Waldo. What a guy. First of all, where the hell is he going with that big back pack. There’s no end place with him, is there? The places this man goes! All the places he visits are these weird, hectic, crazy, full places. There is a person, literally, every 2 feet from you. Not even! I don’t know how he does it. If I was in a place like in this picture, I would fear for my life. I would also most likely get lost, throw up, fall, fall then throw up or just cry. People are scary, large groups of people are scarier. And half the time, people are doing crazy shit, throwing stuff and running, falling, tripping or spitting. It’s nuts! Who would want to be in a place like that? Where people are falling and spitting all over you? Waldo, that’s who.

People also seem to like to wear the same thing as him. I never knew striped red shirts were so popular. Horizontal stripes are definitely not good for figures, that’s for sure.

why did I do that
I am so confused
would I rather continue a fantasy
am I sure this is going nowhere

nothing but more questions
and more disappointment
why did he ask me to remind him
and why does he insist it was meaningless

three hearts at stake
and apparently only two were broken
why do I hate myself
for letting myself feel
all this about him

he surely wanted me
I can still feel it
he doesn’t want to forget about me
but wants to pretend
he was just a friend

friends don’t dance real slow
with their arms pulling you close
and friends don’t kiss your mouth
a hundred times

a friend would tell the truth
and be real about his feelings
a friend would not walk away
then chalk it up to lusty dealings

a friend who’s still a friend
fourteen years after he kissed you
might be a friend worth keeping
and, what of your hunch he missed you

maybe he’s just a someday kind of love

why does he want to know where you are and
just how far he was from you
if he doesn’t want to feel your heart
or put his arms around you

is there something in him so damn cold
that he feels the need to hurt you
what is it that makes this ok
or bothers him about you

it’s not me
it’s really him
are his hands not meant for mine
but yet
I find
I can’t forget
his lips like sweet red wine

his words like oil
on my skin
his wishes
like a blessing
desire
forbidden
noncommittal
unrealized love
and guessing

maybe it’s enough – this one-way love
no thoughts of can’t or will
I’ll send it out and up above
and just hope his soul will fill

everyone deserves a family
and I have mine at home
he has his too
and it’s not through
so I’ll leave him alone

Where Do I stand?

In this world of heaviness,

In this world of silliness,

Where do I stand?

I like being with the powerful,

But I hate being the powerful,

So, where do I stand?

There are good people, there are bad ones,

There are neutral too,

Where do I stand?

When are you going to see who am I,

When am I going to see my inner self?

I don’t know what to do,

So, where do I stand?

I like flying like a kite,

Gliding with the air wherever it goes,

You may find me in thin air,

Where do I stand?

But today I ask God,

When is my time going to come?

And, when do I know where do I stand?

Slowly, slowly he tells me everything,

And gives me a prominent place in his heart!

It is so easy to place God in a box. But again and again we find that God cannot be confined to our little categories. One large way we have managed to push God’s penetrating presence out of our world is by the way we think of and imagine Heaven. I think Heaven can be thought of in at least three different ways: a presence, a time, and a place.

A. First, Heaven is wherever the PRESENCE of God dwells and where His will is perfectly accomplished. That is why we pray, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done here on earth as it already is in Heaven.” Ask any Third Grader “where God lives”, and they will probably say, “In Heaven.” True enough; but this raises the bigger question of “And where is Heaven?” Here our neat little categories break down. Is Heaven here on earth? No. Well, is Heaven somewhere else? I think so. But that means that God lives somewhere other than here. And that goes squarely against what the Bible says about where God resides. The Bible says:

“Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I get away from your presence? If I went up to heaven, you would be there; if I lay down in the world of the dead, you would be there. If I flew away beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west, you would be there to lead me, you would be there to help me” (Psa 139:7-12).

Or, again the Bible says:

“I am a God who is everywhere and not in one place only. No one can hide where I cannot see them. Do you not know that I am everywhere in heaven and on earth” (Jer 23:23-24)?

I think we tend to think of reality in very simple, concrete, inflexible ways. We like “either-or” categories. But it seems like the Bible forces us to see Heaven or “Where God’s presence dwells” in a more dynamic way. Here’s some of my thoughts. On the one hand, God is omnipresent. He is everywhere. He cannot be pinned down to Fourth St. and Washington Avenue, for instance. Yet, he is indeed there, too.

On the other hand, God has chosen to dwell more intensely, in a more penetrating way at different earthly locations throughout history. He chose to be present in the cloud by day and the fire by night with the Israelites in their exodus from Egypt. He chose to have His glory—his Shekina—dwell in the tabernacle during their time in the wilderness. Then in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, His overpowering presence was concentrated in a special way behind the curtain in the Holy of Holies.

Then the Eternal, Invisible, All-Powerful God of the Heavens became flesh and “dwelled (or tabernacled) among us” (John 1) in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Most remarkable of all, is that the New Testament then proclaims that Jesus followers, “the church”, is now the new Temple where God’s presence is most visible and active. Awesome!

B. Second, Heaven is A TIME in the future when all things are again as God desires them to be. The Jewish way of thinking about these things is to break history into two ages: (1) the Present Evil Age & (2) the Age to Come or Messianic Age. They saw themselves living in the present evil age where things are not as God desires them, where evil, death, suffering and brokenness are at home. Yet, they looked forward to the promised Coming Age when, as the prophets continually reminded them, God would send a Messiah to usher in His the Glorious renewal of everything, when God would again be King and the nations (and the entire created order) would again live peaceably together under His benevolent rule.

The Old Testament talks very little about the afterlife, and when it does it quite vague. To put it quite bluntly: Jews didn’t walk around wondering who was going to heaven or hell when they died. They were quite confident that God would provide for them in the Age to Come. All who were part of the family of Abraham were quite secure in their covenant relationship.

So, while the people of God in the Old Testament times or in Jesus’ day were typically not speculating about a place called heaven where they might go after they breathed their last, they instead spent most of their time and energy trying to live out their covenant vows (their faith) here and now. They were living on tip-toes, always looking forward to when and how God would act within history to bring his world back into proper order. That is, they were awaiting the arrival of his Messiah and God’s Kingdom!

The New Testament announces that that Glorious Age to Come was breaking into history in and through Jesus, but that the Present Evil Age was still not completely eradicated. In other words, today the church is living in the overlapping of the ages; God’s Kingdom is present already through the mission of the church, but it is not yet here in its entirety.

Likewise, the Present Evil Age and the powers of darkness have received its fatal blow with the Cross and Resurrection, but it is still not completely overthrown. We live in a strange “in-between” time where God’s Kingdom is working to destroy the Kingdom of Darkness. Whose side are you on?

C. Finally, Heaven is a future PLACE where the righteous will dwell for all eternity with in perfect harmony with God, neighbor and nature. So, where is it? Let me be clear that I really don’t know. But I tend to think that God is in the business of restoring (and not destroying) the present earth to its original glory, for humanity to live again in peace and harmony with nature, and to see us at last fulfilling the original purpose for which we were created in the first place. God works in mysterious ways, but it seems absurd to create something for a particular purpose, to have the plan fall through because of human sin and rebellion, and so to then ultimately destroy it completely and start over in another space and time universe. That makes God kind of weak (or even a failure) in my opinion.

I believe God’s original purpose was for humanity to live as His co-creators, as his divine image-bearers, wisely caring for his earth and cultivating communities of love and creativity that join in the dance of the Triune God. That is something we have yet to see, and something I believe God will in time bring to fruition. God’s original creation is too beautiful, to magnificent, and too perfect to throw away in the cosmic dump.

