Y.S. es una de las personas a las que más teme Raúl Castro. Nació en la Habana en 1975, se licenció en Filología Hispánica en el año 2000 pero el desencanto que le produjo el contacto con la intelectualidad oficialista, la relegó a una oscura oficina. De la cual sólo pudo salir, en 2004, por la misma puerta que millones de sus compatriotas, la del exilio.

Y.S. parecía condenada a engrosar la lista de anónimos cubanos hasta que en 2004, por motivos familiares, tuvo que regresar a la isla.

Allí junto a un grupo de intelectuales afínes funda la revista de reflexión y debate Consenso y, en 2007, crea el blog Generación Y con la finalidad poder expresar como internauta lo que le está vedado como ciudadana.

Un año después ese blog recibió el premio Ortega y Gasset de periodismo y, la revita Times, lo eligió uno de lso 25 mejores blogs del mundo y a su autora la incluyó entere las 100 personas más influyentes del planeta.

Pero sin duda el mayor de los reconocimientos a su labor llegó unos meses antes, cuando en marzo de 2008 el gobierno cubano implementó un filtró informático que impide el acceso a su blog en los sitios públicos de Internet en Cuba.

Las siglas de Y.S, como ya habrá adivinado, responden al nombre de Yoani Sanchez, la filóloga que acabó dominado el lenguaje html.

AND………SO………you go through all the testing while you’re on the phone with him – figure it out – and now know WHAT MUST BE DONE – even MORE steps than you imagined (and they call this the super highway!??? – I’d say there are PLENTY OF YIELDS and blinking yellows around this cyberspace).

Anyway…guess it was just meant to be…and guess the bright side is, I had company while figuring it all out, which I couldn’t seem to find the patience for on my own….so

Thank you, Mr. Customer Service Man.  I have yet to do the LABORIOUS work that awaits me…but I now I know how!

You can’t find us from the WHOIS. This site’s domain is registered to the creators of WordPress.com. (haha.) If you’re trying to track us down from our .tk domain, you can’t do that either. Free .tk domains don’t belong to its users, and we’re on a free domain.

Once you have chosen the name you will use and made sure that it is available, visit some of the Internet registrars and find the one you want to use. What the registrar basically does is resells domain names.

The prices vary among the different ones but typically start at around $5.00 for a one year registration. They can go as high as $50 so finding the one that offers the best price can take some investigative work.

When you are ready to register the name, you will be required to provide either a PayPal account or a credit card to pay for it. This is not optional. Most all providers require this method of payment. On the plus side by paying using this method you can immediately have access to the name.

How Long Can You Keep the Domain Name?

You may also register the name for a longer period than one year but this is the minimum time. The domain name may be registered at some registrars for up to 10 years. ¿Cómo pasó Mark Zuckenberg, CEO de Facebook, de estudiante antisocial de la Universidad de Harvard a niño prodigio de Silicon Valley y millonario más joven de la lista de Forbes?

Esa es la pregunta a la que Ben Mezrich dá respuesta en su polémico libro: The accidental billionaires: the founding of Facebook, a tale of sex, money, genious and betrayal. Al que, recientemente, el diario chileno el Mercurio le dedicó un interesante reportaje.

Zuckernberg es retratado por Mezrich como un genio de la programación cuya obsesión por las mujeres era inversamente proporcional a su éxito con ellas.

Lo que explica que en su primer año en Harvard creara, con las fichas de sus compañeras que robó de los ordenadores de la universidad, una página en la que cualquiera pudiera valorar sus físicos.

Bastaron cuatro horas para que la página se colapsara y las autoridades académicas la clausuraran.

Pero las dotes para la programación de Zuckernberg, no pasaron desapercibidas para los gemelos Tyler y Cameron Winklevoss.

Que pidierón a Zuckerberg que los ayudara en la programación de una novedosa aplicación en la que estaban trabajando: Harvad Conection, un sitio web para que los estudiantes pudieran estar conectados. Y Zuckernberg lo hizo.

Pero nadie en el campus hablaba de Harvard Conection si no de TheFacebook: la página creada por Zuckernberg en la que cualquiera podía abrir un perfil con sus fotos y describir que estaba haciendo.

El éxito fué tal que los servidores no podían sostener el tráfico. Y ahí entró en escena un estudiante de último grado, el brasileño Eduardo Saverin, que vió antes que nadie el enorme potencial de la nueva aplicación. Y, a cambio de un 30% de la página web, puso de su bolsillo 20.000$ para que Zuckernberg adquiriera la infraestructura necesaria.

Rápidamente el éxito de Facebook, transcendió los límites del campus, y se unieron cientos de miles de estudiantes de otras universidades, institutos y colegios de EEUU. Y, al esquema original de Facebook, Zuckerberg añadió el “muro”, y luego los “grupos”.

Para entonces, ya habían llamado la atención de las sociedades de capital riesgo de Silicon Valley y de Sean Parker (fundador de la Napster) que ofrecen, a cambio de entrar en el accionariado de la compañía, el capital necesario para que Facebook no muriera de éxito.

Zuckerberg que desde 2005 vivía por y para Facebook acepta, aún siendo conciente de que ello implicaría que el 30% de Soverin quedaría reducido a una participación simbólica.

Los gemelos Winklevoss y Saverin demandaron a Facebook y lograron un arreglo extrajudicial confidencial. Sobre las cantidades sólo existen especulaciones pero, sin duda, no compensarán la pérdida del control sobre una aplicación cuyo crecimiento no parece tener límites.

