Ok, eu era uma criança. Não lembro bem as circunstâncias, só sei que pessoas com quinze anos musicalmente não passam de crianças. Sem exceções.

Nesses tal quinze anos, não lembro de quem*, ganhei alguns cd’s. Dois especificamente: Tragic Kingdom, do No Doubt, e Freak Show, do Silverchair. Como toda criança de quinze anos, dessas duas bandas me encantavam apenas “Don’t Speak” e “Miss your love”. Claro que comecei a ouvir outras coisas, de ambos. Com o No Doubt eu comecei a falar de Ska, mas nessa época isso não ganhava muitas meninas.

O Silverchair, no entanto, me rendeu mais histórias. Rendeu, por exemplo, uma trilha sonora muito boa numa fase amorosa complicada e extremamente divertida, dividido entre dois amores. Bons tempos aqueles…

Rendeu mais coisas. Uma conversa despretensiosa sobre Silverchair no mIRC virou um namoro tempos depois. O Silverchair animou bem uma noite pré-vestibular em plena João Pessoa.

E dessas duas descobertas musicais na era pueril, a que se desenvolveu de verdade foi a do Silverchair. Não virei fã, e a essa altura as duas vezes em que eles tocaram no Brasil já tinham se passado. Mas vieram bons discos. O Neon Ballroom, que eu alugava numa locadora de cd’s em Juazeiro (é, naquele tempo e lugar existiam locadoras de cd’s). O Diorama e o meu vício numa já sem graça MTV.

Esse disco que eu ganhei, passei a frente um ano depois, para queridos amigos do Especial, onde paguei quase um ano de não-cursinho. Nessa época, a do Freak Show, o Silverchair fazia um som pesado que nem era palatável o suficiente para o pós-grunge, nem pesado o suficiente para o pré-grunge. E isso pode ser o fim para uma banda que quase substituiu o Nirvana.

Era um disco que eu não gostava de ouvir. Junto a ele foram doados também o Tragic Kingdom e, pasmem, o Dookie, do Green Day**. E foi assim que o Silverchair significou algo na minha vida. Historinha sem sentido e sem graça né?

Do you know what today is? No, it’s not just the CollegeCandy.com editor’s half birthday – it’s the International Day of Peace! A day where people around the globe come together to reflect on the world peace we (and all those Miss America contestants) yearn for.

In honor of this beautiful day, I started thinking about my own personal wars I’ve been fighting. I’ve held onto a lot of grudges in the past year and I think today is the perfect day to wave the white flag and let them all go. Because there is nothing more freeing than peace.

I’m ready to call a cease-fire and here are a few of my former enemies I’ll be burying the hatchet with today:

The R.A. that stole my fifth of gin. I know I probably shouldn’t have been walking around with it in public. But it was so tiny and bite-sized and it packed such a big punch that I couldn’t bare to part with it. That is until you snatched it from me. I might have gotten a $50 fine, but at least I escaped alcohol poisoning that night. Peace and thank you.

The Professor that gave me a C- on a paper because I made the margins smaller than he specified. I’m sorry that in my eagerness to impress you with my in-depth analysis spilled over the page limit.  Not wanting to do away with any of my brilliance, I thought I could fool you by making the margins .25 inches.  You caught on to my charade, and I paid for my sins. Peace Prof. You taught me the importance of playing by the rules.

The girl who spilled her coffee all over my brand new bag in class. Sure, I had to hang-dry my three notebook’s worth of notes around my apartment. And, yeah, the $25 to dry clean my brand new messenger bag was sort of a drag. The fact that you didn’t apologize and actually blamed me for “putting my things so close to your Americano” was also kinda rude, but giving you the stink-eye every time I come to class is starting to give me a headache. You keep your coffee on your desk and I’ll keep my bag on my chair and we’ll be good to go.

The bouncer that confiscated my fake I.D. Yes, my doppelganger was about 17 years older than I actually was, but it was a valiant effort on my part and you were having none of it.  You cut it up right in front of my eyes (which are blue, not brown, another tip-off) but I forgive you.  It’s your job to destroy the bar-scene dreams of youngins like myself. I have made my peace.

