Jesus! I thought I had my fill of Dubstep mixes this year, but as if posting the Aphex Twin Dubstep remix named Dublicker wasn’t enough, this little gem peeked over the horizon, then came running up and slapped me in the face out of nowhere. Again this remix is from an unknown producer (what is wrong with these dubstep folk, don’t they want any glory?).

Now this is how I like my dubstep, dark and dirty with menacing overtones like a mugging is about to take place. Unfortunately the track sort of falls apart at the end but the first three minutes are brutal without being groundbreaking. Having said that Proxy’s original wasn’t exactly a fluffy little kitten, so bastardising it with dubstep is just going to end in humiliation for your ears but its well worth the listen.

Proxys ‘Dancing in the Dark’ is an absolute killer tune which I would have loved to have heard live, especially after hearing the reaction from the crowd when it dropped at I Love Techno on this mixtape. So this remix is a right little treat.

And because we’re so nice we threw in the original for comparison without the download link, you can go and buy it when Proxy’s album gets released soon, cheapskate. As a bonus have a butchers at the Bloody Beetroots remix of ‘Who Are You’ which is out now.

There aren’t many words that will make me go back for a second look but calling a track

There aren’t many words that will make me go back for a second look but calling a track ‘Dublicker’ is one of those sure-fire ways to make me do a double take. Obviously i’m going to blog about this track because it’s a Dubstep remix of the controversial ‘Windowlicker’ by Aphex Twin. Not that it was really that controversial, it was only the name and the insane video that really had pressure groups down their knitting and get excited.

However another good reason to blog this tune is that the group or person who put this remix together has chosen to stay anonymous. This was actually brought out on a nondescript white label vinyl, with just a little title on the front and obviously someone got hold of it and went “digitizie that!”. Good fucking work too, because there’s something humbling about a tune with no fanfare, banner waving or press release stating who just remixed their same-same-insert-genre-here track.

That’s not to say this isn’t any good, well the first minute is kinda meandering and you start to think maybe there was a reason the producer wanted to stay anonymous but then at the 2:35 mark it suddenly picks up and it all makes sense by catapulting you into Dub-heaven.

God the more I listen to this the more I love it. Seriously whoever put this together, stand up! Be recognised!

Episodic officially launched its white-label video service to the public today, joining the crowded

Episodic officially launched its white-label video service to the public today, joining the crowded ranks of off-the-shelf video providers already populated with the likes of Brightcove, thePlatform and Ooyala.

In the two years that the company has been in development, it has shifted focus. Back in July of last year the company was focused on episodic (hence the name), story-driven web content. It has since expanded to become a basic white-label provider servicing media companies, sporting events and enterprises. When asked about the change in direction beyond web series, Episodic CEO Noam Lovinsky told us “Frankly, that’s where the money is.”

Episodic has a deal with Showtime Networks (which also works with market leader Brightcove), and Lovinsky said his company is being used by other major networks that will be announced soon.

Lovinsky said a differentiator for Episodic is its advertising capabilities, including the ability to insert targeted ads into a live events. Rather than just porting a live event straight to the web with the same commercials, Episodic allows publishers to run a different set of ads for the online version.

Lovinsky was dismissive of what he perceived as the predictable headlines bound to emerge from Episodic’s launch — why is Episodic entering a market where the key players are already established? But the reason those headlines spring to mind (and they do spring to mind) is that there other white-label providers have already been able to step in and establish relationships with the big players — will those companies want to go through the hassle of switching?

After being on the receiving end of a jab from Ooyala last week, Levinsky wasn’t afraid to throw a barb of his own during our talk with him, calling out Ooyala, Brightcove and thePlatform by saying “A lot of people say they do a lot of things but don’t really do them.”

While Episodic may be able to go toe-to-toe with the competition when it comes to product features, it will need to ramp up when it comes to its war chest. Episodic has raised just $2.5 million to date (though Lovinsky says it’s ready to go out for more). Ooyala has raised more than $20 million, Brightcove has raised more than $80 million and thePlatform has its own sugar daddy in the form of parent company Comcast (s CMCSA).

Text message marketing is the new trend in marketing. It has proven to receive some of the best results while keeping costs extremely low. In a world where cell phones dominate communication, text message marketing is the only way to get through directly to the consumer. With this in mind, bars, restaurants, tanning salons, hair salons, spas, real estate agents, sign shops, printing stores, retail stores, churches and many other types of businesses are jumping on board.

With text message marketing companies popping up everywhere, how can you know which company is the best to use for your business? If you want to get in on the ground floor of a booming business and want to become an affiliate or reseller of text message marketing services, how do you know which program to use?

