If this week’s predictions prove correct, my beloved Blues will be above those wretched Reds in the table. Everton take on West Brom at home, whilst Kenny “I’m here all week” Dalglish’s confidence-drained side travel to Newcastle – a team with precisely the opposite experience just now.

Elsewhere, Manchester City have a real chance to turn up the pressure on Manchester United, by defeating Sunderland, and after the Black Cats’ gut-wrenching shambles of a non-performance against Everton, that should not be too difficult.

Arsenal should make it eight consecutive league wins as they face QPR which really would make next weekend’s home game with City that bit more exciting if that is possible.

As always, play along. Now that I have scored nine, the goal really absolutely must be 10, so you must aim for that as well. One for a correct result, two for a correct score. Like I mentioned previously, this score system is not just some meaningless thing I have invented to differentiate myself from Mark Lawrenson – oh hang on, I’ve read that wrong, it is precisely that.

Last week’s score: 9 (best ever)
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Saturday March 31, 2012

Aston Villa 0-2 Chelsea (15:00)

Aston Villa could really do with the season ending immediately – the atmosphere of the whole club is total negativity. They have enough quality to survive but require a galvanising team spirit to raise them further up. So dreadfully bereft of that as they are, Villa will inevitably struggle.

Roberto Di Matteo was fortunate to be handed four winnable games to start life at Stamford Bridge. That said, a draw at home to Spurs, late defeat at the Etihad, and victory away at Benfica since then ain’t too shabby. Chelsea have shored things up defensively conceding just five goals in seven games under the Italian, though up top, they really could with being a little more composed and clinical. Decent enough to beat a poor side. 0-2.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Everton 2-0 West Brom (15:00)

Everton have lost only four of the last 21 games and though that record is impressive, the last two away performances against Swansea and Sunderland were better than the rest put together. Everton look rock solid defensively, and really threatening going forward.

The mood around Goodison has not been right all season. Expect that to change on Saturday. There’s no more special feeling for me as an Evertonian than clapping the boys onto the pitch after a week like this. The crowd will boost the players, we will be back to our old selves.

West Brom are an excellent side, and Roy Hodgson is one of my favourite managers. His balance between criticism and praise of players strikes me as complete honesty. Despite that, I don’t see them having much of a chance here even if David Moyes rotates his side as expected.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Fulham 3-1 Norwich (15:00)

I hope Fulham strengthen the squad in the summer, not that they particularly need to – just because they are a really good side at the minute and Martin Jol has a fantastic eye for a player. A few good signings could really push them on. In Dempsey, Dembele and Pogrebnyak, Fulham have one of the most skilful, powerful strikeforces and I love to watch them play.

Jol’s men showed real steel against Manchester United which is not something you would readily associate with them, and so expect some residual confidence from that performance. As for Norwich – what was Grant Holt playing at getting sent off against Wolves? After my big build-up last, he looked all set for a hat-trick and then that? You daft sod!

I respect Paul Lambert’s men even as an away side – they will definitely compete in this game. Ultimately however, Fulham’s craftier types will earn the win.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Manchester City 3-0 Sunderland (15:00)

This will be a deceptive result in the title race I think. The wheels are coming off for City at the moment. A fortunate draw away at Stoke, Patrick Vieira’s constant stream of nonsense, Aguero’s new injury, Tevez now appearing their main striking hope – not exactly the plain sailing you would expect of champions.

In spite of that, they will hammer Sunderland. Why? Because Martin O’Neill men are a team of average to decent players at best (Stephane Sessegnon apart) who improve their standards with co-operation, confidence and momentum. Well the balloon burst on Tuesday, and as a dominant Everton side ripped them to pieces, you could see the Sunderland players crumbling before your eyes.

With that game behind them, Sunderland have no hope this season, and psychologically, will look at breaking City’s great home record as something far beyond their means. City to win, Tevez to score.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
QPR 0-3 Arsenal (15:00)

QPR have no chance of staying up. They would if only they allowed themselves to compete, but the toxic combination of awful defending and an astonishing disregard for discipline, will expose Mark Hughes’ men for what they really are: a Championship side.

Arsenal on the other hand are brilliant at the moment. Seven consecutive league victories is good enough to reflect a team’s standing, not just their form. Wenger’s men have re-overtaken Spurs – I’m not talking about third place, I mean in terms of being the Premier League’s best attacking side. Nothing comes to mind in the way of a warning against tipping Arsenal, so I’ll tip them heavily. 3-0.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Wigan 1-2 Stoke (15:00)

Credit where it is due, I have written Wigan off for a while, but five points from the last three games has given them the opportunity to survive. They have deserved those points too, passing well, attacking in numbers, and defending with more sense.

They do however give away a fair few chances and it seems like all it would take for the Latics to be punished is a confident striker with some decent service. Cue Peter “Jesus christ, what a goal!” Crouch and his merry band of supply-merchants. Wigan to play well but carelessly, Stoke to nick it.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Wolves 2-1 Bolton (15:00)

Terry Connor must think: ’if we don’t win this one we’re doomed’. I say ‘Terry Connor’, I really mean myself. Defeat would leave Wolves effectively eight points behind Bolton, whereas a victory would close the gap to just a point.

I expected a Bolton defeat last week but it seemed that the Fabrice Muamba situation helped them gain a vital victory. I was not particularly impressed with them, but that wasn’t really the point of the day. As for this one qualitywise – don’t hold your breath. That shouldn’t stand in the way of a good game however, and with both sides’ as deeply-plunged into the relegation abyss as they are, expect a real battle.

Wolves to claim a valuable first three points for the boss.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Newcastle United 0-5 Liverpool (13:30) (April Fools!)
Newcastle United 2-1 Liverpool

I frequently sing the praises of Alan Pardew and his team, so they could at least have the decency to beat Liverpool, and give Everton a chance to go above them in the table. Newcastle’s last outing at West Brom showcased why they are such a dangerous side. Cisse, Ba, and Ben Arfa mean chances and goals, simple as that.

How Liverpool have lost to perhaps the worst two Premier League sides in recent weeks is mystifying – it’s bloody hilarious and mystifying. The Reds will respond, no doubt about that, but a tough game against a Newcastle side overflowing with confidence and “champagne football” as Pardew put it, will come just a bit too early. Narrow victory earned by Cisse.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Tottenham 2-0 Swansea (16:00)

Spurs really need to get back to winning ways. A season that has started so promisingly could yet end miserably, though they can to remedy that with some consistent league form and an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea. Redknapp’s men have been really unlucky of late and are much better than their lull suggests.

Swansea were second best in every department at home to Everton last week and really did not look like threatening at all. Though the Toffees were on top form, Brendan Rodgers will have expected more of his players. Superior quality with previal in this one as Spurs will dominate the game and buck their wasteful trend.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Monday, April 2, 2012

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Manchester United (20:00)

Considering they have fought relegation all year, Blackburn are a really decent side. They have two great strikers in Yakubu and Junior Hoilett, and there has been an evident spirit there throughout

Even though Fulham defended well, Manchester United should have scored more last week to reduce the goal difference. That said, the performance was encouraging. For the first time this season, United are the best side in Manchester.

Victory rather than defeat to Blackburn back in December would see United six points clear – the least they can do is amend that. I expect a mechanistic win, not particularly impressive, but a vital three points all the same.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Middlesbrough Football Club’s PR is well known for being a joke amongst the supporters. Every time something comes out they end up shooting themselves in the foot and the most recent rule proves no different.

Last month the Boro fans in the South East corner, better known as the Red Faction, weren’t allowed to bring a drum into the Riverside Stadium. The obvious question everyone wants to ask the club is why? Queens Park Rangers, Bolton and Portsmouth are all well known for having a drum on match days but why can’t Middlesbrough? But this isn’t it, this is just the start of the endless calamities.

Rewind to September 2010, Boro had just won back to back games for the first time that season under Gordon Strachan. A few days later the club come out with the infamous banner ban; you’re not allowed to bring a banner into the stadium unless it’s been tested and it’s fireproof. I can remember laughing when I first heard this because people have been bringing banners to the Riverside since it opened so why introduce it now? Why now when we have a half empty stadium compared to the full houses we got every week under the Bryan Robson era. I mean what are the club afraid of? Is the silk going to cut someone’s head open or perhaps create a spark running over a baldie? Come on!

Bringing it up to speed, I heard a Middlesbrough fan say you’re now not allowed to take flags into the ground. Young kids have been stopped at the turnstiles and told they can’t wave their flag around the Riverside. And that’s not the best bit, where are they buying them from? The club shop! (I hope they’ve been fire tested!) This is just too farcical to laugh at. I hope anybody who has been turned away on match days because of this walks straight back to the club shop for a refund.

Again, this doesn’t apply for every sporting venue because at the weekend every Saracens fan was given a flag to wave before kick-off and a few months ago Chelsea had a huge banner going half way round Stamford Bridge. So why Middlesbrough? If they are that concerned about fire safety surely it won’t be long before they stop selling programs?

These can’t be health and safety rules across the Football League because other teams have them so why are Middlesbrough the exception from everybody else? The supporters are only trying to make an atmosphere so why are they being stopped?

What I want to know is what’s changed? At least once every season, the club used to have an official flag day where they’d welcome all banners and flags in but those days seem to have gone. The only thing that’s changed over recent years is the attendances, and not for the better.

Although I don’t agree with it, I can understand when the stewards tell you to sit down at the match because that’s a rule across the whole country whereas these stupid rules seem only to apply to Middlesbrough.

Possibly the most ludicrous of them all has to be from early 2009 when season ticket holders were sent a letter to ‘keep the noise down’. Apparently a number of fans had contacted the club and complained about the noise on a match day. What do you expect going to a football game, it’s not a library. And to top it all off, this was the season we got relegated and hardly had anything to shout about! However this isn’t the first time I’ve heard supporters being told to stop chanting.

Looking further back, for years Boro have been a joke following the famous fan falling asleep in 2004. During a 4-0 home defeat to Arsenal, a supporter, who had in fact worked early shift before the match, fell asleep and ended up in court accused of being drunk. Eight months later he thankfully wasn’t charged and the judge called the case “ludicrous”. Now, what’s the problem if he does fall asleep? Like the judge said, “It is the right of every Englishman at a football match to fall asleep if they want to.” Surely the club will be happy as long as they’re getting ticket money and bums on seats.

One thing that annoys me about all this is how the club seem to be targeting the youngsters. Earlier this year a 14 year-old fan took his shirt off after Boro scored a goal and was immediately told by a steward to put it back on or else he would be thrown out.How come 40 miles up the road, it’s ok for those big Geordies to have their XXXXXL belly hanging out? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against it, I think it’s funny and it’s something the Geordies are known for but surely a young Smoggie has a better physique than some of those Newcastle supporters you see every week?

Another incident from earlier this year is that a 16 year-old fan was banned until the end of the season for standing on his seat, with no warning. Of course that’s not allowed but surely he should have been given a warning beforehand? These are the supporters of the future and there may not be many around if the club keeps going on like this. Surely there is a better way to go about this.

For some fans it’s actually got to point where they’ve had enough and have stopped going because of these ridiculous rules. I mean, how far is it going to go? Are we eventually going to have no music, no chanting and people strapped to their seat? This is football after all which is supposed to be entertaining and not like being back at school.

The main thing people want to know is simply why? If we’re aiming for the safety officer of the year award fair enough, because that’s all we’ll probably win for some time. But Middlesbrough’s PR is now beyond a joke.

I really hope this message gets to the club so they can work with the fans in trying to improve the stadium on match days because at the end of the day we both want the same thing and that’s for the team to do well.

Before you go please quickly sign the petition below to help fans bring back the drum. Even if you don’t follow Boro, football supporters are one and often need each others help to improve the game. Thanks for reading.

This is the third of my regular ‘And another thing…’ section in which I like to give you some of my more more brief reactions to the weekend’s football. Consider this a snippeted collection of thoughts which may not grab headlines but will hopefully reflect/ contrast/ stir up your own. Get in touch if you think of any of your own – otherwise, enjoy!
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
* Manchester City’s Gareth Barry was fortunate to avoid giving away a penalty at the weekend but this point is regarding Tony Pulis. The Stoke manager has a tendency to run up to the edge of the pitch, often out of his technical area, to bellow at officials. Why is this acceptable?

If a player did that, the very least they would receive is a yellow card. If they did it with the regularity of Pulis, they would be sent off and banned. Stoke and their boss get away with far, far, far too much, and it is about time this was addressed.

Grow up, accept that you don’t win every decision, stop prancing up and down like a spoilt child and concentrate on what you do best. These sort of issues really do sully what is an otherwise impressive reputation for both manager and club.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–
*Another week and yet another ‘Luis Suarez is a cheat’ update. The Liverpool striker bundled home a disallowed goal with his hand in the 2-1 defeat to Wigan – let’s do a brief status report. So far in Suarez short career, we have diving, biting, hand-balling, and racism. His obvious talent aside, what a scumbag, what a source of shame for supporters.

A brief point: what sort of prat using his hand from a yard out? He could have chested, shouldered, headed, even faced that ball into the goal. Instead, the vulgar inclinations of one of world football’s biggest cheats robbed Liverpool of the lead and probably three points.

Of the famous ‘This is Anfield’ sign, the great Bill Shankly once said: ”It’s there to remind our lads who they’re playing for, and to remind the opposition who they’re playing against.” Next time you take to the field in front of your home supporters, Mr Suarez, you might want to lift your head a few inches.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

* For years, Joey Barton has taken stick about practically everything from everybody in football. I often defended him believing him a decent player, though an undoubted moron. Well Joey, consider that support taken away – you’re rubbish!

If such a volatile egotist cannot contribute on the pitch, he has nothing to offer. His presence takes on only detrimental significance. QPR’s impending relegation ought to hammer the final nail in the coffin of Barton’s Premier League career.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–
* How strange is it to view a Newcastle United side as being a real figure of respect? For so long after Andy Carroll’s departure, I lambasted Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias (editorial note: I decided that ‘Llambiasted’ was too weak a pun to include) for not spending the money to push the club on.

Well, look at them now. In Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa, Newcastle have three of the best attackers in the Premier League to complement an impressively solid defence and midfield. So, despite my natural dislike of Ashley, you have to say fair play.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–
* Glenn Hoddle for England? Surely, not. Has it really got to the stage where a manager can simply suggest that he should be the England manager in order for him to be considered? Hoddle has done nothing since leaving the post to warrant a second chance, though of course the conditions of his exit were dubious to say the least.

The job has to go to Harry Redknapp, but if not, then Roy Hodgson is absolutely the man for the job. Hodgson’s credentials are unmatched in the English game – his experience would give him a huge advantage over all other candidates.