The young man that nailed my left-behind undergarments to the wall of the fraternity lodge. Perhaps I should have taken more care when I fled from your room that morning, but you could have done the gentlemanly thing and returned my possessions to me. Public humiliation aside, at least I got a few more Facebook friend requests that week. Peace be with you, frat-star.

As for the Beatles…. hate ‘em. Hate the music, hate the lyrics, can’t stand their voices, and couldn’t care less about the hype.  What gets me is people MY age that are obsessed with them. What the hell? They were producing music for our parent’s generation, not ours. GET OVER IT.

Of course, there is no accounting for taste. Personally, I just can’t stand them. I also hate Weezer, Colbie Caillat (her music AND her name), Mitchell Hall (should have been booted WEEK 1!), Wal-Mart, and your face.

Also, since Kev is planning on getting RB: Beatles Suck Edition, I guess he won’t be playing it on his xbox since it’s in MY room hooked up to MY tv. Sad for you, Kev. Sad.

And so the 2009-2010 season comes to a merciful end for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team, apparently admitting to itself that it doesn’t stand much of a chance against anyone this season, has decided to just avoid the suspense and declare the season over during the preseason. So it seems, anyway, based on this inspiring write-up in today’s Star. Quarterback? Hurt. Offensive coordinator? Fired. Head coach? Typically brusque and Rumsfeldian in his answers. Man, we can’t wait to get out to Camarohead for a game!

It was the most bizarre day in what has been a year of upheaval for the Chiefs.

With three days left until the final preseason game, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was fired on Monday. Matt Cassel, the new quarterback with a big contract and injured knee, not only was nowhere to be seen, but because he was unavailable to practice, head coach Todd Haley would not acknowledge his existence.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! Cassel has been spirited away to an undisclosed location, and those poor souls cursed with season tickets are heading for the exits. So is there anything positive happening at the endless parking lot that is the Truman Sports Complex? Well… there are some sweet renovations to look forward to. Um, hooray? Watching a team go 0-16 is much more luxurious in a taxpayer-financed pleasure palace, after all.

The team has distributed a memo to a number of teams in the league informing them that a number of Chicago veterans are available in trade. Names on that list include designated hitter Jim Thome, outfielder Jermaine Dye and reliever Scott Linebrink.

After being swept by the Yankees in New York over the weekend, the White Sox entered Monday’s action with a 64-67 record and were 5 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.

Players must be acquired by midnight ET on Monday to be eligible for postseason play with their new team.

Well, that shows you how much confidence the White Sox front office has in the club’s ability to make the postseason.

Jake Peavy would not talk to the press today about the results of his elbow tests, which I’m thinking is a dubious indication. He’ll be talking after the game, so stay tuned for that.

Combine that news with this team’s current status and it’s hard to be surprised Kenny is giving up.

Spring training is only a few more months away.

P.S. Good luck trying to find any team willing to take on Linebrink’s salary.

Barack Obama’s plan for socialised health care on the Stalinist model across the United States is now in full retreat. Not only will it not play in Peoria, it will not play anywhere.

Politicians returning to Washington after scrubbing off the tar and feathers acquired at town-hall meetings are bringing with them a blast of reality that has been absent from Obama’s dreamland regime since his inauguration. For months Obama had been trumpeting the indispensable nature of his “public option” in a new health care system. Suddenly, it is no big deal. Kathleen Sebelius, the Health and Human Services Secretary, is now telling Americans that taxpayer-funded insurance was “not the essential element”.

So, President Pantywaist is in full retreat; but he is desperate for some face-saving measure to pretend he has achieved revolutionary reform. The Senate should not oblige. Obama has no interest in genuine health care reform: as a Senator he voted against all the moderate, achievable measures that were proposed. So far as he was concerned, the worse things got for 48 million uninsured Americans the better: it might persuade them to buy into his socialist scheme, the primary objective of which was not relief of suffering but expansion of Big Government.

