John W. Young is the commander of space shuttle Columbia’s maiden flight. This mission marks several precedents in the history of NASA. The most important one is that a maiden flight has never been manned before. Understandably, that made John apprehensive to an extent. Years later, as part of an interview for the excellent documentary When We Left Earth, he shares this wonderful tidbit of wisdom:

Anybody [who] thinks they can statistically predict when something with 2 million moving parts is gonna fail is sorta smoking something they shouldn’t be, probably. Yeah…

My top TV episodes of 2008: 10 – Fringe: Pilot / Leverage: The Nigerian Job This was a bit of

My top TV episodes of 2008:

10 – Fringe: Pilot / Leverage: The Nigerian Job

This was a bit of a tie, because both these shows aren’t all that great, but they are fun to watch. Fringe was one that I was really looking forwards to, and I’ve been somewhat disappointed by how it’s been handled over the season that I’ve watched thus far. Hopefully I’ll get to marathon the entire thing at some point. That being said, the pilot for the show was very fun to watch – it was interesting, had a fun concept and was so over the top that it’s laughable, but again, fun.
Leverage is a show that I’ve started watching because I like Heist shows, and this one is certainly one of the better ones that I’ve seen, ever since the show Smith a couple years ago. There’s a fun cast dynamic and some good hooks in this episode for future episodes.

9 – Big Bang Theory: The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis
I’ve been wary of this show until this season, and now, I’ve really gotten into it for some reason. The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis really takes the show away from some of the easy jabs at the characters and makes some room for some real character development at the end. Plus, the following quote from Leonard is just plain gold:

Do you know what this means? If I can get a healthy ovum, I can grow my own Leonard Nimoy!

8 – Barack Obama 30 Minute TV Spot
No matter what side of the aisle you support, this TV spot was a brilliant move on the part of the Obama administration. It consumed a news cycle of talk show, talking heads and really outlined the priorities of the incoming administration and helped put Pres/Elect Obama into the lead, furthering his momentum. I personally was a supported of the Democratic Ticket, and while this TV spot showed us nothing terribly new to supporters, and essentially reiterated his position, it was a good introduction to people who still weren’t sure who to support.

7 – John Adams: Join or Die
The John Adams miniseries was a very well done series based off of the book by David McCullough by the same title. This pilot episode demonstrated fantastic production values and is an outstanding adaptation of history, from the characters and casting to the look and feel of the sets. These first episodes showed the American War for Independence, a crucial time in our history, in a way that has largely been glossed over in a few short lessons in school.

6 – Lost: The Constant
This was possibly one of my favorite episodes of the entire series, where Desmond begins his own time jumps back and forth through. While Lost has overdone the lifes of some of the other characters like Jack and Kate, this episode really got into Desmond’s head and proved that the writers could still write compelling and interesting characters, while advancing the story forward while doing so, rather than just exploition on why the characters are the way they are.

5 - Battlestar Galactica: Revelations
Episode 410 of Battlestar Galactica brings the show to a point that we’ve been looking for for the past four years on the show : Earth. Four of the last unknown Cylons come forward to their friends, and Kara finally leads the fleet to the people, only to find a devastated landscape. There was a lot of emotion and storylines caught up here. Characters were not what their friends thought they were, and the episode represents a culmination of a number of storylines, and ends on a killer cliffhanger.

4 – Pushing Daisies: Comfort Food
I’m very sad to see this show go – it’s one of my absolute favorites. Comfort Food follows Ned and Olive during a cooking contest, while Chuck has brought her father back to life, at the cost of Dwight Dixon. This was the end/middle of a mini-arc, and it really does a fantastic job with both Ned and Chuck – Chuck with seeing her father return, and Ned for having his trust betrayed. And there’s a Colonel who’s been deep fried.

3 – When We Left Earth: Landing the Eagle / The Explorers
This year was the 50th Anniversary of NASA, and to celebrate, Discovery released a documentary on NASA’s human exploration of the solar system. This episode, Landing the Eagle, details the Apollo program through to Apollo 11, while The Explorers follows the remaining five moon landings. The footage here is absolutely stunning, and even includes interviews with Neil Armstrong. I get chills watching the landing.