Though I would anticipate a fairly defensive English side – just the sort that has really turned me off the national team in recent years – I would expect a solid, hard-working, fully capable one a- la Hodgson’s Fulham and West Brom who serve as excellent references for his application.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————-
* Manchester United really surprised me against Fulham. A night match at Old Trafford with the chance to not only steal back the Premier League lead but claw back what was a humongous goal difference and they win 1-0? Not the performance of champions.

United’s home displays may have been poor of late but they will win the league away from home as I see it. Stripped of the adrenalinized fervour of home support and habit, champions must win their away fixtures with character, strength and solidity – something which is wholly absent from City’s away record (two wins in the last nine). That will be the difference.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Anything I’ve missed? The point of this ‘And another thing…’ section is to hopefully stir up debate about the smaller talking-points of the weekend in order that they not be overlooked in favour of title-chasing and relegation-fighting. Comment/ email any of your personal reactions – I find them really interesting, and quite often, these sorts of things are the raw materials from which I construct my article.

Less than ten games left of the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season and we’re still no clearer as

Less than ten games left of the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season and we’re still no clearer as to how things are going to eventually pan out. The race for the title is still wide open, as is the fight for the minor places in the top four, the battle for Champions’ League football next season. Important results at the bottom of the league this week have cast more uncertainty on just who will drop out of the top division at the end of the campaign, and who will be left standing to fight for another year.

Manchester City put in a less than fantastic display against a well organised Stoke City side at the Britannia on Saturday evening. City had the chance to go two points clear of their main rivals Manchester United, with the latter not playing until Monday evening, however they never really looked like doing so in a match of few chances.

The first half produced little in the way of goalmouth action, and in fact, it was Stoke who had the best opportunity five minutes before half time, Ryan Shawcross getting the faintest of glances on a corner, but with Hart beaten, Pablo Zabaleta made a fantastic clearance off the line. Earlier in the half two challenges had set the tone for what would be an intensely physical encounter. Gareth Barry should have received a yellow card at a minimum, and conceded a penalty, for his overzealous tackle on Glenn Whelan which left the Irishman floored for some time. Shortly afterwards an aerial clash between Dean Whitehead and David Silva left the Spaniard needing to be bandaged up before he could continue.

After the break Nasri and Dzeko had efforts saved by Begovic, before Peter Crouch produced a moment of sublime brilliance, which underlines why any England manager should include him in the squad to travel to Poland and Ukraine this Summer. A definite contender for goal of the season, Crouch diverted Begovic’s clearance to Pennant in the 58th minute, his header back to the striker was controlled, spun on, and smashed on the volley, dipping over Hart and into the far corner, from 25 yards. A truly wonderful goal.

Mancini’s men rallied, and Carlos Tevez was introduced to the action, but it was Yaya Toure’s deflected effort that saved City’s blushes. Fifteen minutes from time, the Ivorian strode forward and unleashed a powerful swerving shot from just over 25 yards, his effort flicked off the head of Ryan Shawcross, just in front of Begovic, which left the Stoke stopper with little chance even though he managed to get hands on it. 1-1 the final score, City back on top, but only on goal difference, United in the driver’s seat.

At the other end of the table, Wigan produced their first ever victory at Anfield to give themselves real hope of avoiding the drop again this year. The home side, as has been the case for much of this season, dominated the opening half an hour, but failed to convert their possession and superiority into goals. Wigan took the lead on the half hour, Jamie Carragher, in for the injured Agger, made a poor clearing header under pressure from Moses, Skrtel, forced into a hurried clearance, produced a clumsy attempt to clear the ball, kicking the Wigan attacker in the jaw; penalty kick, which Shaun Maloney coolly converted.

Liverpool who brought Carroll on at the break, equalised within two minutes of the re-start. A flowing move and exchange of passes between Gerrard and Suarez, ended with the Uruguayan providing a classy, first-time finish into the far corner of Al Habsi’s goal. Suarez, who’d been denied by a brilliant Al Habsi stop in the first-half, thought he’d given his side the lead just minutes later, bundling home from close range. Referee, Lee Mason, however, disallowed the goal for handball, much to the disgust of Kenny Dalglish and the Liverpool players, and booked Suarez. It seemed like a very harsh decision at the time as nobody picked up on it, and the linesman did not raise his flag, the replays are, at best, inconclusive and Liverpool and Suarez can feel very hard done by.

That said, Liverpool only had themselves to blame for the poor defending that allowed Wigan to score the winner. A hopeful shot from the edge of the box by McCarthy hit, an unprepared, Jamie Carragher, who didn’t have his best day in a red shirt, it deflected to Caldwell, and the big defender had time to control the ball, sell Andy Carroll a dummy, and finish like a seasoned striker into the bottom corner.

Liverpool huffed and puffed, but failed to inject any real fluency in their play, and this was reflected in their lack of clear cut chances, on the couple of occasions that they did create oppurtunities, they were either well defended or Al Habsi was equal to them. The one positive note for Liverpool was the introduction late on of, youngster, Raheem Sterling. The seventeen year old, who is still thought to be a season away from regular first team football, was drafted in from the reserves due the injury crisis at Anfield; what he did he did well, and he was not over-awed by the occasion, which bodes well for his future. A remarkable win for Wigan, and manager Roberto Martinez was understandably over the moon about the result, which is more than can be said for Kenny Dalglish and the Anfield crowd.

The round-up starts at Old Trafford, where Manchester United beat Fulham 1-0 on Monday evening, ensuring that Manchester City’s return to the top lasted only two days. United began the game well, before going off the boil and allowing the visitors to gain a foothold in the match. On a night when Alex Ferguson had been looking for a barrage of goals to improve his side’s goal difference, United managed just one. It came three minutes before the break, Wayne Rooney converting Jonny Evans’ cutback. The one goal remained enough to give the Champions all three points though, and they owe a particular debt to young referee Michael Oliver, who failed to award what looked for all the world like a stonewall penalty, for Michael Carrick’s 87th minute foul on Danny Murphy. Just how important a mistake will that prove to be in the race for the Premier League title, as United go three points clear at the top?

Bolton Wanderer’s helped themselves out of the bottom three by recording their second 2-1 victory over Blackburn this season. Two headed goals in seven first-half minutes from David Wheater (28 & 35), were enough to give Bolton the win at the Reebok, on a day that they played for stricken colleague Fabrice Muamba, who is still recovering in hospital. Stephen N’zonzi replied for Rovers (68), but Wanderers held on. Both sides, in the drop-zone for so much of the season, now look like they could stay up.

Queens Park Rangers followed up their miraculous victory in midweek by surrendering tamely to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Bendtner (41), McClean (70), who excelled, and Sessegnon (76), back from his ban, scored the goals for the Black Cats, who bounced back after their defeat at Blackburn earlier in the week. Taiwo responded with a tremendous free-kick for Rangers (79), albeit only in consolation, and they had Djibril Cisse sent off for the second time since his January arrival for a two footed lunge; he’ll now miss half of their remaining fixtures. Times are looking bleak at Loftus Road.

Staying with the teams at the wrong end of the table, Wolves threw away a one goal lead at Carrow Road, going down 2-1 to a Norwich side happy to get back to winning ways after a mid-season blip in recent weeks. Wolves took the lead through Matt Jarvis in the 25th minute, but that lead lasted just a matter of seconds before Grant Holt broke the offside trap at the other end and finished superbly, leaving Hennessey a mere spectator. Holt scored the Canaries’ second from the spot just before half-time, after Eggert Jonsson was deemed to have handled Hoolihan’s shot. Holt was sent off for a second yellow card offence late on, but the big striker’s work was already done. Norwich go eleventh, Wolves stay bottom, now three points adrift of Wigan in nineteenth, their Premier League status looks to be in severe jeopardy.

