The ongoing Gwen Bell “Best of 2009″ idea continues with: What book – fiction or non – touched you? Where were you when you read it? Have you bought and given away multiple copies?

I got back into the groove of reading this year, and I couldn’t be happier! I read a lot of great stuff, but if I had to choose my top three, they would be:

1.The Road

2.Derby Girl

3. Coraline (read the book before the movie)

These three couldn’t be more different if they tried, yet they all gripped me so that I couldn’t put them down, and thinking about them makes me remeber exactly where I was reading them. The funny thing about all three though, was that they were all made into movies this year too!

1. I started reading The Road because I wanted to finish it before the movie came out. It is a smaller book, but by no means is it an easy read. Cormac mcCarthy manages to pack a punch with very little dialogue. I read a lot of this by globe light curled up in bed, thankful I had a warm bed to snuggle into unlike The Man and The Boy. The emotions are so raw and really, their love is all they have to survive.

2. I read this on the train to Albuquerque and finished it very quickly. I wished this book was around when I was in high school. I know it will be a book I will give to my daughter to let her know it’s okay to be different. Shauna Cross is an engaging writer who instead of letting you watch a scene unfold brings you in and makes you her bff through her speech.

3. This one I read in a rental car in rainy L.A. in February. I remembered the trees around me were all gnarled and crazy bodhi-esque, so I curled up with my blanket and dove into my book. I am happy to say the movie is aesthetic-wise, just how it was imagined in my mind. This is a book I will be giving to my kids (and nieces and nephews) with a message that a girl can do anything she sets her mind to. Including rescuing her parents.

By the by, three books I love to reread: Weetzie Bat, Warrior of the Light, and DV.

My least favorite idiom is, by far, the concept of the double-edged sword. Why can’t someone ever just wholeheartedly enjoy something? There always has to be downside. Well, this whole roller derby thing has officially developed into a double-edged sword. I’m still obsessed and having a blast, but I just found out that the tryouts are capped at 100 girls and no more than 15 will make it. Shit. I think I’m good, but I don’t know about that good.

The second skills night went pretty well. I’ve got the basic skills down – crossovers, stopping, power strides – but now they’re throwing in derby skills, namely blocking. I’m skinny but it’s not the force that overtakes me, it’s this whole skating low thing. Skating low is the key to roller derby. It helps in every facet: speed, stability and, most importantly, blocking. If you stay super low, odds are, another girl will have a much harder time knocking you over. On the other hand, if you’re standing tall, you’re practically a rolling target. When it comes to throwing a block, you’ll be way ahead of the competition in a lower position. You don’t block someone with your arm alone; you’re blocking your opponent with your entire body and that requires the power to forcefully pop up from the low derby stance. The lower you are, the more power you’ll have.

“In 65, I was 17 and running up one by one…”

The soundtrack at Barnes and Noble was surprisingly good.

Not only was there was a cool cover (non-Nouvelle Vague) of “Dancing with Myself” but there was also some Fine Young Cannibals, Devo and Donna Summers’ “Hot Stuff”, which was partially an inspiration for a one-act play that ranks among the favorite things I’ve written.

I took out my phone to send out a multi-text, a common occurrence for me, distinguished from a mass-text message (“Hay guyz new phon numba! Just tlln u 4 kiks!”) by that it usually contains selective information, as in “Hey you want to see a movie?” to people I usually see movies with, “Brother/Sister plays tomorrow” to potential play-goers and “If it wasn’t Oswald, then who gave Ted that brain cancer and who’s next, you?” to Ro-shaved-off-his-fucking-beardo Malone and Jason Lee simultaneously.

This time it was a simple askance that came out before its recipients:

“Opinions on Devo?”

As a youth, I’m sure I had heard the song “Whip It” around, unexplained, but I didn’t gain full consciousness of it until, like several other musical discoveries, I found them through parody, with a licorice-whipping Smithers on The Simpsons singing some lyrics in a brief aside during a performance of “I Want Candy” by “The Simpson Family Smile Time Variety Hour”. It was a good episode. Looking back on that show, I credit it for much of my good familial experiences and interests (similar to Animaniacs in that respect) but still resent the writers for being Harvard grads.

The people who went to Harvard from my school were douches.

I don’t remember who they were but yeah, I’m sure of it.

Except for that one kid who got a scholarship and whose single mom raised three kids.

And that other one from the projects who got to go to Italy as a result.

Fuck.