I love Smallville since the first time and I really enjoy it. It’s about the story of a teenage Clark Kent in the days before he was Superman. The casts were so awesome. And of course one of my favorite is the soundtrack.

We all know that money is a very important resource. That is why most of our aims when we reach adult life is to make more money, make more money and make more money. With money, you know you can never have too much. There’s always that new thing that you’re dying to buy, that new place you’re dying to visit, that new experience you’re dying to have. So we embrace certain things that fill our daily drill: jobs.

A lot of us, with the pressure of earning high, get jobs that are not really apt for our skills. Sometimes we just stick with a certain job because it pays high, because it is near our home, or because we simply got used to it that we feel it works like a custom banner for us.

However, there are two tell signs that can say when we should quit our jobs.

1. Boss is not treating you right. Whether its sexual harassment, corporal punishment, lying about your salary or verbal assault, by all means, quit. Your boss should also realize that you are a human being, just like she is and that you don’t deserve such treatment. Sure, you can take a little gossip but the things mentioned above are pure abuse. Quit before you lose your head.

2. You don’t find meaning in doing what you’re doing. One of the great things about having a job is having something to contribute to the world. However, when you feel that all you’re doing is simply mechanical and you’re just waiting for the next payday, quit. This may cause depression and that’s bad both for you and your profession. Eventually, you will realize that you’ve lost track of almost everything that you were once in control of and you might break down. When that happens, it’s difficult, really to pick up the pieces.

In careers, we should all learn when to wave the white flag.

So I’ve given up temporarily on doing the CSS and HTML and learning the JavaScript for www.jeryes.ca. With what’s going on in my life at the moment, I just don’t have time. It kind of sucks. I need to learn to manage my time more and do less refreshing of Twitter and Facebook and Dailybooth pages, waiting for conversation. I’m pathetic. Haha. Maybe if I could actually provide content, there would be tweets or comments or messages to read. Oh well.

iWeb is kind of frustrating. Just starting to get the hang of it. I didn’t know that the Inspector held most of the things I wanted to change. If only I could figure out how to make the fonts not all in caps, but perhaps that’s decided on the theme once you choose it. Looks like I may be changing the theme soon. Which reminds me, probably not a bad idea to purchase iLife ‘09. But I guess I’ll leave that until the next paycheque.

Going to Edmonton this weekend to watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in IMAX. I am so excited. I’ve already seen it twice here in Yellowknife. The first time, the power went out twice. I’m just hoping that when I do see it in IMAX, it’s IMAX 3D. If not, I won’t be too bummed about it, but it’s definitely what I was flying down for.

DEBATING WITH THE CHATTY CHATTY PRINCESS

Apparently I have a slow learning curve. You would think that as a professionally trained lawyer I would be better equipped for arguments with my four-year old, but she clearly has the upper-hand. Her imagination and shifting conceptions of reality have left me flummoxed.

I wave the white flag for the Chatty Chatty Princess.

The last several days have offered two glittering examples of the vastly superior reasoning she wields over me.

1. For the past several weeks the Chatty Chatty Princess has been playing with two imaginary friends — Diego & Alicia. She is always making sure that we are taking these two friends seriously. When we go anywhere in the car she asks, “Where are Diego and Alicia going to sit?” When we go to the pool she says, “Make sure you help Diego & Alicia.” When it’s time for a goodnight story, Diego & Alicia have to
listen too.

On Saturday morning, as we were preparing for our return trip to Minnesota, the Chatty Chatty Princess wasn’t eating much of her breakfast. The Beloved asked her if she wanted to bring her donuts in the car, but the Chatty Chatty Princess said no. So I, being the intelligent and creative parent that I am, thought I would appeal to the needs of her friends, Diego & Alicia.

I said, “Should we bring the donuts in the car in case Diego and Alicia get hungry?”

“Daddy … Donuts are real food and Diego & Alicia are pretend. You can’t give them real food.”

