Ozawa returned to the interrogation room, booting Terahara from his seat.

“If you don’t mind,” he said, opening up his notebook computer, “could you tell me why you got divorced?”

A more appropriate question would have been: what in the world was I thinking when I married Yuko, and how did we ever manage to stay together for eight years?

“I don’t have a simple, ready-made answer, I’m afraid. Whenever I hear about other couples breaking up, it seems the reason is fairly simple: someone cheated, or the husband’s a drunk, or they’ve got financial problems, or there’s been domestic violence. You know, I’m not perfect, but we didn’t have those kinds of problems. I mean, even after we broke up, we’d still go on dates, have dinner together or go to the movies. We’re still friends and I still spend a lot of time with her family. Her grandmother and I are particularly close . . . “

“So why did you break up?”

“I’m a very neat person. You know that already. You’ve seen my place. I’ve always got to have things just so. When I take a shirt out of the closet, I always return the empty hanger to the very right of the closet. Plastic hangers to the right, metal hangers to the left. So they won’t get all tangled up, see? When I take a shirt off, I hang it back up, or throw it in the hamper if it needs washing. I know where everything is. ‘Everything has a place, and everything in its place,’ I always say. Yuko threw things higgedly-piggedly into her closet. Used to drive up the wall. She rarely bothered to clean or straighten the rooms up. It’s not that she was a slob, she wasn’t. Compared to me, she’s probably normal.”

“And this your girlfriend of yours, Azami, she’s neat?”

“I’m sorry, this conversation is got off on the wrong foot,” I said. “If it was only a matter of neatness, Yuko and I’d probably still be together. It was more than that, but that, I don’t know, that was the first of many bricks.”

“The first brick?”

“The first brick, you know, in the wall that grew between Yuko and me, and eventually separated us.”

“Uh-huh,” he said, shutting his notebook computer and leaning back in his chair.

“Like I said, Yuko wasn’t a slob, but she was more, let’s say, ‘tolerant of untidiness’ than I would have liked. She never did much cleaning or helping around the apartment. And it wasn’t because she was busy. I worked much more than she did, ten-plus hours a day, six days a week. I’m no pimp. I was more than happy to, you know, bring home the bacon. The thing that galled me was that after working all day, if I wanted to eat dinner, I would have to run to the supermarket before it closed, get the groceries, and then cook it myself.”

“Really?”

“There was one time, about five years or so ago that I bumped into a student of mine at the supermarket. Nice woman, a few years younger than myself. She had been married a couple of years. It was about ten or so in the evening and she was there doing shopping for the night’s dinner. She was surprised to see, basket full of fruits and veggies and chicken and whatever hanging from my elbow, just like a proper housewife. It made her laugh. ‘Where’s Yuko,’ she asked. My wife was, of course, back at home watching a drama on TV. This student of mine found it so odd that a husband would be doing the grocery shopping. And well, personally, I don’t think it’s a revolutionary idea. Men should do it from time to time. But I was doing it everyday. And as I was walking home, I started thinking, what the hell am I still married for? I liked and respected my wife, but if she had been, say, an employee of mine, I would have fired her long ago. As I walked home from the grocery store, it started to dawn on me how unhappy I was. I could have cried. Let me tell you, that was like a wheelbarrow load of bricks.”

“Bricks?”

“The wall. The wall just got higher and higher from then on.”

“The wall again?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Incidentally, that woman, that student of mine at the supermarket divorced her husband a few months later when she discovered him having an affair.”

“And that’s when you got divorced?”

“No, no, no. That was, I don’t know, maybe three or four years before the divorce. I recall asking for a divorce at the time, but Yuko wouldn’t even consider it. She had a pretty good deal and knew it.”

“So?”

“So, I started to send Yuko away every year.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’d send her away for a couple month every year, just to get her out of my hair. I sent her to the States, to my parents’ home in Oregon, first. About a month. Then, the next year she went for three months. Half a year later she went to Canada for about a year.”

“A year?”

“Well, not exactly a year. Ten months.”

“When was this?”

“2001.”

Ozawa started to look at his converter.

“Heisei 13,” I said.

“Thanks.”

“Anyways, Yuko saw traveling to Canada as a chance to study English; I saw it as a chance to reclaim my life.”

“I don’t get you.”

“Ozawa-san, ageing is like being caught up in a giant, unrelenting whirlpool.”

“You and your metaphors.”

