Dr. Jean-Marie Luginbuhl, Professor, Department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, North Car

Dr. Jean-Marie Luginbuhl, Professor, Department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, North Carolina State University, will be the guest speaker at the SVMGA business meeting Thursday, December 10, 7 p.m., at the Halifax County Ag. Marketing Center. Dr. Luginbuhl, an extension specialist in meat goats, will focus on the importance of synchronized breeding of meat goats.

Some SVMGA members have heard Dr. Luginbuhl present programs on meat goats at various seminars and consider him an outstanding speaker. His topic is one that SVMGA members have suggested may help the association better meet the demands of buyers.

The following are excerpts from a 2002 Animal Science Facts publication, “Preparing Meat Goats for the Breeding Season,” published by Dr. Luginbuhl:

“Breeding in a very important aspect of any meat goat operation. But preparing the breeding does and buck(s) for the breeding season could have a large influence on the outcome and the profitability of the operation,” begins Dr. Luginbuhl’s article.

Failure to reproduce, low twinning rates and problems with milk may result if does are too thin or overly fat, the publication continues. “Overly fat does can suffer from pregnancy toxemia (ketosis) or dystocia, but fat does are rarely a problem.”

“Body condition, refers to the fleshiness of an animal. Simply looking at a goat and assigning it a body condition score can easily be misleading. Rather, does should be handled physically. The easiest areas to feel and touch to determine the body condition of an animal are over the ribs, on either side of the spine. In well-conditioned goats, the backbone does not protrude and is flush with the loin.”

Dr. Luginbuhl’s article explains that if the animal’s ribs are not visible and it has a smooth coat, then more than likely the doe will be in good condition. The body of does that are in relatively poor condition will look “angular.” Their rib bones will be visible and the backbone and edges of the loins will be sharply pointed and easily felt.

“Producers should develop an eye and a touch for the condition of their animals and strive to maintain a moderate amount of condition on their goats. The ideal body condition just before the breeding season can maximize the number of kids born.”

The animal specialist writes that the body condition of the buck is equally as important in the breeding process. When bucks are overfed, they may not have a desire to breed. On the other hand, he says, “bucks that are thin at the start of the breeding season may not have sufficient stamina to breed all the does.”

Increasing the amount of feed or forage approximately one month prior to putting the buck in with does that are not in the best of condition, will help these does put on weight and signal to the animal’s body that she is able to raise several kids. These internal signals help raise ovulation rates and can help to increase litter size.

“Does in extremely good body condition will tend not to respond to flushing,” says Dr. Luginbuhl. “Flushing can be accomplished by moving breeding does to a lush, nutritious pasture 3 to 4 weeks prior to the introduction of the buck. This cost-effective flushing method is underutilized in the Southeast where forage is abundant.

“The ‘buck effect’ or segregating the does from bucks is also crucial in the development of the sound (synchronized) breeding program,” the article continues, “Other important measures will affect breeding indirectly, such as trimming feet, the grouping of animals, de-worming, and vaccination. During the breeding season, does and bucks should be joined for 40 to 45 days, which is the length of time necessary for breeding does to complete two estrus cycles. A ratio of 20 to 30 does per buck is recommended for best breeding results.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear more interesting facts about preparing meat goats for breeding and synchronizing the breeding of your goat operation. Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 10, 7 p.m.

An 18 year old Italian girl tells her Mom that she is pregnant. Shouting, cursing, crying, the mother says, ‘who was the pig that did this to you? I want to know!’The girl picks up the phone and makes a call. Half an hour later, a Ferrari stops in front of their house. A mature and distinguished man with grey hair and impeccably dressed in an Armani suit steps out of the Ferrari and enters the house. He sits in the living room with the father, mother, and the girl and tells them: ‘Good morning, your daughter has informed me of the problem. I can’t marry her because of my personal family situation but I’ll take charge.I will pay all costs and provide for your daughter for the rest of her life. Additionally, if a girl is born, I will bequeath a Ferrari, 2 retail stores, a townhouse, a beach front villa, and a $2,000,000 bank account. If a boy is born, my legacywill be a couple of factories and a $4,000,000 bank account. If twins, they will receive a factory and $2,000,000 each.

However, if there is a miscarriage, what do you suggest I do?’

