For the record, the Bruins won the first three matchups during my years in Westwood, the tail end of eight in a row total (1991 – 1998).

Uncle Ricky Neuheisel will continue his drive take the town from Uncle Pete. Nelson Rosario, Kevin Prince, Jonathan Franklin and Lake Balboa Birmingham’s Milton Knox will solidify UCLA’s future on the offensive side, and Brian Price & Alterraun Verner will shut down Matt Barkley and the misused stable of backs in the McKnight/Gable-less USC backfield. For the record, I like Carroll quite a bit but his handling of the QB position from the anger at the departure of Mark Sanchez to the unbridled, cloying, hyperbolic praise for his current Superfrosh has left the first real question mark of his otherwise outstanding tenure.

Regardless, UCLA’s momentum will shine stronger than the Trojan might can handle. The city capital will once again be situated between Bel-Air and Brentwood. The Bruins will win, Los Angelinos. The Bruins WILL win.

Tämä pieni kaupunki valvoo asetuksia tarkasti ja hankkiutuu eroon Los Angelesia vaivaavasta dramatiikasta.

Muutaman kilometrin päässä Los Angelesin kaupungintalolta on ollut vuosien ajan käynnissä pienimuotoinen kokeilu kannabiksen säännöstelemisessä. Osavaltion suurimman kaupungin hyväksyessä virheellisen toimenpiteistä pidättäytymisen, kiistellessä sääntöehdotuksista loputtomiin ja seuratessa hämmentyneenä lääkekannabiskauppojen lisääntymistä, West Hollywood painoi eteenpäin.

Kohdatessaan omien kannabisputiikkiensa räjähdysmäisen kasvun vuonna 2005, tämä Los Angelesin ympäroimä kaupunki esitteli käytännön toimenpiteistä pidättäytymisestä, määräsi väliaikaiset säädökset jo toiminnassa oleville, asetti tiukan valvonnan ja määritteli sallittujen kannabisliikkeiden määrän neljään. Kolme liikettä ilmestyi korttelin päähän Fountain Dayn koulusta. Yksi niistä, Farmacy, oli aivan nurkan takana. Sen asiakkaat pistivät palamaan yksityiskoulun kanssa jaetulla paikoitusalueella, mikä hermostutti vanhempia. “Yhtäkkiä niitä alkoi avautua, pam pam pam pam”, sanoi Andrew Rakos, koulun johtaja. “Vanhempainyhdistys tuli luokseni ja kertoi, etteivät he ole lainkaan iloisia asiasta. Paikalle alkoi virrata paljon epäilyttävää ainesta.”

Farmacya pyörittää vakavasti sairaita ihmisiä kannabiksella yli 15 vuoden ajan hoitanut farmaseutti JoAnna LaForce. “Olemme vain osa yhteisöä, osa naapurustoa. Meitä ei nähdä riskinä”, sanoi Los Angelesin tilannetta tyrmistyneenä seurannut LaForce. Hän omistaa Farmacy-liikkeet myös Venicessä ja Westwoodissa, ja ne toimivat kaupunkien säädösten mukaisesti.

Rakos on nykyään eräs Farmacyn arvokkaimmista tukijoista. Koska liike on alle 150 metrin päässä koulusta, kaupunki halusi sen muuttavan vuoden loppuun mennessä. Rakos kuitenkin pyysi kaupunginvaltuustoa tekemään poikkeuksen, jonka se tekikin. “Meistä oli tärkeää, että kaupunki tietää olevan olemassa liikkeitä, jotka eivät ole pelkästään kunnioitettavia, vaan jotka ovat myös kuunnelleet yhteisön tarpeita”, hän sanoi.

Alternative Herbal Health Services -apteekki kadun toisella puolella on hillitympi, sen ikkunaa koristaa värikäs luomukauppaa muistuttava kyltti. Kaupungin länsilaidalla sijaitsee Zen Healing Collective, jonka ikkunassa on jättimäinen neonhampunlehti. Viides kannabisliike, jonka kaupungin viranomaiset haluavat sulkea, Sunset Super Shop, on vertauskuvallisesti juuri oikealla paikalla Hustler Hollywoodin (seksiä) ja Whisky a Go Gon (rock’n'rollia) välissä.

Resultados que les obligan a ceder el mayor premio de la historia del golf.

En cuanto al campo, las semejanzas con Agusta han sido sólo aparentes en los greenes. Rápidos y de indescifrables caídas están causando grandes quebraderos de cabeza a los jugadores, que embocan en muchas ocasiones tras un tripateo. Entre ellos, el joven McIlroy que después de comenzar los primeros nueve hoyos con menos cinco ha cedido el ritmo y el liderato del torneo firmando un calamitoso bogey cuando tiraba para embocar el birdie.

Today on Baby A and my walk into Westwood village, a woman gave me two pearl necklaces: one for me and one for me to give to someone I love. What was the catch? None.

The necklaces were compliments of Dogeared Jewels and Gifts. Basically, they want to send “good energy into the world through personal and positive gifts.” The necklaces are small pearls with cards discussing beauty and love. I’ll be giving both of my necklaces away since Baby a will rip them from my neck. the one of beauty to my friend and neighbor Cy for being such a wonderful friend over the years and the one of love to my mom.

