I have to admit that I have absolutely no idea what to do with this picture. I’m hoping you’ll know.

Caption this!

Dagens låttips: While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Puss!

Haven’t posted in a while, and I thought I’d share some clips from the Muppet Show. The first two both feature three puppets made to look like the puppeteers, Jim Henson, Frank Oz, and Jerry Nelson.

The first one is called Going to Morrow, and is an American folk song. I love the verbal confusion running amok in it. The way the muppets bounce up and down to the beat of the song is great, too.

Then there is You Don’t Want My Love. I just have to laugh at this one. It’s al together silly. And I love it.

I couldn’t find more of Jim, Jerry, and Frank together, unfortunately.I did find Floyd from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem playing a pretty good cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, though.

A música é Fireflies, do Owl City:”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-4ln_sXty0

E que se eu comprasse, as primeiras músicas que eu iria tocar seriam I Am The Walrus e While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Edit 2: “Oh.

Meu.

Deus.

A introdução do Beatles Rock Band é fantástica.

Crianças prodígio me irritam, e países asiáticos estão cheios delas.

Sungha tocando While My Guitar Gently Weeps dos Beatles:

Gosto do Sungha, mas ainda prefiro as originais:

Sunday (catch up) reading list:

Firstly, the Rolling Stone article on whys and hows of the Beatles breaking up. I knew a lot of this stuff from my youthful days as a Beatles fan and just a nerdy kid with a lot of classic rock trivia stored in my melon, but it’s still interesting to take it all back in.

The Beatles’ likeness from their incarnation of Rock Band.

Especially since it really narrows all three and a half of them (sorry, Ringo, but you may as well have been a cardboard cutout or on luudes throughout the 60s) to their sincerely petty little faults and jealousies. Paul comes off as a control freak who put both his three mates and the music ahead of how his three mates felt about him or the music, and John Lennon, whom we always knew was a little messed up guy, finally went overboard and tried to change who he was while battling Paul for either the soul of the band or the right to be the one who finally killed it dead. While there was definitely “the Yoko factor,” it was more just a tool of John’s used against the rest of the band, especially Paul who he felt had taken more power and was more creative/talented/happier than he. Talk about two guys who needed each other, but couldn’t express it…

On an only semi-related note: Liam Gallagher has quit Oasis for like the seven billionth time. “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,” he says. Sounds like somebody needs themselves a champagne supernova.

Secondly, this quote: “Craig Newmark] already has a parking space, a hummingbird feeder, a small home with a view, and a shower with strong water pressure. What else is he supposed to want?” That’s from an article in Wired about the founder of Craigslist that I started the other day and haven’t quite finished yet. So far, though, it’s interesting.

Also in the magazine is an article I’ve also only skimmed about people who’ve faked their own deaths and essentially vanished or disappeared or gone on the run (though, obviously, not totally successfully). What a fascinating idea. Like you haven’t thought about it before. How would you fake your own death? How would you disappear?

Unfortunately I’m a bit late writing this, seeing as the concert was on Friday night, so already the details are getting a little bit fuzzy. However I would like to preface this whole post by saying that this was the most incredible night of my life. Everything about the show was simply spot on. This was my first time seeing Phish live and it turned out to be a lucky night to do so because I’ve heard a lot of hardcore Phish fans saying this was the best show they’ve ever been to and one of (if not the) best show on their summer tour so far.

The band was clearly having a ton of fun on stage and that translated into a captivating performance. Every jam session was incredible and mind-blowing, and the set list was simply amazing. Although the whole thing was a highlight itself, my absolute favorite moments were “Fly Famous Mockingbird”, “Down with Disease”, “Slave to the Traffic Light”, “Piper”, “Icculus”, and the genius cover of the Talking Heads song “Psycho Killer”. Not to mention the hilarious “Catapult”, the encore performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and the groove of “Stash”. Most of that was from the second set, which was truly an hour and a half or so of bliss.

Our seats were literally perfect. We were dead center and just a few rows up (probably 6 or 7). I was pretty much eye level with Trey the entire night. I don’t know how Charlie managed to get hold of these tickets but they were worth every penny of whatever they costed. The lights were also genius, perfectly capturing the mood of the band and adding so much energy to the performance.

Honestly, I could rave on and on about how fantastic and utterly perfect this night was, but I’ll spare you. Simply put, I have Phish to thank for one of best experiences of my life, and I will certainly get to one of their shows whenever possible. If you want to hear this show for yourself, it is available for a reasonable price at livephish.com.