Anyway, the obvious recipients were taken care of first. Consider, this was an extremely esoteric text coming out of nowhere on a random subject that could possibly disrupt the day of somebody doing something important. So of course, I had to send it to Rob and Jason Lee, since the only thing Jason was probably fucking with Photoshop and Rob’s idea of “something important” was playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

Next were spacial considerations. I had found out from an article or somewhere while trolling about movies that Devo was from Ohio. Thus I was probably obligated to text-message the two Ohioans I knew most prominently: Chadd Harbold and Mike Sweeny. There were problems with both of these recipients. I had just ditched out on Mike after a good 4-hour of chunk of waiting with him at his job selling Christmas trees on Hudson St and playing pool at the off-duty policeman’s bar nearby. It’d be a little strange to send him a text, 15 minutes after leaving him to fend for himself at Filene’s Basement (no thanks).

As for Chadd, the last time I had tried to do something Ohio-y for him it was singing Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Ohio” at a Karaoke night, with a dedication to “Chadd from Ohio”.

It turned out you can listen to a song with a funky beat and some good guitar solos and never realize how depressing it is.

Shit, man. That song’s about people getting gunned down who are like 20. That it happens in Ohio is like a fucking travesty.

The point being it can be hard to figure this out until you are face-to-face with the lyrics on a blinking electronic-blue screen, highlighted for your following convenience.

It turned out to be kind of a downer.

I didn’t text an old not-girlfriend of mine who I knew was a fan because I already knew her opinion and I thought I had drummed up a solid group.

Jason never answered.

Rob said “They’re fantastic. Now what the fuck do you want from me?”

Mike said “They’re from Ohio, thus awesome.”

and Chadd said “what’s that?”

“Chadd’s from Ohio and he doesn’t know ‘em.” I told Mike.

“We sure he’s from Ohio?” Mike replied.

“Well he’s actually in Ohio right now. So where’s your cred?” I texted.

“I AM Ohio.” He proclaimed.

And there was nothing really I could say to that.

I went back to reading “The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide” in the auditorium section of the fourth floor of Barnes and Noble, trying to learn what I could and excited to read the book and steal the serial code from the back of it so I could sign up for the author’s “member-only one-hundred-percent film-festival resource-guide”.

I signed up using the same phone I’d sent all the texts with.

Hours earlier, when Mike Sweeny and I had been walking to Barnes and Noble, he almost ditched out because I was replying to a text while walking.

“Don’t you think you’re missing out on a certain degree of reality when you do that? Stare down like that?” Mike asked.

“What? I’m trying to reply to a text message, jesus Mike.”

“That’s the problem.” Mike said. “You’re always in it, you’re not experiencing life.”

“I think this is how people experience life nowadays, or how they will.” I posited, putting forth some questionable phiosophical futurism.

“Well, that’s a sad world then.” Mike replied.

“What?” I asked. “Sorry, another text.”

***

Normally a vacation might inspire relief, but free time only makes me anxious and waiting, all the more.

It was a dark week at my work this week and so I was given dispensation to stay at home, see movies, do whatever I do. I only have two more weeks left at my job though and I’m not getting paid, so I feel like somehow I’d rather be at work. Instead. I took time out to see plays, watch a movie or two, spend time with my girlfriend and go completely ape-shit insane about Sundance acceptances, a call that was supposed to be made on Wednesday.

How insane you might ask? How bat-shit-bonkers have I gone over waiting?

I joined Twitter.

It’s very, very depressing.

The story goes something like this.

I spent the week, as I’ve spent the past two virtually, refreshing the Withoutabox “Submission Status” website, checking it periodically throughout the day to make sure that there were no message from festivals, no rejections or missing DVDs, no requests for press kits or other crazy things. To be honest, I didn’t know what I should expect: I had never seen anything but tranquil information from my Withoutabox home page. But in the startling event that there was, that there WAS something. Well, damnit. I would be there.

As the week and then the day of phone calls arrived, I took it to another level, coordinating via text-message on a tri-hourly basis with my friends who had concurrent submissions to Sundance, combing the web for information and reporting back.

It’s unclear why this Sundance mania had taken me. I had bearish about my chances there to everyone, including myself. I had been much more enthusiastic about Nashville, where one of my lead actors had been asked to speak last year, or Cannes Cinefondation who, presented with my endorsement from the filmmaker Antonio Campos, literally “cooed” at me over the phone from France.

