Contra, Vampire Weekend’s second album, will be released on January 12, 2010, but it seems like before it is even leaked the band will hand out all the songs. Personally, I’m not complaining because it fixes my two issues: one, my love for Vampire Weekend and two, my hate for waiting. The only issue is the newest track that they gave up isn’t really “new” at all. If you are a follower of Vampire Weekend you would know that “White Sky” has been played by VW through festivals and concerts, which is why it sounds more like their debut  album than “Cousins” or “Horchata.” With an arpeggiated piano chord and plinky guitar “White Sky” soars as the best “leak” from Contra yet.

When I first heard this song, I immediately played 20 other times, which shows how quickly this song gets implanted into your membrane. The chorus is reminiscent to “this is the song that never ends”, but regardless I can see this being a number one for Mary J Blige. It was almost genius to have Jazmine Sullivan on this track; the passing of the torch from one “soul sista” to another. (By the way while typing this up, I’ve listened to it 3 times more).

Vampire Weekend – White Sky (taken Down by Label Request)

I’m going to pretend that the last few months haven’t happened – just assume that the extended hiatus of this blog is a figment of your imagination. Yes, I’m a slacker. I’m also a stupidly busy student/journalist/trouble-maker.

OK, poor excuses over, let’s crack on with the music. One of my favourite albums of last year was Vampire Weekend’s eponymous debut – not only because it was a smart, concise album of intelligent and fun pop music, but also because it was pretty much the soundtrack to my first year at university. Having seen them open for Blur at the Hyde Park gig, during which they treated anyone who could muster a smile to a selection of new tracks, it was evident to me that their follow-up might be riskier and bit more grown-up, but would still provide maximum enjoyment.

On the evidence of the new single, “Cousins”, taken from the album Contra, fans of the band will have very little to be disappointed about. The song is snappy and catchy; it has frequent frenetic breakdowns; Ezra Koenig’s famous wit and skills of observation are still very much intact. More intriguingly, the song reminds me of early Police – there’s something about the punky tone of the guitar and the fluid bassline that had me hearkening back to the delights of “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “Message In A Bottle”.

“Cousins” displays a fondness for experimentation, too: the bells at the end certainly do little to link the band with the Afro-pop of their first record. It would appear that the band’s searching for innovative and fun sounds have taken them further afield than Africa, this time round, and this was probably crucial, lest they continue to be considered in thrall to a singular sound. Furthermore, the frantic twin-guitar interplay that fills every chunk of air in the song shows off some fascinating echoes of Arabic music.

The evidence so far suggests that Contra is going to be a bit of everything, musically: the opener, “Horchata”, is heavy on twinkly keys, tribal percussion and programmed beats; live favourite “White Sky” is like a supercharged Afro-pop hit of yesteryear, with call-and-response backing vocals recalling tropical adventures. Now, we have “Cousins” – a brave stab at poppy punk that sees the band unafraid to fill the space that so characterised their debut effort, with chaotic percussion and delightful fretwork. Hopefully, the album’s release will excite and amaze existing fans, while drawing in a new batch of pop music lovers. Because when you cut through all the global/world-music hype, Vampire Weekend excel at making truly special popular music.

By all accounts, yesterday’s Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2010 presentation, “Plato’s Atlantis,” was the most amazing visual treat of the season. And this from a man who once projected a hologram of Kate Moss on the catwalk.

Wednesdays sometimes require a certain kind of disciple and dedication. It’s the farthest day you can be from the weekend, and I know that as soon as I wake up, that fact stares me straight in the face. Realizing that I have the option, if I really wanted to, to just stay in bed and sleep for ever and ever, I am almost defeated. It doesn’t help that I have a mattress pad that feels like a cloud filled with pure happiness, or that my comforter knows exactly just what temperature I’m most comfortable in, or that my pillow is one of those memory foam ones that conforms to the shapes of my head. It sure as hell doesn’t help that I didn’t get to sleep till four in the morning and my time of waking was supposed to be just three hours later. At that point, I allow myself the luxury that is Americanized sleep for just five more minutes (okay, maybe another hour…), but I don’t really sleep. I use this time to try my best to remember my dreams, to give myself a little guidance in the upcoming unknown day, and I use that time to reflect on all of the wonderful places and things I did in the day that came before this horrid Wednesday morning. I remember the friends I met, the souls I warmed, the ideas I encouraged, the lovers I made, the music I created, and the time I spent. None of this happened to anyone else on the Earth on that day; all of that happened because I made  conscious decisions that no one else could make, and because of that, I really enjoyed my day. Now, I get to thinking- what makes this day, Wednesday, any different from any other day? Is there anything really different about today then yesterday? Sure it may be a bit colder, sure it may be a different named day according to us silly humans, but all in all, it’s a day that holds just as much possibility as the one that came before it. It’s up to us to do something, take advantage of that fact that we are alive yet another day, and do what we think is good. And with this knowledge, and this playlist, I got up today, ready to spin some more destiny to more unsuspecting souls.