Arsenal and Newcastle both scored three goals on their way to routine victories over Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion repectively. Kieron Gibbs’ first goal for the club (16), followed up by Walcott’s 25th minute strike had wrapped the game up for the Gunners’ early on, against a typically poor Villa. Michel Arteta’s 90th minute bullet put the icing on the cake as Arsenal made it six wins in a row, and consolidated third place; Villa will soon be looking over their shoulders’ if they don’t improve quickly. Newcastle had their opponents similarly taken care of early on, first-half goals from Cisse (6 & 34), and man of the match, Ben Arfa (12), took care of Albion, for whom Shane Long replied in the second-half (51). Newcastle impressive, and now eight points clear of seventh placed Liverpool.

Everton new-boy Nikica Jelavic again showed his predatory prowess as he scored his side’s second goal in their 0-2 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. The home side dominated the opening half but couldn’t find the break-through, but in the 59th minute Leighton Baines’ stunning free-kick gave the visitors the lead, and they didn’t look back. Jelavic tapped in fifteen minutes from time to make the victory safe, after lovely footwork by Fellaini had created the chance. Swansea were poor in the second-half, but Everton were strong, and deserved the victory.

Finally, Chelsea and Tottenham played out a bore draw in their London Derby at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off. With the teams battling it out for the final Champions’ League spot, it was a game that neither manager dared to lose, and that showed in the performances and attitudes displayed on the pitch. Tottenham had the better chances, but failed to convert any of them, as their awful run continues, just two points from a possible fifteen beginning with that capitulation at the Emirates. Chelsea’s boost after the sacking of Vilas Boas seems to be wearing off, but they’re still in position to challenge strongly for fourth, should Tottenham’s form not improve.

Weekly Review Following the modest £6.25 win on the 3-3 goal-fest between Blackpool and Leciester in

Weekly Review

Following the modest £6.25 win on the 3-3 goal-fest between Blackpool and Leciester in midweek, my weekend bets landed me with a hefty £65 loss.

Ridiculous as it may sound, I enjoyed all three matches.

Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur (Tip: Chelsea to win -£10)

I had expected my beloved Spurs to struggle again at Stamford Bridge and I’m sure they would have if the Blues had struck early on.

But they didn’t and Harry Redknapp’s men looked the more likely side to win the game, bossing possession with 55 percent, rattling the woodwork twice and being accountable for 19 of the game’s 30 shots.

Liverpool 1-2 Wigan Athletic (Tip: Liverpool to win -£50)

Kenny Dalglish’s Reds were awful and made me look rather silly. Liverpool were the more dominant side but it seemed they were almost of the mindset: ‘Ok, we’re a lot better than this lot, let’s make it interesting.’

The Latics could not even muster a single corner in the game so Martin Skrtel decided to donate them a penalty kick.

However, Gary Caldwell’s second-half winner was sublimely taken and, by that point, I was simply caught up in the fairytale of it all and had totally forgotten I was losing a small fortune.

West Bromwich Albion 1-3 Newcastle United (Tip: over 4.5 goals -£5)

I like watching Newcastle because, with my broad northern accent, I fit it when I shout. Whereas, at Spurs games people can’t understand me and think I’m a jolly-come-lately and a ‘dirty norvan monkey’.

After my financially horrific Saturday, I just wanted to watch a good open game with lots of goals, which is exactly what I got. Unfortunately, I was one goal short of winning my bet and recouping some of my weekend deficit. Nevertheless, I felt my prediction was proved a noble one.

Rallying call

My own personal amusement aside, I am starkly aware that my tips serve a wider audience and I am therefore very disappointed with the way events panned out.

However, I think my recent form justifies your patience and I will strive to steer the ship back on course immediately, starting with tomorrow’s Champions League tips.

Newcastle produced an excellent attacking display to beat West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns and move level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea.

Hatem Ben Arfa crossed for Papiss Cisse to open the scoring with an easy finish from what appeared an offside position.

The superb Ben Arfa then curled in the second before again teeing up Cisse to drill past home goalkeeper Ben Foster.

A defensive mix-up let substitute Shane Long pull one back but Newcastle held on to maintain their push for Europe.

It has been a memorable season for the Magpies and, on this evidence, they remain capable of challenging for a top-four finish.

Longshot – £5 on 5-1 at William Hill

West Bromwich Albion V Newcastle United (Sunday 16.00) – Over 4.5 goals

After the hefty loss on my Saturday punts, I have decided to go for a bet that will hopefully provide me with some entertainment.

There have been flood of goals in recent matches between these two – 20 in their last four Premier League meetings and 25 in their last five meetings in all competitions.

Both sides are much better going forward than they are at the back and have strikers that are bang in form. Peter Odemwingie has netted five in his last four appearances, while the sweet-toothed Demba Ba has scored 16 in 23 starts this campaign.

Firstly, the lack of recent content has been due to my life being run by my Dissertation. Hopefully content will pick up on here again soon. But for now, here’s some predictions:

Saturday

Arsenal v Aston Villa – 1-1

Arsenal are flying at the moment but from what I remember Villa always seem to do okay at the Emirates. I don’t think they’ll win it but I can see them taking a sneaky point away from North London.

Bolton Wanderers v Blackburn Rovers – 2-1

Big game for Bolton with the whole Fabrice Muamba incident taking over their week. I would be surprised if any players pull out of the squad and surely they’ll be giving 200% each to earn a vital derby victory for the central midfielder.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur – 1-2

This game is huge. I said to someone the other week that if Chelsea win this one they’ll finish above Spurs in the league. I think that the midweek loss to Man City will have winded them a little though, and Spurs will come out all guns blazing after a poor month. 2-1 Spurs.

Liverpool v Wigan Athletic – 2-0

Wigan played well against West Brom last week but if they get anything out of this I’ll be shocked. That said; Liverpool have dropped points to a few lower table sides at home this season, surely they won’t let it happen again!

Norwich City v Wolverhampton Wanderers – 2-0

As much as I’d love to predict a Wolves win I can’t see myself doing it for the rest of the season. Norwich have been quality at home as well and I can see them causing some damage against what appears to be a non-existent Wolves backline.

Stoke City v Manchester City – 2-2

Man City have looked a little dodgy away from home recently and Stoke isn’t an easy place to go. It will be a tough game for both sides and I can see them cancelling each other out. That or either one will put away a late winner!

Sunderland v QPR – 2-0

QPR had a massive confidence boosting win against Liverpool in midweek. That said, I still think Sunderland will win.

Swansea City v Everton – 1-2

Everton have been a bit of a dark horse this season and I can see them getting something out of a place where many teams have struggled.

Sunday

West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle – 2-1

West Brom beat Newcastle at St. James’s and I’ve got a feeling they might do the double over Newcastle this season.

Monday

Manchester United v Fulham – 3-0

Fulham always struggle against Man United – and United seem to have a fire in their belly which I think will keep up their current winning form for a while. Comfortable home win.

As you may have noticed, I have played around with the old site design and I have to say: what an ex

As you may have noticed, I have played around with the old site design and I have to say: what an excellent way to spend your time that is. I hope it improves the overall experience, the sidebar to the left should makes things more straightforward anyway. Enough about that, to matters at hand…

My biggest tip for this weekend’s Premier League action is to keep an eye out for Arsenal. They were brilliant against Everton in midweek – the character and efficiency showed will seep out in the form of confidence now they’ve earned respect.

