On today’s seven hour journey from home (near Manchester) to Prague I had plenty of time to ponder the demise of the flying industry. Plenty of time to bemoan the lack of a hot towel and a sweet to suck at takeoff and landing. A time when the trolly service was more a case of pass the bottle and a warm meal was served on proper china and eaten with a real knife and fork fashioned from Sheffield’s finest. And the ladies doing the serving looked like proper ladies in skirts and stockings rather than the kind of slacks/trousers that you would expect to see your mom in. Hats off to KLM – at least they have retained a traditional uniform. The only problem is that the flight attendants have aged somewhat. They may have the clothes but they lost their wiggle back in the 80s. And, my in-flight meal today consisted of a choice between a poor man’s wagon wheel (those were the days) and packet of 6 Tuc Biscuits. Now I can be partial to a savoury biscuit with a glass of wine and some nice cheese but not with a complimentary coffee or a juice.

Travel by air is just not what it used to be. Czech Airlines decided to cancel my convenient hop from Manchester to Prague so today I was forced to go from Birmingham via Amsterdam. Thanks to Al Qaeda and the resultant enhanced security checks; the budget airlines who have brought international travel within the grasp of the great unwashed and unedificated; and, Japanese tourists, transit through airports has become a nightmare. I nearly missed my connection in Schiphol because of the twenty five minute queue for security. Standing in line for such a long time with my laptop in one hand and a bag of liquids and my belt in another, shuffling along like a man on death row hoping my trousers don’t fall down. Eventually I get to the top of the queue for passport control when an Italian – they are always Italian – gent pushes to the front declaring that he has “a two minutez to catcha a ma plane – do you a mind eef I push in?”. “They might” I respond pointing to the queue of people behind me. He pushes in anyway declaring “I canna a ask a them all”. I hope he missed his plane. I was taken on one side to have my bag searched because I had a “suspicious umbrella”. What could be suspicious about a Brit with an umbrella this time of year?

The flight to Prague was interesting. I sat throughout the flight with my eyes watering from the strong if, no doubt, expensive perfume of the elegant mature Czech lady sat to my left. She was more blinged up than your average rapper or Premiership footballer but with much better legs. I got wafts of her scent whenever she moved. She moved often because she was practising for a role in a hair product advert. The one where you have to flick your hair in a certain way “because your worth it”.

She was one of those skinny, bottoxed, glamorous fifty somethings that do lunch in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge and the like. She had expensively streaked colour to hide her natural blonde tendencies. She had boots with heels that a cat-walk model would break her neck on. Makeup. Lots of it. But not enough to hide the sagginess in her cheeks and neck. She wore a fur wrap which could have been the real thing and had eyebrows so perfectly plucked that they wouldn’t have seemed out of place on Peter Andre.

Travel really is such a drag. It flattened my mood somewhat from the high I achieved last night when Jedward were booted off X-factor. There is a god, or, maybe, Simon Cowell is a supreme being. Shame about Katie Price aka Jordan leaving the jungle though……..

Now I’m stuck in another nondescript hotel room. Don’t get me started……..

Stereoscopy is a way of creating the illusion of depth of field in an image. It is achieved by presenting a slighty different image to each eye. Today we generally see 3-D images through special glasses but in the past the way to achieve this effect was to view two slightly different images through a stereoscope.

At the turn of the century enigmatic photographer T. Enami (1859-1929) captured a number of 3D stereoviews depicting life in Meiji-period Japan. In the past you would have needed a stereoscope to view them but now they have been converted into animated .gifs which uses wiggle stereoscopy to create the illusion of depth of field. This creates amazing 3-D images of Old Japan which can be viewed at

Anna May Perfume-image used with permission I’ve had a love affair with fragrance since I was

Anna May Perfume-image used with permission

I’ve had a love affair with fragrance since I was 15 (when I got my first job so I could actually afford it). It started with bright young scents like Liz Claiborne Realities then as I refined my tastes I turned to scents like Ralph Lauren Romance and Dior J’adore. Then I found Angel by Thierry Mugler. From that point on, I fell in love with deep, slightly masculine scents. I wore Angel for a few years then when Coco Mademoiselle (Chanel) emerged, I wore that. Coco Mademoiselle seemed the perfect embodiement of ’me’ in a scent. Strong, sweet, classic, with a hint of darkness lingering every so subtly in the background. When I ended my 6 year relationship, the scent bothered me. They say that memory and scent are strongly linked (think of the smell of crayons and paste and instantly be transported back to kindergarten). Not that the memories were bad. I just felt I needed a new signature because I had evolved so much. So I gave my full ‘backup’ bottle of Chanel to my best friend and searched for a new scent that was dark and feminine. That’s when I found Midnight Poison. Already, the scent conjures up memories of Las Vegas, adventure, and the initial courting of my soul mate and I. It’s a dark scent that Sephora describes as such:

