Alternate characters are an interesting topic: controlling two avatars at once can be obscenely diff

Alternate characters are an interesting topic: controlling two avatars at once can be obscenely difficult with some games (in Halo, trying to drive a warthog with my feet on one controller while firing with my hands on a second….didn’t work out too well). In WoW, most tasks went one of three ways: either you killed the dude trying to kill you, he killed you instantly, or he killed you after a long battle and you came back and managed to kill him by pressing the right buttons at the right times. Controlling one character with any degree of control took skill, and two characters at once when each one required a different button to be pressed depending on the situation every 1.5 seconds was an experience in frustration. Not that I couldn’t get it to work, but it was just annoying.

Eve continues to set itself away from other MMOs with an almost reliance on alts. Living in a WH with only contracts to go on to work out market prices, or even living in nullsec or having a really low security rating nigh demands having alts that can check the market for you, and then there’s the matter of convenience.

When I just started mining, apparently I was so pathetic that no-one even bothered to steal from my can of veldspar. But as I progressed to mining barge, can flippers ceased to be someone to muse upon as a dude whined in local and started becoming a very irritating problem. I was wary to let one can or more float in space before I brought my hauler out, which was a pain, especially when I got killed by a battle badger while trying to re-ninja my ore.

Here’s the strategy I finally figured out: When someone flips you, dock immediately. get your hauler out, warp to the cans. Pick a celestial at random. maneuver your hauler so that the can is directly between you and the celestial. Engage warp without aligning. as your ship lines up with the planet or whatever, open your ninjaed can and make ready. Half a second before your ship reaches 75% speed, drag as much ore as you can into your cargo. The moment your ship hits 75%, it should shoot off like a rocket and you’ll have saved one hauler load of ore. Hide in a station for 15 minutes, come out, start mining in a different system.

After a few weeks of this I was fast running out of throat lozenges for after cursing at flippers and made an alt using the buddy system. My slim justification to myself that since the activation fee was 20 bucks, I’d only have to pay 4 extra bucks once to never have can flipping problems ever again. I started the alt, closed out of all the tutorials immediately and trained gallente industry V.

Suddenly, flippers were a thing of the past. Any ore I had mined went immidiately to the station with no loss in productivity, and Eve was fun again. The hauler account stayed with me, hauling for corp ops and regular ops, following me into nullsec and hauling there; then coming to WH space with me.

Having two accounts in eve is different from two accounts anywhere else because of the sheer utility of having two separate persona for you. One can scout for the other, rep for the other, mine for the other, shoot for the other, and with Eves auto-repeat managing both of them is fairly intuitive.

Awkwardly, I’ve accidentally left two alts in WHs we left and had to pod them both >.<

I think this topic has been covered by someone else already, but the psychological experience of an MMO is essentially obtaining what others don’t have. Whether it’s gold, ISK, a battleaxe bigger than yourself, a navy domi, faction fit mauraders or every single damn item in the game, everyone wants more than everyone else in order to say “look at me, I’m awesome”.

Since training an alt requires you to stop training on your main, this goes against the average MMOer instints of being better than everyone else, making the thought of stopping training on your main nigh unbearable. So, making an alt account is a pretty easy step for most committed players, which is why I now have an orca pilot, another WH goer has two hulk accounts and a third has two with a third still training.

Assuming you can either provide the 30 bucks a month or 600 mil a month, a second account will make your Eve experience significantly easier.

Oh, and the nullsec dude apparently multiboxes four hulks in his infinite ABC nullsec system.

Fly safe.

Fly safe.

Also, arguing with yourself in front of new guys in the corp channel is hilarious.

It was another cold, black day.

