This week in Visual Language we looked at the language of colour and how we perceive color.

We looked at how we get secondary and tertiary colours from primary colours, and how value, saturation and hue are associated with colour. We also looked at color schemes like monochromatic, complimentary, split complimentary, Triadic and Analogous. We learned how these schemes are created, how they work and the best way to apply them. Colour can be used to attract, create atmosphere, inform, structure, and teach.

We also looked at the work of Kandinsky and how he used colour to move the eye in different directions. We also learned that colours carry certain connotations. Black for example can represent

Darkness

Death

Despair

Dread

We also learned about perception and how the human eye works and the optical illusions can trick your eye into thinking that images are moving.

The Hamster Hotel in Nantes, France, is designed to give guests the total experience of being a hamster. They can exercise on a giant wheel, eat grain and sleep on a big pile of hay. No word on giant tubes to crawl through. From the Telegraph:

It is the latest venture from owners Frederic Tabary and Yann Falquerho, who run a company which rents out unusual venues to adventure-seekers. Both architects, the men designed the room in an 18th century building to resemble the inside of a hamster’s cage.

“The hamster in the world of children is that little cuddly animal. Often, the adults who come here have wanted or did have hamsters when they were small,” said Mr Falquerho, who was dressed as a hamster.

However, the price is soon to go up as today’s hamsters need, according to the owners, Wifi and a giant TV screen.

ok so technically its not a wheel, its a table. and my google’s translator leaves alot up to the imagination so im pretty certain it never was an actual wheel, though the price of 200,000 yen might beg to differ. still tho, 16.5 by 20!

Today we went in the Mac Suite in music (the teacher wasn’t in so we had to make yet another Powerpoint on a style of music) and nobody did much work. There was apparently two rows of people playing my game Stealth. Now I know it’s popular I think it’s time for a sequel. It shouldn’t take long because I can use the first game as a template, the only thing I need is inspiration for detailed level design. It gets boring thinking of levels and you get into the attitude where you try to stump the player with a ‘They’ll never get past this!’ kind of level. Also I think I’ll get James to help (It’s MattandJamesGames after all) so it’s slightly different.
When making sequels you need to change the game significantly to avoid being accused of reinventing the wheel, but not change certain parts and alienate the core fans.
Practice makes perfect…

The Singapore Flyer is supposed the be the world’s largest Ferris Wheel. It takes about 30 or 40 minutes to complete one cycle and from it you can see all of Singapore. You can also listen to a taped program about the history of Singapore. It is definitely worth doing.

Feng Shui (the art of receiving positive energy by positioning things correctly to achieve Qi or good engery) played a large part in many of the design aspects of Singapore. The Singapore Flyer is no exception. Originally the Flyer rotated counter-clockwise and it was determined that, according to Feng Shui principals, it should rotate clockwise. And, the change was made.

The top of the Ferris Wheel is 165 meters above the ground. But you ride totally enclosed in this capsule. You never feel like you will fall out and it is not a wobbly ride. It goes very slowly and never actually stops.

Here are some of the sights you will see.

I have to admit that when I heard Princes Street was to re-open to buses, taxi’s and cycles I was sceptical. Visiting Princes Street often for a variety of reasons it was hard not to notice the mess made to it by the current tram-works so when it was announced that it would re-open, albeit temporarily, on November 29th I have to admit I said “Ha, ha”.

I suppose the idea behind it is to have it all open for Christmas and New Year. After all, those two festivities would hardly be the same if Princes Street were completely closed off as it has been.

At the East end there is the German market plus the Christmas market, ice rink and big wheel plus some other attractions. These are all very hard to access when Princes Street is closed off. I’m sure the council pictured a nightmare when they thought of it.

Princes Street Gardens is always a hive of activity over Christmas and especially New Year so it made sense that it is completely open.

I believe that there was a slight delay of a couple of hours on Sunday the 29th of November but that Princes Street was opened fairly successfully.

I was there today, meeting a friend for dinner. I can’t say that I noticed anything special about the street being re-opened, it barely felt like it had been closed. There were a lot of people wandering about looking for their bus-stop as Lothian Buses haven’t necessarily returned them all to the same place but they have done their best in helping people to locate them. Every Lothian Bus has had leaflets placed on them and the signs are fairly readable on the bus stops, plus bus-trackers have been installed. So hopefully people weren’t put out too much by the transition.

Happy travelling,

Everyone who has been on the Web even a little knows the importance of the use of mouse wheels, scro

Everyone who has been on the Web even a little knows the importance of the use of mouse wheels, scrolling pages, zooming in Google Maps, mouse wheel gestures in Opera 9 browser, and many more. It is almost impossible now to find a mouse without wheel. However, not many Web applications’ developers know how to make smart use of mouse wheel. Therefore, I decided to make this little tutorial to provide general information on how to handle mouse-wheel-generated events in JavaScript.