2. While on the Denver trip, the Chatty Chatty Princess lost her favorite pink elephant. She had asked Santa for a baby pink elephant for Christmas and he brought it to her because she was such a good mommy. Since Christmas, baby pink elephant has traveled everywhere with the Chatty Chatty Princess. But in Denver the baby pink elephant disappeared.

D-Monk got the Chatty Chatty Princess another stuffed elephant (gray, not pink) for the remainder of the trip and she was fine. But when we got home the Chatty Chatty Princess ran up to her bedroom and looked in her bed for the baby pink elephant. D-Monk reminded her that baby pink elephant got lost in Denver. She said, “I know, but I thought maybe she walked home.”

D-Monk decided to go back to the same store where “Santa” had procured the original pink elephant. He brought home a new baby pink elephant and put it on her bed.

When the Chatty Chatty Princess discovered the elephant she came running down the stairs. “Look, Mommy & Daddy! Santa brought me a new baby pink elephant!”

Again, I made the mistake of thinking I could use her imagination as a tool for my argument. I told her that it was not a new elephant, but that Santa had found the old elephant and given her a bath. She remarked at this point that the old elephant had a white stomach. Neither the Beloved nor I had noticed this, but she was right. So, once again using my amazing powers of persuasion, I told her
that baby elephant was growing older and her stomach had turned pink.

“Daddy … Stuffed animals don’t grow!”

When we open our eyes every morning, we immerse ourselves in this vivid world of color. It’s quite surprising that our brain is capable of handling all this information. When we see a tree, we think the leaves are green no matter how lighted or shaded they are. This is the reason why children draw landscapes using very few colors. As we mature, we learn to discern thousands of different shades. In fact, we don’t have enough words to name them all!

Colors make us feel certain ways depending on how some colors are used. White for example symbolizes purity, peace and tranquility. In olden days, people raise a white flag to signify surrender. On the other hand, Red, white and blue immediately conveys patriotism. Green has been associated with nature, money and ‘Go’ for racing flags. Opposite of that is ‘Red’ for stop. Red can also connote passion. Yellow is for joy and happiness although it can also mean cowardice when used to describe a person. Blue might also mean peace and calmness like the flag of the United Nations. Black can mean sophistication while it can also mean evil. Pirates have often used the color black in their Jolly Roger Flags

There are a lot more emotions that can be evoked with different combinations of colors. Contrasting colors like yellow and violet pop out at the viewer while analogous colors (adjacent colors on the color wheel) tend to be more refined and calming. It is best not to use bright colors for designs all the time since it can be quite irritating to look at for long periods of time.

You amnesiac, chest-thumping retards had enough yet? Duh, we got 26 championships, you say? SHUT UP, I say.

You don’t even remember where you were the last time your Chokees won a championship, and you conveniently overlook the last ten years of their history… it’s been a decade of choking and futility for the Chokees, a consistent streak of failure dating back to 2000. Jeter, Posada, Mo and Pettitte are all that’s left from those real championship teams, and not one of them has managed to come through against Boston in recent memory (Jeter’s inability to move the runner over late in last night’s game a prime example of how unclutch he and the rest of those faux-stars have become).

You keep celebrating all those 26 championships, keep reliving the glory years through the watching of innumerable late night reruns of Yankeeography BJs and Yankees Classics on YES…in the here and now the Yankees are a mediocre assemblage of overpaid, underachieving poseurs incapable of beating good teams when it matters. You know it, I know it, and most importantly, they know it.

The only new flag flying in Yankees Stadium this year will be colored white, and it’ll be Joe Girardi who’s waving it come late August when the Pinstriped Scourge rolls over and dies. That’s right, it’s welcome back to the years of Mel Hall and Mike Pagliarulo for you. Teixiera will be the new Mattingly, A-Rod will be the new Steve Balboni, and the Yankees will suck until no one comes to watch them anymore and those 26 flags tatter in the windtunnel that is their new stadium.
