Sans qu’on sache dans quelle proportion se situent les affections pulmonaires graves dont on a pu apprécier les sordides descriptions dans les nombreux témoignages qui parviennent sur les sites d’information alternative : poumons noirs, brûlés, gorgés de sang, hémorragies pulmonaires, décès en quelques jours.

Le Belarus subit les mêmes maux. Le récent témoignage d’un médecin local décrit une maladie similaire « qui est comme un feu qui, s’il n’est pas éteint, brûle tout […] la structure du virus est celle d’une grippe espagnole ». Curieusement, rien ne filtre de ce pays, les dernières statistiques fiables datent du 10 novembre, et indiquaient 223.000 malades.

Aux Etats-Unis, où des pathologies similaires viennent d’être signalées dans l’IOWA (voir mon précédent article), c’est une vague de résistance au Tamiflu qui vient d’être signalée par Niman, où, contrairement aux affirmations de Roche qui défendent une mutation spontanée, il avance la théorie que c’est déjà le D225G qui se transmet par supports multiples en se recombinant. Il sera difficile, maintenant que l’OMS a admis l’existence d’une mutation aux Etats-Unis, de ne pas y voir le D225G, d’autant avec les similarités pathologiques de l’IOWA. Raison de cette résistance farouche des médias américains ? C’est la même souche que la grippe espagnole de 1918 !

Alors que Niman explique qu’en finalité les échantillons de Norvège contiendraient essentiellement le D225E, plutôt que le D225G, présent sur un seul échantillon norvégien, mais majoritaire dans les échantillons ukrainiens , arrive la question du jackpot :

Niman : – La cible du vaccin n’était pas le clone avec le D225G

A : – Reposons la question à nouveau : Peut-on raisonnablement penser que le vaccin contienne de quoi atteindre le D225G ?

Niman : – Non. D225G n’est pas dans le vaccin actuellement utilisé dans les vaccinations (il était dans un clone non sélectionné pour la chaîne de fabrication) »

Si Niman avertit que le virus se propage toujours, et pense qu’il va poursuivre sa propagation avec la chute des températures, il ne se prononce pas pour 2010. Personne ne s’étonnera donc du forcing médiatique à faire gober l’actuel vaccin à tous les moutons planétaires. Si D225G doit prospérer, il y aura bien un second vaccin à gober en 2010, et nul doute qu’on passera du gavage médiatique au gavage physique, c’est-à-dire qu’il sera obligatoire, quelles que soient les saloperies qu’il pourra contenir.

The main cause of the hysterical response to the swine flu epidemic, according to reporters from the Danish newspaper ‘Information’, is not because it is so dangerous, but because of a strong public relations campaign by experts from WHO. Some of them [WHO experts] are literally in the service of the vaccine manufacturers.

“It is disturbing that many of the scientists who sit on various committees of WHO, are presented as ‘independent experts’, but they carefully conceal the fact that they receive money from pharmaceutical companies”, Professor of epidemiology, Tom Jefferson, who works at the Cochrane Center in Rome, told reporters.

WHO announced the swine flu pandemic under pressure from a panel of advisers, headed by a Dutch doctor, Albert Ostenhaus, nicknamed ‘Dr. Flu’ (from the name ‘Tamiflu’) because he was active in promoting mass vaccination of the population through WHO and the Western media. The new disease originating in the Ukraine and slowly spreading through Europe is said to be very similar to the 1918 flu that killed millions. Reports claim the pneumonic plague is a combination of three different types of flu strains. It’s being called black lung because in x rays of victims their lungs are black.

The President of Ukraine said “People are dying. The epidemic is killing doctors. This is absolutely inconceivable in the 21st Century. We have sent the analysis to Kiev. We don’t believe its H1N1 swine flu. Neither do we know what kind of pneumonia it is.”

The black lung is being called some sort of viral pneumonia and is said to be very aggressive killing hundreds of people. Officials have contacted the WHO (World Health Organization) and a team of specialists are investigating.

There are conspiracy theories to this new epidemic and this one is perhaps the strangest yet.

Universities, schools and kindergartens have been closed, public meetings have been banned and theaters shut. Last week several border crossings in the country were also closed.

Last night reports emerged of profiteering over face masks, which have sold out since the outbreak. There are also incidents of anti-virus medication being sold for exorbitant prices. A spokesman for the World Health Organization said: “We do not have a time scale for the results of the tests in London, although some preliminary results have been obtained. A doctor in Western Ukraine who did not want to be named, said:” We have carried out post mortems on two victims and found their lungs are as black as charcoal.

“They look like they have been burned. It’s terrifying.”

 “A fascinating, well written book” 2009-11-14

Liaquat Ahamed is a gifted writer and “Lords of Finance” is a fascinating, well written book.

“Lords of Finance” is a history of central banking, in the decades leading up to the Great Depression. This history starts before the first world war and then stretches through the post war years of German war reparations and the rise of the Nazis. Ahamed is a very engaging writing and the book pulls the reader in. The history related by Ahamed makes several interesting points. Although “gold bugs” still exist (people who believe in the gold standard for money), such a standard is absurd in the modern world. As modern industrial society was born, the gold standard created many more problems than it solved. Ahamed’s history also reminds me that the idea that people do what is in their best interest is patently false. It was obvious to many that the first world war would be ruinous to Germany, France and England, although no one could have imagined how completely ruinous it would be. Yet the world, and especially Germany, rushed into war, shattering the world the world that people know.

There is no “true” history. In Ahamed’s history, the Great Depression was caused by long running structural problems, not simply a stock market bubble or even the poorly considered short term financial policies. Today we tend to look back at the distant mirror of the Great Depression and wonder if it holds lessons for us today. All history holds lessons, of course, but those times seem very different from ours. Our current economic calamity stems also from long term policies, but in our times these policies were thoughtless regulation and dogmatic belief in the power of an unregulated market to cure all ills. Until there was a crash and then even the those claiming to believe in free markets were baying for bailouts.

I also recommend Robert K. Massie’s book Dreadnought, which provides some background on the arms race and German insecurity and egotism that lead to World War I.

If you desire an in-depth look at the role of the key economic players, and the evolution of economic/monetary policies of the U.S., U.K., France and Germany leading up to and during the Great Depression – this volume of scholarly insight is for you.

An excerpt is particularly poignant for the present day perils we are struggling with: “The Great Depression was not some act of God or the result of some deep-rooted contradictions of capitalism but the direct result of a series of misjudgments by economic policy makers, some made back in the 1920’s, others after the crisis set in – by any measure the most dramatic sequence of collective blunders ever made by financial officials…authority at the Fed shifted to a group of inexperienced and ill-informed timeservers, who believed the economy would return to an even keel (emphasis is mine).” Pp. 501 & 503

 “interesting perspective on major central bankers of the day” 2009-10-21

This book was enjoyable to read and its audience is wide. If one wants to get a sense of the people making policy decisions, their biases and sequential actions from the time of the first world war until the great depression, this is a very interesting read.

At the heart of the argument is the pegging to the gold standard was a distinct cause of the depression by overconstraining central banks flexibility. Keynes’s interactions with Norman show the battle between fiat currency perspectives and commodity and physical store of value based perspectives (the aftermath shows the author’s perspective on who eventually turned out to be right). The lessons one can draw from the book are well argued and I think valuable, personally i believe the argument, though I think some readers over-emphasize the gold standard vs some of the authors focus on the retribution tactics due to war reparations, and also how that formed german/french perspectives and strong adversarial nature.

At the end of the day though this book is enjoyable to read and illuminates the personalities and personal biasis that existed among the worlds major central bankers in their day. Whether one is convinced as whether the causes of the depression that are most focused on (ie the gold standard and the focus on money supply management that arose from hoarding and counterparty fear constraining ability to move or create money where it was needed rather than flowing) are in fact the principal components, you still manage to get a lot out of the book and i havent read other accounts that have taken this “middle of the road” approach in mixing the history as well as economics together. The result to me is a more historical rather than economically precise but that I think is a good thing as it eases one the subject and its a book that one can read quite “lightly”.

This book is full of interesting information about how four central bankers drifted from the gold standard and brought about the Great Depression. It is also a portend of the current world paradigm, which has reulted in a global financial system which will endeavor install the World Bank as the World Central Bank.

The book is interesting but meanders too much. I am finding that the author goes off on so many useless tangents and includes too muany details about irrelevant things, that I am just getting bored. As I am reading, I want the author to get to the point instead of wasting my time with trifling details.

If he wanted to delve more into the personalities, the book should have been as a narrative….or historical novel.

The book is too much work. I feel as though I have to chop through underbrush to get to the salient points.

I am only partially way through. I will finish the book, but will likely just skim the rest, scanning for interesting parts along the way.

Overall, good book, but written in a tedious, unfocused fashion.

Lords of Finance is about the central bankers who contributed to the Great Depression, in England, France, Germany, and the US. One of the author’s theses is that although we usually think of the Great Depression as having being caused by large impersonal forces beyond human control, in fact it was the discrete and wrong headed choices of these four bankers that helped bring down the international financial system, in large part by a stubborn adherence to the gold standard. So it makes one think of the recent financial crisis, and wonder if a handful of similar people could have made ‘better choices.’

It’s bracing stuff for economic history, even though you know sort of how the story resolves itself. Here the economics is very personal as the relationships between Strong (US Federal Reserve), Schact (Germany Reichsbank), Norman (Bank of England), and Moreau (Banque de France) determine the fate and character of what ultimately becomes the Great Depression–the opportunities lost, the bad policies, the pressure each faced at home from political considerations. In short, it is as exciting as a history of central banking could possibly be. It’s also interesting to see the ‘results’ of their work on history in their personal lives. Norman, for example, was very kind about sending Schact ‘care packages’ after the war when he was interned and put on trial at Nuremberg.

The basic gist of the story emerges after WWI, when countries who temporarily went off the gold standard then return as an article of economic faith. (Keynes appears and is blistering in his critique throughout.) The problem is, to get back on gold, countries’ currency must either devalue, or deflate, with particular consequences. Strong and Norman deflate, but Moreau and Schact devalue. Deflationary excess ruins the economy as prices shrink and consumers stop spending money waiting for prices to continue to go down. Devaluation risks hyperinflation, as it did in Germany, where the Reichsbank was printing trillions of marks a day and people would spend their wages as soon as they received them. The price of a cup of coffee would increase by the time you finished your first cup. The story of reparations and paying for them looms large in the story, the failure of financial ventures stressing the system, and the ultimate collapse in 1932 with bank ‘holidays’–the end of the banking system. Gold was an aggravating factor in what was really a series of crises which occurred in a short period of time that collectively caused the Great Depression, from hyperinflation in the 20s to the Stock Market crash.

The personal angles of these individuals is also interesting. Strong maintained US policy through sheer force of personality, to some detriment to his own health and personal life. His wife left him and he eventually died on the operating table from a lifelong health condition, probably aggravated by stress, in 1928. His demise sent the Federal Reserve system into a tailspin, as it was apparently his force of personality that held the early system together, as it was consistently challenged by insitutional deficiencies (e.g. each of the 12 reserve banks could propose policy, but the Board could only veto, and although all 12 were ‘equal’, some banks like the NY Fed, were much more important financially than others)

All four central bankers had personal relationships with each other, wanting to help each other out, but also had to respond to very different political agendas at home, in addition to keeping gold sacrosant.

I was reading an exerpt of ‘In Fed We Trust’ from the WSJ recently, and I was struck by the ‘personal being political’ issues which haven’t changed in almost 100 years. Bernanke’s struggle to cobble together a deal in Fall 2008, ultimately persauding Treasury to go to Congress for a bailout, eerily echoed Strong’s successor trying to put something together between the Hoover and Obama administrations.

Bernanke was in a similarly tough spot–in a way, similar to the ‘global warming problem’. That is, by the time you can definitvely point out where everybody agrees ‘hey this is a big effing problem’ across party lines, it’s too late and everybody fries. On Bernanke’s view he should have acted earlier, but, he suppposes, if he had acted much later, he’s pretty certain we would have seen Depression 2.0

That would not have been pretty at all. I’m not sure how long our society–and the world– would have functioned with the banks closed, credit cards useless, no access to mutual funds, the stock market shut down, etc. Not bloody long working with just the dollars in your pocket!

In this light, it’s funny to me how the California budget crisis sort of mirrors the issues of that period as well. Apparently this is much of their own making, with various propositions requiring certain funding by law which they cannot escape, plus some stringent budget balancing law (which sort of all ends up paralleling the Gold Standard). Apparently they’ve been able to cobble together a deal with alot of ‘one offs’ which will keep the State running another year. However, alot of the cuts are exactly the policies you *do not* want to enact in a recession–cutting jobs, salaries, etc. This is exactly the ‘orthodoxy’ Herbert Hoover was pursuing–balancing the budget–which itself helped aggravate the Depression. Hoover was educated at Stanford so maybe there’s a funny parallel there, too. But I don’t know alot about California budgetary politics and their actual constraints, so I am talking out of school on this one.