For many of you, any Beatles set list was going to be satisfying, but I am not the biggest Beatles fan. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate them for their historical importance, influence, and even a lot of their music, but they have never ranked among my favorites.

That being said, I am a big fan of George Harrison.

So, onto the set list. The complete list of tracks is available at GameSpy.

The high points for me are:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps – Ranks among my favorite songs ever. The song is written by Harrison, but the extensive solo work is Eric Clapton (w00t!). It will be years before I can actually play the solo, but I’ve got the rhythm guitar down.

Here Comes the Sun – This song is just incredible.

Taxman - Another Harrison classic.

Helter Skelter - This song still feels so uncharacteristically edgy and aggressive to me.

Something

I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

Octopus’s Garden – The SCUBA diver in me has a soft spot for this song.

There are a number of other interesting tunes on the list, but those are the ones that excite me at first glance.

The presence of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes the Sun really sell me on the game. Who knows, maybe this game will increase my appreciation of the Beatles. It wouldn’t be the first time that a music game has made me see brilliance in music that I had previously ignored (See Dinosaur Jr. & the Killers).

The Beatles: Rock Band is due out on September 9.

The Beatles released a self title album in 1969, which is better known as The White Album. What could be called a slapped together piece which contains perhaps the dregs of their back catalogue has some of the best songs that they ever wrote. It was their highest selling record… and four brave men took it on last night at the Opera House in celebration of the 40th anniversary.

The four musical souls that covered this classic masterpiece was Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Josh Pyke, Tim Rogers (You Am I) and Chris Cheney (Living End). All well known Australian musical acts, and four very different musical talents. Perhaps that was the brilliance behind Tim Woods (producer) idea, as the White Album seems to encapsule the different musical stokes of The Beatles, and in bringing together these four musicians in just seems to work.

The opening song, Back in the USSRperformed by Chris Cheney set the mood, all the hype we had heard was well worth it and we weren’t disappointed. Although it was his performance of While My Guitar Gently Weepsthat blew the socks off my feet – and according to The White Album Concert Facebook wall I wasn’t the only one. Not a big Living End fan, I had never seen Cheney perform before, but the solo during this song proved he was a worthy choice. It seemed to suck you in, and suddenly the only thing that mattered at that moment was whether he would ever end the magnificent sound that was extended from his guitar. A personal highlight of the performance. His other performance of Birthday, Savoy Truffle and Helter Skelter bring his voice and guitar together also, and deliver a pleasant experience to the crowd.

Dear Prudence, performed by Phil Jamieson was the second song of the night. Jamieson’s voice, much improved since Grinspoon recorded their first track after being Unearthed by Triple J, wrapped around you and reawakened the beautiful harmony. I was impressed, and I am a fan. I do hope that everyone noted his performance of I Will, the song his wife walked down the isle to. Bringing back memories for him I’m sure, but its clear the song wasn’t just chosen for nostalgic reasons, Jamieson brought much to that song and pulled it off. His best performance by far was Yer Blues, closer to any Grinspoon song, he let loose and pulled all his tricks (climbing onto speakers). It seemed a natural song for him to perform, and it was definately a natural reaction to experience it.

Tim Rogers was first spotted on stage for Ob La Di Ob La Dain what seemed to be a green suede suit. Joined for a while by Jamieson and Cheney, the crowd awoke, bopping to the well-known, catchy tune and giving us a chance to appreciate three of the performers at the same time, although Rogers voice did seem to lack when directly compared to the other two stronger vocalists, his stage performace made up for that. Rogers, by default of choice, proceeded to re-enact the quirky tunes off the album (although Jamieson got Honey Pie and did as good a job as Rogers as quirky), Bungalow Bill, Happiness is a Warm Gun and Piggies. In what seemed like a resurection of the 60’s, John Lennon or perhaps just his poetic self, Rogers brought the entertainment if not his voice to all songs performed. His best by far was Revolution 9, once again linked to the artists past of a babysitter playing it to him as he went to sleep, hyponopaedia perhaps to blame for such a great rendition of this classic song.