“When you haven’t got much of a vocabulary, you have no choice but to lean heavily upon a metaphor.”

“The whirlpool?”

“Bear with me. When you’re a kid, it feels like you’re floating in an infinite, ocean. The sun shines brightly above, the water is warm and comfortable. You feel as if you’re going be there forever, floating without a worry in the world. Each day passes slowly. A week feels like a month; a year, like an eternity. Then when you’re in your teens, clouds appear, the waters get rough, it feels like something is about to happen, but you don’t quite know what. It’s scary. You’ve got this belief in your heart, though, and it’s really a strong belief, so strong that you start to build dreams upon it. This hope keeps you afloat. Then, when you’re in your twenties, there’s no mistaking it, you’re moving now. A current pulls you forward, faster and faster and faster. But, by your mid thirties, it starts to dawn on you that the direction you’re being pulled might not exactly be the direction you want to go. If you’re lucky and strong enough, you might be able to swim against the current and change the course of your life. Trouble is, most of us aren’t strong, or lucky, or clever, or independent enough. Most people have got kids by then, and, well, all you can do is try to manage the best you can for your kids’ sake, so forget about what you want to do for yourself. And so, you just get pulled into this vortex, going round and round, faster and faster. The years start feeling as if they’re getting shorter and shorter, because, you know they really are. And the ability to change the course of your life becomes increasingly impossible. And then you’re sucked in. You disappear into the darkness. Where did all the time go? What happened to all the things you wanted to do? The dreams? You and all of those dreams and aspirations are pulled under and it’s like you never were that child floating on the surface of a calm warm ocean, the sun shining in your face . . . The game is over, Ozawa-san. There is no reset button.”

I unscrewed the cap of my green tea and took a sip. Looking out the door, I noticed a wooden household Shinto altar, known as a kamidana, above a steel filing cabinet. An offering of water, washed rice and a branch from a sakaki tree had been placed before it.

How odd it was to picture the cops bowing and clapping their hands before the altar, praying to the kami at the start of each day for protection.

Outside, the shadows were lengthening and, judging from the leaves that had grown still on the trees, the strong breeze I enjoyed in the park in the afternoon had died down. I wondered how much longer Ozawa and Nakata were going to keep me there. Were they ever going to let me go? Were they going to give me my cell phone and computers back?

“By the time I was thirty-five,” I told Ozawa, “I knew I had to get out of the marriage. Either that or forfeit my claim on happiness.”

“Your claim on happiness?”

“Yes, we all have a right to be happy.”

“So, your girlfriend, what was her name again?”

“Azami.”

“Azami, right. So, she’s neat?”

“Ozawa-san, I really wish I hadn’t said that. I was just talking from the top of my head. But, yes, yes, Azami is neat. It’s so much more than that, though. Azami isn’t confrontational the way Yuko could be. If I told Yuko to put the unused plastic hangers to the left of the closet she’d make some off-hand derogatory comment about my being too anal, that I’d never make it in life being so particular about things. Which is true, but with Azami, she just accepts my idiosyncrasies. She understands the concept. Doesn’t always follow through with action, but she sees the logic in what I’m saying. With Yuko, I never quite felt we were on the same team. We were always pulling in opposite directions. Azami pulls with me. She often forgets to pick up the rope, so to speak, but she’s always tries to pull in my direction.”

“She cooperates, is what you’re trying to say.”

“Cooperates, yes. And, she’s a lot of fun to be with. Azami and I, we’re always in stitches when we’re together. The other day, she held up a burning match and said, Rémy, this flame is a symbol of our eternal love. This flame . . . ‘ And right as she when she said ‘flame’ again she accidentally blew the flame out and then pretended to panic. Well, I guess, you had to be there to, but it was really quite funny at the time.”

“How did Azami take the news?”

“Not well. I don’t think our relationship is going to survive this. I’ve assured her that it’s all a terrible mistake, and I think she believes me, but still it’s been too much of a shock for her.”

I sighed heavily. A tear fell from my eye.

“Azami is my rudder,” I said. “She keeps me on course.”

“And your wife?”

“She was the rocks I nearly crashed upon.”

Thanksgiving break has officially begun!
I will be home alone until Wednesday when Tse Yong leaves for Atlanta a couple of hours later.
I haven’t been left alone at home for a long time.
I am looking forward to it.

I’ve got a co-op offer from Whirlpool.
If everything goes as planned, I will not reside in Ames anymore, not even after the co-op ends.
I guess the time for me to bid farewell to my friends has finally come.