I’m joining God’s people of old, those who stood on tip-toe, in eager anticipation for that glorious Age to Come of which the prophets told. I’m awaiting a Savior from “heaven” who will come again to “make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). And so I get down on my knees and pray as Jesus taught us to pray:

“Our Father in the heavens,
Holy is Your Name,
Your Kingdom Come
Your will be done,
On earth as it already is in heaven…”

SUMMARY: I’m not going to pretend to know what/where/when Heaven is. Yet, as I immerse myself in the world, mindset, and writings of the Biblical prophets and apostles, I am led to believe that Heaven will not be some otherworldly cloudy place far removed from God’s good creation. Rather, I believe it will be a God’s creation restored in all its beauty and grandeur, with God’s beloved children living out their original purpose in their glorified, incorruptible, resurrected bodies! I believe heaven will have much in common with this present earth, but I leave plenty of room for there to be many wonderfully magnificent differences as well.

Everyone’s talking about Avatar and Alice. Even ComiCon had it’s moments with a potentia

Everyone’s talking about Avatar and Alice. Even ComiCon had it’s moments with a potential stampede when rumors about Depp stopping by quickly spread. At least that’s how I describe it, since I had to duck and cover. But, there’s something more interesting in theaters today.

I went to a screening of Bong Joon-ho’s latest film, MOTHER. It is a funny, creepy, exciting murder mystery that also explores the mother-son relationship. And, yet another example of the latest cinematic talent out of Asia.

Hong Kong dominated for years, giving the west stars like Jackie Chan and directors like John Woo to fall in love with. Hollywood has had a long relationship with Asian cinema. The Pang Brothers minimalist horror film, Gin Gwai was remade as The Eye. Andy Lau’s Infernal Affairs 1,2 and 3 were merged to become The Departed. And, Japan’s Takashi Shimizu brought us his own remake of The Grudge.

Korean Cinema, sometimes referred to as Han Cinema, brings something new to the mix. The latest wave of movies out of Korea cannot be held in a narrow category. One thing they do have in common is the unexpected angle used. Stories that have been told since cinema began are updated and given new and broader perspectives. The subject matter ranges wildly from romance-starring septuagenarian lovers, to horror-where the monster is revealed immediately, to history-taking on brotherhood, loyalty and the effect of history on the present during the Korean War in the 1950’s, to mystery-a woman in ancient Korea use forensic science to solve a murder.

Last year, Na Hong-jin premiered his first film, The Chaser. It was picked up by an American studio before it even hit the film festival circuit. I’m curious but wary of how American film will deal with a story with a sympathetic serial killer and corrupt ex-cop/pimp as the hero. But, it’s due out in 2010, and rumored to star DiCaprio. That’s a story that could only come out of Korean Cinema today.

This is inspirational for design, marketing, branding, etc, because it shows how a creative mind can tell the same old story in a new way. The old quote, “There’s nothing new under the sun” is often used to discourage designers and artists. It may be true, but how you look at and how you show the same old, same old can create something new.

Ok, lets see: I’ve read 16 of these, gave up on another and have 2 in-progress.

I think there are a few good books missing:

1) “The C Programming Language” – Kernighan and Ritche. Not only a great book about programming, especially for beginners, it also shows how clear a programming text can be, how little needs to be said, and how to spiral around the same problems with increasingly capable and complicated programs.

2) “The C++ Programming Language” – Stroustrup. By comparison to C, a much thicker book, containing K&R’s language and a whole lot more, for practical coding and for object oriented techniques.

3) “Kahn on Codes” – Herman Kahn A huge book and one that ends in the era where crypto was still a government issue, mostly. But a great history, and clear proof that no cypher system, or code book, is 100% unbreakable.

4) “Seizing the Enigma” – most complete discussion of BREAKING Enigma I’ve seen so far. There are any number of good lessons here, starting with, a small, motivated, team can accomplish what is considered impossible. Never treat the opposition with contempt. Define your requirements as well as you can, do what you can to satisfy them, pay attention to what actually happens.

The actual analytic technique to break Enigma was cooked up by two Polish intelligence officers who could see how the wind was blowing in the late 1930s. When the Germans invaded, they escaped with their method and presented it to the French. The French passed it on to the British before they collapsed. The technique wouldn’t do for rapid recovery of plain text from a well operated system but it could break in by brute force, with some time, and it could also rapidly exploit any laxness in technique by the cypher users. Whereas the Germans believed that Enigma was essentially unbreakable and never seriously looked for its weaknesses, or their own in using it.

