Hello. So, you already know I got my DSi hooked up to Wi-fi. (Wireless Internet, basically) I also got my Wii hooked up to it to.

One of the best things you can use Wi-fi to is from Mario Kart Wii. You can race people from all around the world! It’s really cool. But guess who I raced against yesterday?

OBAMA

Seriously, I raced Obama. It said it was from Washington DC.

Also, there’s the Wii Shop Channel. You can also get new channels from there too. The new channels we got were the Nintendo Channel, Check Out My Mii channel, and Everybody Votes Channel. (I haven’t tried doing Sumper Smash Bros. Brawl yet :/)

Pantech intends to create an impact among cellphone users in the US with their latest release from AT&T – ironically, the cellphone itself has been named “Impact” for obvious reasons. This being the second Pantech handset to arrive in store shelves this coming holiday season, you will be able to choose from a couple of colors, where they are bright blue and soft pink. This cellphone will sport a totally new form factor that has never been found in AT&T’s stable of quick messaging phones, boasting a high-gloss faceplate with a haptic response touchpad, a couple of displays to keep up with the current trend, a full hidden keyboard as well as a bunch of the latest social and multimedia options to make sure that Gen Y folks remain connected in a fun manner all the time.

Impact offers a totally new user experience right from the get go, where its shiny blackout exterior is surrounded by textured blue or pink detailing. Every time the touchpad which is located below the screen is pressed, it will automatically spring to action, coaxing your hand to provide the finger taps it so craves in order to “answer” with a soft, tactile buzz. This allows the Impact to play and control music, make a call, or send texts without the need to open the phone.

The Impact also comes with a sideways flip that opens up to reveal full QWERTY keyboard which makes it a snap to compose those long winded emails to your Aunt Martha in a flurry, while even traditionally long text messages would fall prey to your brilliantly fast fingers as they dance across an all-too-familiar keyboard layout. Apart from that, you will also get a range of shortcut keys that make room for one-touch access to IM, text, email, and switching between applications. The second full-color display screen is great for viewing videos, friends’ profiles and flipping through images, while either side of the display houses speakers that makes tuning in to your favorite songs a joy. The Impact will retail for a surprisingly affordable $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate for a new 2-year contract.

Samsung Corby The colour- Very bright, young, and possible appreciated only by these kind of people

Samsung Corby

The colour- Very bright, young, and possible appreciated only by these kind of people

I had the Yellow. Bright, almost offensive (to some, not me!) yellow- though I clearly supported Pink in the Corby Colour wars on Twitter .

The look- Oh la la!

My first impression about Corby was that- it is a darn good-looking phone. And I think I’ll still stay by that first impression. I might’ve my sister in the background flashing her iPhone like iPod, but given the price point, Corby to me was a stunner at just the right price. I must also admit, that when I looked at it, it looked fine with/without the price. The preloaded themes were a far cry from what other phones in the market come with, and this I mean in a pretty good way. I loved them. They felt funny, warm, and went along perfectly well with the sunny look. It’s also got an iPod like cartwheel for sound adjustments. On a quick dip-stick survey of my cousins (17 and 21), my sister (24), my colleagues (both 24) and boss (38) – all of them loved the way it looked. I guess Corby’s got the look just right.

The touch- Delicate though very responsive

The second reason for not getting an iPhone (which I almost use as a cliché for a touch phone) is that I felt it would get my typing speed slowed down. Of course I never used an iPhone due to the first reason that it is obscenely overpriced in India (for what it provides). But I could see why data usage surged with the “touch”. Corby has a multitouch interface, which responds very quickly so that, I felt with the dictionary on, I was up to speed very very quickly (this is quite a deal, as my Fringe/ Gtalk speeds are not easily discernable, i.e. I type just as fast on the phone). It did feel a bit weird to use an all touch phone from my regular all button phone, but it was a great experience. Very quick. However, the one thing that was bugging at times was that one has to lock the phone/ screen even if one is holding the phone, as it is too responsive, so if you’re not locked, you’re sending messages and calling people randomly. Locking isn’t that tough, however, it is darn delicate.

Inserting address “kink”

On my current phone if I have people in a group e.g. School A, School B, School C etc., I can type A, B and reach the people easily through my address book. However the Corby doesn’t quite recognize A, B separately and only searches for ‘School’. I guess it’s the inability to recognize “groups”. And since all my contacts have a prefixed group, it’s slightly bugging.

Deal maker or deal breaker?- No Wi-Fi

I think Samsung got it right, however, my provider Vodafone (and all not just them) need to come up with better data plans. I do not know which data plan would meet the needs of the Corby phone, as I am pretty much on a Wi-Fi network on my regular phone. This to me was the biggest hindrance in say buying a Corby as I would want to access data with it on my Wi-Fi- which is a space Corby keeps away from. Is that how they keep an ASP of 7,900? Apparently, there are some good data plans with Airtel. Vodafone- anyone listening? Sigh!