At this point, the father, who had remained silent, places a hand firmly on the man’s shoulder and tells him,’You try again.’
http://twitter.com/butterfly2

Every year I make a calendar of my photos to send to family. One year I made them on Snapfish. They were beautiful calendars, but the shipping was a wee bit high. No matter how many calendars I ordered, the same amount of shipping was added for each calendar. It was rather expensive at the end of the order.

The next year I ordered the calendars from Zazzle.

A couple months ago it was suggested that I turn one of my photography club’s assignments into note cards. I’ve made note cards before many times on Vista and am always very pleased with the results. But as I was beginning to prep for next year’s calendars, I decided to create the card on Zazzle just for fun. Before it was over, I had also created a store. Now I’ve added many more products to my Zazzle store developed from my most popular photographs with more in the works. In addition, I’m developing themes of products for inexpensive gift giving ideas throughout the year. Anyone can create products like note cards, coffee mugs, postage stamps and more on the site with or without the option to sell the items publicly. I leave it so that many of my products can be personalized by the buyers with their own messages.

For example, the mug below can be bought as is, or customized with something like “Happy Birthday Mom, Love Jane.”

This mug is blank in the middle with the photo on either side of the handle.

Or the buyer can purchase the same mug, but with one of several quotes I’ve already added on the mug.

Keep an eye on my new Zazzle store for new products being added all the time.

Step 3: Measure down 2cm from the top and in 2cm from each side. Now cut vertical lines 10.5 cm down. Do this on both Sides then join the cuts to make a flap.

Step 4: Score 1.5 cm from the bottom cut (only on the flap) Then at 4.5 cm and the last score line is at the top of the card between the beginning of the cuts.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-826" title="Happy Christmas Mate!
Step 5. Place adhesive along the bottom of the white tag. Then attach the tag to the 1.5 cm scored section of the flap only. This becomes the working mechanism.

Step 6. Attach the second piece of white to the base card and then stamp a greeting towards the top.

Step 7. The back and the front can now be stuck together.

Step 8. All that is left to do is decorate the card with your crimped card and attach the coloured image.

Step 9. Last of all attach the ribbon to the tag. This just makes it easier to push in and pull out.

<img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-858" title="Happy Christmas Mate!
After hearing all the obnoxious commercials for Black Friday ,I am convinced that the word for tomorrow is”GO “Whether you go easy or go for it is up to you. I am the go easy type! I refuse to get caught up in the hubub tomorrow and will take the time to consider what I really would like to give to each person. Other people enjoy the challenge of getting a good buy and a good gift at the same time. So if you go for it have fun , dont get mad ,and drive safely.

“Don’t make a big deal, it’s only an earring,” he replies sheepishly.
Hello Penguins! Screenhog here.

Lots of you are already Card-Jitsu Fire experts! But I wanted to give you some game info in case you haven’t had a chance to play the new game in the Fire Dojo yet:

<ins>General Stuff:</ins>

There are practice mats for 2, 3, and 4 players. You can play with friends there.

If you talk to Sensei, and you pick the “Earn your Fire Suit” option, he’ll set up a match. You get more experience points if you do this.

You can enter new offline trading card codes and you’ll get cards added to your online deck. You won’t see the animations in the Card-Jitsu Fire game but you can see them if you’re playing the original Card-Jitsu game.

<ins>How to Play:</ins>

On your turn, select the stone which determines the spaces you move, choose your tile (you have 2 options), and then you’ll pick your card to determine the outcome of the round.

If you land on one of these, – choose a card. The highest number wins. If you don’t have the element, you cannot win that round.

If you end up with this symbol, or if you land on the same space as an opponent, you’re going to have a Card-Jitsu battle – the elements determine the winner (water beats fire, etc. as in the original Card-Jitsu).

If you end up on this symbol, you get to choose which of the 3 elements you’d like to play!

If you’re playing and someone quits, you get the experience points. If you quit, you don’t get any points.

With all this exciting fire stuff, don’t forget the important element of snow… The Great Snow Maze and snowy sport celebrations start Friday at the Ski Village.

Wow! Look what Screenhog says about the new game:

Hello Penguins! Screenhog here.

Lots of you are already Card-Jitsu Fire experts! But I wanted to give you some game info in case you haven’t had a chance to play the new game in the Fire Dojo yet:

General Stuff:
There are practice mats for 2, 3, and 4 players. You can play with friends there.
If you talk to Sensei, and you pick the “Earn your Fire Suit” option, he’ll set up a match. You get more experience points if you do this.
You can enter new offline trading card codes and you’ll get cards added to your online deck. You won’t see the animations in the Card-Jitsu Fire game but you can see them if you’re playing the original Card-Jitsu game.