That’s what he would be saying, if the tachyon lasers of an Amarrian dreadnought weren’t trying to crack their shields like an egg.
The lasers pulsed again and he heard muffled cursing from below him as the mechanic added more duct tape or repair paste to their flickering shield emitters. How the dread had found them, he’d never know.
The gigantic asteroid they had been mining for the better part of a week had finally collapsed, its infrastructure ruined, and they had been celebrating the occasion with ice cold quafe when the first warning lights started blinking and we were informed that our temporary little hideaway was under fire from a ship bigger and more expensive than anything they owned, excluding the station itself.
The Amarrian ship had come out of nowhere, with no escort, raising the question on how the bastard had survived this long, but an unescorted Dreadnought was still more than enough damage for five miners huddled in a small station. The pilot cursed again at the financial backer for this expedition, lamenting their meager funds that only allowed for two cruise missile launchers, both of which were easily subdued by the punishing force being brought to bear.
Suddenly, the mechanic’s cursing stopped, a fact which somehow worried the miner more than the cursing. He glanced out the viewport and couldn’t help but notice a distinct lack of lasery death spewing at them. In confusion, he looked around the bleak void beyond the shield bubble, wondering what had caused the zealot bastard to cease his crusade for the beautification of the wormhole or whatever the hell the bastard had been talking about before they jammed his radio, an act that had probably not improved the circumstances.
His eyes suddenly caught a flash of black on black, a shadow moving within a shadow. Squinting, the shadow’s frame came into view from the light of the firey planet they had anchored the station at.
It was cruiser class, that much he was certain of, but all the ships he had heard about as a kid looked nothing like this one. It looked almost… insectual, with a curved back of layered metal and a design that made any viewer feel uneased.
The dreadnought pilot certainly seemed uneased, although it was hard to tell, seeing as the thing hadn’t moved in the last seven minutes. The shadow that was not a shadow suddenly lit its engines, accelerating to speeds that seemed god-like to the veteran pilots of mining barges, settling into a tight orbit around the Amarr ship.
Autocannons and missiles rained down on the behemoth, and more ships appeared around it as ships of Minmatar design swarmed in and around the golden monster. The Amarr bastard gave a dying scream, or would have if the jamming signal the mechanic had rigged hadn’t completly shut down his outward brosdcasts. The Dreadnought exploded, a blinding white light against the black darkness of space, and when the pilot could see again, each ship, each one looking like the result of an explosion in various girder factories, had aligned themselves to the station.
A blinking light on a console near him indicated that one of their rescuers wanted a talk. Hastily screaming at the mechanic to shut the jam off, just in case, he shakily opened an audio link. A gravely tone came forward.
“This is Colonel Roc Wieler, current leader of the Tribal Liberation Force’s Wormhole Exploration Squad. You have five minutes EXACTLY before we leave this system and by that time I expect every Quafe can and cigarette you have in that floating pile of Caldari crap in a canister outside your shields. Some of us have been in this dead-end corner of space for a very, very long time and the cigs ran dry weeks ago, leaving us with very, very twitchy fingers over our fire controls. Do I make myself PERFECTLY clear?”.
After a very hasty “sir yessir”, said faster than the miner had ever heard himself speak, their remaining cans of Quafe and month supply of cigarettes was loaded into their shuttle and left at the metaphorical feet of the fleet that still looked like a floating junkyard to the miner. The comms crackled to life again.
“Ahhhhh….. that’s the stuff. Civvies, I don’t know how the hell you got here, how the hell you’ve survived this long, but I sure as hell don’t care. Now, before we take our leave, is there anything else you’d like to say to us? Perhaps along the lines of a ‘Thank you’?”.
The words flew past his lips, and at the time it seemed customary to utter the phrase “Merry Christmas”. The sudden silence of the comms seemed to speak differently, though. after an eternity all of thirty seconds, the comms cracked to life for a third time.
“The only, I repeat, ONLY reason that I’m not going to order the good men and women with me to burn through your shields and explain to you how much of a pile of shit that belief is is because fully half of those men and women are enjoying the first smoke they’ve had in weeks. Now, if you and your little deity wouldn’t MIND, we will take our leave. Unless you’ve got some sort of cross you’d like to throw at us?”
After fifteen seconds of shaking his head, the miner remembered that the chat was audio only, and a stuttery “Sir, nosir”, was beamed across the void as the ships vanished in all directions as quickly as they had come.