We have tested all the programs, talked with support, worked out the kinks and provide you with the best advice based on what you are looking for.

DJ Trade

Red Square, Moscow, Russia

The primary destination for both superstar, and wannabie DJs of Russian nationality, DJ Trade occupies two floors of prime retail space. Less than a hundred metres from the cobbled imprint of Red Square, the store offers the unique chance to check out Lenin’s corpse and the latest house releases in the same afternoon.

Despite being shorter than 90% of the Russian population, I have to duck to get under the neon sign that precariously hangs low above the door, beyond which lies the mediocre first floor, which sells nothing but trance compilations and midi-controller gadgets.

We follow a man carrying a record-bag up a set of white-washed stairs at the back of the shop, unsure as to whether we are heading to a second floor or a stockroom. Thankfully on arrival at the top of the staircase we discover three rooms of musical goodies – jackpot!

We make a beeline for the end room, which, filled with cardboard boxes of records, is an aladin’s den of vinyl, spanning everything from minimal techno to jackin’ house.

I grease my fingers and start flicking, looking for a bargain or rarity that will make me part with the little cash I have on me. I scramble through the house section, which is comprised of a reassuring mixture of classics, new releases and the alway-promising white label press.

Steve Angello’s Gypsy pops up on 12″, featuring remixes from Laidback Luke. The track itself is fairly decent and was a Ibiza heavyweight in 2008, but as much as I am fond of it, it always struck me as a bit of a poor man’s Heater. The Laidback Luke remix sounds like fun (his remixes nearly always are) and I’m half tempted to give it a spin and see if it’s worth its price tag. However, the large Russian we followed up the stairs is using the decks behind us, flexing his muscles as he places the needle from A to B sides, unsurprisingly I can’t muster the courage to tell him he’s hogging the turntable.

Instead I turn to a different boxes of vinyl, hoping to find something else. Nothing stands out and the records are priced too highly to buy blind.

I prepare to leave, until out of the corner of my eye I spot my favourite ‘Dutch vocal hip-house trio’, LeLe.

LeLe’s classic track Breakfast on white vinyl, to be more precise. I take the record out of the sleeve, holding it up to the light, as if the musical goodness will be visible on inspection. However, its price of 420 roubles is more than I have on me, having bought lunch earlier (Moscow is an expensive city). Thankfully my partner, Maddi, intervenes, plucking the plastic from my sweaty palms, taking it to the till, purse in hand.

A few minutes later I find myself in possession of the first vinyl record since leaving home, a gleaming white 12″ masterpiece, containing a track so good it makes the base of your stomach tingle and the ends of your fingers go numb.

Of course, you might not like it.

Yeah. See my description for Tues. I’m a Trance DJ at heart, I can’t escape bass lines or booming synths. This has a great emotional yet disco feel to it with a breakdown that will move even the most hardened music critic.

This is another track that is victim to the remix plague. There are dozens out there that destroy most of what is good about the original cut. Stick with the original I say. Classic never goes out of style.

Oooh, it’s even an elusive white label! Ha.

It might be too much to say that it’s raining money in online videoland today, but it’s at least a drizzle. White label video provider VMIX gave us a heads up that it has secured $2 million in a Series B-1 round. Including this latest haul, the company has now raised a total of $23.5 million in venture funding and is backed by Enterprise Partners, Mission Ventures, JK&B Capital and ATA Ventures. All four investors returned for this latest round.

VMIX clients include Penguin Books, Toyota-Scion, Tribune Co., and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and in its press release said it provides services for “hundreds of entertainment, television, radio and newspaper sites.” VMIX says the new money will go towards expansion into the enterprise and nonprofit sectors.

When we first wrote about VMIX, we weren’t sure what to make of the company, as it positioned itself as pretty much all video things to all video people: a UGC site, a filmmaker community, a white label video service, and a premium content licenser.

I went to HuaShan on Sat. to confirm my table and check out how White Label was organizing things. Originally I wanted to sell this weekend, but for some reason, the dude in charge said it wasn’t allowed. But I was pleased to see many of the same sellers I met the first 2 times.

UNfortunately, they informed me that my first weekend to start selling, Oct 3/4th, was postponed (canceled) because of Mid-Autumn (aka Moon) Festival. The organizer thought most people, including other sellers, would want to take this weekend to par-take in the BBQ tradition and be together with their families.

Fair enough, but thanks for calling to inform me. Good thing I happened to swing by and hear about the news. I wouldn’t have been too happy to find out that morning, or only a few days before. Confirmed dates are at the bottom of this post.