But perhaps it was the club-ishness, the secret notification-before-a-notification of it all that had me wild, that there was a supposed “day” in which your fate would be decided and that all of us, the whole film’s-cool-crew–we would all know at once, like a bolt of lightning at the pearly gates (that I’d believe in if I wasn’t a Jew).

It was struck by this mania that I joined Twitter.

First, I just searched without joining, figuring that short filmmakers were probably in to that whole “new media” thing. If senator could do, then why the fuck not them? It was instant, I didn’t have to know the people, like on Facebook. Like my Google Voice account, I could search “Sundance” and people’s voices, their conversations would appear.

But then when someone said they were accepted, I wanted to know more, wanted to see more, wanted to hear what that meant. As Wednesday passed and none of us heard, I took the leap and joined.

It’s Friday now and the offices at Sundance are closed for the weekend, the same break that anyone at any other job would get, including my parents.

My friends and co-conspirators have concluded that notifications will be given next week, a sentiment echoed by a sage teacher of mine, who I talked to on Wednesday, Sharon Badal.

For now, the “Twitterverse” is quiet, with my search results only turning up feature news (which Sundance releases in spurts) and deals on spas and sofas.

Next week will come and go and what may happen will.

But the mortgage on my virtual soul that has been made.

That is something much more troublesome.

There’s fresh, seasoned turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, apple pie and so much more. Well, that’s if you opt for the Thanksgiving Dinner for 6 from Fairway Market. So is life in a house sans cook.

It’s that time of year again and while I’m looking forward to some family time and a feast a la supermarket, I can’t help but to dream of what my ideal holiday dinner might be like. I’m most thankful for my family, but I’m also grateful that I’m able to make movies such a large part of my life, hence the fresh-out-of-the-oven Film Thanksgiving Dinner is born.

Check out my dream team of movie characters of 2009 who’ll help me trash the pre-made meal and celebrate Thanksgiving the way it should be, with homemade eats, a little entertainment and even some clean-up assistance.

Men nej.

No, it is not a joke. DEVO is actually alive and well…and touring. Having a 2-year old I have been entertained by Mark Mothersbaugh’s (lead singer of DEVO) cameo’s on Nickelodeon’s Yo Gabba Gabba kids show, but never thought that DEVO was still alive and well. Appearently DEVO is playing in New York City’s Irving Plaza tonight 11/21 and in Toronto on Monday and Tuesday, cool!

DEVO has been playing the same city two nights in a row intentionally in order play both albums Are We Not Men? and Freedom Of Choice each night in their entirety, what a killer idea! Brace yourself Toronto, I’m sure it will be a great show.

11/23 & 11/24 Toronto, Canada – Pheonix Concert Center

Why don’t more bands do this? Could you imagine if Rush played Hemispheres and 2112 night one and Moving Pictures and Counterparts night 2? Or Metallica playing Kill em’ All night and Black night night one, perhaps Justice for All and Ride The Lightning night two? I think that DEVO might be on to something…eh?

I’m happy to hear that DEVO still has a following since they were definitely a defining sound of the 1980’s when I was growing up.

The directional debut for actress Drew Barrymore comes off as a pleasant surprise. Whip It might not be a groundbreaking movie by any means, nor is it going to raise any Oscar buzz this year or so I would think but however on the plus side of it all Drew Barrymore has turned over a really good start to her directing career.

The movie stars Ellen Page as a young girl trying to find herself and what it is she loves while trying to appease her mother who tends to hold her back from what she truly wants to do. What I did enjoy is even with a character like the mother in this movie I found that I did not really dislike any of the characters being portrayed at all. The movie itself leads you to feel like the characters involved are very human and as a result you feel a better connection with each of them.

Ellen Page is her role proves once again why she has tremendous potential as an actress in Hollywood. Page turns over a fantastic performance which might be the only one that could get a nod come Oscar season.

The movie is a sports based underdog story which does not fall victim to cliche’s of the genre. What we are inevitably left with here is a well presented, interesting, and overall feel good human story. I applaud Drew Barrymore for her turn as a director and look forward to more feature films from her.

Putting aside Devo’s eccentricities for the moment, the gents from Akron, Ohio, chart a pretty good arc into New Wave music for an American band.

Seized with anger over typical punk themes ranging from broken politics to broken promises to broken hearts, Devo struck out in the traditionally blue-collar state of Ohio as a punk band for the art set, putting philosophical meanderings and literary allusions into a jumpy, frenetic repertoire dominated by guitars.

