Tired of waiting for Apple to make its Apple Tablet official? A company called Camangi has already gone ahead and announced a 7-inch touchscreen tablet computer namely the WebStation. Powered by Android 1.5, the tablet features Wi-Fi, GPS, a microSD reader, Gmail, and web browsing. Its battery provides enough juice for up to 5-hours of operation time in a single charge. So it turns out I spent most of the weekend planning the coming week and mildly panicking.  I found out on Friday afternoon that I was lucky enough to score two job interviews this week. Luckily they aren’t on the same day.  They are however, on two consecutive days in places that are a five-hour train ride apart.  And, they are not turn up, do your interview and leave processes.  Both interviews require the better part of each day for interview, tests/ presentations and for one, a buffet lunch with prospective future bosses.  I’m ok with all this and happy to finally being going to interviews again but it did require a little research on my part aided and abetted with research conducted in the Southern Hemisphere. 

It’s all sorted now though and I have trains tickets (some cheap, some not) and accommodation (not too bad considering short notice) because I’ll be away for a few days.  Both sets of accommodation have wi-fi so I might be able to pop up some more pictures soon but even if I don’t, I’ll certainly be taking more for when I get back to the big smoke.

You may have seen in the national and local media that Swindon is to be a pioneer in having a Wi-Fi mesh covering the whole of the local authority area.

The advantages for local businesses and residents are huge as even the time-limited free access available each day will still provide unprecedented access to information, learning and communication. The opportunities it will open up are vast.

Alongside this, I also see the Wi-Fi mesh as part of the Connecting People, Connecting Places programme, which is about bringing all branches of government closer to the people.

For many years the need to save money has meant that the council, the police and other public sector agencies have had fewer buildings, further from where people actually live. No wonder satisfaction with government is so low when it is literally, so remote.

The Wi-Fi mesh will make it easier for staff to come to the community – using temporary drop-in centres in local shops, community centres, libraries and schools. It will become less and less important where a member of staff is based as using the phone or email will be easier for them to respond to people. The mesh will also make it easier for residents to contact their local public services, with cheaper phone calls using voice over internet protocols and good access to email and websites.

Of course, none of this will ever replace face to face meetings, and these will always remain a core part of what we do. But the more services we can deliver electronically, the more money we will have to put into front line services themselves.

On a long six hour bus drive back home from upstate new york, I had the luxury of a WiFi enabled ride. I was in awe when I clicked on my iPod Touch and discovered that I could connect to the internet.

I just didn’t think it would be possible to have WiFi while your moving, especially in the hills and mountains  upstate. I must say I just accepted the terms of agreement for the Coach USA service (no service fee) and I didn’t experience any connection failure or interruptions.  I had full connection the whole way.

Time quickly passed by as I read articles on The New York Times website, checked my email and even sent a few messages on Facebook.

Coach USA and Greyhound are two bus services that I know that offer this technology to its riders. Not all the buses have WiFi capability, it is only certain ones. I have traveled numerous times on ShortLine buses from Coach USA and this was the first time I had the ability to use WiFi. I definitely think this will change the way people travel.

I am still really curious how they make the WiFi on the go work. How do you not lose signal while your in motion?

As a girl on the go, I don’t let something minor like international roaming charges bring my iPhone time down.  But costly phone bills have forced me to make some significant changes.

First and foremost: international phone plans are bulls(*$t.  Go ahead and add it to your plan for the those emergency calls and texts, but don’t rely on them.  Your wallet will curse you if you do.

If you have an iPhone or certain BlackBerrys, you can keep your phone bill on the cheap by enabling this one tiny feature: WiFi.  Using the WiFi network over the cellular will keep your costs down huge when checking your e-mail, Twittering, Facebook-stalking, or blogging from the phone.

This handy app is a must-download for cost-conscious, heavy travelers

For you iPhoners, download the Skype app immediately.  The sound quality on the phone is crisp, the connections are strong, and you can keep your hours-long phone conversations going without hitting your phone bill.  It’s brilliant.  (Note: there is a Skype app for many mobile phone models, so check if your phone is covered).

If you have a SIM-card phone, it may be worth it to get a local SIM card and put it in your phone.  You can keep your data services cheap (based on local market costs), and set up call forwarding to send calls to your new local number.  Also look into renting a phone for the duration of your stay; it may turn out to be cheaper.  Since I come to India quite often, the company gave me an Indian phone with a good data plan.