Shameless promotion of Tod's latest book

Saturday I went to hear Tod Goldberg read from and discuss his latest collection of short stories, Other Resort Cities at the Mystery Bookstore in Westwood. (It’s a fabulous independent bookseller. I highly recommend checking them out.)

When I can I try to go to Tod’s signings. Not because I have known him for most of my life (we went to high school and college together), but because Tod reminds me about my role as a writer. Specifically, that it is my job not just to inform but to tell stories (Duh).

Here’s the thing: I’m a health journalist and I mostly write articles that tell people to do things to improve theirs through diet and exercise. It’s easy to forget while combing through research to find tips you can use that I, too, have stories to tell.

I do enjoy seeing my old friend and listening to his stories about people who know. However, it is the way that Tod renews my writing spirit, despite his use of the F-word for emphasis.

It is eerily quiet. There’s parking. I’m in Westwood, right? I walk across Wilshire Boulevard and I’m the only person in the crosswalk. It’s Monday, isn’t it?

I turn down Broxton and begin walking to my Starbucks—the one that knows my drink and Baby A’s name—and hear the buzz of restlessness.

There are thousands in the village awaiting the premier of the latest Twilight film, New Moon. Some started camping out on Thursday, others joined them on Friday, by Saturday the line of tents covered a couple of blocks, and last night, Westwood’s sidewalks surrounding the Bruin theater looked like a tent city. Personally, I don’t understand this fanaticism.

As I stood in line for my coffee, I  overheard the group of people behind me discuss whether they’ll be waiting 6 or 7 hours for the stars to appear on the red carpet (Yes, this line was to look at the parade of stars on the red carpet. Not even to SEE the movie.) and whether they should have In N’ Out Burger for lunch or go straight to Diddy Reese for dessert. All of this sounded good to me and it isn’t because cheeseburgers and cookies are my thing (They’re not). The influx of star-gazing women brings money (hopefully) to my neighborhood—one that despite its close proximity to UCLA has struggled in the past.

So, welcome Twilight followers. Please drink lots of coffee (you can take your pick from Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Perfectto, Peets), and eat lots of donuts (Stan’s), cookies (Diddy Reese), sandwiches (Sandbags) and the plethora of other food offerings in the village. You have lots of time to kill, might as well enjoy all that Westwood Village has to offer.

Susannah POCOCK is my 3x great-grandmother, and her claim to fame is that she is the only one of my ancestors for which I have been unable trace a set of parents.

The purpose of this post is to put out the known facts about Susannah POCOCK in the hope that someone somewhere knows who here parents were, or that someone has an idea where to go next.

Although I am using the christian name Susannah, she has also been recorded under the christian name Susan and Susanna, although Susannah has been most commonly used.

The earliest reference I have to Susannah is her marriage in New Alresford, Hampshire on the 16th January 1832 to William MITCHELL. Both were living in the parish of New Alresford at the time, William was a bachelor and Susannah was a spinster.

The two witnesses at the marriage were Ann WESTWOOD and John LOCKETT. William MITCHELL’s mother’s maiden name was LOCKETT, so I believe that John LOCKETT was almost certainly a relative of William. Ann WESTWOOD was probably Ann LOCKETT who married Richard WESTWOOD in January 1816, so again probably another relative from the MITCHELL side.

Susannah appears in six census returns from 1841 to 1891, in Exton, Hampshire. The 1841 census information is not as precise as later years, because of the rounding of the individual’s age and the question asked about the place of birth. However the later years do provide more useful data.

*her actual age could have been anywhere between 30 years and 34 years.

All this data (with the exception of the 1861 census) seems to indicate a birth year of around 1807-09 and almost certainly in the parish of Micheldever.

According to the GRO Death Index Susannah died in Q2 1898 in Droxfield Registration District aged 90, pointing to a birth year around 1808. She was buried on the 28th April 1898 at Exton, Hampshire. The entry in the burial register gives her age as 90 years, so once again giving a birth year around 1808.

So all this data points to the fact that Susannah POCOCK was born in Micheldever, Hampshire around 1808. The problem is that there is no record of a baptism in Micheldever for Susannah POCOCK around that time. In fact there is no Susannah POCOCK baptism anywhere in Hampshire around that time. Without a baptism record I am unlikely to find out who her parents were.

The Hampshire Genealogical Society (HGS) Baptism Index only records the baptism of two Susannah POCOCKs, one in 1785 and another in 1827. There don’t appear to have been any POCOCK baptisms in Micheldever during the years covered by the index.

The HGS Baptism Index only includes Church of England baptisms, so there is the possibility that Susannah’s parents may have been non-conformists, but there was no non-conformist chapel in Micheldever around that time. If they were non-conformists then they could have worshipped almost anywhere in the county.

So where does this leave me, I have three other leads to explore, which I will detail over the next few days. It is probably worth me following up the names of the witnesses at the marriage of William and Susannah, to prove that they were both on the MITCHELL side of the family.

It might also be worth searching the registers of all non-conformist chapels close to Micheldever and then gradually working further out. Also there is a possibility that the baptism in 1827 could have been a late baptism for my Susannah, so I should try and rule that one out of the equation as well.

If anyone has any other suggestions then please let me know, all suggestions are welcomed, although there are very few avenues that I haven’t already explored.