But as Devo’s range grew, they so fully embraced synthesizers so that by the time of their third album Freedom of Choice, they were creating some great American New Wave music. Devo came around to the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, for two nights in a row Sunday and Monday. Sunday, they performed their first album in its entirety plus encores and the like. Monday, they performed their amazingly catchy third album in its entirety.

The concert performance was tremendous and fully demonstrated why these songs withstand the test of time so well. Devo kicked off the concert with “Girl U Want,” following the album’s tracklist, and the crowd was already in a very good mood, dancing up a storm, and singing along by the time of the trademark “Whip It” as the third song.

The show, in my opinion, reached a crescendo with “Freedom of Choice” and “Gates of Steel”-two quintessential Devo songs that make for terrific dance numbers. Hearing those numbers live really brought home the dynamic and the energy and the message for me and really made the show.

My only real complaint is that a self-indulgent encore of “Beautiful World” went on for way too long due in part to a meandering and oddly backhanded tribute to Michael Jackson, of all things.

They made up for it in part by closing with a very Devoesque cover of Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man.”

As an aside, we here at Secret Circuits always will continue to differentiate between American New Wave and, in particular, UK New Wave as separate subgenres of New Wave music. American New Wave, although surely pop music, reaches for rock sensibilities a lot more than UK New Wave, which tilted heavily toward synthpop.

We chat about how we would change Eddie Murphy for the better, what kind of sequel we want for Star Trek and whether we are glad to see Sean Connery coming back, if only in voice form. Tom slightly dampens the praise given to An Education and Sam revels in the madness of Running Scared and the flawed ambition of Dogma. The conclusion involves a discussion of actors that, no matter what, we always look forward to seeing on screen.

I used to think that I hated Drew Barrymore because of Charlie’s Angels, her stupid palsy face, and for doing stuff like this:

I still kind of hate her, but after having a recent discussion with my friends, I’ve come to the startling realization that I may like Drew Barrymore. I know, it makes me cringe too, but let me explain:

I loved “Ever After.” It’s a beautiful dream-like movie that I used to watch over and over when I was younger.

I may be the only person in world who actually watched, let alone liked the movie “Never Been Kissed.”

I absolutely love “The Wedding Singer.” It is one of my favorite pseudo ’80s movies of all time. It’s one of those movies that, if it’s on, I’ll drop everything to watch.

“Donnie Darko”

“Whip It” was actually not that bad either. If you can get over the awfulness of Ellen Page (which some people can’t) it’s worth it. Maybe I just liked it because of the roller derby factor, who knows?

In any account, I felt it was necessary to share my feelings on the subject.

I finally saw the roller derby girrl power movie Whip It this weekend. My friend Julie and I found the movie after discovering our first choice Precious wasn’t yet playing in my area. Julie and I wanted to see it, but its easy to figure out why its not in wide release yet since I described the film to my brother as “about a pregnant 300 pound teenage girl. Oh yeah, she has AIDS. And her dad is the father of her baby.”

Whip It has received much praise especially in feminist circles for its strong female cast and direction by Drew Barrymore. But it didn’t appeal to me – the roller derby scenes bored me the same way any sports movie does. As Alia Shakwat’s character, Pash, explains to her best friend, Ellen Page’s Bliss, when she gets excited about roller derby: “I never had a roller skating phase. I had a fat girl, sit in the shade, reading a book phase.”

Photo: flavorwire.com

Other parts of the movie I wish had been explored were the values placed on both beauty and athleticism in Bliss’ small Texas town. Her father sits in his truck watching a football game and is jealous of his neighbor’s sons playing for the high school team. I learned about the religion of football from the non-fiction portrayal of a similar town in Friday Night Lights. Bliss participating in a contact sport like roller derby seemed to play a big role in her father’s acceptance of her new hobby – would his feelings change if Bliss’ hobby wasn’t athletic in nature?

The book Friday Night Lights also explored the entrenched sexism in these dying towns left behind by the oil boom. Bliss’ mother Brooke is a former beauty queen, but is obviously so much more as evidenced by her working-class mail carrier job and tearful admission of her own mother’s lack of involvement. What exactly is the story behind Brooke’s broken dreams? And why does she cling to pageants as a way for her daughter to snag a wealthy man instead of encouraging academic/professional success instead?

