SO, how many did you get right?

Hotels are $10 a night in Vegas!  That’s like YMCA prices in the 70’s!  Even the people living in tent villages in Hoovervilles around the country should be able to afford that.  Perhaps that’s the answer for thousands of families who are now homeless thanks to the mortgage crisis.  And it’s a good thing Vegas has been making itself more ‘family friendly’ for the past two decades!  If only Vegas had better heroin Williamsburg could send the hipster hobos there…maybe market it as what Hunter S. Thompson would have wanted them to do.

So the economy is supposedly on the rebound but no one seems to have bothered to let Vegas know.  I feel like Vegas should already be a fairly attractive option for homeless peeps.  It has to be a freegan dream with the all you can eat buffets and extreme meals.  There are TONS of tourists so you should be able to beg off an unlimited amount of ever changing strangers.  I’ve never heard of anyone having trouble getting drugs there and you can turn $1 into THOUSANDS!  Plus if you’re pretty like Demi Moore, sometimes millionaires will pay for you to play dress-up, ride on helicopters, blow on their dice (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) and then send you home with a healthy chunk of change for your troubles!  It’s a win for vegas and a win for hobos!

Oh wait-I just remembered why I could never live there…their drunk dance-off’s SUCK!  Who am I kidding…any drunk dance off is awesome.  Any dance off is awesome.  Turn your audio down unless you can’t get enough of drunk girls screaming.

We are super huge fans of Redbox. You know those red vending machines that you can find at Walgreens and Wal-Mart? For $1.10, you can watch a movie and return it the next day by 9:00 pm the next evening. When you reserve it online, all you have to do is go to the machine, swipe your card you reserved it with and it dispenses your movie. That’s it. A receipt comes to your email. Absolutely lovely! Technology is so great in so many ways.

This weekend, we watched What Happens in Vegas and it was a cute movie. I like the feel-good-couple-falls-in-love-by-the-end movies. Yes, indeedy. I’m a chick-flick kinda gal. Now, I like some of the other stuff too but a feel good romantic comedy certainly works for me.

It was funny…It was cute….Very sweet.

Well, tbh I don’t really know why I keep buying movies.. (or downloading, sssssh…) because I always end up staring between two or three movies and Just My Luck is always one of the movies.
And every time I end up with that movie. I bet I could repeat the hole movie by myself, since I know every single line of the movie! Haha…

The Hangover starring Bradley Cooper

Looking at the major movies opening today gives me a distinct feeling of deja vu. Land of the Lost, My Life in Ruins and The Hangover all feel eerily familiar. Haven’t we already seen these flicks?

Inspired by the trippy Sid and Marty Krofft 1970s TV series of the same name, Land of the Lost stars Will Ferrell in all his goofy glory. This one is unapologetically recycled, paying homage to the cult classic show while simultaneously trying to appeal to young Ferrell fans. Has it piqued your interest?

Nia Vardalos looks absolutely radiant in the trailer for My Life in Ruins, but it sure looks an awful lot like her breakout hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I’m not saying that that’s a bad thing, but I’m just wondering if lightning can strike twice. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was one of the highest grossing comedies of all time. Do you think My Life in Ruins will give it a run for its money?

The Hangover, starring Bradley Cooper, seems the most derivative of all. Peter Berg explored this territory  in 1998’s dark comedy Very Bad Things. The film starred Cameron Diaz, who also starred in What Happens in Vegas with Ashton Kutcher ten years later. Will The Hangover come up with a fresh take on bad behavior in Sin City?  We’ll see.

Now there’s a blog headline that can’t be ignored, right?

With just four words it proves the case of the marketing effort I got a chance to learn more about at the annual workshop for the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE) Communication Section – in Las Vegas, appropriately enough.

In a session titled “Marketing Las Vegas in the Pasta Economy,” Terry Jicinsky, the senior vice president of operations for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, talked about the “What happens here, stays here” campaign.

Before I go into some details, I’ll explain the pasta reference. Jicinsky defined it as an indicator of the choices Americans are making in terms of discretionary income. That is, the number of people/families staying home on a Saturday night eating a cheap pasta meal versus going out for dinner.

Makes sense.

Las Vegas clearly is a discretionary destination. And that distinction requires a different approach to marketing and public relations.

Jicinsky outlined his case to the professional communicators in the room by considering the challenges we have in common:

-How do we get our message out?

-Where do we get our message out?

-How do we get people to care about our message?

-How do we get people over a certain perception?

Vegas certainly is perceived a certain way.

But it’s not by accident.

The “What happens here…” campaign actually began back in 2002. Only recently has Vegas gone back to it, as its marketing bread and butter.

But Jicinsky spent a lot of his time talking about the impact of the recession on the convention business in Vegas – and a bit of Vegas-bashing from President Obama – that forced Vegas to go on the offensive to and create a sub-campaign for 2009 – Vegas Means Business.

With 22,000 annual business events in Vegas and all the people who attend them, Jicinsky said the recession-fueled drop in convention business has been brutal for the efforts to fill the city’s 145,000 hotel rooms.