Widgets? Useful, but not the most intuitive to get going

Corby has widgets on the home screen which point to social networking sites like Twitter/ Facebook etc. These I didn’t think were overly intuitive to use (without the manual i.e., considering I had a demo model).

Battery? Low, low!!

Considering it’s a big phone with a huge screen, I already felt battery would be an issue. But with my limited phone usage (I am not so much of a talker, though I have my share of data- not exhaustive, but still) it lasted me just less than a day. Now if college kids is what their target is, Corby massively falls short of the battery levels they need. As those kids text, and click pictures ALL of the time.

Pictures? 2 Mp- decent, but hey Video recording- awesomeness!

I use a 5Mp camera- which I pretty much think rocks. I was slightly (not overtly) shocked that 2 Mp was also decent. And the video recording was fine too, just that the sound recorded is low- but that’s a case with most phones.

Price? Perfecto!

This is where I feel Corby has got it perfect. It the right price for the model. Going by what Samsung had said on the launch of Jet, guess touch leadership is still in sight!

Well then, let’s have more rolling!!

If you haven’t noticed, the past week or so has been filled with… well, nothing. Not surprised? Technically, due to our crazy activeness in writing posts, you might have seen this coming. So. I have a more valid excuse this week, at least it’s a little less vague as “I was busy.” And way better than a disappointingly honest “I was just too lazy to give a cat’s whisker.” Although the last two are usually true, this week Jehovah has decided to at least give me an alibi for all of this blog’s millions of viewers.

My terribly horrible (no, I mean it was truly terribly horrible) reason is this: the internet. Or rather, airport. Or that little black box with the blinking green lights that’s plugged into the computer. I don’t really know the difference, and one day I’m going to ask Steve Jobs exactly why those little white boxes are called airports. It doesn’t really make much sense to me. All I know is that all of those things have decided to quit, or go on strike. Either that or they’re going through puberty as moody adolescents who throw fits and have mood-swings. If you didn’t understand my analogy, I mean that my internet sucks. When it works it works for an hour or less and only connects to one computer. In fact, it’s a miracle that I’m able to even publish this, since this is really an old post that I’ll be saving (and then publishing) when my internet connects for more than five minutes.

Have you ever gone camping? And not your lame excuse kind of camping where you pitch a tent in your backyard (or neighbor’s yard, if you want an adventure), but I mean in the (sort of) untouched wilderness of Utah, or Montana, or um… the park down the street. But anyway, the point is that things, things that normally don’t matter begin to become a hassle. Like washing your hands for example, brushing your teeth, avoiding bear wastes, or producing wastes. All of these things are hard to do whilst in the wilderness (might or might not apply to neighbor’s backyard). When you finally decide to take the long trek to the outhouse at night, everyone jumps up to go with you, you all need to take care of unfinished business. Right?

Well, the same goes for bad internet. When you haven’t used it in weeks and your email is piling up, or you haven’t harvested your crops on FarmVille and they’re all wilted, every chance you get to go do those things–you’ll take it. Which pretty much explains why my family takes a laptop with us wherever we go. If we’re at a coffee shop with free wi-fi: Get out the laptop! Cruising through residential areas: Get out the laptop! We’ve become first-class internet pirates. Although we don’t wear pirate hats or have parrots/monkeys on our shoulders, we are real deal. Taking over (not really) your internet for as long as we can. So beware, until I get my internet fixed, I might be parked outside your home, using your internet that you paid for with your own money (if you don’t have a password, that is) or rolling down your street at five miles per hour, looking for more internets to plunder. As a consolation, you should be honored.

Is Wi-Fi Radiation As Bad As Cell Phone Radiation?

Human beings are comprised of about 70% water, and radiation is readily absorbed by water. In certai

Human beings are comprised of about 70% water, and radiation is readily absorbed by water. In certain cases, various types of radiation can deform our basic cellular structure to certain levels which can eventually lead to our horrible, distorted, collective death. As a result of being human (the word human, in this instant, sounds pejorative, as if I were advocating radiation-resistant cybernetic body replacements, but I’m not), we are highly susceptible to organ tissue damage which in turn invites diseases such as cancer, tumors, and undesirable mutation.

It makes sense that Wi-Fi (as used for internet connectivity) radiation would seep effortlessly through the still developing skulls of children, so it stands to argue that Wi-Fi infused schools pose a threat to the overall well-being of the world’s childhood population, specially now that more and more schools are romancing over wireless connection capabilities. And with good reason.

