Movember literally is a combination of words mustache and November – but what it really signifies is the month-long event that occurs every year when men grow out their mustaches to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer. Every November the goal of Movember is the same, to “change the face of men’s health.”
</sup>

Prostate cancer develops in the prostate, a gland found in the male reproductive system. Although prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than the age of 40, it is the leading cause of death from cancer in men over the age of 75. Approximately 80 percent of men by the age of 80 are diagnosed with the condition. There are often no early prostate cancer symptoms, so it is common for men to be diagnosed when the cancer has spread (or metastasized). Following diagnosis, prostate cancer treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy – including gammaknife surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and cryotherapy.

The origins of Movember start in Australia, when a group of friends came up with the idea in 2003. Since, the movement has spread globally and especially in the United States has picked up speed and popularity. The official US Movember Group was established in 2004.

Any male can participate in Movember, as long as they grow a mustache, of course. These men are called Mo Bros. Females can participate as well by spreading awareness of men’s health issues and supporting their favorite Mo Bros. Mo Sistas can support the Mo Bros and give them encouragement and inspiration to grow a full mustache – a task that many men may see as daunting. Teams and individuals can register to create online personalities that show off their progress and accept donations.

The charity event in the US has gained over 300 million dollars since its onset to support prostate cancer and testicular cancer initiatives, which is music to the ears of many metastatic prostate cancer treatment NJ specialists. Strategic goals from the funds raised include survivorship, awareness and education, prostate cancer research, and influencing change in men’s health.

It’s never too late to participate in Movember. Even if a person can’t grow a mustache, they can always support prostate cancer research by donating here. In addition, any male over the age of 40 should get a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which measures the likeness of prostate cancer and all people, male or female, should have annual health check-ups.