2 – Life on Mars: Out Here in the Fields
I was very skeptical about the remake, and the first pilot didn’t leave me with any confidence here at all. But Out Here in the Fields, the second pilot to the UK remake, helped to allay my fears that this would be a poorly done show and showed not only could this re-make be a good one, but one that would stand on its own, with its own qualities. I can’t wait for its return later on.

1 – House, MD : Wilson’s Heart
Season 4 of House was pretty lackluster. The change up with new staff only marginally worked, and while we saw some new characters, they’re not quite to the point of Chase, Cameron and Foreman. The newcomers are interesting, but too similar, except for the fanatic character Amber, whom I can’t stand. This episode made me entirely rethink her character, but also saw an incredible amount into the characters of House and Wilson. These episodes of House are the best ones, when we see real development, and it’s happening fewer and further between episodes now. The last ten or so minutes of this episode are possibly the best minutes of the show that I’ve seen yet.

This view from the Apollo 8, looking at the Earth from above the moon, is one of the most beautiful,

This view from the Apollo 8, looking at the Earth from above the moon, is one of the most beautiful, and amazing pictures, I must say. This episode was all about the Apollo and Spacelab programs, read on to see what it’s all about~

The primary objective was to get man to the moon – from orbiting the moon, to making a lunar lander and learning how to use it, to finally setting foot on the lunar landscape. It all had to start with getting a rocket out of the Earth’s gravitational pull, and to do that, they created the Saturn V rocket. Remember when we all went to Kennedy Space Center and saw that GIANT rocket inside the building? It’s THAT one. From Apollo 11 to Apollo 17, astronauts (for example, the most well-known one of all, Neil Armstrong), astronauts were able to set their feet upon the moon’s surface, walk across it, and take samples of lunar rocks and soil to bring back to Earth for further research.

There was one exception – Apollo 13. This mission was almost a disaster; the electrical systems failed, and oxygen was leaking out of the ship. With 3 days to return back, and carbon dioxide (a buildup could create poisonous air) building up, it was unsure if they could make it back alive. With a makeshift filter, they were able to reduce the carbon levels, and made it back safely. As said on the show, first priority was bringing the crew back safe, not mission success.

The skylab project’s objective was to show astronauts could be left in space for extended periods of time, to do research and experiments in a space-like, weightless environment. It started out rough though, with Skylab 1 being non-functional after a shock to the system during launch. Afterwards, with skylab 2 and 3, the project allowed astronauts to survive and function in space, so extensive research and experiments could be done.

I don’t know, but it was a random though to think about that flag that was put on the moon on the first moonwalk. Is it still there? Is it still standing and in perfect condition? Who knows, hopefully I’ll get to see it someday, and look at the Earth from the Moon like the crew from Apollo 8 (and all the other crews) got to see.

The Discovery Channel’s airing of “When We Left Earth,” a documentary compiled of footage and narration from astronauts and engineers who participated in historic NASA missions. From John Glenn’s Mercury mission to orbit the earth, to Neil Armstrong’s first historic steps on the moon, to the spacewalks required to repair the Hubble telescope, “When We Left Earth” comes at a time when space is making a resurgence in our cultural consciousness.

The Web site has several interactive animations, interviews and clips offered as supplements to the documentary, but the animation pertaining most to Space 2.0 is the excellent “NASA In Your Home.” It allows users to explore everyday household items — from bicycle helmets to bathroom sinks to mattresses and many others — to see how space derived technology has made so many of the things we use better, more comfortable and more efficient. Yet all this is so interwoven with out society that we don’t realize how much of this technology emanated from the space program.

The renewed interest in space is coinciding with a more widespread realization that many of the technologies we’ve become accustomed to are space-derived. “NASA In Your Home” illustrates this point perfectly by exposing the technology and materials taken directly from space applications and showing how they fit in to our lives.

“When We Left Earth” aims to restore the magic and wonder the nation was swept away with when the legendary NASA explorations were happening. By combining vintage space nostalgia with current and future Space 2.0 applications, the Discovery Channel is building some exciting momentum for the space community and beyond.

It was the first (or first two? I can’t remember if they’re doing two 1-hour episodes each time, or if it’s one two-hour episode, or just a two-hour premiere special?) day of Discovery Channel’s “When We Left Earth.”