This is a technology that has proven itself time and time again, it makes my life easier when I can carry my laptop from room to room without any worry that someone in full sprint will trip over my 20-foot long ethernet cable tethering my computer to the wall. But it may seem that my fears have been misplaced, because I can live with a broken laptop (standalone backup) but I don’t stand a chance to live a fruitful, happy life if my membrum virile begins to take on a frightening sentient autonomy.

Schools outfitted with Wi-Fi capabilities have been shown to emit radiation three times greater than cell phone masts and this has been perpetuated by mass media as concentrated rays of death, when more accurately, they’re a type of light poison that your body absorbs and over a length of continuous exposure may cause certain disease or death. Now, granted, cell phones themselves emit much larger levels of radiation, while Wi-Fi nodes emit radio waves similar to household microwave ovens, the radiation strength of Wi-Fi is 100,000 times less than of a conventional microwave oven.

Wi-Fi ready schools emit radiation levels higher than cell phone masts, but even then that’s still 600 times below government regulations. Which raises the question, is the basis of these safety limits wrong to begin with? Is this just the government attempting to herd the population and keep us all from assuming martial law? Everything is speculation at this point. Our tumors and cancers could simply be associated with our existing genetic code, or because of our genetic code we’re predisposed to a higher vulnerability of radiation.

Biology professor Henry Lai of Washington State University points out that throughout the two to three thousand studies having been conducted in the past 30 years only about half show any adverse effects while the other half show no effects at all. Wi-Fi connections have been around for that long? Absolutely. Radio waves and other non-ionising radiations have been in existence for a little more than a century. Think two-way radios, televisions, household radio story machines, etc.

Olga Naidenko, senior scientist at EWG, in conducting her own report states current standards reveal an increased risk of developing brain tumors over long-term use. Long-term, in her statement, consists of 10 years. Since we’re so new to this technology we, as a whole, won’t see any real proof that wireless radiation poses a veritable threat until a few more years down the line when the proposed effects of radiation poisoning from wireless machines begin to show up in epic numbers around hospitals worldwide.

We’re like cattle in that we’re easily frightened, falling into mass hysteria over the miseducation of a few charged particles floating around us. I found this comment on a Wales-based website urging everyone to lead a healthier life, to exercise regularly so that the human body can strengthen its immune system and do what it was built to do naturally. He accomplishes this in an arguably effective way and ties his opinion with a theory we both share:

People throw the term radiation around like we are talking about a nuclear reactor core or something similar. Wi-Fi uses a band of the electromagnetic spectrum that has approximately 1 million times less energy per photon than light “radiation” does. In these frequency bands it is strongly absorbed by water which humans are more than half composed of—all this does is warm up tissue—it can not [sic] damage DNA because it can not [sic] break chemical bonds readily. If you really want to avoid cancer, exercise, eat right, and stay away from smoking and drinking and above all open a damn book once in a while. This fear-mongering compounded by ignorance has got to stop.

Wi-Fi technology is still relatively new to the world’s population and this debate and its accompanying research is ongoing. All research, no matter how inconclusive, inherently dictates that the mass advantages outweigh a few of us dying from cancer. Cancer is now mostly treatable. The worry still lingers over the dangers of children being exposed to radiation, it’s our responsibility as adults and humans to watch over the well-being of children and the integrity of their minds. In the end, technology is racing around us, mutating and evolving, and it will continue in its own path allowing us its utilization. The least we can do is take responsibility for our own lives, to keep well informed and act accordingly; to try and lead a healthy life.

When Apple announced video capability in the iPod Nano and a video camcorder in the iPhone 3Gs, Cisc

When Apple announced video capability in the iPod Nano and a video camcorder in the iPhone 3Gs, Cisco saw a dramatic increase in YouTube video uploads. And as such, they saw the handwriting on the wall. Sure, The Flip has the edge with HD, but to have an all in one solution with the iPhone has forced Cisco, the new owners of Flip Video, to get working on a response. And to that end, they’ve announced that the next model of the phenominally successful Flip Video Pocket Camcorders will come with built in WiFi. But that’s not all.

In addition to being able to transfer video wirelessly, new Flip models will also have double the onboard memory (although they should just bite the bullet and put in an SD card already) a larger screen which will slide up to reveal control buttons, and have the capability to not only upload to YouTube, but also direct Facebook uploads via the wireless connection.

The first model to get the WiFi overhaul will probably be the MinoHD line and rumor has it we’ll see an actual mockup of it at CES this January.