What gets your attention? What elicits from you approval or praise for another? What do you commend

What gets your attention? What elicits from you approval or praise for another? What do you commend in others?

I think that I tend to appreciate and express appreciation for the things I see in others that I have come to value. If I long to live frugally, I applaud another’s ability to maintain a budget and count pennies well. If raising kids well matters to me, I will sit up and take notice when others’ children are well-behaved and gracious and kind.

So, what does catch your attention? What do you commend? That will tell others–and clarify for yourself–what you value most.

I see this idea in Paul’s writings. In a previous post I reflected on Paul’s presentation of Timothy and Epaphroditus as two brothers who were, in fact, living with “this attitude which was . . . in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). It might seem that to live like Jesus is unattainable, but Paul offers tangible and real examples in two men that the Philippians knew. And what is worth noting are the things he commends.

I’m just thinking about Timothy, today. There’s enough there to serve as food for thought. Paul notes:

He is genuinely concerned for the welfare of others (Philippians 4:20).

He intentionally pursues Jesus’ agenda and not his own (Philippians 4:21).

He has lived consistently enough to have “proven worth” (Philippians 4:22).

Paul commends these things because they are what Paul, himself, values. And Paul values these things because they are the kinds of things that enable someone–in this case, Timothy–to share in Jesus’ life. I wonder if Paul were writing about me whether he could or would say such things.

This morning I was talking with a good friend about how we live out this life with Jesus and how easy it is to pull back from genuinely giving ourselves in compassionate care for others. That’s just so . . . messy! To really care for another will lead to involving myself in their struggles, getting under their load, setting aside my rationalizations as to why I am too busy to partner with them in their need. In short, to really care would move me out of my complacency and self-seeking and draw me into their lives. So, I am not sure that Paul would commend me for genuinely caring for others. I care conditionally.

But I do want–often, occasionally, sometimes–to live for Jesus. I am interested in the things He values and prioritizes . . . some times, most of the time, on my good days. But as I think about that, I tend to give myself to the pursuit of Jesus’ agenda when it just happens to coincide with my own agenda. That is, I am glad to give myself to what Jesus wants as long as I have pre-qualified what He wants as something that falls in line with what I already have decided I want. So, I am not sure Paul would commend me for diligently seeking after what Jesus wants. I seek self-servingly.

And the result is that I have a somewhat mixed track record; it’s not that there is no evidence of the work of grace in my life. I think that, by His doing, there are things in me and in my life that are evidence of His presence. But “proven worth”? That might be a bit iffy. I am sporadic; I move forward in this life in a jerky, spasmodic way. And I think that has a tendency to undermine the “proven-ness;” the lack of consistency raises questions about what really has been “proven.” So, I am not sure Paul would commend me for my evident and settled worth. I meander.

Well, what then? Having seen Paul’s picture of Timothy and heard his commendation, what should I do? Throw up my hands and confess that I am not a Timothy (nor a Paul . . . nor am I seemingly very good at living like Jesus)? I don’t think that is what Paul intended (nor the Spirit intended) for either the Philippians or for us.

I think the commendation of Timothy is a way of holding out to us an invitation. Knowing that God is at work in us to bring to completion what he has started (Philippians 1:6; 2:12-13), Paul is just reminding us of where God is taking us.

He is drawing us, by grace and through the Spirit and because of Jesus, into a life of genuine compassionate care for others. And God is drawing us, by grace and through the Spirit and because of Jesus, into a life that is purposefully and fully caught up with what is at the center of Jesus’ own life. And God is drawing us, by grace and through the Spirit and because of Jesus, into a consistency and steadfastness that we will grow more and more to give evidence of his work in us.

That is what God is doing. And that is commendable!

CNN Politics reports: “President Obama is sending 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan but

CNN Politics reports:

“President Obama is sending 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan but plans to conclude the war and withdraw most U.S. soldiers within three years, senior administration officials.”