The crowd on Sat, however, was the largest I’ve seen so far, and so full of awesome new people!

These peeps were all watching/listening to an incredible violin musician. Such a nice change to have classical music at the venue instead of the usual up and coming but not that appealing hodgepodge of bands.

Met up with Kiah and decided to make some new friends with our fellow-to-be-sellers.

This dude, Steven (Moonkey) was making these awesome handmade key chains or key covers (and rings!) out of glass (or resin? plastic?) tiles with a custom picture on the bottom.

*Correction** – He sells tailor-made rings or a key chain for only 200 NT, and a key cover also only 250 NT.

I might order 10 custom ones with my logo, 米 inside. Steven said, he can do it on the spot with a picture you have (just smaller than 1″ squared) or you can email him and he can do it. If you want 10, it would take about 3-5 days.

Another cool thing was that they were all glow-in-the-dark. Steven was all too quick to show this off, as he had set up a lamp to prove it. (I have no idea how he got power on a mat on the grass, but props to dragging the extension cord!) He could speak English and Chinese, and was an interesting character to talk to. If you want to inquire about his product, please email Steven: dingli168@gmail.com

Pictured here with his friend and neighbor seller, wearing her custom made mask (Have I seen these somewhere before?):

She had some self designed glow-in-the-dark rings, but I didn’t get her real name, only K82 on her sign:

Not too far away was this cool chick(on the left), although I really should’ve gotten her picture before she was handed her noodle dinner. Sorry, girl.

She said she’s part of the collective KIDZ AT T DISCO, and they have a party coming up n HsinJu. Their slogan is “We make things happen.” I got a free sticker too. Check out their blog, they got some posts of interest, and some music vids too. Pretty Sure she’s one of Jo’s friends (of Pet Shops Girl) If you haven’t clicked any links on here, these are the two to click. Excellent display of brave Taiwanese style!

This is the purse I bought from her. It’s actual thick rough leather, painted on the outside only. (The inside is grey.)

Did it come from Bangkok? Some people think so…they say the same company also makes leather bracelets that snap on. Hmmm

It didn’t come with a strap and she told me I had to add my own. The strap in the picture I found over at the Shadow booth:

These two were fun to talk to. I’ve seen them before, set up in the Red House Theater market in Ximen. I like Shadow because it has a really strong brand identity, and the cut-outs are cool. I first saw them maybe 1 or 2 years ago. About half or more of the designs are the same. An experienced seller told me it’s smart to sell what’s selling, so they must be doing something right! I’m looking forward to seeing them in October!

If you want more of their stuff (necklaces, phone charms, straps, & more) you can email them at: shadowboss_inc@yahoo.com.tw or go on Yahoo Auctions, but only in Chinese, sorry foreigners! Just scroll to the bottom of their Yahoo page to see their products and prices in $NTD.

On our grand tour around all of the tables, booths, and blankets on the grass, we came by these two lovely young lads, of FUCK BARBIE:

They made hand-made jewelry. I thought they had a creative point of view, and I really liked the styling of their suitcases. (Gotta get me one of those!) They had towering cake rings, little zippered change purses with stenciled cameras, metal/resin? collages as necklace pendants (like a picture of Mary with a Picasso face holding an AK47 with the words, I am NOT your Mother across the top), huge plastic jewels and real Barbie dolls, bunch more stuff. They are also selling on Yahoo Auctions, (although when I check they didn’t have anything listed), as well as XinMen Ding (in the Red Theater). If you wanna inquire, email janwa93@yahoo.com.tw.

Here’s Kiah with Mr.Still-Don’t-Know-Your-Name-But You’re-Pleasant Guy. Both rocking the Rice Society necklaces.

I was sad to leave around 5, just when it was starting to get good. I heard the crowd for the bands was intense, so many people there.

Words through the grapevine about selling there:

*Don’t be sitting out in the sun the whole day. It’s fucking hot and that makes you tired.

*It’s the cheap-o gimme a deal or I’ll walk crowd. Low prices make the sale, more expensive items, almost no interest.

Things Kiah and I realized after doing the rounds and scoping everyone’s booth:

*Color and branding are the two major draws to any booth. Others just blended in.

*Sign/banner is a must

*Don’t block yourself in with you on one side, customers on the other.

*Have a mirror!

It’s super easy to tell which people selling there took their business seriously and professionally, and those just out to do their best (low-quality) efforts. It makes a real difference when you take the extra step in quality, instead of just choosing the cheapest materials to complete your project. There were some accessories I would’ve bought, had I not noticed the sloppy glue job, or that they used really low-quality material. It’s that extra little care and attention that makes the purchase worthwhile.
