Is it OK to swim with whales and dolphins?

Travel companies in many countries offer the chance to get up close to whales and dolphins by swimming alongside them in the sea. But there is growing concern that in some areas heavily targeted by commercial swim tours, there may be a long-term impact on the health and wellbeing of the animals.

According to Julian Matthews of Discovery Initiatives (discoveryinitiatives.co.uk), which runs a Swim with Killer Whales trip in Norway, it depends on how the trip is managed: “The trip has to be run in small numbers, there have to proper permits in place for boat handlers and the frequency of the tours has to be carefully monitored; above all there has to be an acceptance that it is a privilege not a right to be with the animals.”

However, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (0870 8700027, wdcs.org), which runs its own whale-watching holidays, has decided to not include swim tours on its holidays. It recommends only boat-based holidays, with a naturalist on board and a boat handler who has taken one of the voluntary codes of conduct, such as the Dolphin Space program (dolphinspace.org), or the WiSe (Wildlife Safe) scheme (wisescheme.org).

We broke up the long journey from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires with a brief stop in Puerto Pirámides for some whale watching.  Located 77km from Puerto Madryn on the Valdés Peninsula and 25km past the entrance to the reserve, this small, sandy seaside town is the peninsula’s only sizeable settlement and the departure point for whale watching excursions aboard small boats.  Declared a Unesco Natural Heritage of Humanity site in 1999, the Valdés Peninsula is teeming with wildlife including sea lions, elephant seals, southern right whales, dolphins, Magellanic penguins and even the occasional orca.  Three kilometers outside of town is a clifftop lookout point where whales can be watched from shore, although taking one of the popular boat tours offers more close-up views.   Whale watching season runs from June through December when large numbers of southern right whales arrive to complete their breeding cycle.  In fact, so many whales gather in these waters that in-season it’s just about guaranteed that you’ll spot at least a few.  This young southern right whale came right up to the side of our boat!

Der große Tag. Mein erstes Mal. Wale! Hab direkt vom Hostel in Puerto Madryn (bin im El Gualicho, empfehlenswert) die TOur gebucht einmal quer über die Peninsula Valdez incl. Whale Watching. Es regent. Den ganzen verd. Tag. Dazu muss man wissen, dass das hier ein semi-desierto ist und Regen ungefähr so wahrscheinlich wie in Deutschland Sonne… Aber egal, auch der Regen konnte den Tag nicht verderben.  Mit dem Boot sind wir aufs Meer rausgefahren (eingewickelt in gelbe Plastikponchos und mit Schwimmwesten, wie rießen Marshmallows) Es war wirklich unglaublich, so viel hatte ich nicht erwartet. Die Wale sind immer wieder ganz dicht am Boot aufgetaucht, Fluke, Fontäne, Mama mit Baby, alles was das Herz begehrt.  Gigantisch. Herzklopfen. Hui.

Dann gings weiter zu den Seeelephanten und ein weiterer Stopp bei den Pinguinen. Alles ganz nah. Und alles in strömendem Regen. Die Erkältung wird sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt haben!

The drive itself from Sydney down our Southern Coastline is stunning. Taking the coastal road via Stanwell Tops is a great start and if you are taking it slowly then spend the morning at SYMBIO WILDLIFE GARDENS. Symbio is fantastic as it has Australia’s most loved Native Animals and you can get right up close and personal with them, cuddling a Koala and feeding a Kangaroo. You can then squeeze in an afternoon of Hang gliding from Stanwell Tops down to the beach at Stanwell Park below, or simply grab an ice cream and watch others give it a go.

Next stop is Kiama. First driving past the gorgeous Bombo beach and through some terrific countryside and catching a glimpse of Australia’s diverse natural environments. Kiama has some great little restaurants and cafes by the sea where you can relax and watch the Pelicans soar in. A visit to the Terrace shops for cute gifts and some old fashioned lollies is a must. Before you head on, take a drive up to the blow hole and Lighthouse on the point- this is always a great thrill for tourists and something that is never boring.

Back in the car and its back to the views of the countryside and winding coastal roads with the ever changing scenery to the right at all times. This drive can be done all in one day or take your time and enjoy the little towns along the way. Berry is the perfect place to put up your feet and rest for the night. Whether it’s camping near the 7 mile beach, keeping it cosy in a little B& B or pulling up to a caravan park, you will find all sorts of accommodation here. Great antique shops, boutique fashion stores and homely food will keep you busy when wandering around this lovely little town. The opal store and Chocolate Factory are two of the best attractions, so make sure you’ve got some cash on you.

The drive then continues down quite straight towards Nowra from here. You will reach the Shoalhaven area and pass many fruit picking spots and vineyards (depending on the season) as well as little beach suburbs. I would suggest renting a house for a night in Collalla Bay, a little further then Nowra or continuing closer to Jervis Bay, Huskisson or Vincentia. Huskisson offers wonderful fishing spots and great whale and dolphin watching cruises. Jervis Bay Caravan Park puts you right out there in the middle of nature with Kangaroos bounding up to your cabin door and always stopping by for a pet. Nearby is also the Valhalla Horse Riding Centre which will take guests through the bush on 1-3 hour guided tours. A brilliant way to see Australia’s Natural beauty.

Whale Watch at Telegraph Cove

When the orcas come back to inside waters in late spring, as they have for generations. They bring continuity to the lives of Vancouver Islanders.  I feel a certain kinship with these killer whales, knowing that my children have grown up on this coast with the offspring of orcas I knew as a youngster.

The expoosive chuff of water and air erupting from the blowholes of killer whales breaking the surface en masse is a natural thrill like no other.  The orcas’ annual return bring visitors from around the world to Telegraph cover a small boardwalk village on northern Vancouver island.