The Gunners’ opponents Aston Villa may be well-rested and coming off the back of a victory, but form is temporary and well, Villa are hopeless so I expect a hammering.

Aside from that game, well Tevez obviously. City’s late kick-off with Stoke will be a real test of the side in general, as well as the Argentinian’s own potential value to the team.

It’s hardly sticking my neck on the line I know, but you wouldn’t be surprised if he nicked the winner, would you?

Liverpool (I’m still laughing) will hope to get the hilarious QPR defeat out of their system and should view Wigan as ideal fodder for a pummeling of their own. Remember: one point for a correct result, two for a correct score.

Last week’s score: 5 (Must do better)
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Barclays Premier League
Saturday March 24, 2012

Chelsea 2- 2 Tottenham (12:45)

In spite of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final with Benfica, Chelsea ought to have restored enough pride by now to compete in this London derby. Spurs were unlucky against Stoke, and against Everton, against everyone they don’t beat basically, but you cannot deny a clear lack of killer instinct in recent weeks.

Gareth Bale has however played a lot more like his best during Wednesday’s draw and he should carry that on in this game. So too should Luka Modric who could so foolishly have left for Stamford Bridge last summer. Chelsea’s big performers should be up for another hard shift but I think they will be fortunate to escape with a point.

Arsenal 3-0 Aston Villa (15:00)

Arsenal’s defence stood impressively firm against Everton on Wednesday night and the whole side played with the sort of solidity and togetherness that is a natural by-product of winning games.

The possibility of robbing Spurs of third place could have had an all-too predictably detrimental effect on confidence. Take it from me as an Evertonian, it had a visibly positive effect on them – they were outstanding.

Updating that comment slightly, if Chelsea beat Spurs in Saturday’s early kick-off, Wenger’s men will prepare themselves for the trip of a <del>poor </del> completely rubbish Aston Villa side knowing victory will open up a four-point gap over their rivals. No contest.

Villa are lucky they have the points on the board. Wasn’t it only last season people were saying about an Alex McLeish side ‘yeah they’re bad but surely they won’t get sucked into a relegation battle’? I expect them to get battered and Arsenal to be back to their fluent best.

Bolton 1-2 Blackburn Rovers (15:00)

Obviously attention will be drawn to the Fabrice Muamba situation but that could really go one of two ways so it’s best not to speculate – I’ll just stick with form. Blackburn have been excellent in the last two games and have steered clear of relegation as far as I’m concerned.

If I’m right, expect to see Rovers play with even greater freedom and confidence which can only mean good things for a team that boasts one of the best strikeforces in the league at the minute. Saturday’s game with Bolton could mark a real change in momentum and fortunes at Ewood Park.

December’s home defeat to Wanderers left Blackburn bottom of the league with 10 points from 17 games. Victory at the Reebok would mean Rovers have accumulated 21 points from the next 13 leaving them as close to Swansea in eighth as relegation would be to them in 16th. Regained confidence will allow superior quality to prevail – Blackburn for me.

Liverpool 3-0 Wigan (15:00)

Liverpool were really complacent in midweek, missing far too many ch – oh I can’t do it! That was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages! How they lost that game I’ll never know.

But seriously, the defeat ought to jolt a pretty average but capable Liverpool side into life and Wigan make perfect opponents for that task. On a side note regarding Sebastian Coates’ contribution – goal of the season so far.

The Latics failure to win either of the last two against Norwich and West Brom sends out the worst possible message. If effectively says ‘look, we’re not going to beat you so you may as well have a go’.

Liverpool are way off top four standard but have been incredibly unlucky on many occasions – naturally that luck, particularly their home form has to change some time.

Luis Suarez has done everything but score recently including staying on his feet once or twice, and he is only ever one goal away from top form. My tip: Suarez to score two.

Norwich 2-1 Wolves (15:00)

Wolves’ performance against Manchester United was the sort of woeful, clueless display that only makes you sympathise with supporters. Everyone has been there at one time or another and unfortunately for Terry Connor’s men, now, at the most crucial time, all the positive factors of their play have been drained in place of rapidly-transmittable fear.

I had accused Norwich of being a bit off the boil over the past few games, and though defeat to Newcastle bore several of the same traits, there was a lot in that performance for Lambert’s men to be proud of. Finishing was to blame for not claiming at least a point – expect that to be put right against a Wolves’ side gifting plenty of chances.

One of my favourite parts of Match of the Day each week is the anticipation that accompanies Grant Holt rising to meet a header in the box. Surely he can outwit such a fragile defence to set up a victory for his side.

Sunderland 3-1 QPR (15:00)

Both sides were fairly poor in midweek, each conceding two goals (though only one side won 3-2 – sorry lads, had to) but that’s about the only thing that puts this Sunderland side in a bracket with Mark Hughes’ QPR.

Defensively, they are solid and they boast the natural attacking enthusiasm that defines Martin O’Neill’s teams.

Sunderland looked out on their feet in parts against Blackburn but the return of Stephane Sessegnon from suspension will be a huge boost. He is the Mackem’s best player by a long stretch, though Fraizer Campbell, James McClean and John O’Shea have all played their part of late. Sunderland to win comfortably.

Swansea 1-2 Everton (15:00)

This is a really interesting game. Everton were just beaten by the most Swansea-esque side in the league, Arsenal, and so you would expect more of the same. Truth is Everton really competed with Arsenal who strike me as the best team in the league at the moment, and the only thing that stood between Nikica Jelavic and one or two goals was a brilliant defensive performance from start to finish.

Swansea’s midfield operates almost exactly like the Gunners’ though they are inferior both up front and at the back. They will create less chances and give more away than Arsenal did on Wednesday, and after two shambolic referee performances in a row, Everton are overdue a turn of luck.

I expect David Moyes to once again shuffle his team in preparation for the FA Cup quarter-final replay with Sunderland on Tuesday but those who come in can be just as adequate on their day. Close game, but a spirit-raising victory for Everton in the end.

Stoke City 1-2 Manchester City (17:30)

I was all set to go for a draw here knowing how much of a performance the Stoke crowd can get out of their side during a night match at home, but then I was put in mind of that headline-grabbing fallen hero Tevez. Without meaning to come across too Ray Winstone here, you’d have to say it’s worth a punt.

Victory over Chelsea was essential and the manner of it potentially crucial. Strikers are fickle folk and the formula really is very simple: player + goals = everything’s alright. Though Tevez did not score, he did the next best thing and will reap the benefit in confidence.

I respect Stoke enough to think that they will be able to rouse themselves for a second tough fixture in a matter of days.

However, the potential combination between Tevez who will be desperate to score, and such unselfish, genius footballers as David Silva and Sergio Aguero must mean a goal is not too far away. City to nick it. Just.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Sunday March 25, 2012

West Brom 2-2 Newcastle (16:00)

Roy Hodgson’s men have been poor of late and were fortunate not to be beaten by Wigan. They are the sort of outfit who buck up their ideas pretty quickly however so this has all the makings of a great game.

Historically, Newcastle fans have a thing for strikers. They mustn’t be able to believe their luck because now they have two of the best in the league. Both players are near faultless performers and back up clinical technical skills with hard work for the team.

If Pardew’s men defend in the same manner as their victory over Norwich, then a competent West Brom side can always take advantage. Long, Odemwingie, Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa – there’s got to be goals. 2-2.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Monday March 26, 2012

Manchester United 2-0 Fulham (20:00)

The key to Manchester United’s recent league success has been quite simply Wayne Rooney – he has played with the sort of ruthlessness that defines not only elite players but champions.