There are some images that are not very clear because of page size limitations. You can click on any image to see it in full size.

First, the thing you should know about mouse wheels is that they do not have an absolute system. Therefore, the only way to capture the wheel actions is via a parameter called delta, which is the mouse wheel angle changes. The delta parameter takes positive and negative values; if the wheel is scrolled up- which means the page is scrolled down- delta is positive, if the wheel is scrolled down- which mean the page is scrolled up- delta is negative. The handle function takes on that delta parameter. This function should be modified by you to handle the wheel actions:

The actual values of delta depend on the sensitivity of the mouse. However, for optimization, the code is adjusted so that the values of delta are either -1 or +1. Also note that delta takes different values between the Internet Explorer, Opera, and Mozilla Firefox browsers. For example, in Opera and Firefox, delta takes a different sign than that of Internet Explorer, and in Firefox, the value of delta is always a multiple of 3. Here is the event handler code:

The following part is optional. This piece of code is to prevent the default actions caused by the mouse wheel. You may want to do that because you are already handling scrolls somehow:

The initialization code:

And that is it. Now you can handle mouse wheel actions easily anyway you want using the handle function. Note that this code has been tested only with recent versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari browsers. I have no idea if it will work with other browsers or not.

Hope this was useful. I would really love it if you tried it and sent me your feedback. And again, if you know a good programming trick that you believe not many people know, please let me know. Wait for a new programming trick next month. Until then, happy coding!

But for ~250$ new, i’m sure it’s not something you feel like voiding your warranty over. and let me repeat – this WILL void your warranty, especially if you are a messy modder.

Good thing you have a guide like this, with plenty of pictures to base your modding decision on.

I went as far as removing the shifter knob, and shifter boot to realize i don’t want to mess around inside of it, and for the most part i use the paddle shifters (with the exception of a few muscle cars).

1. Your going to need the proper tools, here are a few i used. You’re going to need a few allen wrenches, and a few phillips head screw drivers, plus (unless you’re super manly) a set of vice grips/pliers to make sure you don’t strip anything out.

*side note: If you get stuck you can use the vice grips to hold on to your screw drivers like so:

2. Start by removing the allen bolts that circle the shift knob in an X-Pattern. If you are unfamiliar with the X-Pattern you should kill yourself.

3. Once you have the bolts removed, pull a tad bit up on the leather shift boot to lift it off the shifter housing, you can pry gently with a flat head screw driver if you want..

4. Obviously, you need to remove the shifter to completely remove it. Go ahead and take a small flat head screw driver (or just use your fingernail as i did) to remove the cap.

5. There is a phillips head screw with washer on the inside of the shift knob. Unscrew it from the shifter, but do not unscrew it from the knob, this way you won’t lose any important parts! Lift the knob up, and remove the boot.

6. Now you can see the inner workings of your H-Pattern shifter. Pretty cool. There are 3 hidden screws around the top of the shifter housing. They are very tight. do NOT strip them.

7. if you decide to go any further, there are some other hidden screws on the bottom, and you have to remove the fast clamp mounts on the bottom of the shifter. This is where i called it quits. i decided there wasn’t any need for me to go any further.

For you it might be a different story.. I more or less, just wanted to see the inner workings of my beloved G25, There are many guides out there on Google about how to do the actual modding, I just wanted to give everyone a better idea of what they are getting themselves into. I, as a Mechanic for 3 years decided I didn’t want to mod it, partly because I didn’t have the materials, and partly because the shifter is “fine”.

Good luck to all of the other modders out there!

Not really sure what happened to the weekend – vanished in a puff of ethereal smoke (or was th

Not really sure what happened to the weekend – vanished in a puff of ethereal smoke (or was that just a cloud of MDF dust that got so dense it momentarily became self-aware?). The workshop is covered in the stuff, despite 20 cubic metres/hr of air filtration, and the 2HP TruPro dusty. Some of the tools are insufficiently (dust) guarded, particularly the router table, which, being under significant rework has lost connection to the standard collection system. If all the MDF dust got wet, it’d probably papier mache together into to a mold that I could cast copies of Stu’s Shed from.

Come the end of the current project, there will have to be a major cleanup/dust-off out there, and a vow (which I typically can never stick to) of not starting any more projects until the proper systems are fully in place and working.

I was out there last last night (hope the neighbours are still talking with me!) fighting to get the kitchens close to completion.

Aaron from Torque Workcentres came for a visit yesterday morning (we started the day at 6:30am to get the maximum possible done), and we got my Torque Workcentre running like an impressively well oiled machine (or not, as the case may be – inside joke). It is working exceedingly well – the main arm that supports the tool (router typically) now glides along the X axis with the lightest touch of a finger. There are more adjustments for the machine than I was aware of – there has been a lot of thought put into the engineering, and it really makes a difference all the subtle tweaks that can be done. I’ll document those in future articles.