Jim Borrowman of Stubbs Island Whale Watching c0-founded B.C’s whale watching industry in Telegraph Cove in 1980/  His boat operations take visitors out on Johnstone Strait, where they may see the whales spy-hopping or breaching, Onbard naturalists explain that the eerie orca vocalizations braaoadcast through a hydrophone are the exclusive language of particular pods.  Each outing is a natural history lesson delivered in the guise of entertainment.  And with the lesson comes a message: these resident orcas subsist primarily on Chinook salmon, and worldwide climate change is diminishing their prey.  It is Borrowman’s hope that his international clients take home a greater appreciation of how human lifestyles anywhere in the world can affect the survival of orcas on B.C’s coast.

We wake up to the “rude” alarms of our iPhones at 8:00. Not sure what it is but we feel very tired. Maybe it’s the 3hrs time difference. We grab quick breakfast and head to the harbour. We catch the 333 bus on the Bondi Rd. As we get off in Sydney harbor we realize that the Darling harbour where we are to board the boat is still good 20min walk away. We wave down a taxi and after some 10min and AUD 15,- we get out – on the other side of the harbour. We sprint over the small bridge and board the speed boat (3×300hp) on time. Passing under the Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera we make our way to the ocean across from Manly Beach. Unfortunately our excitement fades away as the time passes and there is no sign of whales. We join the bigger boat of the same company and eventually we see a whale to take a breath but that’s it. Our time is up and we have to head back. Back in the harbor we get a voucher for free “second try”. Not perfect but still nice. Then we go and eat our disappointment away in chocolate heaven – Lindt chocolate cafe. It takes us 10mim to decide which chocolates and cakes made out of Lindt chocolate we pass on

Ludo calls us and swings by with a color map print out to show us what to do and see when back from our second “try” at the whales. We walk back and “cash in” our vouchers. After a short while we board the boat and hope for more luck this time. Well we do get to see them surfacing for air but no fins or breaching the water, so the “hunt” is still on. Next stop will be Kaikura in NZ. What we do get however is a massive lightning storm all around us. Having survived it, I can say it was a thrill. One lightning struck so close to the boat that the thunder almost riped my pants. If nothing else we got to see the whales from a closer distance and riding the swell was also a lot of fun.

Back in the Darling harbor we make our way to Town hall and the Sydney Apple store (of course) where I manage to initiate a download of app updates and an album. This, results in complete depletion of my credit the minute we leave the Apple wifi. I am a moron, indeed. From there we make our way (through another Roxy shop) to Bondi Junction (Roxy & Quiksilver stores) and end up having pretty good dinner with a spectacular view of Sydney. Then we call Ludo, go pick up the keys from his place and ride back very tired after a full day. Now we just need to pack up and get ready for New Zealand tomorrow.

Pilot Whales socializing off the shores of Cape Breton Island

Pilot whales are very social, and are often found in groups of 20 to 90 pods. They swim, breed and eat as a group. Some pilot whales show off and spy hop. They basically stick half of their bodies out of the water, vertically, almost like break dancing. Can you spy hop? Many animals spy hop, not just this big guy. Wolves all need to do this, so they can see their surroundings.

Pilot whales look like black dolphins with a white or light grey anchor-shaped patch on its bottom surface. They have rounded heads with a very small beak. The male’s head may protrude up to 4 inches over the lower jaw! Its body is long, allowing the whale to swim with ease, but very stocky and muscular. They look cute, but they can hold their ground.

Pilot whales are generally found in both the northern and southern hemisphere or in tropical water throughout the world. Short-finned pilot whales tend to chill out in the warmer water.

One of the privileges of organizing tours and being a tour guide is getting to do things like this. Ken and his team at Southern Right Charters are incredibly professional and knowledgeable about whales. I was blown away by how the whales and particularly the one in picture, almost seemed inquisitive of the boat. Swimming up to it and swimming around it. It was amazing to see how this huge (50 odd tons) creature can turn around in a short space as she swam around the boat. If my arm was longer I could have touched her.

My clients were blown away. A highlight of their trip to South Africa and a memory they will hold for a long time. My domain is the mountains and hiking, but this was a special experience that I recommend to anyone.

It must have been my week for whales. False Bay was full of them on Saturday, making the best of the good weather as I cycled past in my first attempt to start training for next years Argus Cycle Tour – a very slow start, but whale watching is a great excuse.

Yesterday, Dave Pidgeon asked where a visitor with only enough time for a day hike should set out to, from Seattle.  This is of course a very difficult question, and depends on the visitor’s taste, the time of year, and so on.  For anybody who loves the ocean, however, it’s hard to pick a better hike than The Dungeness Spit.

A spit ( or sand spit ) is a long, narrow sand bar stretching out into the water.  Essentially it’s caused by the waves pushing sand and other sediment around, but that won’t be on the test.  What matters is that The Dungeness Spit is North America’s longest, amounting to about 1.3 million square yards.  ( So says Wikipedia. )

From the Air

The spit is about a 5 mile hike in each direction, so a 10 mile round trip.  Along the mainland shore are cliffs so that the grandparents can have a short walk, without reaching the point of exhaustion, and in the water are many, many kayakers at every time of year.

I hiked this last in September, and saw a pod of gray whales swimming off shore.  At first there were columns of (what looked like) smoke rising up from the water, then overturned canoes.  These moved around the water, and it became obvious that right before each smoke stack rose up, a little “pfffft!” sound would emerge from the water.  Oh, how I wish I had been in a kayak then!

The spit is outside Sequim, pronounced Squim, on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  You’ll get the feeling that you’re standing in the middle of the end of the ocean, surrounded to the south by the majestic Olympic Mountains, and to the north by British Columbia.  Much as I hate the word, this landscape is truly epic.