Amazing the art of compromise and doing many things at once. You please the hawks on the right with an almost-requested surge, and woo the left and sceptics with an it’s-all-soon-over decision. But it’s also an act of perplexing populism. You seemingly appease all demands, but how will it work on the ground? Fighting and slowly pulling out at once?

It’s tempting to guess that terms like “success” and “accomplishment” will be lulled into some woolen talk about “stable country” and “democratic and self-sustained nationstate” – which could be watered down by the 2012 elections. It might be smart and efficient politics, but once again, there is something missing here, some want of a president who takes a clear stand and makes a real choice. Or it might just be the old habits of “makenomistake” kind of presidencies. “Whatever works” could be just fine, after all.

Dominion has me worried, not on how nullsec will turn into ratting, but on how it will affect nullse

Dominion has me worried, not on how nullsec will turn into ratting, but on how it will affect nullsec mining. As I said earlier, WH space mining is arguably the riskiest and profitable way to make isk in eve. It’s balanced that way, because after you mine the ore while looking over your shoulder every few seconds to make sure a loki isn’t behind you, you have to either compress or refine the ore, then get it out of the WH itself which usually equates to pulling teeth while very carefully watching local and the directional as you go through C2s, C3s and nullsecs. Getting supplies into the WH is a hassle, seeing as you need to haul any large amount of equipment in an industrial, and unless you have the isk/time invested in a covops blockade runners, gate camps are a pain. On that note, losing 100 mil to a lowsec gatecamp while holding 6000 m3 has persuaded me to upgrade from my faithful, infinitely customizable iteron mark V to a Viator which, had I been smart enough to use it previously, wouldn’t have lost me a total of 200 mil worth of modules over the last month. Anyway, dominion. The news that nullsec will be a lot more fluid and bigger cartels, sorry, alliances will consolidate their presence and let new corps in sounds good on paper, and it probably is for the new players, get a taste of nullsec and all it’s joys and woes, but the news on grav sites scares me. Quoting a recent devBlog Ore Prospecting Arrays These are hidden asteroid belts and you get one site guaranteed for every level of upgrade to a maximum of five. These are not the typical hidden belts though. If you’ve ever been into wormhole space and seen some of the riches there, then you have an idea of what to expect. Within these hidden belts reside mythical beasts such as ‘King Arkonor’ and many of his closest friends. These sites will re-spawn every downtime, so even if you do not mine out every rock, there will be fresh ones waiting for you the next day. In the WH space I like to say I live in, the roids are, coining a phrase, fuggin monsterously huge. Some unforeseen circumstances arose and it was just me in my hulk (http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/31243-WH-ecm-hulk.html), my alt in a hauler, and an orca pilot who had fallen asleep in the pos a few hours ago. Timing myself, in about 7 hours of sitting their suspended between being scared and being bored out of my skull, I mined about 55,000 units of bist and the roid I was working on did not die. I have no head for the market, mostly because a good friend manages the selling of the refined ore, but i’m gonna assume that 880,000 m3 of nullsec ore is worth a hella lot. The immense wealth I am sitting on is still at risk, we could get bubbled getting it back to jita, hauling it out through connecting WHs and nullsec, and then a jita gank. But that’s what makes this whole lovely world balanced. If we wanted titanium, we’d mine in highsec for hours and make 3 mil per jetcan instead of the lovely 15 mil per jetcan nullsec ores bring. But in highsec you have local and there arnt people activley seeking your murder. Except goons or hulkageddon or some dude in a destroyer killing you and still making enough isk to buy a new destroyer and do it all again. Anyway, its all a beautiful graph of risk verses profit. I feel that nullsec changes are going to take that graph and break it over it’s knee. In friendly nullsec, which is where miners would usually go, I’d assume, there is very little risk. Admitted, you can’t AFK mine, but you’ve got local and you’ve marked every space-tree for 5 systems in every direction. If someone who wants you dead even thinks about scanning you out and killing you, you have about 5 minutes notice to warp out and maybe go back and get the jetcans too. This safety while still getting nice lowsec ores and the occasional nullsec, depending on how deep you are, is again balanced by you having fought tooth and nail for every damn inch and someone could bring in a fleet of dreads at any second and kill everything you’ve ever worked for. If I’m reading this change correctly, then for every system you control and upgrade, you’ll be able to get up to five very, very rich belts full of ABC, which can then be mined at much less risk than WH mining, which then can be hauled out through friendly nullsecs and sold, or used to build more dreads that can be used to scare the hell out of your neighbors or whatever. Bottom line, I expect the ABC market to start lowering prices or for everyone and their dog who can mine in nullsec to have enough ships to use them as torpedo ammo. So, in scenario one, the bottom falls out of the ABCs and WH miners start getting richer slower and new corps start getting money faster. Scenario 2, the market holds and everyone builds more blobs with the influx and there’s more Internet spaceship fighting hurray. Taking a step back, there’s a chance that this will all just end up with happier new corps and more ships to bash against each other, but there’s also a chance that things could go downhill.