To try and increase the meeting business, Jicinsky highlighted the first of three points for communicators:

*Take on a cause

The cause, to combat “the anti-convention in Vegas” crowd, unified the hotels and politicians to get out in the media and tell the one story that companies with conventions to plan needed to hear – that Las Vegas has more hotels and more meeting rooms than anyone else… and is built for the convention business.

As part of that effort, and beyond it during the recession, Vegas turned to Jicinsky’s second piece of advice:

*Play the media

It’s the free publicity card… Give the media a story. With overall tourism to the city tailing off in the recession, the “Vegas Bound” campaign and Cranfills Gap, Texas came into the picture. Vegas offered all of the small town’s hard working citizens a free vacation. The campaign got huge play in the media, including several major media hits. Here’s a look at how Vegas packaged up part of the story on its YouTube channel:

Jicinsky said coverage of the exploits of the citizens of Cranfills Gap earned them more than 400 free mentions on TV, in print and online.

The playing of the media continued with the return of the “What happens here, stays here” theme. Ads like this were once again aimed at reminding the average American why Vegas is attractive, by offering a unique twist on life in their own home towns:

Jicinsky’s third point of advice for marketers and communicators was:

*Tell a story

Can’t get any simpler than that. Jicinsky said every business and organization can find their own way to tell their own stories, and make their content top of mind with their target audience.

One of the stories Jicinsky said that Vegas also has tried to tell through marketing is about its many restaurants, in an effort to remind would-be visitors that the city has many great places to eat. You may have seen that in its “Your Vegas is Showing” campaign.

I know I’ve rambled here a bit, but the session with Jicinsky was really interesting and hopefully this brought some of it to light for you.

Going into the session with Jicinsky, I would have argued that the “What happens here…”  campaign has become so entrenched in the U.S. that they could pull all the TV ads and other significant marketing and still not see a drop in tourism.

That may be true. But clearly Vegas still has a need to communicate and a strategy for staying a top business and discretionary income destination for people who like – and can put up with – the sinful nature of Sin City.

Does anyone else notice that every time this guy farts a movie out, it immediately is a box office smash? Please, I’m begging you, black people, stop going to see this man’s movies. Tyler Perry is a baffoon. His movies are bad, unoriginal, and purport stereotypes of the black community. Not to mention that Martin Lawrence should sue his ass for stealing his Big Momma’s House character. Seriously speaking, what do people find so funny about a black man dressing up as an old black woman? Sure, I laughed when Eddie Murphy did it in The Nutty Professor, but that doesn’t mean I’d want to see it again in another movie. This fucking guy has made a franchise out of dressing up like a sassy, black woman. Maybe, since I’m not black, I can’t fully grasp what the black community finds so utterly fascinating about Tyler Perry, but you don’t see every white person rushing out to the nearest cineplex to support every goofy white guy movie. When we see a trailer for Good Luck Chuck, we know its gonna be a piece of shit. We avoided The Love Guru like the plague. And I’d rather have ninja stars thrown into my eyeballs then endure the waste of celluloid that is What Happens in Vegas.

I simply don’t understand the allure of Tyler Perry…but you know what? I’m sick and fucking tired of seeing his name on every movie, like he’s god’s gift to film making. Tyler Perry Presents, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, yeah we realize you suck, I’m glad you’re finally starting to as well. Nevertheless, the amount of directors/producers putting their names before the titles of their films has gotten out of hand. If you’re Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorcese, you’ve earned that right. However, if you’re Tyler Perry, you have not. Lets imagine a world free of this:

In a world where Tyler Perry would’ve had a couple of “caps busted in his ass” by his own Madea character:

• Big Momma’s House 7 would become the highest grossing movie of all time.
• The black community will turn to good filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton to hand over their hard earned dollars to.
• Mike Myers will reinvent his career by playing a sassy, old white woman named Marge. His movies will take the world by storm. Sad but true.
• Lionsgate Entertainment will still have plenty of other crappy franchises to make their millions off of, like Saw and Crank.
• Wouldn’t have to listen to comments like these where Tyler Perry wishes he didn’t have to play Madea anymore, the single thing that has made him richer than God!

• Bigoted rednecks would have one less thing to complain about.
• With all the Tyler Perry movies gone, it would open up 15-20 movie slots a year for ORIGINAL ideas. What an insane concept!

Here’s the real problem with Tyler Perry…people may think he’s got some important message to relay regarding the black community, but instead he is exploiting the them and laughing all the way to the bank at their expense. Some people may think, I’m generalizing when I say that blacks are the only ones who go to see Tyler Perry movies, but let’s be real, a white person at a Tyler Perry movie sticks out more than a black person at a Nickelback concert. Tyler Perry deserves to be thinned from the herd, but alas, he will continue making “groundbreaking,” “innovative,” and “hilarious” movies for the rest of eternity.

But one has to have dreams right?