From Seattle, you would take the ferry and then head north.  This Google Map will help put the area in perspective.

Although there is probably one more month to go before the end of the visits of Southern Right Whales  for this season, you may still want to go and see these huge animals. If you do  I would suggest that you book a boat cruise, Southern Right Cruises are excellent.

However if you get up early 6am! Take the coastal route to, a wonderful drive, if the wind is blowing you will often find that once you round the corner past Gordon’s Bay the wind will cease!

For a wonderful view of False day take a drive up the service road to the Steenbras water pump station.

Before you pass Betty’s Bay drive to the beach and have a look at the African Penguins, there are often more than at Boulders.

Pressing on take time out to visit the Herald Porter Botanical Gardens. There are two wonderful walks, Disa Kloof Trail, and Leopards Kloof Trail. Lovely waterfalls at both. If you started early enough you can have a fine English Breakfast at their restaurant.

After your whale visit, usually 2-3 hours, arrange for lunch at the Harbour Restaurant. The best seafood in town.

Drive back to Cape Town Via Hemmal en Aarde (Heaven and Earth). There is a stretch of dirt road but nothing the a sedan can’t handle if driven carefully.

Drop in at one of the vineyards for a wine tasting.

Drive through scenic farmlands and thence up Shaw’s Pass through to Caledon. And the finally down Sir Lowerys Pass.

What a wonderful days outing combining so many items.

Another great thing about Annapolis Royal is our proximity to the Bay of Fundy and all that it offers. One of those great offerings is Whale Watching – the Bay of Fundy is well known for its whales and about an hour down the road from Annapolis Royal, in Freeport and Brier Island, are a number of first class whale watching operators. They offer whale cruises throughout the summer months, and their very knowledgeable operators can provide you with lots of great information about the whales and other marine life you will encounter on your excursion.

I personally have been whale watching twice, and both times I was lucky enough to see several whales, humpbacks and right whales. While I did not witness the events captured in the following video, I would like to share it with you anyway – nature at its finest.

Zurück in Sydney machen wir erstmal nix, aber auch gar nix!

Nein so ganz stimmt das nun auch nicht.

Mit jeanette und manou fahren wir in die city und schauen uns die unglaublich beeindruckende oper an. Was ein prachtbauwerk. Hut ab vor dem dänen!

Sydney city ist eine unglaublich schöne stadt …. nicht beengend und durch die parks sehr grün. Da schönes wetter ist, gönnen wir uns sushi take away und picknicken im park dort treffen wir auch auf soeren der uns in seiner mittagspause besuchen kommt. Was ein leben! Could be worse!

Den rest der zeit (so ungefähr ne gute Woche) verbringen wir mit shoppen, sightseeing und nichtstun. Und haben ein wenig am leben unserer expats teil. Am wochenende gibt es bei der public bondi school immer nen markt wo wir auf gunters stand – noch nem ausgewanderten deutschen – in seinen balinesichen hängematten abhängen. Fast die ganze zeit begleitet uns schönstes wetter, um die 20 grad. Kalt wird’s nur wenn die sonne geht. Dann aber mal so richtig.

Ach ja, ein wenig Lonely Planet Bashing muss auch hier sein. Wir machen eine ein tag sightseeing tour, die wir gegen 18.30 uhr in darling harbour mit einem besuch des australian wildlife zoos, gleich neben dem aquarium, beenden wollen. Laut planet bis 22 uhr offen, letzter einlass um 21 uhr. Prima, noch zwei stunden zeit sich die vielen giftigen tiere anzuschauen, auf nem känguruh zu reiten und was weiss der gilb…leider stehen wir vor verschlossener tür. Der zoo schliesst um 18 uhr, letzter einlass um 17 uhr. Die information im lonely planet bezieht sich auf das aquarium. Tja, da wäre gründliche recherche hilfreich gewesen. Danke mal wieder lonely planet.

Am freitag, den 10.7 hat jeannette geburtstag. Soeren opfert sich als babysitter und sabine, paul und joachim führen jeannette aus. Paul und joachim haben vorher das programm in der oper gecheckt und wir haben glück. Megan washington, eine lokale folk / jazzsingerin gibt ein konzert. Für jeannette eine überraschung. Vorher lehren wir noch 2 flaschen sekt in einer bar vor der oper, mit blick auf city und harbour bridge. Sagten wir schon, dass es sich in sydney gut leben lässt? Das konzert ist in einem kleinen teil, die athmosphäre intim und persönlich. Es gefällt uns allen. Wer mal was von megan washington hören will: hier der LINK!

Nachdem wir während des konzerts weiter sekt getrunken haben, verlangt der körper nach dem konzert dringend nach nahrung. Also schnell zu nem italiener, mehr sekt, diesmal aber mit pizza und pasta. Frisch gestärkt geht’s weiter zu nem club / pub in den docks. Unser franzose ist ja jung und als partyhengst bekannt und kennt sich aus. Dort lassen wir den abend mit bier und jägerbomm (jägermeister mit red bull auf ex) ausklingen. Es ist grossartig, wir denken die bilder sprechen für sich. Gegen 3 uhr morgens sind wir zurück in bondi… paul entdeckt nicht nur die pulle havanna club in der küche sondern auch noch ein opossum im baum dass er joachim zeigen will. Zum glück gabs keine verletzten….

für zwei tage mieten wir uns ein auto und besuchen noch einmal pat und david. Ramon, ein freund der beiden (emigirert aus uruguay) hat uns alle zum essen eingeladen. Während sein salad und sein chili avocado dip köstlich sind, haben seine schnitzel – kenntnisse noch raum zur verbesserung…aber naja, ganz toll ist es, dass wir auf dem weg in der siedlung einige känguruhs in den vorgärten liegen sehen. Für die oz’s sind das eher ne plage….nun heisst es endgültig abschied nehmen von den beiden, hoffentlich sehen wir uns bald wieder.