How to Play:
On your turn, select the stone which determines the spaces you move, choose your tile (you have 2 options), and then you’ll pick your card to determine the outcome of the round.
If you land on one of these, fire, snow, water, – choose a card. The highest number wins. If you don’t have the element, you cannot win that round.
If you end up with this symbol,(blue thing) or if you land on the same space as an opponent, you’re going to have a Card-Jitsu battle – the elements determine the winner (water beats fire, etc. as in the original Card-Jitsu).
If you end up on this symbol,(all 3 elements) you get to choose which of the 3 elements you’d like to play!
If you’re playing and someone quits, you get the experience points. If you quit, you don’t get any points.

With all this exciting fire stuff, don’t forget the important element of snow… The Great Snow Maze and snowy sport celebrations start Friday at the Ski Village.

_____

Nice huh (for members)! Laterz.

Paying homage to victims of the 26/11 carnage on the eve of its first anniversary, Prime Minister Ma

Paying homage to victims of the 26/11 carnage on the eve of its first anniversary, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Thursday that India “will not rest” till it has brought the perpetrators of the massacre to justice. Pakistan’s measures in this regard in the past 24 hours of formally charging seven suspects were good and welcome, he said at a press conference here, but he suggested that a lot more needs to be done, including dismantling the complete infrastructure of terror nurtured by Islamabad.

There was steely resolve in Prime Minister Singh’s voice as he prefaced his media interaction with a statement that left little doubt that New Delhi still regards Pakistan’s actions as cosmetic, timed with the anniversary of the carnage and possible meetings on the sidelines of the Commomwealth meeting in Trinidad where he heads to from here. He dismissed prospects of an engagement with Pakistan there, saying ”we cannot wish away Pakistan” and “when politicians meet they always talk,”

but it would not amount to much till Islamabad does more.

“We expect the masterminds of the attack and their supporters to be tried and punished. The infrastructure of
terrorism and all safe havens have to be dismantled, ” Singh said, in one of several comments that indicated there was no softening of India’s stand and New Delhi was still assessing the genuineness of Pakistani actions.

Singh also said he had been assured by the United States that its influence (on getting Pakistan to eliminate terrorism on its soil) will work. On a broader level, he said he heard no criticism during his U.S visit of India’s role in Afghanistan, and on the contrary, there was appreciation of India’s contribution there, a point that President Obama also made publicly.

Singh also dismissed Islamabad’s fears of war-talk from India, emphasising that it should take his word that India was for a strong, stable and peaceful Pakistan. “I have stated categorically that Pakistan has nothing to fear from India,” he said.

While the Pakistan question infected the interaction because of the somber overhang of 26/11, Prime Minister Singh also faced several questions on China to which he broadly said he came away assured that the United States was not handing over any supervisory role to Beijing in South Asia. “I am very satisfied with what President Obama had told me” in this regard, he said.

Overall, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with his visit to Washington, saying he was “leaving with a sense of confidence that my visit has deepened mutual understanding between India and the United States, and set new directions for our strategic partnership in a way that will advance our national interests.”

T minus 2 days til Black Friday! Let’s face it: Many of you dread bringing in the family/kids

T minus 2 days til Black Friday!

Let’s face it: Many of you dread bringing in the family/kids for holiday portraits. Traffic is everywhere, noses start running, and even as bellies become empty and diapers become full, the kids have to be at their best and those outfits must be perfect!

Well, it doesn’t have to be a stressful time. We understand how hard it is to get it all together, which is why we strive to offer a relaxed environment, exceptional service, and a fun experience. Yes–that’s right–FUN!

Even after the photo shoot (when your kids are running out of juice), we offer water bottles, toys, coloring, and lollipops to keep them happy and occupied while you make your selections.

Lots of Moms ask us what they can do to prepare for their holiday portrait session. So, we put together 10 tips for a great photo shoot. Enjoy!

1. Get your kids excited! During the weeks and days leading up to the big day, give your photography session a positive connotation. Talk about how they get to see themselves on the screen, or the special prize that they get if they do a good job. If you think about the event with anxiety and horror, so will they. Yes, there is a very important goal in mind–to get that perfect shot–but it’s also time you spend together as a family. It should be fun. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed they are.. and relaxed kids are excellent models!