Betyg: 4

The White House Office of National AIDS Policy will be holding an event for the Bay Area community to discuss strategy and policy concerns in dealing with HIV and AIDS in the United States. The event will be held Sunday, November 1st, at Berkeley High School, although the Berkeley school district “is not directly involved” with the planning or organization of the meeting.

The Daily Californian discussed the upcoming event:

The White House Office of National AIDS Policy selected the high school as one of 14 forum sites nation-wide because of its accessibility and the 600-person capacity of its auditorium, said Shin Inouye, White House director of specialty media, in an e-mail… The importance of holding a discussion in Berkeley is due in part to the Bay Area’s high number of HIV cases. “The Bay Area has been an epicenter of the HIV epidemic in the United States,” Inouye said.

Any one who has ever spent any extended amount of time with children knows that if you put something in front of them and tell them not to do it, the “not to do thing” becomes enticing. So, the best thing to do is not to give credence to something and just ignore it.
That is exactly what the White House has not done in their battle with Fox News Channel. It has raised the level of rancor higher than it should be.
The White House hasn’t asked my advice but I will give it here:

Ignore your issues with Fox News Channel unless something that’s being reported on a news segment is wrong. Ignore pretty much everything that is being said on the opinion side as it is just opinion. The White House does not make a habit of addressing the various protests in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue so why should it spend valuable time and energy addressing opinion shows? — By addressing your beefs with talk radio and talk television shows that you think are slanted against you, you just give them more and more legitimacy.

I have been working for Fox News as a confirmed liberal contributor for twelve years.
I know from the inside of the Fox News Channel operation that they are clear about the dividing line between reporting and opinion. They don’t like to mix the work of reporters and the show hosts nor should they. I sit at the White House with Fox’s White House reporters and they have asked the same questions as other reporters — both during the Bush administration and the Obama administration.

As a liberal commentator on Fox News Channel I have never been told what to say and have only been asked to restrain myself once in twelve years. And when was that? — It was on the day that Michael Jackson died and the producer asked me to keep my negative views to myself till some time had passed. That’s a concern I can respect. They welcome my thoughts and views and they would welcome President Obama’s views as well.

The president needs to reach out to all Americans — even the ones who completely disagree with him. His communication staff should suggest he do interviews with Fox News Channel and let his message be heard directly by Americans who did not vote for him or don’t like his polices. The White House should also know their numbers. One study done by an independent media group found that almost a third of Fox’s viewers were Democrats and independents.

The Obama communications strategy needs to let the criticism of the president and the administration roll off their back. It’s a mistake to spend valuable communications capital on upping the ante and continuing the fight. What you resist persists.

I have found my answer to the question of why the White house and BHO administration doesn’t l

I have found my answer to the question of why the White house and BHO administration doesn’t like FOX NEWS.

Raum (“dead fish”) Emmanuel states that FNC isn’t a news organization because they have “perspective”!! My goodness, don’t all news channels have a perspective on the news??