I was going to have the MDF top flush with the cast iron router table, but late last night got sick of trying to get it all sorted, so decided instead to stick with how it was originally designed, and mounted the MDF directly to the workcentre. I still maintained the cast iron router table at one end, and just accepted I’ve lost some working range. It isn’t a huge amount, and it may not have any real impact on me anyway – time will tell. I was using the router table, and the Torque Workcentre happily last night, so both router positions are well justified. If you don’t have/need a cast iron router table, then cutting an opening for the router mounting plate at the right end of the table, directly into the MDF is a good solution.

I didn’t photograph it, but I set the pin routing guide into the table – this is a metal pin with a small diameter end (7mm) that engages into a template channel so the overhead router cuts identical items. In this case, my “channel” was a single hole, and the router was offset to one side, resulting in probably the easiest circle I have ever cut or routed. Ever!

In this case, I was only routing a partial depth pattern – a circle cut with a cove bit, repeated in 4 locations and with 2 different diameters to produce the stove ‘elements’

Kitchen Detail

I was quickly switching from tablesaw, bandsaw, disk sander, linisher, router table, torque workcentre, drill press and Domino, turning out component after component. When a workshop is set up properly, it is amazing how easy and quickly tasks become.

Cut an opening for a sink? Done. Duplicate the opening on the router table? Done. Stack-cut a handle for the oven, then round the edges? Done. Join it accurately and strongly to the project? Done. Elements cut, wheels made. Fun stuff.

Cutting Toy Wheels

Using the Carb-i-tool wheel cutter, scrap MDF was utilised to produce stacks of wheels. Here the Lidwig Claw can be seen being used to good effect, holding the 4″ dust collection hose right at the point of shaving and dust creation.

So a profitable weekend – just don’t know where it went so fast. There is still a few small tasks to do to finish the cabinets off, then they can head out to their new homes for painting, and playing.

Product Description

Forget processed supermarket parmesan cheese; authentic Parmigiano Reggiano is a whole story altogether. Classified as DOP cheese, Parmegiano’s methods of production are strictly controlled by a consortium. Traditionally, Parmigiano is used shaved over pastas and salads, or dipped into aged Aceto Balsamico. Dry and hard due to its extremely long aging, Parmegiano has a granular texture that easily breaks into slivers – irresistible to pop into the mouth.

So I went out on Thursday Nov,26,2009 and picked up Forza 3 along with a official xbox 360 steering

So I went out on Thursday Nov,26,2009 and picked up Forza 3 along with a official xbox 360 steering wheel.I have been playing Forza 2 for along time now with a controller and a wheel borrowed from a friend. So I beat most of forza 2’s single player using the controller which was fun but afterwords I tried out the wheel. The wheel was alright but for $99 + tax I didn’t fined it worth buying unless it would be used for multiple split screen like a arcade only at home. Forza 2 which had very basically split screen multilayer which wasn’t all there, yet still a blast against a friend. The Problem was only having one wheel, Always needing to share it and then there’s always the advantage or disadvantage of playing against your friend on a wheel while you use a controller.

So before forza 3 came out i had began looking for a used xbox 360 wheel, why used you might say? well buying a used xbox wheel will be about half the price and most people who buy a xbox wheel or any steering wheel either use it alot or barley at all, theirs usually no in between so you find one which have been barely used at all and you have just saved your self a bunch of money congratulations. Now its your turn to either use it a little or a lot but at least you wont loss much money if you only use it a little this way . Now that we have 2 wheels it was time to Race!

-So away I went trying out the single player a little bit to see how good the wheel was I bought and to see how forza 3 was compared to forza 2.Lets just say Graphically it has improved which is nice to see and the tracks feel less smooth which makes it so much fun Everything seemed Great. It was Time to get into some great racing with a friend in forza 3 split screen oh i couldn’t wait since forza 2 was good and now we had 2 wheels .
So we First started out with F Cars only we spent about 1hr playing with only F cars, theirs just so many cars its ridiculous. when we moved on the E cars, There were even more cars The list of cars was never going to stop we were loving just this fact alone we spend another hour just on E cars but we had keep changing tracks just to see what the courses would be like, lets just say there better then ever not just because theirs Soooo many to choose from the fact that they all look great but they also drive very realistically compaired to forza 2, Since before it very smooth tracks now there more bumps like I mention before which just adds alot of fun. this was as far as we had gotten before it was time to stop playing but this game has blown our minds we cant help but want to play it more, The split screen multiple this time around can have 2cpu player which is a nice feature which forza 2 really need.

In conclusion go take alook at the forza3 demo and what you see there will be what you get. Ill be busy playing forza 3 for along long long………. Time! see yea next time if i ever come back from forza 3