2. Avoid naptime. When you’re booking an appointment that involves toddlers, it’s worth it to avoid that time of day when you enter the twilight zone and your toddler morphs from the sweet little munchkin your raised into that wild-eyed tantrum-beast you don’t recognize. Most of the time, you just can’t mess with nature.. and your session will go a lot smoother if the kids are awake and alert.

3. Set your clock ahead 10-15 minutes. Well, ok–you don’t have to go to that extreme, but always plan to be early. During the holidays, remember Murphy’s law–there will be traffic, you won’t be able to find parking, and the elevator will be broken. If you’re running early, there’s no reason to stress over those silly things…. and you’ll have plenty of time to change your kids before the photo shoot!

4. Don’t be afraid of the camera. You may not have expected to be in any of the portraits.. but we don’t charge extra for additional poses, so while you’re here.. why not? You’ve made the effort to come in, so make the best of your portrait session. It doesn’t affect your sitting fee! Or, maybe you DID plan on being in the pictures but you’re worried about your hair, the drool stain on your sweater, or the big scratch mark on your baby’s nose.. Again: the less you worry, the happier you look, and the glow of a happy moment can overcome any imperfect detail in a picture. Plus, we do a magical little thing called retouching!

5. Take off the shoes and stay awhile! As adorable as they are in that holiday-cheer-from-head-to-toe outfit, sometimes your child or toddler will be sitting down for a pose or two.. and chances are, the bottoms of their feet will be facing the camera. Bare piggies look so much cuter than the bottoms of shoes (which can be distracting and, well, unsightly). On a similar note, babies up to 9 or even 12 months old look adorable in just their their birthday suits. Try a few poses in their diaper or a diaper cover. They have great skin, and most babies are more comfortable that way anyhow!

6. Call as early as possible! Most of our studios are completely booked solid this time of year.. often a week in advance, sometimes 2 or 3 weeks! It’s never too early. Get it out of the way now. We’ll call you 2 days prior to the appointment as a reminder, and if you need to cancel or reschedule, of course you can (at no charge). Also, take into consideration that our holiday cards take between 1 and 2 weeks to produce, depending on the style.

7. Bring the survival kit. Here are some things I would include in my portrait survival kit:
-Extra clothes
-Personal items (like a favorite blankie or toy) you may want in the pictures
-Tissues or wet wipes (for boogers & drool)
-A comb
-Lint roller (if you don’t have any, we usually do)
-Diaper bag
-Bleach pen (for stains–they really work! I use the one from Clorox)

Of course, you can customize the list for your individual family’s needs.

8. Express yourself. If you have a particular idea in mind, voice it! Our photographers are ready and willing to listen, and do all they can to create what you want. Also, tell them anything else they should know–one of your kids is a little shy at first, they don’t like the “tickle stick,” or you’re really hoping to show off that outfit because it was a gift from Grandma.

9. Pick out your cards before you come in. If you really don’t like making decisions in the studio, we now post our entire selection of holiday cards on our website, in the card and border gallery! This way, you can check out our selection in the comfort and quiet of your own home. The cards have the same name on the website as they do in the studio, so ordering can be as quick and easy as you want. If you’re looking for more detailed pricing, send us a message or give us a call and we’d be happy to fill you in.

10. Personalize. Maybe your toddler has a favorite song, or your kids have a favorite game.. or your teenager can quote any scene from High School Musical. All of these things can break the ice and make the difference between a pouty portrait and a fun one that truly represents your personality as a family.. and that’s what portraits are all about!

She was wonderful, kind, patient and an excellent photographer. I wish I could have purchased all of the pictures. I had already exceeded my budget but it was well worth it.
“I had Jenn as a photographer and she was wonderful! I didn’t think there was any way a photographer could get my 4 year old twins and 16 month old son to smile all at the same time. Not only did she do it, but I had a hard time choosing because there were so many where they were all smiling. I ordered Christmas cards with the family picture and it is stunning. Thanks!” -Kate K. (Westfarms) 11/21/09

“Kathryn was FANTASTIC! Lovely, professional, patient! Especially given the amount of energy required to photograph our family! Thank you for a great experience! We will certainly come back for our family photos. Thank you!” -Lauri B. (Natick) 11/21/09

“Loved that the photographer was quick and efficient while shooting the kids. My children are 12 and 10 and were not thrilled at the prospect of having their pictures taken. It was over before they knew it and the photog was able to get some great shots.” -Michelle F. (Rockingham) 11/22/09