He is a talented communicator if nothing else, and a genuine online friend. And those who have socialised with him in real life speak fondly of the man.

Norway and Britain may have some troubling news regarding the Swine Flu.

A National Emergency of the Swine flu may be improving, at least for now.

Obviously, the Swine flu is far from over. A peak may be seen in America and in Western Europe. The wave of infections seems to be increasing in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Over 6,700 deaths worldwide have been recorded as a direct result of the Swine Flu.

Though, it has been argued, cases may increase in January and several peaks could be seen in the typical single flu season whether human flu or H1N1.

There are “early signs of a peak in disease activity in some areas of the northern hemisphere,” the WHO said in a statement.

Drug-Resistant Swine Flu

The real concern or next phase of concern may be moving to a possible drug resistance by the swine flu virus in certain countries.  The spread of this strain may be occurring in Great Britain.

Importantly, this does not mean a resistance to the vaccine!!

5 individuals in Wales were found to be resistant to the antiviral drug “Tami-flu” from companies Roche AG and Gilead Sciences Inc

These patients did have success with a different antiviral from other companies GlaxoSmithKline and Biota Inc’s “Relenza”.

Each of these patients also had serious immune problems that may have given the strain an opportunity to develop resistance.

Another outbreak is being investigated in Norway where a strain of H1N1 may have mutated causing symptoms that were worse than expected and rather severe.

Recently the Norwegian Institute of Public Health reported that the virus may be able to go deeper into the respiratory system as a result, the symptoms were more serious.

The virus mutation was found on autopsy of two individuals that had died from the Swine flu.

Norway has seen a larger number of deaths per population when compared to other European countries.

Swine Flu Available Vaccines

World production continues to move forward when it comes to the  H1N1 vaccinations.   But truthfully, the world population and the number of vaccines available is quite large.  It is unlikely that a bridge will be able to connect the two sides any time soon.

The United States and several other countries are far behind where they would like to be.  Some countries report a shortage in the vaccine production.   Currently 44 million doses have been shipped so far.    This is only 30% of the anticipated amount.

Plateau

Several countries including the Untied States and Western Europe have experienced a decrease in number of new cases of the Swine flu within the past few weeks.

The question is whether this is a shift or a plateau.  Eastern European countries and Asia have seen an increase in cases.

The next few weeks will be telling for the projection of Swine Flu cases in the New year.

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) — Adrian Gibbs, the virologist who said in May that swine flu may have escaped from a laboratory, published his findings today, renewing discussion about the origins of the pandemic virus.

The new H1N1 strain, which was discovered in Mexico and the U.S. in April, may be the product of three strains from three continents that swapped genes in a lab or a vaccine-making plant, Gibbs, and fellow Australian scientists wrote in Virology Journal. The authors analyzed the genetic makeup of the virus and found its origin could be more simply explained by human involvement than a coincidence of nature.

Their study, published in a free, online journal reviewed by other scientists, follows debate among researchers six months ago, when Gibbs asked the World Health Organization to consider the hypothesis. After reviewing Gibbs’ initial three-page paper, WHO and other organizations concluded the pandemic strain was a naturally occurring virus and not laboratory-derived.

“It is important that the source of the new virus be found if we wish to avoid future pandemics rather than just trying to minimize the consequences after they have emerged,” Gibbs and colleagues John Armstrong and Jean Downie said in today’s eight- page study.

Bird Flu Pandemic - November 25, 2009

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine.

 

New reports from Iowa and North Carolina are raising concerns that the deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations that have been confirmed by the WHO in Ukraine, Norway and elsewhere have already reached the United States.  In Iowa, a report that doctors are seeing “very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them” in H1N1 patients is creating concerns among health experts that the deadly Ukraine H1N1 has already spread there. 

In addition, a report of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 swine flu in North Carolina is raising questions about the ability of medical authorities to combat H1N1 if thousands of people do start dying.  If deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations have already reached the United States, what does that mean?  Doctors in Ukraine have been reporting that victims of H1N1 there are experiencing violent hemorrhaging in their lungs. As the patients near death, their lungs reportedly become as “black as charcoal” and literally begin to disintegrate.  Will this start happening soon inside the U.S.?