Last May’s Champions League final against Barcelona highlighted his evident superiority over the rest of his teammates, and his wonder goal during United’s latest Spanish humiliation at the hands of Bilbao showed that not much has changed.

The Red Devils have so much talent that all they need is a playmaker and Rooney, despite his impressive goal scoring return this year, has taken up the responsibility of that role.

Without him, the leaders would be snookered but with him, I’ll back them all the way. If City return from a tough trip to the Britannia with anything less than three points, United would be handed the perfect chance to crank up the pressure at the top. Surely Fulham despite their abundant talent will not be able to stop them.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

So the Premiership is bad for English football? That English football clubs are damaging the England

So the Premiership is bad for English football? That English football clubs are damaging the England team, with them bringing talent in from abroad rather than develop or look to bring in home-grown talent?

image from www.telegraph.co.uk

OK, certain rules are now in place and there is an expectancy for top level clubs to develop their own players. However, doesn’t it seem that things are changing naturally anyway, that our English keepers are slowly being seen on the big stage as some of the best in the world. Talented keepers previously overlooked like Ben Foster (previously posted about) of West Bromwich Albion and Joe Hart of Manchester City, who went to other clubs to show that they should be first choice keepers. With some now citing Joe Hart as being one of the best keepers in the world!

Where as in previous years the press were questioning our goalkeeping talent as not matching that of other countries, including that of current world champions Spain, that now we have a pool of talented keepers that are getting themselves recognised on the biggest stages, through international, premiership and cup competition matches. With the Cup competitions also elevating the talent that is emerging in the lower leagues. Talent that includes Tom Heaton of Cardiff City (previously posted about) and that of Frankie Fielding the bright prospect at Derby County and already in the England U21 set up.

image from www.telegraph.co.uk

Also consider Jack Butland of Birmingham City, who like Ben Foster and Joe Hart has gone out on loan to get first team action at Cheltenham Town. That from his incredible displays for Cheltenham, has now being noticed by the Premier League, being linked to Arsenal and Tottenham. This shows that the search for talent is not always abroad, but local too. He has also represented England at every level up to the Under 21s! [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2116662/Jack-Butland-wanted-Arsenal.html#ixzz1pTZ0VtLS ]

For me, all this shows that we have much to look forward to with England. With our current crop of keepers, those waiting in the wings and of the development of the next talent through the expansion of top-level development or at goalkeeper specific centres (like that of our own Academy), the future for England goalkeeping most definitely is much brighter than ever before!

In a previous spotlight I posted about Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and that infamous mix up wi

In a previous spotlight I posted about Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and that infamous mix up with Laurent Koscielny in the 2011 Carling Cup Final. However let’s not forget that in that match, even though Szczesny may not have been having the best of games, in the opposite goal, Ben Foster was showing the world just why he is one England’s finest keepers.

Like Tom Heaton of Cardiff (also previously in one of my Goalkeeper spotlights), Foster was also a former keeper at Manchester United who like Heaton was unlikely to ever be first choice keeper at United considering the form of Edwin van der Sar (and then also to become third choice in the pecking order behind Tomasz Kuszczak). So like Heaton, Foster has had to move away from United to establish himself.

image from www.mirrorfootball.co.uk

Foster had a loan spell away from Manchester United with Watford, where he was described by the then Watford Manager, Aidy Boothroyd as “better than current Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar”. With Boothroyd proclaiming that Foster “is going to be the best goalkeeper in the world.” High praise indeed, but then he did help Watford secure their promotion to the Premier league and was named Player of the Season the following year when on loan again with Watford.

So after impressing on loan and with Watford and with Alex Ferguson also believing he had a potential talent, Foster eventually got the chance to take over from Edwin van der Sar at a time when van der Sar was injured. However, where as David De Gea at Manchester United seems to have been given the time to prove himself even after being slated by the press, Foster appeared not to have had such a grace period.

Like De Gea, Foster to seemed to be having a crisis of confidence.[http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/oct/05/ben-foster-england-manchester-united].

But you have to hand it to Foster, even though being slated by the press, especially after the 2-1 defeat to France, Foster has dusted himself off and got on to show that Aidy Boothroyd’s comments were just.

Foster’s move from Manchester United for an estimated £6m to Birmingham City, really showcased his talent. Although when he first moved, Foster had a lot to live up to as the previous season saw loanee Joe Hart show Manchester City just why he is considered England’s best keeper (and was enough to ensure that Hart then became first choice at Manchester City, which was frustrating to their other great keeper, Shay Given!). However, Foster showed that he was equal to Joe Hart, and kept things as tight as Hart did at the back. Becoming a firm favourite with the Birmingham fans especially after his heroics in that Carling Cup final, picking up the man of the match award in that Final. [http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Birmingham-man-of-the-match-keeper-Ben-Foster-amazed-at-the-Carling-Cup-triumph-over-Arsenal-against-all-odds-article708595.html]

image from www.guardian.co.uk

In addition to his Carling Cup winners medal and man-of the match, like at Watford, Foster was also deservedly awarded Birmingham’s Player of the Season!

Even though Foster was in inspirational form it was not enough to keep Birmingham in the Premiership and with subsequent relegation, meant that Birmingham needed to look at sending out Foster on loan to help their wage bill. This has seen Foster go on loan to West Brom, with the option of signing permanently, should Birmingham fail in their bid to bounce straight back up into the Premier League. Birmingham’s loss is most certainly West Brom’s gain, as he is now their first choice keeper producing again exceptional goalkeeping prowess that is getting the praise he deserves, from his Manager, Roy Hodgson who has stated in the press of his desire to keep Foster permanently [http://www.sundaymercury.net/midlands-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-brom-news/2012/03/18/west-brom-roy-hodgson-praises-ben-foster-66331-30561771/]; and getting high praise from Alan Hansen on this weekend’s Match of the Day after producing a string of fine saves.

image from www.zimbio.com

Foster has most certainly grown into a great goalkeeper. An asset to any team… It now is not really a question as to whether he will pick up more awards, as with the form he is in, it is almost a certainty that he will be honoured again….The only question really for us, England fans, is how can we persuade Foster to join the England squad again? To have both Joe Hart and Ben Foster at future championships with England would be fantastic!

For the second week running Wigan produced an outstanding attacking performance creating numerous chances but ultimately failing to take all three points.

Both sides made changes from their previous line ups with Franco Di Santo replacing the injured Hugo Rodallega and Shaun Maloney starting ahead of Jordi Gomez for the Latics. West Brom were missing the injured Peter Odemwingie and the suspended Jonas Olssen and the ex -Wiganer Paul Scharner was also making a rare start for the Baggies.

Wigan started the game in ferocious fashion creating three great opportunities for Franco Di Santo in the opening five minutes. By the law of averages the Argentinian striker should have netted at least one of them.

Wigan were producing some excellent football with great combination play in the Albion half. Jean Beausejour put over some telling crosses but the Wigan attackers just couldn’t convert.

The chances were coming thick and fast. Beausejour’s cross from the left reached the far post, where Emmerson Boyce headed firmly against the cross bar. James McCarthy also struck the cross bar from 20 yards and from the consequent rebound Ben Foster saved from Victor Moses.

Wigan went in at half time wondering how they had contrived not to be in the lead.

