Title: Cat People (1982)
Rated: R
Written by: DeWitt Bodeen & Alan Ormsby
Directed by: Paul Schrader
Starring: Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, John Heard
Tagline: An Erotic Fantasy About the Animal in Us All!

By Jen Ellingsworth

Pre-Screening Memories: My 13-year-old conscience knew it was wrong to want to see “Cat People.”

In 1984, though, there were few things on my mind other than Duran Duran, my kick-ass Lisa Frank sticker collection and this forbidden movie I was going to watch before my parents got home from work.

With feline stealth I slunk into my older brother’s room – where he proudly displayed his latest acquisition, a Sony Betamax VCR (he paid $800 for it). I’d procured the tape from a classmate who shared my obsession with horror films.

The movie proved effective in that it scared the crap out of me.

Irena (a young Nastassja Kinski), is orphaned as an infant by her animal-trainer parents. She’s reunited with her minister brother Paul (William McDowell), who’s horny as a tomcat. It’s later revealed Irena and Paul are über-cat/humans who transform into giant panthers during intercourse with others. They return back to human only after they kill their mates.

Wow! As if that weren’t enough of an engaging plot, turns out the only way to stop the transformation is sex with a sibling. It was almost too much for me handle. I’d seen nudity in films before, sure, but this movie was so gory I had nightmares for weeks and couldn’t go near the family cat, Tigger.

I remember in one scene, Paul is transforming from cat back to human (so slick were the special effects!), and (gag) eats some glistening leftover fur-skin from his stomach.

Paul continues to sleep with, and maul, numerous lovers, while Irena starts dating a zookeeper Oliver (John Heard). Thing is, she can’t have sex with him because then she’d have to eat him. Paul’s killed while in panther form, Irena’s sexually frustrated and poor Oliver’s looking more and more like a tempting plate of Fancy Feast.

Twenty-three years later, I remember little more about this film other than a man’s arm is eaten by a panther through the bars of a cage in one of the final scenes. I’ve yet to see something so gruesome in a movie. Not even “Kill Bill” had more blood. (Editor’s note: ‘Kill Bill’ link is the over-the-top Crazy 88 scene, you have been warned.)

One of the major songwriters of the Twentieth Century. Bacharach’s sophisticated, but easily memorable, melodies and sun-drenched arrangements define the 1960s as perfectly as anything by the Beatles.

Though Bacharach had a distinctly classical musical education – Martinu, Cowell and Milhaud were among his teachers – his allegiance was always with pop and jazz rather than the concert hall. Following spells working as an accompanist for Vic Damone and Marlene Dietrich his song writing abilities won him chart success in the USA.

Bacharach’s first impact on the British singles chart was with Michael Holliday’s cover version of “Story of My Life”. This success was cemented with “Magic Moments” by Perry Como. Both these songs were co-written with lyricist Hal David who became his regular song-writing partner.

Together they provided a stream of hits for many US artists, notably Dionne Warwick who worked with them so frequently she was almost a member of the team. Many of these records got into the British charts, but there were classy covers too, by Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield and Sandie Shaw.

The title Hit Maker! says it all and the album includes; “Don’t Make Me Over”, “Walk on By” (both originally recorded by Dionne Warwick), “Always Something There to Remind Me” (Warwick, covered by Sandie Shaw), “24 Hours From Tulsa” (Gene Pitney) and “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (Warwick covered by Cilla Black). Though his own hit single “Trains and Boats and Planes” is included, Hit Maker! is a compilation of greatest hits, only performed by the composer instead of the singers normally associated with them. Even though vocals are missing the songs benefit from his further thoughts on their arrangements.

During the decade Burt Bacharach also added his signature sound to movies and TV shows including What’s New Pussycat, Casino Royale and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. His score for Butch Cassidy… won Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Song (“Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head”) plus a Golden Globe.

Interesting compilation of love songs. It does not include “Green Green Grass of Home” so that is a negative right off the bat for me. This seems very “thrown together” and I don’t recommend it as a purchase. Most of the performances are terribly orchestrated and the song selection pretty much stinks.

I have three or four other import CDs that I purchased over the years while trying to find the ultimate Tom Jones collection. Those CDs don’t fit the bill either. They turned out to be culled from the many TV performances of Jones and his guests from his variety show days of the Sixties.

Here’s the so-so Track List:

1. Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings
2. Never Give Away Love (Stereo Version)
3. Help Yourself
4. Dr. Love
5. It’s Not Unusual (2nd Studio Version)
6. When I Fall In Love
7. Hello Young Lovers
8. He’ll Have To Go
9. If You Go Away
10. Wichita Lineman
11. Let It Be Me
12. Love’s Been Good To Me
13. I Can’t Stop Loving You
14. What The World Needs Now Is Love
15. I Need Your Loving
16. Without You (Non C’e Che Lei)
17. If Ever I Would Leave You
18. I Was Made To Love Her

So I guess my search will continue on. If anyone has any suggestions I am quite open to hear them. I just want to have a nice collection of Tom’s greatest hits and best performed selections of his hey-day. I watched his TV variety show religiously and sorely miss it. Dude was a helluva performer!

Since I am not recommending this particular CD as a “must own” I decided to share with you some of Mr. Jones’ great live performances as found on youtube, instead of posting any of the mundance versions found on this particular compilation.