Zurück in sydney haben wir einen flug nach queensland gebucht, genauer nach townsville. Ursprünglich wollten wir unbedingt auf die fischdis oder nach vanuatu. Einmal die südsee gesehen zu haben… Leider ist ferienzeit und alle flüge dahin sind viel zu teuer. Insofern nach townsville. Dort in der nähe liegt magnetic island, eine ferieninsel mit schönen stränden, paar wäldern und felsen…von paul heisst es nun abschied nehmen, denn wenn wir wiederkommen ist er auf urlaub in frankreich…soren, jeannette und manou sehen wir nochmal wieder.

Zurück in Sydney machen wir erstmal nix, aber auch gar nix!

Nein so ganz stimmt das nun auch nicht.

Mit jeanette und manou fahren wir in die city und schauen uns die unglaublich beeindruckende oper an. Was ein prachtbauwerk. Hut ab vor dem dänen!

Sydney city ist eine unglaublich schöne stadt …. nicht beengend und durch die parks sehr grün. Da schönes wetter ist, gönnen wir uns sushi take away und picknicken im park dort treffen wir auch auf soeren der uns in seiner mittagspause besuchen kommt. Was ein leben! Could be worse!

Den rest der zeit (so ungefähr ne gute Woche) verbringen wir mit shoppen, sightseeing und nichtstun. Und haben ein wenig am leben unserer expats teil. Am wochenende gibt es bei der public bondi school immer nen markt wo wir auf gunters stand – noch nem ausgewanderten deutschen – in seinen balinesichen hängematten abhängen. Fast die ganze zeit begleitet uns schönstes wetter, um die 20 grad. Kalt wird’s nur wenn die sonne geht. Dann aber mal so richtig.

Ach ja, ein wenig Lonely Planet Bashing muss auch hier sein. Wir machen eine ein tag sightseeing tour, die wir gegen 18.30 uhr in darling harbour mit einem besuch des australian wildlife zoos, gleich neben dem aquarium, beenden wollen. Laut planet bis 22 uhr offen, letzter einlass um 21 uhr. Prima, noch zwei stunden zeit sich die vielen giftigen tiere anzuschauen, auf nem känguruh zu reiten und was weiss der gilb…leider stehen wir vor verschlossener tür. Der zoo schliesst um 18 uhr, letzter einlass um 17 uhr. Die information im lonely planet bezieht sich auf das aquarium. Tja, da wäre gründliche recherche hilfreich gewesen. Danke mal wieder lonely planet.

Am freitag, den 10.7 hat jeannette geburtstag. Soeren opfert sich als babysitter und sabine, paul und joachim führen jeannette aus. Paul und joachim haben vorher das programm in der oper gecheckt und wir haben glück. Megan washington, eine lokale folk / jazzsingerin gibt ein konzert. Für jeannette eine überraschung. Vorher lehren wir noch 2 flaschen sekt in einer bar vor der oper, mit blick auf city und harbour bridge. Sagten wir schon, dass es sich in sydney gut leben lässt? Das konzert ist in einem kleinen teil, die athmosphäre intim und persönlich. Es gefällt uns allen. Wer mal was von megan washington hören will: hier der LINK!

Well….it’s been another week in Sydney & in between job hunting I’ve been enjoying the sunshine. I’ve been working on my tan on Bondi Beach, & this day hit 30º but the water was still quite fresh (I over heard some people near me saying) It was nice to get back down to the beach & just chill out like old times.

Ive shared a bottle of bubbles with the very lovely Linda down at the Opera Bar.  It was a lovely evening & the harbour was buzzing with activity, big ships & ferry’s maneuvering in & out of each others way.

I was lucky enough to be invited out on the boat with the Brackens, a whale swam by, the boys caught some flathead & us chicks sat in the sun enjoying champagne (well….it was Meg’s birthday!)

I’m glad I made it back to Sydney in time to celebrate Craigs 40th birthday.  Hawaiian theme means loads of loud shirts & chicks with flowers (& umbrellas) in their hair.  Thanks Joy & Craig for putting on a lovely party.

WHALE carcasses left to rot in southeast Queensland’s Moreton Bay could be attracting a monster shark believed to be lurking in the area.

A 3m plus white pointer caught on drum line off Stradbroke Island was found dead and covered in massive bite marks last week.

Queensland Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said the bite marks had a radius of 50cm and the distinctive triangular shape of a white pointer.

“The experts believe it would have taken a white pointer at least five metres long to cause this kind of damage,” Mr Mulherin said.

Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland president Simon Baltais said the dumping of whale carcasses in the area was providing a huge meat tray for such big predators.

Three whales that died in southeast Queensland waters in recent months had been towed to Mud Island in Moreton Bay.

“The whale carcasses are taken up the shoreline (of Mud Island) and rot away…,” Mr Baltais said.

“It would certainly attract a lot of predators and scavengers – white pointers love dead whales.”

He said the carcasses should be towed out to sea away from populated beaches and bays.

“It is costly but is the lost of one human worth it because it was too costly to tow carcasses further out?” Mr Baltais said.

Mr Mulherin said the discovery re-enforced the importance of shark nets and drum lines.

The sight of a three meter Great White shark is enough to send shivers down the spine of any surfer. The sight of a three meter Great White shark that has been munched to pieces by a bigger shark will have you looking at investing in a chainmail wetsuit.