The news report causing the most concern today is the one about H1N1 patients in Iowa.  Commenting on a dramatic spike in H1N1 deaths in Iowa, Dr. Gregory Schmunk told KCCI news that what doctors there are seeing ”is very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them.”

Hemorrhagic lungs that are filled with blood? That sounds precisely like what is taking place in Ukraine.

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine. This H1N1 mutation involved a receptor binding domain change, and it is apparently causing the H1N1 virus to become much more virulent.

Just like the new report in Iowa, many victims of H1N1 in Ukraine have been experiencing violent hemorrhaging in the lungs.  Temperatures inside the lungs of patients in Ukraine have been reported to be as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit.  As the patient near death, the lungs turn to mush and literally become as black as charcoal.

Parents are often really confused about this issue…when you have a sick child, when are they “sick enough” to take them to the hospital ER or when can it wait?  When your child is sick with the flu, deciding when to head to the emergency room can be very difficult decision.

The novel H1N1 “likes” young children and it can be dangerous and swift, striking hard with little warning.

The CDC estimated earlier this month that more children have died from the H1N1 flu than people over 65, about 540 children as of mid-October compared to 440 seniors. The CDC also recently reported that flu deaths in young children were continuing to rise. An estimated 2,900 adults between 18 and 64 have died. Most years, 90% of people who die of the flu are 65 or older, officials said.

Thankfully the life-threatening cases remain unusual.  As parents grow more concerned, doctors also are seeing an increase in what is called the “worried well,” who seek emergency care for relatively healthy children.  The harder question is this…when should you take your child to the emergency room? When is it really serious? Doctors say parents and guardians should assess how sick a child is in part based on experience.

The warning signs to look out for include:

• Significant difficulty breathing
• Inability to drink fluids or urinate for more than six hours
• Change in the color of the mouth or lips
• Unusual behavioral changes, such as a crying child who cannot be consoled, or a child who doesn’t wake up or walk or talk normally.
• If any of those symptoms show up in children, parents should take them to the emergency room, as respiratory infections are often things that are the most life-threatening in children.

Lung inflammation is particularly dangerous to infants and young children because their airways are smaller. According to the California Department of Public Health, the flu virus replicates in the airways and lungs, causing them to swell. The inflammation makes it difficult for the lungs to work, reducing the body’s ability to take oxygen into the bloodstream.

In California, the most common H1N1 deaths have been viral pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, state health officials wrote in a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Assn. Experts are telling clinicians to treat the H1N1 strain differently than the seasonal flu.

(JAMA) editorial published earlier this month, former CDC director Julie Louise Gerberding wrote that patients who have a five- or six-day history of flu-like illness and whose ability to breathe is worsening “appear to be at risk for rapid deterioration” and should be treated with antiviral drugs and admitted to the hospital.

“Clinicians should not be falsely reassured by previous good health, young age and absence of major comorbidities because these characteristics do not exclude the potential for respiratory failure and death,” Gerberding wrote. The CDC has also warned that some physicians are not prescribing antiviral drugs to H1N1 patients, pointing to studies that show that about 25% of hospitalized patients with lab-confirmed H1N1 did not receive Tamiflu or similar drugs.

Even among those who did get antiviral drugs, medication was often delayed for one or two days after they were admitted to a hospital, the CDC said. California health officials have also said that antiviral medication can reduce mortality even when given late, which is defined as more than 48 hours after symptoms begin.  Although most people who are hospitalized or have died from H1N1 have underlying medical conditions, a significant proportion of H1N1 victims are otherwise healthy.

“What’s surprising about this flu is . . . we’re seeing patients between the ages of 10 and 47 with no underlying medical problems that are getting into trouble. And that’s scary for us, because it’s hard to know who is going to get in trouble,” said Dr. Gail Carruthers, director of the pediatric emergency department at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital.

Sometimes, patients will report flu-like symptoms for as little as three hours or as long as two weeks, then quickly become significantly worse. Their lungs begin to fail and fill up with fluid, requiring intensive care. Carruthers recalled two recent patients, a teenager and a middle-aged person, whose lungs began failing even though they had no underlying medical conditions. “It’s almost like watching them drown,” Carruthers said. “They feel like they can’t get any air.” But, Carruthers added, “if you don’t feel short of breath, and you have a dry cough, you’re probably fine staying at home.”