If you have a BlackBerry, look into getting the Global BlackBerry Services plan.  It provides unlimited e-mail in the States, Canada, and over 60 countries worldwide, as well as a pay-as-you-g0 option for data download amounts.  AT&T and Verizon have different versions, so make sure you check with your provider on the details and costs.

If you simply need a US number while you’re abroad, order a Vonage number and modem while you’re still iln the US and bring it with you to your destination.  We’ve brought three Vonage numbers with us to India for our families’ homes and our office, and they’ve been huge in keeping the costs down.  They also are the reason our phones at home never stop ringing, but I digress…

The ENLWI-N card is fairly nice: FOSS drivers, three antenae, and n draft capabilities. Unfortunatly, it can be a pain to install. After some significant time researching this, I’vefound out a workable solution, assuming you have a flash drive, gcc and binutils, and a basic command line knowledge.
First, you will need a driver, but for Linux, it is source based. There was a driver source package available for download on the manufacturer’s web site, but the (old) copy that I had was broken with errors. An important note is that the card is based on the RT2860 chipset, so you can use that driver, which is what the manufacturer’s driver is. Many links to the RT2860’s manufacturer’s site are broken, I’d guess that they moved to PHP. If you can get one link, go to the root page (delete everything after the .com), navigate to software, then choose Linux. There are alot of drivers there, but you want the RT2860 PCI one. Get that archive.
If you are trying to set up Wi-Fi, you probably don’t have a hard connection, which I didn’t have either. You can simply put the code on a flash drive, or other read-write media for transfer.
The source has a README-ish file, which you need to read. The important part here is the instructions. You’ll need to know where the gcc, ld, and kernel source are on your system. If you can invoke the gcc and ld by those names in a terminal (xterm, Terminal, etc) or shell, you can forget that part. You do need to replace the kernel source directories, on my system, it was /usr/src/linux. The last configuration is about use. That’s up to you, I can’t read your mind. The instructions after that are fairly easy to follow.
So now you have got your driver build, so have fun!

Min politiska syn är att samhällets strukturer skall förändras stegvis mot en effektiv förvaltning och ge möjlighet till valfrihet under enskilt ansvar.

Skattepolitik skall alltid resultera i en effektiv användning. Privata samt offentliga monopol måste avskaffas via skärpt lagstiftning. Jag vill föra en rak politik med fokus på resultat.

Jag brinner för ENERGI, MILJÖ, IT och KULTUR.

KANDIDATUR TILL RIKSDAGEN:

•Nya kärnkraftverk i Karlshamn (3 st på 1500 MW), detta ger många arbetstillfällen samt räddar vår basindustri. Ett av dessa nya kärnkraftverk skall användas till enbart produktion av drivmedel (vätgas).
•En ny infrastruktur i form av ”Energibönder” skall införas för att garantera produktion av drivmedel i form av biogas, etanol och metanol från jord- och skogsbruken.
•Nordiskt samarbete med Island för produktion av mineraler och halvfabrikat genom användning av Islands naturliga energikällor.
•Användning av EU:s jordbruksstöd till rökgasrening av äldre förbrännings- och energianläggningar i Europa, stödet kan därefter avvecklas successivt.
•Arbetslinjen skall utvecklas även på längre sikt.
•LAS måste förändras så att nya arbetstillfällen lättare kan skapas, detta bör slopas helt och hållet för små företag och slopas endast för ungdomar i medelstora företag, däremot bör LAS inte ändras för stora företag.
•Pensionering av 40-talister måste forceras så att ungdomar kan bli lärlingar till den som skall pensioneras, med minimilön och där arbetsgivaravgiften slopas för båda under denna övergångsperiod, för att förhindra en ungdomskatastrof.
•Fildelning och internet skall vara fritt, solidariskt finansierat via bredbandsavgifter, fördelat via intresseorganisationer till upphovsrättsägarna och där viss del av bredbandsavgiften blir till ett permanent kulturstöd inom bild, film, musik och litteratur.
•Skärpt parlamentarism i riksdagen så att demokratin förbättras via nytt röstningsförfarande

KANDIDATUR TILL LANDSTINGET:

•Omvandla landstinget till en rent professionell upphandlingsorganisation, med utförsäljning av alla verksamheter (primärvård samt sjukhus) stegvis.
•Försäljning av verksamheter skall endast ske till marknadsvärde så att skattebetalarna får tillbaks de resurser som tillförts en viss verksamhet.
•Forcerad pensionering av äldre medarbetare så att arbetstillfällen skapas inom landstingets alla verksamheter.
•Utöka vårdvalet för att skapa en jämlikare vård. Skärpta garantier och regler för vård inom vårdvalet.
•Gratis tandvård måste medges i ett högt civiliserat samhälle och skall gälla för alla landstingsanställda.
•Satsa på ett utökat samarbete mellan primärvården och sjukhusen, där oftast specialistvården är starkast. Utnyttja därför läkarresureserna vid våra sjukhus i första hand. En annan organisationsmodell måste utarbetas.
•Öka antalet hembesök via primärvården nu när antalet äldre kommer att öka i framtiden.
•Läkarbristen måste hanteras där studenter utomlands erbjuds att slutföra sin utbildning i Sverige samt utökad satsning på läkarutbildningen så att framtida läkarbrist kan hanteras nu. Även Karlstadsmodellen måste analyseras, att anställa utländska läkare.
•Satsning på spårbunden kollektivtrafik i första hand i regionen därefter bussar och nya alternativa bränslen (el, vätgas, biogas, etanol, metanol) för att förbättra miljön.
•Satsa på ett samarbete mellan andra landsting för inhemsk vaccinproduktion så att vi är oberoende av vaccinproduktion inför nya pandemier.
•Krav på öppna källkodssystem och fri programvara inom alla verksamheter.
•Nytt IT-system för uppföljning av vård pga rotationen av läkare i primärvården, detta är jätteviktigt.

KANDIDATUR TILL KOMMUNEN:

•Avskaffa trängselskatten omedelbart som endast kan anses vara smygsocialisering, därefter stoppa projekt ”Förbifart Stockholm” som leder till ännu mer biltrafik i en redan hårt sargad region. Yrkar här på en klimatsmart lösning byggd på ökad kollektivtrafik med alternativa bränslen och en utbyggnad av kapaciteten i T-banan och pendeltåg.
•Omvandla kommunen till en rent professionell upphandlingsorganisation, med utförsäljning av alla tekniska verksamheter i första hand. Försäljning av verksamheter skall endast ske till marknadsvärde.
•Granskning av bidragsfusk skall utföras endast på lokal nivå direkt i verksamheten.
•Forcerad pensionering av äldre medarbetare så att arbetstillfällen skapas inom stadens alla verksamheter.
•Stödja attraktiva satsningar som sätter Stockholm stad på världskartan.
•Effektiva samförläggningar vid grävning i allmän mark så att vi slipper dyrare grävningar och återläggningar inom staden.
•Energieffektiviseringar inom alla verksamheter. Ökad användning av solfångare på stadens fastigheter, dessa sparar uppvärmningskostnader för stadens fastighetsbestånd.
•Uppmuntra till större användning av kraftvärme och sopförbränning, detta förbättrar miljön där metangas och tungmetaller kan minskas.
•Användning av elbilar i stadens tjänst för att förbättra vår miljö, nu när laddstationerna till elbilar byggs ut.
•IT-effektiviseringar med krav på öppna källkodssystem och fri programvara inom alla verksamheter.
•Utökad möjlighet till fritt internet i alla allmänna ytor i staden.
•Satsa på en central IT-förvaltning som ger stordriftsfördelar och minskar stadens kostnader radikalt.

1000 of kids were feeding, playing and killing them everyday and now they are back! The Tamagotchi!

The new Tamagotchi ID from Bandai actually looks exactly like the old one, with the difference that it is equipped with a 1.44 inch colour screen. You will be able to purchase it from the 23^rd of November on only in Japan for a price of 38 euros. They will be available in six different colours: pink, blue, white, yellow, green and purple. On top of that they’ve got a great feature: You can by new accessories, rare items and mini games over your cell phone and transfer them via infra-red to your Tamagotchi.

I think it’s a fantastic idea, but what cellphone still supports infra-red? What about Bluetooth or WiFi? I think Bandai overslept the trend. Specially in Japan where they have the latest generation of cellphones I really doubt that there are a lot of cellphones left with infra-red.