This shark was found off the coast of North Stradbroke Island, experts say that judging by the size of the bite marks the shark that made a meal of this fella was most likely a five meter Great White.

When I tried to look up our fourth cruise port–Icy Strait Point—in the guide books I had purchased, I couldn’t find it.  Eventually, I did some digging around online and discovered why. 

Icy Strait Pont was created in 2001 specifically for the cruise ship companies by turning an old cannery into an unappealing tourist trap. A Web site I found earlier (but can’t locate now) indicated that the villagers in the mostly Native American town of Hoonah, 1.5 miles down the road, used to make their living from canning salmon before that industry left them behind. More recently, they’ve turned “in desparation” to tourism instead.

It’s impossible to wander around the Point without getting the feeling that you have stepped into some sort of Disneyesque land that the cartoon characters have abandoned in favor of fast food employees.  The whole thing isn’t much bigger than the Small World ride.  They sell “authentic” excursions, Starbucks, off-brand fast food, and other junk.  (In fact, they used the word “authentic” so many times in their promotional literature that the desparation is palpable.)  The only good thing about the place is the little kiosk from which the local school district sells books about Alaska.  Okay, there might have been something worthwhile in the cannery museum part of the complex, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at it. 

You can take a .6 mile walk around the perimeter of the Point and get pretty views like the first three I posted here.

And that pretty much completes the worthwhile entertainment there.  Since no one was going to get me up on “the largest zipline in the world,” and I just couldn’t believe in the authenticity of the “authentic Native American” show, I signed us up for whale watching.

Both Mom and I have always been flora people rather than fauna lovers, but we made the right choice in this case.  Whale watching turned out to be irresistibly cool, and Icy Strait was the perfect place to do it. 

The Strait–which we traveled down until we reached Pt. Adolphus–was gorgeous. We had a sunny day (although, true to the name, the Strait itself was the coldest place in Alaska we visited), and I had my digital camera with me for almost the first time on the trip  (I had been using disposables on the raft and canoe trips), so I took pictures nonstop until my batteries died, including the one you see in this blog’s masthead.

 The first animal we saw was a sea otter sitting on a buoy.

And I was poised and ready for our first encounter with the orcas (commonly called killer whales): 

We saw several groups of them—which is to say—we saw their fins and tails rising and resubmerging.

They tended to move slowly.  Once we spotted their fins above the water, we could keep our eyes on the same area and they would emerge again very closet to the place where we saw them submerge.  It was possible to follow the disturbance in the water over them to keep an eye on the location.

Spotting them becomes addictive, in the same way fishing does (if I recall correctly from a long-ago trip with Uncle Rocky).  After seeing them a few times, I just couldn’t get enough.

 Everybody was into it. 

Some more than others . . .

The orcas seemed happy to hang out and be observed indefinitely, but we were on a schedule ( a two and a half hour round trip), so the captain moved us along to St. Adolphus Point, where we found humpback whales.  (My camera batteries were dead by then, so I just enjoyed. )  They have smaller fins that don’t rise up very high—but they are much more likely to raise their tails.  It was just so cool.  We saw them one or two at a time. 

Returning to the Point, we saw the orcas again.  And later that night, I spotted a few orcas following the cruise ship (because I was now educated about what to look for).

We caught a 10:15 a.m. whale watching trip, which meant that we had returned and finished a fast food lunch by 1 p.m.  Mom was tried and returned to the ship.  I was desperate to take a walk longer than the .6 mile nature trail around the Point and availed myself of the only other option:  the 1.5 mile trail to Hoonah, which followed the road along the coast.

I saw some more gorgeous mountains and water, a quarry where the local dark gray rock was being excavated and broken up into small pieces thanks to Recovery Act funding for “high-skill, high-wage jobs” (or so the nearby billboard implied),  a picturesque dock, and some local stores and restaurants.  Other tourists from the ship occasionally passed me in both directions.

A guy sitting at a little table in front of a bar urged me and some other women walking nearby to have “the best crab ever.”  I bypassed that temptation but eventually found the tourist foodstuff that had been at the top of my traveling to-do list since I read that red huckleberries were native to Alaska: huckleberry ice cream.  (Those of you who traveled with me to Montana understand my obsession.)

The guy behind the counter at the ice cream place spent 10 minutes explaining to the customers in front of me why he resides there.  “Where else can you live this outdoor lifestyle?” he asked.  It turned out that both he and the customer were former pilots, so they had a lot to say to each other.  Waiting impatiently because I was concerned about getting back to the ship in time, I concluded that all non-native Alaskans begin nearly every conversations with tourists by explaining why they are living in this climate, 1000s of miles from home.  You hear these explanations as often as you hear this joke:

“Women are outnumbered by men here 8:1.  As a result, women like to say that ‘the odds are good, but the goods are odd.’”

I didn’t notice it until I got home, but I’m pretty sure that I only ever heard men tell this joke.      

The ice cream was fine but not as good as the Montana-huckleberry-ice-cream-of-memory.   And it was made in Oregon.

Australien, Sydney, Dubbo, Jervis Bay

am Abend des 24.6. checken wir in Denpasar airport ein. wir haben eine kurze nacht vor uns. 5 stunden fug bis melbourne, dort erstmal einreisen – das ist übrigens alles problemlos und easy in australien. Good on them! , Dann noch ne stunde weiter fliegen bis sydney. Nicht zu vergessen: die uhr 2 stunden vorstellen. Als kroenung wissen wir nicht ob soeren uns abholt, seine adresse haben wir auch nicht. Es droht ein bartlock. Der einzige backup ist pauls mobilnummer…

in sydney angekommen grosse erleichterung. Und freude! Da steht doch tatsächlich soeren am flughafen und holt uns mit nem volvo kombi ab. Das ist ja fast wie zuhause! Nach ner fetten umarmung geht’s erst mal richtung

bondi. Dort wohnen sie. Bevor wir aber zu ihrer wohnung fahren zeigt uns soeren noch ihren hausstrand – den legendären bondi beach. Erst dann geht’s zur wohnung.