From a mysterious, sensual fragrance, a new Cinderella is born – the mystery begins when the clock strikes twelve. In a fairytale that only Dior could imagine, this intense new fragrance epitomizes the magical transformation that only a Dior gown can create. Cinderella’s metamorphosis as she dons her couture is like the blossoming of the mysterious black rose. The deep blues of the bottle recall not only past Poison bottles, but the sweep of a dramatic ball gown as well. At the stroke of midnight Dior’s Cinderella takes flight, leaving only the exquisite trace of her perfume lingering in her wake.

Maya Perfume Oil--Image used with persmission

I love it, but I am also keeping my eye (or nose!) out for other deep and dark yet feminine fragrances. Today, while browsing Etsy.com for natural skin care products I ran across the most unusual and delicious perfumer. I was instantly captivated by her passion for her craft. And her selection seems to cover all of general genres of the perfume catalogue. I am considering ordering samples of most of her offerings. The idea of a handcrafted fragrance excites me. I love supporting other businesses run by women. The company is called Wiggle Perfume. Here is the blurb from their shop:

A word about the wiggle: The wiggle is about pushing back against the notion that all our parts are meant to be hard and flat and angular. It’s about realizing how much power there is to be found in the curvy jiggly bits. It’s about spending less time in the gym and more time in the bedroom. It’s about relaxing and letting the good outweigh the bad. Rock what ya got! (It is not, however, about using those bits to get out of speeding tickets. At least not too often, let’s don’t ruin it for the rest of the girls, eh?) Mae West knew about the wiggle, Marilyn understood…a little wiggle makes the world go ’round.

Delicious!

Standouts for me are: Anjali-a spicy incense-y fragrance (sounds divine)

Little 5- intense opium spice with oriental rose, deep and dark

Black no.1-which she describes as “a mix of blackberry, narcissus, violet, patchouly, and clove. There’s also a little hint of rain floating around in there, ’cause it wouldn’t be the same without some moody weather. “

and Maya-cocoa, orchid and plumeria with a kick of black pepper. OH!

I’m tempted to get samples of them all to experience the true artistry and passion that I’ve grown to admire in people who follow their creative passions.

Have any of you tried Wiggle Perfume? Are there any other handcrafters of perfume you really think shine? I see a new addiction on the horizon, indie perfume!

I am in no way affiliated with Wiggle Perfume, Dior, Chanel, Liz Claiborne, Thierry Mugler or Ralph Lauren. This is just a personal post doting on the emotional and personal world of fragrance and should be taken as entertainment or discarded as sheer babble.

This one had a very drastic angle which was making it too busy for an animation. I put some effects over it and, though it isn’t as genuine, I thought the end result was a big improvement over the raw animation.

The French planned for the statue to be completed and presented to the United States on July 4, 1876, but a late start and subsequent delays prevented it. However, by that time the right arm and torch were completed. This part of the statue was displayed at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, where visitors were charged 50 cents to climb the ladder to the balcony. The money raised this way was used to start funding the pedestal. [source: wiki]

“Halfords”… okay, stop sniggering at the back there! We (cyclists) can be such brand snobs at times, and often it means we can lose out. Just a few years ago Halfords were a car accessories dealer who carried a few imported bikes to boost sales around Christmas. Yes, they were cheap steel things with very little to commend them and the other items they sold were pure budgets lines.

Today they are carving a very nice niche for themselves with their Bikehut offering. I admit to shopping there quite regularly now: they carry some good branded clothing and accessories, and their own-brand stuff is far from cheap and nasty. I recently bought a crank puller and some cable cutters. These are sturdy well engineered items that stand up well in a value comparison with Park.

They will never match the range of quality offering of the specialist cycle shop who doesn’t have to make the same compromises, and online etailers like Wiggle and Chainreaction can match their range of the specialist and budget pricing. But if you are sniffy about buying from Halfords you may miss a lot of value – and a chance to drool at the amazing Boardman bikes at amazing prices.