Code and cipher trade-craft was good in the Kriegsmarine, so-so in the Wehrmacht and lousy in the Luftwaffe, oddly echoing Hitler’s complaint that he had a Christian Navy, a Reactionary Army and only one National Socialist (Nazi) armed force, the Luftwaffe. The Brits mounted a frontal assault on Luftwaffe Enigma traffic and got what they needed because of bad practices by the users. With the Wehrmacht they got enough to combine with conventional intelligence, what the Soviets gave them from “Lucy”, from the Italians sending cables to each other, etc., to get the job done. The Kriegsmarine used Enigma intelligently, so that frontal assaults hit a blank wall. Fortune gave the Brits the keys, the initial rotor position for each message, occasionally, and they knew what they were missing, so they made it their business to GET the keys, through espionage, Soviet salvage of a sunken German ship, the capture of a shipboard weather station in the North Atlantic, the US Navy’s capture of U-505. Every six months when the key changed, they had to get the new one and did, EACH TIME. And tight security at the Allied end allowed the Germans, all of them, to ignore any suspicion that their cyphers and codes were less than 100% secure. They had no “Red Team”s, or even someone looking at the pattern of Allied luck in finding lone U boats, bombing the right place at the right time, etc. Convinced of their own superiority, like the Japanese, they caught “victory disease” and when the tide turned, retained a confidence that events did NOT justify. Lucky for us.

Last night and this morning my mom and I have been watching a Hallmark movie called “The Note

Last night and this morning my mom and I have been watching a Hallmark movie called “The Note”. Haven’t finished it yet, but I saw the end to this same movie last year, so I know where it’s headed.

Anyway, in this movie, the protagonist is a column writer for a town newspaper and, during the course of the movie, writes her columns about her adventures trying to find the owner of “the note”. Her words, spoken from the heart, are shown to affect countless people and make them think about their own lives. She speaks of events and relationships without naming names, and that makes it more personal for everyone.

I would like, somehow, to do the same. I would like to look out across the day and see something in the world that is true for many people and bring it to light, to make people consider those thoughts and how they may apply to them. Not every post will touch everyone in the same way; it may reach deeper into the heart for one person than it did for another. I would love if all my posts could resemble this one, giving you some experience I had during the day and how it relates to other things.

Because this task will be more challenging than my previous goal, I will no longer be writing daily. Instead, I plan to try to write at least three times a week, or every other day. Often times, at least for me, I balk when I set a physical goal for myself, when something that is suppose to be voluntary grows into a “have to”. I don’t want this blog to be a “have to”. As soon as it does, it will lose the spirit that I want it to have. This blog became a “have to” several weeks ago, and that’s why there are spans where I did not write anything. I’d lost the spirit of the blog. I didn’t want to do it anymore.

I hope that with this new goal in mind, I’ll be able to impart, through my own experiences and musings, something for you to draw upon, to make you think. It would be wonderful if, as I am learning these things, you can learn something as well.

That is what I learned today.

Ahh what must I say? What is burning deep? I just wrote in my journal and it is so different than writing on here at times. I tend to do more poetry in my journal…on here I feel I am talking to someone more…but talking the way I wish I always could. I guess I am on here to say I feel so deeply. My heart pounds full of life and love. I am blessed. So blessed beyond blessed. I am so unsure of my next step but excited about what it is and what is to come! I am trying not to figure it all out but to take it one day at a time. Yes, I am still confused but God will guide me with his mighty hand…day by day a little at a time. All in time…all in time…all one day at a time…..

For the last five years I’ve heard, read or been told that “this is the year of mobile.

For the last five years I’ve heard, read or been told that “this is the year of mobile.” Well, I don’t think it’s a matter of a year of mobile. Rather I think its a progression of the way data flows and the ubiquity of better devices.