Last, but definately not least, is Josh Pike’s almost shy performances. Like a full stop at the end of a sentance, without him the true differences of The While Album may have been swept under the carpet. Listening to Cheney belt out his amazing performance (which included guitar tricks) of Helter Skelter, and then to turn to Pyke’s gentle performance of Long Long Longcouldn’t have been pulled off by any other artist. Pyke took the soft songs, such as Blackbird and Martha My Dear (his first on stage) and owned them. Without any changes they just seemed to belongto him in a way that went beyond the other performers. In the program Pyke talks about being intimidated by the concert and his fellow performers. Do not worry Pyke, you and your voice proved deserving to be there with the other brilliant performers.

As well as the stars, there were many other people on the stage that night who added to the magic. Special mention to the backup singers, the in sync twin drummers and the violinists which hypnotised me at one stage. The pPianist brought it for Birthday, watching him and Cheney ‘rock out’ was pretty amazing.

Thank you all who was on stage, or behind it. A Brilliant Night. When is the DVD out?

We’re Christians? I thought we were pagan heathens who will burn burn burn.

Actually, you’re probably right; I get along well enough with Jesus and pieces of the bible. I just prefer to worship an attractive, voluptuous woman who wants me, rather then an old guy with a beard. And take over the world with mad science! Mwahahaha!

Anyways, now is probably a good time to play some of the non SFA tracks I’ve had sitting around.

First, I’m going to play a piece by a group called The Muffin Men, a Frank Zappa cover band. Get this; it’s the opening riff from the Beatles song I Want You, mixed with Frank Zappa’s King Kong, with occassional other bits. Works suprisingly well.

“I want you Kong. I want you so baaaaad...”

Not quite as good, but I still thought this was entertaining. “Contri” and “Wessturn” are playing together, but have rather different ideas of what song they are playing in this video. One is doing Zappa’s My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama, and the other is doing Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps, resulting in While My Guitar Gently Wants To Kill Your Mama And Weeps.

On June 6, 1987, The Prince’s Trust organized an “All Star” concert at Wembley Arena. While the 1986 concert was hailed for a rare Paul McCartney performance, the 1987 Gala brought George Harrison and Ringo Starr on stage.

The highlight of the concert was a rare live performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” by George Harrison, with help from some of his friends—Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler, Howard Jones, Ray Cooper, Midge Ure, Jeff Lynne and Mike King.

The live performance at The Prince’s Trust All-Star Gala was the first time Harrison had performed live in England since 1967, and one of the few times he performed the song with Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr, both of whom were involved in the original 1968 recording of the song at Abbey Road Studios.

The story of the song goes back to the famed Beatles WHITE ALBUM. According to Harrison, the inspiration for the song came from reading the I Ching, which, as he put it, “seemed to me to be based on the Eastern concept that everything is relative to everything else, as opposed to the Western view that things are merely coincidental.”

Harrison decided to test out this idea. While at his parents’ home in the North of England, Harrison committed to write a song based on the first words he saw upon opening a random book. Those first words were “gently weeps.”

The song was intended to be a lament for humanity following the devastating news of 1968–the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, the riots at the Chicago Democratic convention, and the escalating conflict between youth counter-culture and American repressive tactics, especially by the police and the marches organized as dissent over the war in Vietnam.

When Harrison brought the song to the attention of the other Beatles, he was met with a lukewarm reception. One day when Harrison was giving Eric Clapton a ride, he suggested that Clapton come to the studio and play lead guitar.

Harrison later recalled, “…I was with Eric and I was going into the session and I said, ‘We’re going to do this song. Come on and play on it.’ He said, ‘Oh no. I can’t do that. Nobody ever plays on Beatles’ records.’ I said, ‘Look, it’s my song and I want you to play on it.’ So Eric came in and the other guys were as good as gold because he was there. Also, it left me free to do the vocal and play rhythm. Then, we listened to it back and he said, ‘Ah, there’s a problem, though, it’s not Beatley enough.’ So, we put it through the ADT (automatic double tracker) to wobble it a bit.”

The Prince’s Trust performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a mythical event in rock history. Clapton on guitar. Harrison singing. Phil Collins and Ringo on drums, and an all-star gathering that included some of the world’s top musical talent.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was ranked #135 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

The song was also ranked #7 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar songs of all time.

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it need sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know why nobody told you
how to unfold you love
I don’t know how someone controlled you
they bought and sold you

I look at the world and I notice it’s turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know how you were diverted
you were perverted too
I don’t know how you were inverted
no one alerted you

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at you all
Still my guitar gently weeps

Oh, oh, oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah
