente. E non mancheranno i cinque inediti di “Non solo live” e le cover “Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)” di Billy Joel (nel tondino) e “Petite Marie” di Francis Cabrel contenute nel disco. Il concerto è sicuramente gustoso per chi ama la mia musica, si sente cantare il pubblico dall’inizio alla fine. Una cosa molto gratificante per me.

Ma la scaletta ruota intorno a “Non solo live”?

Sì e no. Ho inserito pezzi del passato che raramente ho suonato dal vivo. Poi ci sono anche dei medley acustici. Diciamo che è uno show più fornito rispetto all’album.

Il tour arriva a Milano rodato: il punto di forza?

Le canzoni di ieri che si ascoltano oggi ancora volentieri. E il pubblico che è il vero protagonista di tutto. È come trovarsi a una serata tra amici.

Curiosità: nell’album c’è “Un corpo e un’anima” scritta da lei e portata al successo da Wess e Dori Ghezzi che vinsero nel ’74 “Canzonissima”…

È stata la prima canzone che ho composto e che mi ha permesso di farmi conoscere come autore nel giro editoriale di Milano. L’ho riscoperta tre anni fa quando è stata “rispolverata” per una pubblicità: devo dire che è molto conosciuta.

Sono passati 33 anni dal suo album d’esordio e ha venduto quasi 50 milioni di dischi: il suo segreto?

Non lo so. Sono un musicista che canta e suona quello che scrive. Ho avuto la fortuna di “fare” questo mestiere anche se non tutto gira sempre per il verso giusto. Ma sono un privilegiato, vivere di questo è una cosa bella, la musica mi permette di sognare. Inoltre “vivere” il movimento musicale degli anni ’70 e ’89 è stato qualcosa di indimenticabile e non più ripetibile. In quel periodo è nata una generazione di cantautori e artisti che ha scritto pagine bellissime del nostro Paese. E se oggi siamo qui a cantarle ancora è perché abbiamo un repertorio importante.

Chi non la conosce quale suo disco dovrebbe ascoltare?

Non so rispondere, dico solo che “Il grido” del 1996, che è stato un insuccesso, meritava molto di più perché è un’opera molto bella.

Oggi c’è la canzone che la rappresenta di più?

“Si può dare di più” ha in qualche modo segnato qualcosa di importante e il suo significato è attuale ancora oggi.

Baglioni cambia spesso gli arrangiamenti di “Questo piccolo grande amore” dicendo che si è stancato di riproporla sempre uguale: è così per lei anche per “Ti amo” che è probabilmente la sua canzone più famosa?

Secondo me i brani non vanno stravolti perché il pubblico li vuole ascoltare così come sono nati per emozionarsi sempre con lo stesso ascolto.

Oggi c’è qualche giovane cantautore che può avvicinarsi a lei?

Non sono un profeta, ma dico di no. Oggi i giovani hanno un altro tipo di approccio alla musica, devono sfondare subito, non hanno la “possibilità” di sbagliare uno o due album.

Tozzi e Milano?

C’ho vissuto negli anni ’70, bazzicavo negli ambienti musicali dell’epoca. È la città che ha dato la svolta alla mia carriera. Ho avuto la possibilità di suonare con grandi artisti, di conoscere un mito come Lucio Battisti. Ogni volta che ci torno mi emoziono sempre ricordando episodi incredibili che ho ricordato anche nel libro.