As mentioned in the previous post, it may be good for me if I leave this place.
It will be a fresh start for everything.

Says Kajol, “Whenever I endorse a brand, I look into what it is all about, whether it is stable, reliable. I don’t know if I’ve fool-proofed it, but I do certainly look into these aspects.”

When asked that what she looks in a brand before deciding to promote it, she answered, “I look for reliability. It’s important that I know that the product I’m promoting is worth it. I won’t promote something I don’t believe in, or will harm someone or something in any way.”

Unlike other actresses, she is also comfortable playing a mother to 8-10-year-old kids in commercials. She says, “I always wanted kids. I wanted a baby ever since I was three or something. Kids are a natural part of life.”

Any travel break is welcome especially when the whole year one spends at home, mostly on bed, dragging rather than walking, struggling to keep up with a 3 yr olds incessant demands, wailing away almost every night and many more such combats with a son in the tummy who is hell bent to prove he will be a sure-shot footballer someday. Though we had PhantasiaLand break some couple of months back but it already seems ages now. Although a long holiday is soon nearing (yay! Goa calling) during Christmas and New Year, we still like to savor on short trips too. So we book Hotel Zugbrücke, a four star known for wellness and sports, 180 kms away from our place near Koblenz.

Every year our staff gets surprise gifts from us for Christmas, last year we took all of them along with their families to Hotel Mercator which is just in our town, for one whole day stay, food, drinks, wellness all inclusive. It was great fun and we all enjoyed to the core. So this time over, we planned it differently with different gifts for all like cameras, iphones etc. But Christoph and family gets to spend with us on this surprise weekend trip.

We met at 9.00am at Janses Mattes restaurant situated at a main crossing, thats mostly a meeting point for any road journey for people around here. They were supposed to follow us (not blindfolded) along through the beautiful scenic landscapes which is spread all over germany with the onset of autumn. For them the journey seemed unending as Raj had told them that we were to drive just about 80 kms so the surprise already had begun as they drove for 100 km extra. And we finally reach our destination by 11.00am.

Hotel Zugbrück is one of its kind specially for table tennis lovers, has a bowling alley, a disco, wellness with sauna, swimming pool, whirlpool, babysitting facility, a large kids playroom too. It is such a wonder that this small hilly area produces world class table-tennis players like Lucjan Blaszczyk, Tomas Pavelka, Patrick Baum and Matiss Burgis. So our surprise destination was duly acknowledged by all, kids were already jumping, dying to do so, more into the swimming pool.

We first wanted to have lunch so we proceeded to the restaurant which was connected to the hotel by a channel or sort of bridge. And the buffet had just begun. We opted for the window corner from where we could see a stream passing, the bridge that we crossed was just above that. This explains the name of the hotel Zugbrücke (zug is a train and brücke means bridge).

After lunch we took a short rest and then spent good three hours in the swimming pool area. Kids were having a ball of a time screaming and splashing away. Cappucino was welcome at this point. Now the idea of having the whirlpool out in the open only added to the charm of the wholesome experience with cold mist almost enveloping and the tall trees overlooking you while a glass of champagne just complimented the hot water massages. We just ran out of time for tennis as bowling was booked for 6.30 pm which was absolute fun after 12 yrs approximately. Wondering how much we lose out on smaller joys when we think nothing but work, work and work all our life. With kids we are now reliving those forgotten golden days.

It was time for dinner now. I loved all in the elaborate menu which consisted of onion soup, variety of salads, pork and deer was main course food, knödel, grilled champignons, zucchini, aubergine, rosemarine potatoes, paprika and fettucini, thunfish with teriyaki sauce and many many more. I am not even getting to the dessert area, besides I am still dieting. As the kids were tired and sleepy they had to be put to bed, so I say goodnight to all. I also slept as early as 10.30pm and Raj came back to room at 1.00am.

Got up at 7 in the morning, it was drizzling outside and no one wanted to wake up. We definitely wanted to stay for the Sunday as well, but cannot. At 9am we had to meet for breakfast and then by 11am we aimed at checking out, as a short and sweet, well spent holiday came to an end, kids were seemingly upset. So next time it will be a at least good three days for us, promise .

PS: Christoph and family however wanted to spend sometime more around the hill top, trekking upto the castle.