You know, I rather like a feature war between Cisco and Apple brewing. It only means that the consumer will be the ultimate winners. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a new iPhone with HD capability …

Well folks, the day has come. I bought a Playstation 3 and it was a snap decision. This particular phenomenon seems to happen to me with every generation of consoles, it’s not that I’m ever loyal or a fanboy to one side, I just weight out my options initially when new consoles first come out on the market. I buy one console (this time the Xbox 360) a bit after its release, then years later I usually buy the rival in order to complete all my gaming needs. I did the same thing with the Sega Dreamcast and PS2. The bee stings and eventually gets to me though. I end up coming to realize all the great games I have to play exclusively on the PS3 such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Demon’s Souls, I’ve been dying to play both ever since they were released. I always feel weird by the idea of owning two consoles that are essentially the same. In general, I like going to one place for all my gaming needs and overall, the Xbox 360 has provided quite an experience tailored to most of my needs. In the end it’s never enough, as the free out of the box WI-FI and HDMI support is something that made me just take the plunge. It’s that time of year again, the winter is coming and more gaming ensues.

by Kelly Salasin

If I had a dollar for every time somebody asked me,

But how do you blog (or twitter, or facebook…) with dial up?

I could pay off the telephone company and finally get the high speed they’ve been promising to these backroads of Vermont.

But until then, I’d like to share what I’ve learned about remaining sane while relying on the ever-so-slow dial-up connection:

#1 Don’t use dial up~

Save activities that demand high speed internet for your weekly visit to the wired cafe (or the school parking lot where many of my neighbors can be found on their laptops.) If you don’t have your own laptop, visit the library. To maximize your time in the “connected” world, keep a folder (virtual or paper) with all of your wi fi needs as they arise in the moment.

#2 Relish in the convenience of your own home~

Realize that you don’t have to get dressed, comb your hair or buy a really expensive coffee when you work from home. When a page is loading, go shuffle off to your own kitchen in your favorite sweatshirt to make that free cup of jo.

#3 Develop the habit of regular email communication~

If your friends and business folks are accustomed to contacting you by email, they won’t expect to reach you via phone–and thus won’t complain that your line is always busy. (On the upside, you’ll never interrupted by a phone call when you’re working on line.)

#4 Multi-task~

Like I mentioned above, when a page is loading, go do something else: make some lunch, hang up the laundry, put the laundry away, file your nails, clean your desk–anything that will distract you from the frustration of waiting.

#5 Multi-task some more~

Work with several “pages” at once so that while one is loading you can read or write on another, thereby maximizing your productivity if your laundry is already done and someone else made your lunch. Special note: Resist the urge to repeatedly click a page that won’t open. Why? Because then you will be forced to wait for mutiple loadings of the same page without being able to do anything. (Guess how I’ve learned this one, over and over again!)

#6 Surrender to Dial-Up as a Spiritual Practice~

Don’t expect anything else. It is what it is. If you want the conveniences of the world, move back to civilization. Allow the “waiting” to be an exercise of patience. Practice your breathing. Do some eye exercises. Shake out your hands. Be here now while you watch the spinning wheel. Instead of cursing it, allow its rainbow colors to balance your chakras. (If all else fails, time to take a break!)

7. Have fun!

If you’re not having fun, what’s the point? This is your life, and the only one you get. Find another way to meet your internet needs. Share an office space downtown. Make friends with someone who has high speed and sit in her driveway. Be creative! Remember why you live where you do. Take a walk and find that place of gratitude for the “disconnected” life… and breathe… until that day that they FINALLY find a way to connect us all to highspeed.

#8-21? Did I miss anything?

Do tell if you have dial-up sanity measures of your own to share (or let me know which ones of mine work best for you.)

The bold and daring, Kelly Salasin, authors 6 blogs from the backroads of Vermont where her legendary dial-up endurance has found its way into her poetry.

It’s been nearly three full years since we’ve heard a peep from Malata, but the outfit has chosen an opportune time to reemerge into the spotlight. The R108T netbook is one of the convertible variety, boasting a swiveling 10-inch touchscreen (similar to ASUS’ Eee PC T91) and Windows 7 to boot. Internally, things get a lot more boring — there’s a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 1.3 megapixel camera, WiFi, Ethernet, a pair of USB sockets, VGA output and a 3-in-1 card reader. We’re told that the asking price on this one will hover around $439, though there’s no clear indication that it’ll ever head stateside.

Vabbè siamo all’ avanguardia … abbiamo altre priorità perchè siamo nell’ era del digitale … terrestre …

Intanto lo switch off in Lazio va alla grande … o no ?!

The DigitalRise PC-729 tablet offers a refreshing look at the tablet market, since it comes with a 7″ touchscreen display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, all powered by an ARM9 processor. One major drawback would be its 128MB RAM which by today’s standards, doesn’t seem to cut the mustard any more, while its 7″ touchscreen display has a relatively low resolution of just 480 x 272 pixels. Would those apparent setbacks cause you to fork out $355 for the DigitalRise PC-729?