And as data flow gets better (despite what my friends at ATT are saying) and devices get better 2010 may finally be the year of what was called LBS (Location Based Services) a long time ago. And by long I mean three years ago.

Now there are core mobile based products like Foursquare, Gowalla, Aloqua, Where that let a user find friends, locations, places, things to do all based on current location and a database.

Now this should be hugely appealing to sales folks and brands because when I am in the heart of Manhattan and looking for a burrito chances are the top item closest to me wins–and that has value. The problem right now is figuring out what that value is.

The other problem is conveying that value.

Yeah, any sales person will tell you its all bout location.

And any brand will tell you its all about proximity

But is this the year it all comes together?

Honestly. Not that I mind my blog being viewed, it is very. . .unexpected? I was browsing my stats today and saw a spike disproportional to the rest of my graph. 0,0,2,0,1,0,0,0,16,0. . .

I mean, 16? True, that’s sadly low for a wepage. But going by the pattern above. . . I’m just surprised. Not in a bad way.

It can show signs of good. Lately I have been itching to put up a few posts on the most awesome Utena, Evangelion, adn Princess Tutu AMVs for one of my past anime clubs to refer too. Of course there will be more than just those anime. . .but you have to start somewhere, ne?

Either way, this weblog needs a serious overhaul in it’s organization. Therefore I am off to spend a good few hours on that. If anybody has any useful information (such as how to create sub-pages, etc) it would be greatly appreciated. If not. Eh. I’ve got. . .3 days to kill?

Until next post (you mysterious 16 people. . . )

This visual merchandising event has been created by Tokujin Yoshioka. It’s more of an art installation than visual merchandising. The combination of the iconic Hermès scarf with a larger than life photo of a beautiful, local actress-the face of Maison Hermès, would have been enough. What makes this true design is the next step. Tokujin goes beyond 2D, or even 3D, to offer a live experience for the viewer.

Name: WHERE
Category: Navigation
Price: Free
Available on: iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Palm

Description: WHERE® allows you to quickly launch a mobile experience that puts the people, places and things you look for at your fingertips while on the go. Local content available through WHERE includes everything from the weather, news, and restaurant reviews, to the closest coffee shop, cheapest gas, traffic updates, movie show times and more. WHERE also helps you reach your destination with easy to use maps and directions.

WHERE makes you feel like a local, no matter what city you are in.

My review: Wow, they weren’t kidding when they said this was the most comprehensive navigation app out there. Developed by uLocateCommunications, The app uses your current location and grabs all the local information it can for you. Find lowest gas prices, the weather, news, restaurant reviews, nearest Starbucks, events, traffic conditions, hotels, movies and showtimes, sports, and more. Another cool feature is WHERE Connect, which lets you chat with other users around the country. The app definitely does what it says.

Gas prices: Sorted by ‘within 1.0 mi’ to ‘within 2.0mi’. Gas stations are organized from cheapest to most expensive. Tells you when it was last updated, and the nicest part is it let’s you change grades (regular, midgrade, premium, diesel, bio diesel, and E-85). Click ‘map’ to see all stations in the area.

Weather: uses accuweather.com browser inside the app

News: Compiles news from a variety of sources. Categories include: local news, top US news, top sports, top entertainment, top technology, and top strange.

Restaurant reviews: Uses Citysearch to find local restaurants – get business information and reviews from other users.

Events: Finds events in your area – search by date and category! Find them on the map and get the description, directions, and share with friends with email.

Movies: Sorted by box office, fan rated, new releases, coming soon, and theatres. Click on your selected movie to find showtimes at your local theatres.

There are a number of nice features the developers put into the app, making it a useful little thing. However, there are a couple of things I don’t like about it. One of them is the ad at the bottom of the page. It pops open at random times, making you accidentally click on it. One example was when I tried clicking on ‘more results’ and the ad popped up on top of the link. How dasterdly! Another gripe I have is that the app is pretty laggy. Pages take a while to load, and scrolling isn’t smooth.