Alles sehr hübsch. 3 zimmer mit küche, bad und kleinem garten. Nach nem sehr guten kaffee muss Soeren leider zur arbeit.

Wir beziehen unser zimmer – danke manou dass du dein kinderzimmer für uns geräumt hast – und richten uns häuslich ein.

Anschliessend spazieren wie wieder zum bondi beach. Wirkt er auf bildern eher normal bis langweilig, ist er so live und in farbe schon wunderschön. Toll hier.

Auf einmal rufts laut hallo und jeanette und manou stehen vor uns. Die freude ist gross – selbst die kleine manou freut sich dass ein stück hamburg in sydney ist.

Manou spricht inzwischen perfekt englisch. Es ist faszinierend wie die kleinen das so einfach lernen.

Auf dem nachhauseweg wird noch lecker wein gekauft. So ein wiedersehen muss ja schließlich gebührend gefeiert werden. Nun kommt auch soeren von der Arbeit nach hause. Kaum ist er da verschwinden soeren und joachim im wohnzimmer und fachsimpeln über fussball, st pauli, fussball, st pauli. vor lauter eifer und freude lässt der eine den anderen nicht ausreden man merkt dass beide mal so wirklich auf „fussballentzug“ sind

Am abend hat soeren lecker gekocht und paul kommt vorbei. Alle sind wieder zusammen – schoen isses. Und das fühlt sich jetzt fast wie in der hein-hoyer in hamburg an. Nochmals: schön isses.

Wir fühlen uns in sydney sichtlich wohl. Endlich mal wieder in einer wohnung mit küche und vor allem kühlschrank zu wohnen. Wow was ein luxus. Wie toll ist doch der gang zum kühlschrank und nach lust und laune was zu esssen zu machen oder einfach ein brot zu schmieren? Nach einem halben jahr auf achse lernt man solche dinge echt zu schätzen

selbst das geschirrspülen macht wieder spass – und das soll was heissen.

Der einzige nachteil: in sydney ist es winter und wenn die sonne weg ist wird es für unsere verhältnisse arschkalt. Unsere ärschchen sind halt noch die tropischen gefilde gewohnt.

Leider gibt es in den meisten häuser keine heizung. So auch nicht in „unserem“ jetzigen. Da wir nur einen dicken fetten schlafsack haben muss eine heizdecke her. Gesagt getan.

Da, wie bereits ewähnt, hier winter ist bleibt uns nichts anderes übrig als shoppen zu gehen warme klamotten müssen her … joooo es gibt schlechteres als in sydney shoppen zu gehen. Immer gut wenn man einen triftigen grund dafür hat.

Zwei tage nach unserer ankunft geht’s zu unserer ersten kulturellen veranstaltung. Es ist samstag und paul hat tickets für das rugby freundschaftsspiel australien – frankreich im sydney olympiastadion organisiert. Wir sind mal gespannt. Auf dem weg zum stadion fällt uns der erste grosse unterschied auf. Während in deutschland und vielen anderen ländern auf dem weg zum ereignis schon gesungen wird gehen hier alle andächtig und ruhig. Hallo, wo bleibt die leidenschaft? Was ist denn hier los? Soeren klärt uns auf dass das hier ganz normal sei….na dann.

Im stadion angekommen kauft paul erstmal unglaublich viel bier. 1000 dank nochmal. Das bier haben wir auch noetig denn das spiel ist eher schlecht und langweilig und ausserdem springt der funke nicht auf uns über….es ist eine tragik der anglophilen länder, dass hier sportarten mit kaputten bällen so populär sind. Well, ein erlebnis war es trotzdem.

Am nächsten morgen treffen wir uns mit rob um nach dubbo zu fahren. Joachim ist 1990 mal in australien gewesen und hat bei einer australischen familie gewohnt, pat, david mit ihren kindern shawn, stacey und scott. Hieraus haben sich immer wieder besuche ergeben – sei es in deutschland, australien oder auch den usa wo scott mittlerweile lebt. Stacey ist mit rob verheiratet. Sie haben drei kinder und leben in dubbo. Das ist 6 stunden von sydney entfernt und damit quasi schon im busch…und da joachim stacey seid 1996 nicht mehr gesehen hat ist das eine gute gelegenheit. Zumal pat und david auch gerade in dubbo sind und wir mit denen dann zurück zur küste fahren können. Die beiden leben in jervis bay, 3 stunden suedlich von sydney. Zu kompliziert? Auch egal…

wir fahren am sonntag jedenfalls sechs stunden durch zum teil unglaublich langweilige landschaften nach dubbo. Dubbo ist der letzte aussenposten vor dem nichts. Hier leben 400000 menschen. Rob und stacey arbeiten hier als lehrer. Bei unserer ankunft gibt es ein grosses hallo. Nach ein bisschen erzählen und einem abendessen geht es dann aber ins bett. Wir sind gerockt.