But early in the second half they took a deserved lead. Moses produced some excellent work by beating his defender and cutting the ball back from the by line and James McArthur bundled the ball over the line.

However the lead did not last long as Wigan sat back on the lead and after conceding consecutive corners Albion drew level when Chris Brunt’s corner was headed in by Paul Scharner at the far post.

Joseph Mulumbu should probably have been sent off for an ugly incident with James McArthur, but bizarrely referee Oliver only booked Malumbu, as well as Boyce and Thomas.

Wigan were desperate to get the winner and they continued to pound the Albion goal. Mohammed Diamé shot wide, Graham Dorrans denied Beausejour and Foster saved well from Gareth McAuley’s deflection.

Once again Wigan were unable to make their dominance count. Chance after chance had gone begging.

As the players left the pitch, drizzle turned to heavy rain and soaked the despondent Latics faithful as they trudged away from the stadium.

But as the fans made their way home news started to emerge of a shocking incident at White Hart Lane as Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba had collapsed with a cardiac arrest. The Bolton midfielder was critically ill and fighting for his life. Sometimes there are more important things in life than worrying about your football team.

This week’s set of predictions is poignant for me given the increased importance of Eve

This week’s set of predictions is poignant for me given the increased importance of Everton’s fixture. Though a 12:45 kick-off is not the ideal time, Goodison Park is just the location to restore what had been a great run of form.

David Moyes’ apparent ‘a fall comes before pride’ philosophy will forever be a black mark against in my book but he is of course the sort of manager who can channel negativity.

Moving on to a less subjective, more wide-reaching approach, victory for Manchester United at vulnerable Wolves would open up a four-point gap over Manchester City with Mancini’s men facing an arguably-rejuvenated Chelsea in their next fixture.

With the Europa League done and dusted, things are just about to get fascinating and you can bet your bottom dollar that Alex Ferguson is delighted to have the chance to apply the pressure first.

Remember to play along if you can be arsed: one point for a correct result, two for a correct score.

Last week’s score: 4 (Worst so far)

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Saturday March 17, 2012

The FA Cup quarter-finals

Everton 3-1 Sunderland (12:45)

Well if anyone read my David Moyes article from earlier this week, you will know my feelings on this on already, but just to recap: Everton absolutely must win.

The performance has to be impressive also, and with Nikica Jelavic, Royston Drenthe but most importantly, Leon Osman, returned to the line-up, I expect plenty of chances for the Blues.

Sunderland will fight because of course there is an evident spirit there but Sessegnon’s absence through suspension will be key. I think he’s a fantastic player and without his ability to link the play, I see Sunderland being penned back as Everton try to right the wrong of midweek.

Jelavic is just the sort of striker a player with Osman’s vision requires to win a game. Fingers crossed.

Tottenham 3-0 Bolton Wanderers (17:30)

Despite Harry Redknapp’s lack of post-match dignity last week, I’ll admit that Tottenham deserved to beat Everton. And though their form has been really poor of late for a team that were talked about as title candidates earlier this season, if Spurs finish third and win the FA Cup, that would constitute a brilliant season.

Redknapp is a fantastic motivator and his side have so much quality on the ball and in the box that you can only anticipate goals against an admittedly improved though still decidedly woeful Bolton defence. Pacier, quicker in the mind, and far more clinical, I think 3-0 Spurs may actually be an underestimate.

The Barclays Premier League

Fulham 2-0 Swansea (15:00)

Martin Jol’s side missed a chance last week. Villa were there for the taking and Fulham should have advantage.

A victory would have meant the Cottagers had taken 19 points from the last 21 available; that momentum would have made the visit of a confident Swansea a lot more straight forward.

The enormity of the gulf in resources between Brendan Rodger’s team and Man City really puts that victory in context so credit where it’s due. That said, Swansea are a pretty poor away side and cannot impose themselves like they do at home.

Fulham, the archetypal home side will build up enough pressure, and with Pogrebnyak and Dempsey up front, I really look forward to watching the highlights.

Wigan 1-2 West Brom (15:00)

I would have backed Wigan for three points here if they’d have got their just desserts from the Norwich game, but that opportunity lost is indicative of their general wastefulness/ lack of composure in front of goal. I like Martinez of course, I mean everyone likes Martinez, but I take issue with this whole he plays’ the right way’ thing people say.

As far as I see it, he plays ‘the right way’ the wrong way in that any quick-paced, slick combination of ball retention and attacking should supplement a solid defence rather than compensate for the lack of one.

Take West Brom, for example. They are unlikely to lose this game as because Roy Hodgson places so much importance on the need to maintain shape and reduce risk.

Call it safe, call it boring, I say that savvy is probably more apt. Given the bags of attacking talent in Peter Odemwingie, Shane Long and increasingly James Morrison means they have a real chance of nicking any game, so I’ll take a punt on this one.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Sunday February 18, 2012

The FA Cup quarter-finals

Chelsea 2 -0 Leicester City (14:05)

Even though Chelsea beat Napoli convincingly in the end, I wouldn’t say that convinced me. Watching that game, I was struck by a thought that is possibly lacing the dreams of Arsenal fans everywhere: imagine if they drew Barcelona in the quarters. Genuinely, I would expect an aggregate score line of something like 10-2.

The Chelsea of old would have swept the floor with Leicester but I expect the Foxes to compete in this game. Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Birmingham was a decent result and you always have a chance when there is a striker like Beckford up front (let me just stress as an Evertonian, I mean that on a strictly novelty basis given his cup record). Chelsea’s superior ability to defend and convert chances will be the difference.

Liverpool 2-1 Stoke City (16:00)

If I am painfully honest, I’d have to say that Liverpool are probably the best English cup side. For two reasons really: firstly (and obviously), they bloody win loads of them, and secondly, because their games are always fantastic: 5-4 vs Alaves, 3-3 vs AC Milan, 3-3 vs West Ham, and obviously 2-2 vs Cardiff recently.

Liverpool excel in the cup and an away quarter-final at Anfield is as close to a write-off as they come.

I don’t particularly rate this Liverpool side at the moment, but as the general performance and productivity of the squad has improved, I have simply channeled that cynicism into Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson comments. If Stoke can nick a goal and employ those scandalous time-wasting tactics, they have a chance of a result.

My friend Stocky told me a statistic this week that I judge meaningful enough to form the last word, so here’s doing that justice. Liverpool’s record when they have started Gerrard, Carroll and Suarez: played three, won three, scored 11.

The Barclays Premier League

Wolves 0 -3 Manchester United (13:30)

This is quite simply one the worst possible fixtures for Terry Connor and his side. I really fell sorry for him; the transformation in mentality, belief and momentum that is required is monumental, so his current failure to effect that is hardly a fair indictment. That said, fact is the raw material of the sports journalist and to that end, Wolves are a shaken, weak and beatable team at the moment, and Manchester United, well they want to win the league.

Stung by the lesson they were given for 180 minutes of their Europa League tie with Bilbao, I expect the Old Trafford title machine to find its critical gear. Wayne Rooney’s form has been outstanding but beyond his abundant natural ability, he has shown the sort of relentless desire and clinical efficiency that defines champions. Sub-standard defence vs ruthless attack. No contest.

Newcastle 2-0 Norwich City (16:00)

Newcastle’s unfortunate defeat to Arsenal contained lots of positives, the most important of which for me was the performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. I think he has been impressive all year but of late, has begun to work harder for the team.

He strikes me as the sort of player who can create a chance out of nothing and convert it easily – a godsend of an asset when you consider Newcastle’s two brilliant strikers Ba and Cisse.