Despite my frugal ways I hate that I often “waste” money by forgetting to take laundry out of the washing machine in a timely manner. Why is this a waste? Because I end up with smelly laundry that I’ve got to wash again to get rid of the odor. So now I’m using twice the detergent (or vinegar) and twice the water to freshen my already clean laundry. Even with DIY laundry detergent, I’m still wasting my resources. (By the way, my laundry room would never look this neat; I just think it’s a nifty-looking washer and dryer.)

Since I’m an olfactory-oriented person (remember my post on that wretched insulation?), leaving the clothes as is as they go into the dryer or onto the line just won’t work. I don’t want to smell like a wet dog when I put on my clean clothes, and I don’t want my family going around smelling like that either. (The dog can smell like a wet dog anytime he wants to–especially when it’s raining.) In some cases I’ve found that a few shots of Febreze on the offending attire can help get rid of the smell, but in most instances I’ve got to run the whole wash cycle again.

That’s why I was interested in this press release from Whirlpool about its new Duet washing machine (pictured above): it supposedly fixes this smelly laundry problem for absentminded people like myself. Here’s a blurb from that release:

A front loader like this will save me money in the long run by using far less water than my old top loader. The fact that it may also help me avoid my smelly laundry ways in the future–which, in turn, means I’ll use even less water and detergent when I no longer have to rewash my already clean laundry that just happens to smell bad? Well, that’s just priceless.

Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR) and a number of other companies announced the creation of a new collaborative effort aimed at demonstrating the role of smart grid technologies and practices in the achievement of climate change goals.

Called the Smart Green Grid Initiative (SGGI), the effort will include educational events at the upcoming climate change meetings in Copenhagen. SGGI has been approved by the United Nations to be an official smart grid delegation to the Copenhagen meetings. SGGI will also be sponsoring educational events in the U.S. in the weeks preceding the meetings in Copenhagen.

Supporters of the Smart Green Grid Initiative include National Grid (NYSE: NGG), Southern Company (NYSE: SO), AEP (NYSE: AEP), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), LG Electronics (LGERF.PK),Landis + Gyr, Echelon (Nasdaq: ELON), Tendril, Ice Energy, Enspiria, eMeter and Itron (Nasdaq: ITRI).

“We need to help the world understand the real potential for Smart Grid technologies to help slow climate change,” said Bob Gilligan, vice president of GE Energy’s Transmission and Distribution business. “Smart Grid solutions are often viewed primarily for their efficiency and cost savings, but every kilowatt saved is also a carbon savings. Add the potential carbon benefits we get through easier integration of more renewable energy, like wind and solar, and the Smart Grid can have a major effect on the carbon impact of our energy infrastructure.”

For example, with a key component of climate change policies being increased use of renewable energy, SGGI said it will try to help parties understand and manage its variable and intermittent nature. It will try to demonstrate that demand response and energy storage solutions can dynamically complement renewable resources–and avoid the building of new fossil-fuel power plants to fill the availability gaps and peak needs.

“Another important area is energy efficiency,” said Dan Delurey, Chairman of the Smart Green Grid Initiative. “Today, it is important to view energy efficiency in a more holistic and dynamic way than in the past. New technologies and applications mean that energy efficiency can mean more than just replacing one device with a newer, more efficient one. It can include providing new information to the consumer that they have simply never had before. Research has shown that electricity customers with energy usage information become more energy efficient overall–by upwards of 15%. The Smart Grid may help make energy efficiency sustainable and institutionalized in business and society.”

The Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition and the Demand Response Coordinating Committee, the leading groups in the U.S. focused on promoting the development of the Smart Grid and smart grid practices like Demand Response, also will be supporting SGGI.

Design Excellence Brazil (IF Concept Design Award)

O iF Concept Design Award é uma das maiores premiações do Design de Produto do mundo e considerada a mais importante da Europa. E através do programa Design Excellence Brazil, o Ministério do Desenvolvimento junto com o Centro de Design do Paraná selecionam projetos variados para representarem o Design brasileiro nessa super premiação. Os felizardos e competentes escolhidos contarão com apoio logístico, financeiro e de mídia para sues projetos e correm o risco de vencerem no iF. Ano passado quatro trabalhos brazucas foram premiados por lá.

Este ano, os projetos devem ser inscritos nas seguintes categorias: time to market – projetos que tenham a pretensão de serem comercializados; desenho industrial; moda; comunicação/multimídia; arquitetura e design de interiores; design universal. Os participantes concorrem ainda a prêmios em dinheiro. No total são distribuídos 30 mil euros.