Die nächsten tage verbringen wir mit zoobesuch und australischem familienleben. Alles ist sehr herzlich und entspannt. Am mittwoch fahren wir mit pat und david dann an die kueste nach jervis bay. Wieder 6 stunden fahrt. Für australier ist das ne kurzstrecke. Das kann man auch mal für nen tag machen…kein problem. Wieder stundenlang durch die pampa. In jervis bay angekommen holen wir uns für den nächsten tag noch tickets zum whale watching und machen noch einen kurzen spaziergang. Jervis bay ist eine bucht (naturschutzgebiet) mit unglaublich schoenen, weissen stränden. Für die Aussies ist es Feriengebiet oder Altersheim. Das heisst, ausserhalb der Ferien leben hier nur alte menschen. Wir haben mit pat und david trotzdem sehr viel spass, denn die beiden sind immer noch jung geblieben und haben einen köstlichen humor. Auch wenn pat manchmal nur sehr schwer zu verstehen ist. Sechste sträflingsgeneration und einen saumässigen akzent.

Am nächsten Morgen geht’s los zum Whale watching. Kaum raus aus der bucht ist das meer tierisch windig und das boot fängt ordentlich an zu schaukeln. Und so hält die hälfte der gäste mit halbgefüllter spucktüte ausschau nach walen. Wir werden natürlich nicht seekrank….sind ja wellenerprobt von bali. Wale sehen wir vor allem aus der ferne. Zu guter letzt erbarmt sich einer und schwimmt 5 meter an unserem boot vorbei. Was für hübsche, edle und tolle tiere. Wie kann man die töten? Wie kann man die essen wollen?

Am tag darauf wollen wir nach sydney zurück. Unser zug geht am Nachmittag, so bleibt noch zeit, Pat und Davids Sportclub anzuschauen. Während Pat hier die tennisqueen ist, spielt david gern golf. Und er will uns was zeigen. Bisher haben wir wilde känguruhs nur aus der ferne gesehen. David sagt, dass auf dem golfplatz gut und gern hundert känguruhs leben. Hmmm, mal sehen. Und tatsächlich, sie lümmeln am loch 7. laut david einer ihrer lieblingsplätze. Wir finden das total klasse. Für die oz’s ist es normal bis lästig mit den „roos“ zu leben. Schaut euch die fotos an….ist das nicht toll?

Nach diesem letzten highlight geht’s zurück nach Sydney, die grossstadt geniessen und vor allem: abhängen in der wohung von soeren und jeannette. Hier haben wir couch, kühlschrank, dvd player, fernseher. Ja, nach einem halben jahr vermissen wir ein stück alltag.

Stradbroke Island

We took a visit to Stradbroke Island which to the locals is called “Straddie.”

It is about an hour from Brisbane. We went up to “Point Lookout” which overlooks the Coral Sea and were hoping to see some whales migrating. Luckily as soon as we hit the cliffs we saw a whale, baby whale and dolphins.

Avant de partir sur Melbourne pour prendre l’avion vers Alice Springs, nous décidons de faire halte à Jervis Bay pour quelques jours. En effet, le rythme de ces dernières semaines a été tel que nous avons besoin de moments un peu plus calmes (les enfants n’ont même pas eu le temps d’avancer dans leurs leçons… comme dit Adrien .

Une des activités à Jervis Bay est l’observation des baleines… quand il y en a… Et, par chance, il semble qu’il y en ait justement quelques unes dans la baie… qui se sont arrêtées durant leur migration d’été vers les eaux plus froides du sud de l’Australie… Nous réservons donc une croisière de trois heures et hop… sur le bateau…

Le capitaine envoie son bateau au milieu de la baie et soudain, c’est un peu d’écume, un gros splash à quelques centaines de mètres… les voilà! Il coupe les moteurs du bateau et nous dérivons à leur rencontre. C’est alors un festival de plusieurs minutes, un jeu de cache cache avec les cétacés qui apparaissent et disparaissent à intervalle régulier autour du bateau… L’appareil photo crépite… mais je manque la plus belle… une baleine Humback qui saute hors de l’eau face au bateau en présentant son ventre blanc strié… quelques secondes où le temps s’arrête…

Au retour, nous croisons des albatros au large des falaises qui ferment la baie de Jervis… c’est aussi un spectacle étonnant que ces oiseaux qui plongent à pleine vitesse dans l’eau en repliant leurs ailes…

Route 62, längste Weinstraße der Welt

Ich bin schon früh auf den Beinen. Eigentlich wollten Katie, Dona und ich uns noch eine Ausstellung in Oudtshoorn anschauen, aber Dona hat dann doch andere Pläne und Katie pennt noch um Neun. Naja, ein bisschen schade. Also mache ich mich auf den Weg über die berühmte “Route Sixty-Two”, einer Panorama-Straße durch die Karoo Richtung Westen, nach Montagu.

Auf dem Weg nach Montagu komme ich an schnuckeligen, kleinen Orten vorbei (Ladismith, Barrydale), die allesamt den Eindruck machen, als seien sie noch nicht im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen. Die Landschaft entlang der Route 62 ist wirklich schön, aber aber doch nicht ganz so spektakulär, wie ich mir ausgemalt habe. Ist wohl auch mehr eine Marketing-Masche, aber trotzdem, der  Weg llohnt sich. Die Weingüter, die auf dem Weg liegen, lasse ich aus, muss ja Autofahren…

In the middle of nowhere

Gegen 4 komme ich in Montagu an. Dieses Städtchen hat nur ein paar Tausend Einwohner, aber Straßen wie in einer Großstadt, alle wie mit dem Lineal gezogen. Jedes Häuschen in Montagu hat seinen eigenen Charme, das Örtchen ist wirklich sehenswert, wie es so zwischen den Bergen liegt. Wetter ist sehr warm, kein Wölkchen am Himmel, die Luft aber kristallklar, was die Farben der Bergwelt drumherum noch besser in Szene setzt.

Ich komme in der Pension “Four Oaks” an. Der Empfang ist (mal wieder…) warm und herzlich, ich fühle mich gleich wohl.