Think of it as Shark Week, but with vampires.

While I normally require a certain level of intoxication to sit through the heart-wrenching Twilight (wait, maybe it’s only heart-wrenching because I’m intoxicated?), November’s sequel New Moon may be bearable for one reason and one reason only: its soundtrack.

It’s rumored that the chick-flick’s sweet and dramatic symphonies will be provided by a veritable force of indie musicians that, so far, includes Muse, Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke and Bon Iver. The soundtrack’s first single, “Meet Me on the Equinox,” was released earlier this week by none other than my favorite band: Death Cab for Cutie, who, to no one’s surprise and my pleasure, have infused the track with guitarist Chris Walla’s dark, blood-sucking chords and Benjamin Gibbard’s longing vocals. Death Cab have now virtually assured themselves of adding millions of teenage girls to their fan base.

Also making waves in the vampire world are Vampire Weekend, who have sunk their teeth well into sophomore album Contra, slated for release on Jan. 12, 2010. The foursome have incorporated Contra’s “White Sky” into their live shows for over a year now, adding to a set list that is usually limited to the New Yorkers’ inaugural, self-titled album. And to round out this week’s vampire happenings, what guy wouldn’t want to watch Megan Fox sink her pearly whites into human bodies in this weekend’s Jennifer’s Body? Oh, there’s also that new show “Vampire Diaries,” but sans indie rockers and Megan Fox, I suspect I’d need quite a few drinks before agreeing to sit through that one.

Nova música do Vampire Weekend!

Jag har lyssnat på låten ni kan hitta här fem gånger nu, jag fick ner den för 18 minuter sedan.

A new song, “White Sky” from Vampire Weekend.  Album might be out in the fall.

Igual que hicieran Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! hace poco, Vampire Weekend escogieron un late show norteamericano para estrenar una nueva canción, llamada ‘White Sky‘ y que según el presentador estará en su próximo disco, que nadie sabe cuándo saldrá pero a juzgar por lo visto seguro que no falta demasiado (ellos dicen que para finales de año). Porque la canción parece completamente terminada, con unos deliciosos arreglos de cuerda, y una melodía muy pero que muy afropop que a mí me ha seducido por completo y me ha hecho recordar por qué escogimos el suyo como el mejor disco de 2008. ¡Qué canción tan bonita! Estaré toda la noche imitando el falsete de Ezra, me temo… Vean, vean. (Vía Msfera)

Last year Vampire Weekend made me love spring again with their up-beat afro pop music. This is their new unreleased song, and it appears they will not dissappoint on followups to their debut album. The vocals are insane. I like how their string section is all wearing ponchos.

Vampire Weekend – White Sky (live)

O Vampire Weekend participou do programa de Jimmy Fallon na última quarta feira, dia 18. Em vez de tocarem alguma música do último CD, lançado ano passado, eles escolheram a “nova” White Sky. A canção será parte do novo álbum da banda, a ser lançado  no segundo semestre.

Ivy League rockers Vampire Weekend debuted a new song presumably from their yet-to-be-titled sophomore album on the Jimmy Fallon Show earlier this week.

Full of airy melodies, ornate percussion and string arrangements, “White Sky” brims with the accents that defined Vampire Weekend’s quirky, West African-inspired sound on their first album.

Hopefully, they will stick to this sound as we hear more material leading up to the release of their new album. Let us know what you think.

You Should Know This By Now.

Vampire Weekend llevan un año de locos. Su primer disco ha sido considerado de los mejores del año pasado (y con razón) y desde su salida se han pasado los días tocando alrededor del mundo. Entre tanto han tenido tiempo de ir haciendo canciones nuevas, o por lo menos una, que presentaron el otro día en el Late night With Jimmy Fallon, White Sky. Y puede que sea por el ajetreo que se han traído todo este tiempo, pero la verdad es que personalmente creo que es una canción bastante flojilla y monótona. Acompañados de instrumentos de cuerda, unos bongos y de un tipo con una especie de instrumento en forma de pez globo se pasan 4 minutos con lo mismo. Yo lo atribuyo al poco tiempo ‘libre’ que han tenido los de New York, esperemos que sea eso. Vídeo a continuación.

It’s pretty much set in stone that Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is only going to book the trendiest things going, so what took them so long to get Vampire Weekend? The band stopped by last night to perform ‘White Sky’ which we’ve heard live before. This time around the band performed it with a string section.  I’m hoping the band makes it past their ‘dreaded album 2′ curse,  because even though I didn’t think it at first, I’m pretty sure Vampire Weekend has some solid staying power. Only time will tell I guess.