Whether you think the upcoming international climate talks in Copenhagen will deliver a solution for governments to fight climate change, or will ultimately turn out to be a global flop, one thing’s for sure: All eyes will be on the progressive city in Denmark in the second and third weeks of December, including those of the companies building the next generation of smart grid infrastructure. Today a group called the Smart Green Grid Initiative (SGGI), which includes heavyweights like General Electric (s GE), Whirlpool, Google (s GOOG), AEP and National Grid, says it will hold smart grid-focused events at the UN talks in Copenhagen and will act as an official delegation at the meeting.

While we’re not too optimistic that the U.S. will be able to pass climate change legislation before Copenhagen, we’re heartened to hear that technology companies and innovators will be actively working to have their voices heard at the event. As VantagePoint Venture Partners CEO and Managing Partner Alan Salzman put it this summer, the Silicon Valley contingent can help bring “mundane Silicon Valley activities front and center,” and represent the innovation arm within the private energy sector for an international policy audience that doesn’t necessarily think about the business community with the same degree of granularity.

U.S. smart grid companies could also learn something on the trip. Denmark currently generates the equivalent of about 20 percent of its electricity from wind (though the country exports a lot of that) and has built one of the world’s most intelligent grids to be able to manage such a large clean power load.

The country is a lot smaller than the U.S., so has been able to move more quickly and with better national coordination. Denmark is also investing heavily in electric vehicles — for example, the government is working in an alliance with IBM (s IBM) and others to build out smart charging infrastructure for plug-in vehicles, and state-controlled DONG Energy has a partnership with Better Place.

Startups in particular that are developing cutting edge technology could find like minds in the country. A technology that might be too next-gen for some slower-moving U.S. utilities, could find a home at a faster moving utility like DONG Energy. The Smart Grid Green Initiative includes a variety of startups, including Tendril, Ice Energy and eMeter.

Our appliances were delivered and as much care went into their selection as every other product in our Narragansett LEED house. In addition to considerations for style and performance, all of our appliances (with the exception of our stove because stoves are not rated) are top performing ENERGY STAR appliances.

As available appliances for the project will bear the ENERGY STAR label and assist us in maintaining the highest level of energy efficiency throughout the home. Additionally, the new Whirlpool Duet washer, which uses 74 percent less water and 80 percent less energy than traditional top load washers manufactured before 2004 and you can watch how it works in this video, will aid the project in its LEED-H for Gold certification quest by providing a point in the Innovation & Design category. And yes, we did pick the cranberry.

Whirlpool Brand Resource Saver Dishwasher – Features the eco-friendly Resource Saver wash system and CEE Tier II recognition from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency ratings. We chose to have the custom cabinet panel installed to match.

Whirlpool Brand Duet Dryer–Uses up to 40% less energy with Eco Normal cycle when paired with a Duet washer.  A more precise set of heat and moisture detection sensors allows clothes to dry more efficiently. The Quick Refresh steam cycle tumbles 2 to 5 items, helping break down odors and relax wrinkles. Combined with the Duet washer, it is the brands most efficient laundry pair to date, providing $837 in energy and water savings over the first five years of use. Though dryer’s do not yet earn ENERGY STAR ratings, this dryer is top energy saver and when managed on the Control4 appliance module will only be allowed to run during non peak pricing hours to manage our cost per kwh budget.

KitchenAid Architect Series II Double Drawer Dishwasher – This ENERGY STAR dishwasher is able to wash 2 different loads independently or simultaneously and features 5 cycles for flexible washing options. We installed it right across from our kitchen wine bar which will be great when entertaining and keeping the glasses plentiful.

KitchenAid Architect Series II Refrigerator – The 48” main refrigerator provides the elegant aesthetics and functionality that my gourmet cook’s kitchen deserves.  This ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator will be monitored on the Control4 appliance module for real time monitoring of energy consumption and load shedding from 1 – 4 AM daily for a projected annual energy savings of 12 percent of running costs. A second ENERGY STAR labeled Whirlpool French Door refrigerator, located in the home’s pantry, will also be monitored on the Control4 system.

As I watch our appliances get installed and I think about the months of planning and meetings we had, the product reviews I read, the color swatches I compared and the immense time I spent designing the kitchen and laundry room, I cannot tell you how muchI look froward to doing a load of wash adn running the dishwasher. Seriously.