Cinematográfica historia que se convertirá en una película que, según publicó FayerWayer, estará producida por Kevin Space, dirigida por David Fincher, con guión de Aaron Sorkiny y protagonizada por Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg y Andrew Garfiel que podrán rostro a Sean Parker; Mark Zuckenberg y Eduardo Saverin.

Así que ya saben, próximamente en los mejores cines: la verdadera historia Facebook.

Lo que no tendría nada de particular si no fuera porque ese treinteañero es Biz Stone y junto a sus amigos Evan Williams y Jack Dorsey creó el sinónimo del microblogging: twitter. La aplicación de moda en internet, cuyo valor bursátil supera los 1000 millones de dólares y crece a un ritmo  del 2.300% anual.

De ahí lo acertado del titular del periodista del Corriere della Sera autor del reportaje,“il pauperismo chic del (ricco) Mr Twitter”.

I found this weeks materials interesting, as I’ve often wondered how to explain exactly what the Internet is – and how it differs from the applications which use it. My understanding of the Internet has now changed to it being a network of interconnected computers which allows for the use of various different applications resulting in the many uses I have for it today.

Activity one involved using www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert/, a tool which visualizes the path taken to get to a web host. It was interesting to see how many ‘hops’ were made just to get to a website, especially considering how fast it occurs these days!

Having worked for a domain registrar previously, I had some knowledge of how domain names & IP addresses work, I’d also performed many whois searches while working there so activity two wasn’t too surprising. Here’s my results anyhow:

• Flickr.com – Yahoo! Inc.
• Youtube.com – Google Inc. (No suprise there considering their purchase of Youtube was fairly public)
• Mickey.com – Disney Enterprises, Inc.

As for the typo domains, I’m not suprised they are owned by Google & Yahoo -  registering typo domain names for traffic and the subsequent trademark violations has been an issue in the domain industry for quite some time. A great deal of my time working for the domain registrar/monetization program involved ‘vetting’ customer portfolios for trademarked domains.

I found the information on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) particularly interesting, as although I’ve used IRC a little, I have mostly avoided it in favor of modern instant messaging programs. Lately however I’ve been more involved with the Australian gaming community which I’ve discovered relies heavily on IRC to organize and communicate with eachother.

El éxito del MS-DOS, basado en las ideas de Kindall, inició el reinado de Microsoft. Pero supuso el principio del fin de la Digital Research como el mayor productor mundial de software para microcomputadoras.

En 1994, a los 52 años de edad y en extrañas circunstancias, Gary Kindall murió olvidado. Quienes lo conocieron afirman que nunca superó el haber sido, el hombre que pudo ser Bill Gates.

Umumnya dengan online tool whois.domaintools.com, kita juga dapat mengetahui name server dan domain registrar dari website tersebut, tetapi jika kita kurang mengerti informasi yang ditampikan akan sedikit kesulitan juga karena informasi yang ditampilkan sangat banyak dan kadang-kadang beberapa domain menggunakan child name server sehingga yang ditampilkan adalah ns1.blablabla.com dan ns2.blablabla.com dan informasi pemilik name server tersebut. Blablabla.com umumnya juga alamat web dari web host tersebut.

Kabar baik bagi para orang tua yang memiliki anak remaja yang gemar berinternet, “imhalal” adalah search engine yang bernuansa islami. Dengan search engine ini diharapkan dapat memfilter informasi yang berbau pornografi atau yang non islami.

Saya mencoba mengetikan keyword “Maria Ozawa Miyabi” di kolom Search, dan memilih Images Search . Lalu muncul tampilan dibawah ini :

Ternyata Search Engine imhalal yang oleh pemiliknya,Sardeha, yang tinggal di Belanda baru terdaftar sejak Februari 2009 ini masih membutuhkan perbaikan Pada bagian Image Search nya, karna hasil gambar yang ditampilkan masih terdapat foto-foto Maria Ozawa Miyabi memakai bikini. (tetapi tidak ditenukan foto tanpa busana sama sekali).

Saat saya mengetikan kata yang explisit berbau pornografi “Black Porn” langsung muncul peringatan berikut :

Oops! Your search inquiry has a Haram level of 3 out of 3! I would like to advise you to change your search terms and try again.

Nampaknya Search engine ini akan memiliki harapan yang baik, jika terus menerus diperbaiki, apalagi penduduk Indonesia kebanyakan beragana Islam.

Our second activity was too find out who owns certain domain names, using a WHOIS (a protocol used to look up registration information about domain and ip addresses)  search, which again was an easy task as all domain names have to be registered. I used the link provided by Tama and entered the first example, cutin.edu, which failed. The correct domain for Curtin is curtin.edu.au, which returned the expected reponse, that the domain belongs to Curtin University.

Other searches were performed for:

• flickr.com  – owned by Yahoo.
• youtube.com – owned by Google
• mickey.com – Buena Vista is the registrant, however, they are a Disney owned company

We were then asked to look at the follewing domains, which at first glance, look similar to the more famous and correct companies.

• gooogle.com – owned by Google
• yaho.com – owned by Yahoo

I can see a couple of reasons for Google and Yahoo owning these sites. One would be so that visiters who are typing in the url are taken to the correct site even if they type in or leave out an extra “o”. The other reason would be so that another company doesn’t use the similar sounding domain for commercial gain.