The movie was a much greater commentary on small-town American values in postmodern society than a representation of third-wave feminism. Perhaps that accounts for Whip It’s less than stellar box office performance. I’d like to think audiences aren’t buying cinema’s misunderstood daughters with dream-thwarting parents anymore — life is always more complicated.

By the time someone I knew had spotted me, it was too late to turn around and go home.

I had been sitting in my car, debating whether to go in. As I was driving there, I secretly hoped that I would get lost in that part of town, and claim to have been running so late that I decided in the end to give the meeting a miss. I’d even dawdled a little at the supermarket whilst buying the chips, crackers and dip that I’d brought along to share. I don’t know why I was so nervous about turning up exactly… maybe because large groups of girls in general make me feel uncomfortable. I can’t really explain that well either, apart from never really getting the idea of a token membership to the sisterhood. Oh, and the last time I was in the same room with twenty or more girls was at rookies, where I preferred going to the gym or crying in the shower than dealing with that oestrogenfest.

After being let in the front door, I clomped up the stairs and was met by smiling faces, a table full of all kinds of snack food, and the strangely warm and welcoming excited chatter of a whole bunch of girls. I said hello to some people I recognised, while others introduced themselves to me. I felt a little embarrassed that I didn’t remember or know who some people were, even though they seemed to know who I was.

It was soon time for the meeting to begin. I knew I was amongst a very different sisterhood as soon as someone said who they were, and admitted that they had a sore arse. We went around the circle introducing ourselves, and from that point on, some of the girls contributed updates on the status of their butts. One of them was encouraged to show off her bruise, so she hopped up off the couch so that everyone could see, and pulled down the waistband of her pants so we could all gaze in awe and wonder.

I’d known of these girls since June, when I first saw them training at The Forum. I was using a seven day trial membership at the time, and was contemplating joining a gym again for the first time in years, because I felt like I should be doing something more structured and focused on physical improvement than just Krav and yoga. Perhaps it was a sign that I wasn’t destined to become a renaissance gym bunny, because around that time my car experienced some troubles which meant that I had to throw my money temporarily at fixing it, and I couldn’t make it to the gym without it anyway.

This pretty much gave me enough time to reconsider my exercise-related options. When I got a phone call from Sydney (where my car had been towed to, about 150km and $500 away from here) stating that my car needed $4,000+ of repairs and insurance might not cover the costs, I decided to spend a tenth of that price on rollerskates and associated safety gear. Who needs four wheels that can’t roll without a princely sum, when you can have eight that go whenever you want them to?

The guys at work didn’t believe me at first when I said that my car was bung, so I cracked it and got some skates. One of them was gobsmacked when I started talking about signing up for roller derby. I’d wait until all the beefcakes had cleared the base gym, and the bored officer cadets had given up on their basketball game, before lacing up my skates and figuring out how to roll on quads again. A stray baseling spotted my shaky start as he crossed the court from cardio to weights room…

‘Rollerskates! Cool! How are you finding them?’

‘I only got them in the mail yesterday so I’m pretty crap so far… but they’re awesome!’

For some people, derby is their life. For others, it’s an escape from their daily grind, a much needed opportunity to revel in their alterego. I don’t know what it is about this sport and this lifestyle that resonates with me so strongly – whether it’s the enthusiasm and strength of body and spirit that emanates from those that are part of it, the irresistible combination of physicality, strategy, and wheels, or that I seem to have stumbled so serendipitously upon it.

A couple of nights ago, I went to a premiere session of Whip It, which is basically a small town girl who accidentally makes it big when she discovers derby and lets it take over her life. As the session was a fundraiser for Newcastle Roller Derby League, the audience was treated to a short promotional video from the league before the movie began, which got everyone mightily pumped. Although the plot to Whip It may seem contrived, I’m sure I’m not the only one in the audience that night who could find something in common with the character of Bliss. It’s not just the love of skating, the not being able to please your parents as a teenager, or the desire to lead a double life and kick arse.

I’ve been putting off writing an entry gushing about derby love, because I haven’t been able to put a finger on what it is about it that makes it so incredible, and so unlike anything I’ve done before. People who blindly evangelise have a tendency to turn me off regardless of their energy and enthusiasm, and although I’m all for those who experience epiphanies and turning points in their life, it’s still sort of like trying to be interested in hearing about another person’s dreams. I’m guessing that this is what it’s like when a priest-to-be says they had a calling…

For me, the voices in my head don’t mention any God. All I tend to hear is DERBY ELBOWS!