Die Rezeptionistin sieht ein ein bisschen aus wie Halle Berry, die hübsche dunkelhäutige amerikanische Actrice, bekannt als Bond-Girl. Sehr apart… Ich bekomme ein mittelgrosses, aber sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtetes Zimmer mit Doppelbett (450 Rand mit Frühstück). Leider ist das Restaurant am Sonntag geschlossen, aber für mich wird eine Reservierung in “Jessica’s Restaurant” gemacht, nur eine Straße weiter. Ich schlendere dann ein bisschen durch die Stadt, aber am Sonntag wirkt alles wie ausgestorben. Nur der Spar-Supermarkt hat auf. Ach ja und die Touristen-Info, die für so ein kleines Örtchen sehr gut ausgestattet ist.

Abends bin ich dann im “Jessica’s”, ein gediegenes, kleines Restaurant mit Spitzen-Küche, in der Bath Street. Ich bestelle Springbock-Medaillons mit Spätzle an einer Cranberry-Sauce. Dazu gibt es Süßkartoffeln und Zucchini. Springbock hat etwas von Wild, aber in Richtung Rind tendierend. Als Nachtisch ein wirklich unvergessliches Blauschimmel-Käse-EIS, jawohl, sehr delikat. Ich bin mal wieder überrascht über die Rechnung, kaum 20 Euro. Alleine für die zwei Gläser hervorragenden Weins würde man in München schon 10 bezahlen. Und dann noch in diesem Ambiente.

Leider muss ich diesmal alleine essen, und das trübt die Freude. Um mich mich “>mich “>herum tuschelnde Pärchen und ältere Freundeskreise. Ich versuche mich ganz auf das Essen zu konzentrieren und mir die einzelnen Geschmacksnoten zu merken. Trotzdem ist Essen in Gesellschaft einfach schöner, ich habe das Gefühl, die Kellnerinnen haben Mitleid mit mir. Südafrika ist unter anderem das Land des guten Essens und des guten Weines, aber alleine macht das irgendwie doch nicht so richtig Spaß. Aus diesem Grund sind mir die Gaumenfreuden Südafrikas zum Teil verborgen geblieben. Immerhin habe ich Kudu, Zebra, Springbock und Strauß probiert. Den guten Wein hebe ich mir für meinen nächsten Besuch auf. Statt dessen habe ich viele Hamburger verputzt, die ich in den nächsten Wochen wieder abtrainieren muss…

Erstmal bekomme ich im Four Oaks ein leckeres englisches Früstück vorgesetzt, Müsli auf Erdbeerjoghurt, Bacon, Eggs, Toast und diese englischen gebratenen Pilze, alles hübsch auf dem Teller arrangiert. Also: auch das “Four Oaks” nehme ich in die Liste der empfehlenswerten Hotels auf.

Anschließend habe ich meine “Mission” zu erfüllen: ich muss Nonkosi besuchen, die Leiterin des örtlichen Museums (Montagu-Museum), welches sich in einer alten Missionskirche gleich gegenüber dem Four Oaks befindet. Ich überbringe ihr die Grüße ihres Bruders Bongani, den ich in Graaff-Reinet in der Kneipe kennengelernt habe. Sie freut sich riesig, insbesondere als ich ihr das Video vorspiele. Sie ist richtig aus dem Häuschen. Anschließend muss ich mir das Museum anschauen, welches nun ja, für Außenstehende nicht ganz so interessant ist. Trotzdem nett gemacht, man erfährt ein bisschen über die Leute, die hier leben.

Anschließend bin ich noch im Internet-Cafe in der Bath Street und versuche, eine Unterkunft in Kapstadt zu finden. Leider sind alle Hostels, die ich mir rausgesucht habe (wie das Cats & Moose oder das Backpack) schon ausgebucht. Vom Backpack werde ich dann an das “Zebra Crossings” verwiesen, nur ein paar Häuser weiter.

Von Montagu Richtung Hermanus

Free Willy live

Gegen 11 fahre ich Richtung Süden, nach Hermanus. Hermanus ist angeblich der beste Ort der Welt um Wale zu beobachten, welche sich Ab Juli bis Dezember in der Bucht versammeln, um ihre Kinder zur Welt zu bringen.

Ich parke mein Auto, gehe zur Uferpromenade, und voila, sehe schon die Rücken und Schwanzflossen zweier Buckelwale. Natürlich überall Touristen mit gezückten Kameras, aber dennoch ist das alles beeindruckend. Allerdings springen die Wale nicht umeinander, so wie in “Free Willy”, aber trotzdem ist es faszinierend. Leider haben die Buckelwale dann den Rest des Tages andere Pläne und machen sich auf und davon in andere Gefilde. In den nächsten Stunden kann man zwar noch entfernt die Fontänen der Wale erahnen, aber so nah kriege ich sie nicht mehr sehen.

Gegen halb fünf mache ich mich dann auf Richtung Kapstadt, noch 120 km auf der N2, einer supermodern ausgebauten Autobahn. Es ist abendlicher Berufsverkehr, es gibt ein paar Staus.

Etwa 10 km vor Kapstadt, auf Höhe des Flughafens, wieder überall neben (und auf) der Autobahn herumlaufende Arbeiter auf dem Weg nach Hause, oder Kinder, die direkt neben der 4-spurigen Straße Fußball spielen. Und dann sieht man sie auch schon, die bunten, aber armseligen Wellblech- Holz- und Betonhütten, die Townships Kapstadts, in denen Millionen (schwarze) Menschen hausen, im totalen Kontrast zur modernen, schillernden, europäisch-amerikanischen Metropole. Die Townships ziehen sich kilometerlang neben der Autobahn dahin.