In short, it is all about the history of our journey into space – the first episode being about sub-orbit experimentation, trying to rally back against the Soviet Union’s push into space, all the way to spacewalks and EVAs (Extra-vehicular activities, which means going outside of the spaceship to do work or experiments.).

Why am I writing this?
1. I enjoy space, and wondering what’s out there; and this is all about how it began. If it weren’t for the space race and human curiosity, we would not have the chance to find out what is out there, or how it feels to be in space.
2. I know friends (from Japan) are going to enjoy hearing about this; knowing the enjoyment they had from taking them to Kennedy Space Center, and the Shuttle Endeavour launch on March 11 (I remember being up that late, and they had school the next day, after getting home at 4am).

The Mercury Project was all about getting a man into orbit around the earth, starting with the experimental Chimpanzee named Ham, to see how he would react to sub-orbit conditions. A series of seven rocket launches would gradually get from sub-orbit “up-and down” (They would go up into sub-orbit, then come right back down, into the ocean), up to the final Mercury flight with John Glenn and a 3 orbit journey.

The Gemini project was next, and was a series of rocket launches with not one – but two people this time. They also experimented with docking spaceships together, and with weightlessness.

To be honest, writing it all down doesn’t compare to watching it all. From hearing it straight from the astronauts themselves, to seeing and hearing footage from the rocket launches, it’s all so interesting and amazing. If I could buy my friends in Japan the DVDs, I really would…but then there’s always the region limitations.

If you all read this, let me know what you wanna know about the show! There are two rocket launches in October, and I will take pictures of both of them for you all!

OK, I’ve been waiting for this since I saw the trailer played in a movie theater before “Prince Caspian” in May. If space travel doesn’t give you you goosebumps, then I think you should check this out for sure. If it does already, then you don’t need me to tell you this looks like it’s going to be awesome.

Here is how the mini-series is described on the Discovery Channel site:

When We Left Earth is the story of mankind’s greatest adventure, leaving the earth and living in space. For the first time this series has digitally re-mastered the original film and audio recordings from NASA’s vault, including and all the key on-board footage filmed by the astronauts themselves. From John Glenn’s Mercury mission to orbit the earth, to Neil Armstrong’s first historic steps on the moon, to the unprecedented spacewalks required to repair the Hubble telescope, these epic stories are shown in stunning clarity and told by the astronauts and engineers who were there.

This week’s episode:

ORDINARY SUPERMAN
Premieres Sunday, June 8 at 9:00 p.m. E/P
NASA selects seven men to become the first astronauts. They’re all test pilots, prepared to risk their lives. No one has ever survived a vertical launch on top of a rocket, but it’s the only way they know to put an astronaut into earth orbit. The Mercury astronauts and engineers need to figure out how to launch a man into space on top of a converted intercontinental ballistic missile.

FRIENDS AND RIVALS
Premieres Sunday, June 8 at 10:00 p.m. E/P
For Project Gemini, a new generation of astronauts arrive at NASA — their mission, to test all the procedures required to land men on the moon and bring them safely back to earth. Each Gemini mission launches two men into space, leading to some of NASA’s greatest moments — Ed White’s spacewalk, the first orbital rendezvous of Gemini 6 and 7.

I know my friend Scott has been waiting for this, and I know he didn’t need anyone to tell him it was the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” playing in the background of the trailer, either.

If you have The Discovery Channel on your cable or satellite system, and you are a fan of the space program (which you probably are, if you’re reading this) you should check out a great six-part program that begins on Sunday evening, June 8th.

Titled “When We Left Earth,” this miniseries gives an overview of the fifty years of NASA, using footage seen and also footage previously not seen by the public in many years. And what is even more incredible, NASA worked with the Discovery Channel in converting all those old film and video reels into high definition format, for a stunning visual feast.

Spanning the timeline from the choice of the original Mercury Seven astronauts to the mission of the International Space Station, “When We Left Earth” is a must-see for any space enthusiast, or anyone who has ever gazed up in the night sky in wonder, wishing they could experience what’s out there.

The Discovery Channel website has an extensive area devoted to this program, with interactive timelines, information, and games. Please check it out.

And after you have seen this breakthrough miniseries, you can pick it up on DVD (regular and the spectacular Blu-Ray editions) on July 10th.

So “check your local listings” as to when this program will be seen in your area.