I know that FNC brings out the unpleasant associations in the WH, and that is part of the reason they say it has “perspective”. The WH is trying to make FNC sound like a fly by night organization that doesn’t do the background work on their pieces.

I do admit that Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck have lot’s of “perspective” int heir hour long programs, but, they actually do background research to find the information that the WH wishes they didn’t dig for.

And therein lies the problem. The WH doesn’t like the tough stuff being brought up. You know, the stuff like what is actually in the health care bill, what’s actually in the stimulus package, personal information on WH staff, you know, stuff like that. Information and questions that actually challenge what the President is doing. You know, with all his transparency and accountability. Has he actually been transparent and accountable for anything in the 10 months he’s been in office?? Now from my perspective.

So I guess I found out the answer to my question about why the WH hates FNC. The WH really doesn’t want a challenge and they don’t want to answer real questions and they don’t want the American citizens to know what is going on.

It’s funny that someone is watching FNC. The ratings are sky high and continue to climb. A recent poll even showed that half the audience watching the non legit channel are democrats and independents.

Here is what Raum has to say about FNC.

In his “State of the Union” interview with CNN’s John King, Emanuel said, “It’s not a news organization so much as it has a perspective.”

Maybe more importantly, Emanuel told King that the White House doesn’t want other news outlets to emulate Fox because the cabler isn’t offering “both sides’ sense of a valued opinion” (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript, h/t NBer Melody):

RAHM EMANUEL, WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF: No, it’s not so much a conflict with Fox News. But, unlike I suppose the way to look at it, and the way we, the President looks at it, we look at it is it’s not a news organization so much as it has a perspective. And that’s a different take. And more importantly is not have the CNN’s and the others in the world basically be led and following Fox as if that what they’re trying to do is a legitimate news organization in the sense of both sides’ sense of a valued opinion.

So, any media outlet that has a perspective isn’t a news organization?

Using that guideline, doesn’t it rule EVERY entity that offers opinion and commentary with a decided slant — which is virtually every media group in America — out as a news organization?

As the likely answer is “Yes,” Emanuel unwittingly made the case that there aren’t ANY real news organizations in America anymore, a contention I wouldn’t disagree with.

Yet, maybe most important was Emanuel’s last line concerning the White House discouraging “the CNN’s and the others in the world” from being “led and following Fox as if that what they’re trying to do is a legitimate news organization in the sense of both sides’ sense of a valued opinion.”

Both sides’ sense of a valued opinion? Who’s to determine that: the White House or the public?

Right now, Fox News is destroying its competition as far as ratings. Most nights Fox gets more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined.

As such, at the present time, more people value Fox’s opinion than CNN’s and MSNBC’s.

With this in mind, Emanuel is basically saying the White House has a better understanding of what represents “valued opinion” than the people do.

Even scarier, the Administration doesn’t want other news outlets to offer opinions being presented by Fox despite how in demand those opinions are given that network’s dominance in the ratings.

Reading between the lines, Emanuel basically admitted the White House motives are not only to discredit Fox, but also to discourage other news outlets from offering similar opinions — aka conservative views

Be afraid, America. Be very afraid.

Someone please explain to me why the extreme left thinks FOX NEWS is entertainment??

Just look at some of the stories that the other cable news has covered. I mean, CNN doing a FACT check on a SNL skit?? That’s news???

I think the WH and extreme left are afraid of FOX NEWS exposing all the thugs in the current administrations cabinet and they don’t like being called on it! And then when they are called out on a cabinet member or czar, they blame it on racism!!!

How is that working out for them?? I mean what president likes being called out on his cabinet members??

Yet they are upset with a news organization that is actually telling the truth, yet they want to squash it and make FOX NEWS seem illegitimate.

I have news for them all. Someone is watching FOX NEWS!!

Unlike CNN or PMSNBC. Their ratings are in the toilet and they are all just extended arms of the WH machine.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Betyg: 3