Enmendé totalmente el fin de semana. Sí. No estaba muy seduro de la peli que me había visto ayer pero hoy fue completamente diferente. Hoy me ví The Hangover de Todd Phillips. Una peli que trata de recuperar los eventos perdidos de una noche desaforada en una despedida de soltero en Las Vegas de una manera creativa y divertida. Es sencillo cuando se tiene una expectativa y esta se cumple sin problemas. Comedia física, buenos apuntes, buenas actuaciones, buena dirección, buena fotografía, buena música. Una salida tranquila para entretenerse completamente.

Por donde empezar.

Empecemos por lo más ñoño, recuerdan los créditos de Panic Room de David Fincher en el 2002? Bueno, esa peli tiene la que para mí es una de las secuencias de títulos más interesantes de los últimos tiempos, unas tomas de Manhattan súper sencillas, un montaje en 3D de cada uno de los créditos de la peli y un perfecto camera tracking para que parecieran montadas en fachada. Esa secuencia fue obra de Picture Mill. Generalmente, las grandes secuencias de títulos las hace Pacific Title y aunque son excelentes como que ya no me sorprende mucho, son los megaproductores de los títulos. Picture Mill tiene un encanto especial, son sofisticados, delicados, sorprendentes. En esta peli hicieron plano secuencia de una serie de paisajes con una fotografía exquisita y una palo seco sobre los planos de una forma muy sobria: “Directed by Todd Phillips” se abre el portón de la casa y nos adentramos en la historia… Excelente. Se plantea la situación de una boda que se está organizando, la novia aparece en pantalla y está un poco preocupada, corte a plano de Bradley Cooper y nos cuenta que la cagó completamente que se le perdió el novio. Así empieza esta montaña rusa de locuras, emociones y carcajadas.

Digamos que abunda la comedia física y para eso debió haber puesto Phillips muchos acróbatas, pero no tendrían su éxito si no estuvieran muy bien personificados y caracterizados por el excelente reparto; Bradley Cooper lo recordamos Yes Man de 2008, Wedding Crashers de 2005 y como el amigo fiel de Jennifer Garner en Alias; Ed Helms sentía que lo conocía de algún lado, por eso me tocó revisar y encontré que ha tenido participaciones pequeñas en varias producciones pero nada tan particular como esta peli, Meet Dave de 2008 e Evan Almighty de 2007; Zach Galifianakis es reconocido al primer golpe por What Happens in Vegas de 2008 una peli del mismo corte que esta, de resto ha aportado la voz para varias pelis animadas; Justin Bartha es más conocido por la megafranquicia de Natural Treasure pero curiosamente en esta peli no actua mucho. Ese sería el reparto inicial pero es deslumbrante igual ver a Heather Graham y capturarnos con cierta ternura o Myke Tyson aparecer de improvisto y hacer un par de apuntes realmente divertidos.

No es gratuito. Todd Phillips es un director de comedia por excelencia debo decir que soy fanático de su Road Trip en el 2000, Old School de 2003 y Starsky & Hutch de 2004. En esta peli además nos encanta con la banda sonora donde está incluído el bajísimo Glenn Danzig y la fotografía que demuestra lo bien afinado que tiene su ojo. Las Vegas se nos muestra deslumbrante hasta en el desierto y nos mantiene pegados a la silla con buenas carcajadas y repito muy entretenidos.

Ojalá volvamos a ver pronto a Phillips en taquilla es garantía de buen cine. Se rumoraba hace unos años que iba a hacer The Six Million Dollar Man con Jim Carrey, o la segunda parte de Old School creo que como van las cosas es más posible que siga la secuela de esta peli antes que los otros dos proyectos.

Ya veremos.

Den ena (Ashton Kutcher) har precis fått sparken och den andra (Cameron Diaz) har blivit dumpad av sin pojkvän. Under en blöt kväll i Las Vegas lyckas de två främlingarna gifta sig med varandra. Dagen efter vinner han tre miljoner dollar på en enarmad bandit tillsammas med Diaz, men då man sedan försöker annulera vigseln uppstår komplikationer. Vems är egentligen pengarna? En vresig domare dömer de till att under ett halvår bo tillsammans som man och hustru för att ge äktenskapet en chans. Var för sig har de dock en annan plan som går ut på att lura av den andre pengarna.

Detta är en lättsam och rätt rolig komedi, som i och för sig inte kommer med speciellt mycket unikt. Kemin mellan Kutcher och Diaz fungerar bättre än jag hade trott och de flankeras av sina respektiva bästa kompisar spelade av Rob Corddry (The Heartbreak Kid, Semi-Pro, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay mfl) och Lake Bell (Over Her Dead Body). I andra biroller ser vi bland annat Queen Latifah och Zach Galifianakis (Baksmällan). Det som är mest underhållande är så klart då de försöker sätta krokben för varandra, men är det någon som verkligen tror att de kommer förbi ovänner??? En harmlös och ganska söt bagatell som jag dock inte önskar osedd.

Betyg: 3