Like I said previously, Norwich deserved to be beaten last week against Wigan and as I do not rate Roberto Martinez’s side whatsoever, the Canaries must be out of form as far as I can tell. Newcastle to get back to winning ways with the three said attackers t0 dominate.

Reeling from their disastrous 3-2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night, United looked to

Reeling from their disastrous 3-2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night, United looked to get back to winning ways with the visit of West Bromwich Albion to Old Trafford, and continue their assault on the Premier League title. With the baggies in good form however, on the back of 3 successive wins, United would have to be back to their best in order to secure 3 precious points, and keep the pressure on Manchester City who travelled to Swansea. Fergie opted for 4 changes from the side who succumbed to Athletic, as Ferdinand, Scholes, Welbeck and Carrick all returned to bolster the side.

Boyed by their recent form, the visitors began brightly and nearly took a surprise early lead, as Keith Andrews broke into the box, latching onto Liam Ridgewell’s cross and narrowly sliding his shot wide. Andrews again threatened minutes later, this time from a free kick from 20 yards, which forced keeper David De Gea into a smart save low down, as United struggled to assert themselves onto the contest. Through mainly the good work of Ashley Young, the early pressure subsided, and the England winger continued his good form by testing former United keeper Ben Foster with a stinging drive as United settled into their rhythm. Young’s corner was narrowly headed wide by Danny Welbeck, as the pressure mounted, and United found their groove in the closing stages of the first half. Rooney squandered the clearest opening of the half, failing to steer Young’s cross in at the back post whilst stretching, but he was not to be denied for long, as he latched onto Hernandez’s shot come cross and with the deftest of touches put United into the lead at half time.

United have often been guilty of complacency from leading positions this season, but appeared keen to increase the deficit in the second half, as the reds displayed some of their best attacking football of the season. West Brom were far from spectators however, and perhaps should have had a penalty on the hour mark, as Patrice Evra’s stray leg caught Peter Odemwingie in the box, with perhaps only the theatrical nature of his tumble convincing the ref to wave away his protests. Chances for United were regularly forthcoming, with firstly Rooney denied a spectacular goal by Ben Foster, and other wasteful misses courtesy of Danny Welbeck, who inexplicably missed an open goal after rounding Foster, and Javier Hernandez whose shot struck the inside of the post keeping the Old Trafford crowd on edge. Jonas Olsson however, made a difficult task nearly impossible for the visitors, as he was given his marching orders for a late lunge on Hernandez, earning the defender his 2nd yellow card of the afternoon. And the final nail in the coffin was soon to follow, as Rooney sent the superb Young clear down the left, who skipped past Andrews, who could only drag down the United winger handing Rooney the chance to double his tally from the spot. He duly obliged, and sent United eyes to south Wales, where news filtered through that Manchester City had succumbed to defeat to Swansea, sending the reds back to the top of the table with just 10 games to play in an afternoon which could shape who lifts the title in May.

Mancini cannot afford to lose anymore game in order to stay competitive in the title race.

So what Man City is hoping for now, is for the Reds to flop so that they could take back their spot. Will it be possible? What’s your thought?

Saturday

Aston Villa v Fulham – 1-1

Fulham are coming off the back of an impressive 5-0 win against struggling Wolves. Villa – not on the finest form of their lives I think will be a tough game for them. They’re struggling for strikers as well but I think they will hold Fulham to a draw.

Bolton Wanderers v QPR – 2-2

One of two massive games at the bottom this weekend. Once again I think these two will cancel each other out in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.

Chelsea v Stoke City – 2-0

No more AVB – it’s time for Chelsea to push on under Roberto Di Matteo. Perhaps AVB’s exit will be the push Chelsea needed to finally sort their season out. 2-0

Everton v Tottenham Hotspur – 1-1

Spurs have a got a point to prove as they come off the back of big losses to Arsenal and Manchester United. Goodison Park is no easy place to go and win though as Man City and Chelsea will tell you. I’m going for another draw.

Sunderland v Liverpool – 0-2

Sunderland are missing skipper Lee Cattermole and forward Stephane Sessegnon through suspension so their next few games will tough. A chance then for Liverpool to capitalise as they continue to push for top 5.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Blackburn Rovers – 1-2

You’d have to be a brave man to put your money on Wolves nowadays. And that’s saying something as Blackburn have been the team to avoid all season! TC needs to pull something out of the bag and fast – starting today in this crucial home fixture.

Sunday

Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion – 3-0

There aren’t many games I want Man United to win but it’s about time someone wipes the smug smiles off the Albion fans faces. After thrashing rivals Wolves and a win against Chelsea they’re seemingly on Cloud Nine right now so lets hope United can destroy them tomorrow.

Norwich City v Wigan Athletic – 2-0

Surprise package of the year Norwich! And at home they look incredible. It’s hard to bet against them at Carrow Road these days and with Wigan struggling at the bottom I’m going for The Canaries.

Swansea City v Manchester City – 1-2

Swansea have been excellent at home this season, but Norwich broke them the other week. I have to say I wouldn’t be surprised if Swansea took points off City, but I’m going for an away win.

Monday

Arsenal v Newcastle United – 1-1

Probably the toughest call of the weekend this. Arsenal have had two big wins but can they make it three? I think they could well slip up this weekend.

I’ve had a little bit to drink, so let’s be honest, there isn’t a better time to write. Bukowski made a career out of it after all.

If there was ever a better time to make a comment about Roger Johnson, it would be now. But alas, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. And by barrel, I mean tea cup, and by shoot, I mean bazooka the fuck out of it.

I just wish this had come out before, it certainly would have explained his running like a wounded gazelle.

I digress, I am here to talk about the relegation battle, the 6 pointer, the survival of the fittest, or the shittest, whatever works.

But you see, I have the rare ‘privelage’ to actually go to the game tomorrow, mainly because I won tickets. I mean, I live in London, I’m not going to fork out £100+ all the time. That £100 could go towards, at most, a Curlywurly. Maybe a can of Tizer if you go to Superdrug.

I won two tickets, and I’m really happy that I’m taking my lady friend along with me. Granted, I’m a little worried as she told me her dad is a Blackburn fan, and when she was little, she used to go to games wearing a Liverpool kit because she liked Jamie Redknapp. I’m just glad West Brom don’t have any good looking players.

Am really looking forward to it though. Not the game, obviously, or the atmosphere most of the time, but just to get drunk and hang out and try show her what football can be about.

I did say ‘try’.

However, what I am worried about is mainly how I will act.

I’ve been known to be quite ‘passionate’ at times. One incident involved me punching a table so hard it knocked all the drinks off. Baring in mind sat there was somebody I’d only just met, this didn’t give off the best first impression.

Maybe this is what I need though, that calming effect, something that makes you think ‘well yeah, football is good, but lying in bed, quoting Spaced and drinking is way better’. Maybe this is my first step to taking a step back from football a little bit, because man, it can be fucking heartbreaking at times.

But, I love that heartbreak, I love that excitement and the drama that football can be, on and off the pitch. And yes, it’d be great if she was a part of that, but I totally understand if she didn’t want to be. If anything, it’s a win-win situation if she doesn’t. It’d give me that chance to get away, because now and then we all need a break from somebody, especially if we spend alot of time with them. And football,, is that somebody.

And with all this drama that has happened over the past few weeks, a bit of a break was needed. But what is needed now is a hug, and a make-up. I am there tomorrow, let’s forget these past few weeks happened, and just put a smile on my, and her, face.
