An experiment in using the Wii to spray on virtual graffiti, hence the WiiSpray. Nice idea and great exploration of the use of this kind of interaction with the projector.

It’s still an experiment, but may provide an alternative to trains, buses and seats hopefully.

And the techie bit: It uses a Wii but the actually graphics are built using Adobe Flash. Seems flash is becoming a great tool for experimenting with ideas and interfaces.

Wow, take a nintendo Wii controller, slap on a bitchin spray can shell, and design some software that emulates spray paint, along with tips, drips, and the ability to change colors in a heartbeat, and you have a bad ass concept! I can only imagine the possibilities they have with this, it takes gaming and the art form to a whole other level! Some German students created this concept and I would believe the demand for something like this would be overwhelming. I hope it makes it to the shelf! I want it! I want it now!

Desde que se anunció por primera vez que la futura consola de Nintendo tendría detección de movimientos como nunca antes se había hecho, las mentes pensantes empezaron a delirar. Luego, con la aparición del WiiMote, muchos vieron su sueño hecho realidad y empezaron a explorar caminos que hasta ahora les estaban prohibidos.

Uno de esos caminos nos lleva hasta lo que ha hecho Martin Lihs, estudiante de arte en la Universidad Bauhaus (sí, como la célebre escuela de artes en la república de Weimar y que se cargaron los nazis) y que fusiona la tecnología de Nintendo con el arte grafitero, llega ‘WiiSpray’

No es que podamos convertirnos en un Baskiat del tres al cuarto, pero hay que reconocer que el sistema de pintar con el mando de Wii y utilizarlo al estilo Photoshop, eso sí sobre un lienzo digital, tiene su rollo.

Aunque lo mejor, sin duda, es el uso de máscaras recortadas para conseguir las formas deseadas. El resultado es muy espectacular y merece la pena, lástima que necesitar un soporte especial no lo haga demasiado comercializable, aunque no quiero ni imaginarme lo que algunos de nosotros seriamos capaces de hacer con un sistema así.

The future looks promising with technology like this. The ability to manipulate digital media gets easier every day. Check out what type of impact things like this might have on advertising as well; In Japan they are already taking advantage of interactive billboards by allowing the crowd passing by to use their cell phones to compete in a game against other people.

Combining the ability to “paint” on media or play/participate in media/ads may create a whole new opportunity for the consumer to really have a say in what type of products or services are promoted and produced for them.

We’re not really ‘gadgeteers’ here in Irishstreetart.com but when Jason in Galway brought this little contraption to our attention we felt we had to share it with you.

“When we first caught a whiff of the virtual aerosol action promised by Martin Lihs’ thesis at Bauhaus University, dubbed WiiSpray, we were intrigued, but we never figured the end product would be this impressive. Lihs has since posted up a short teaser trailer showing the wall in action, controlled by a modified Wiimote controller, with results that should make even the most law-abiding artist smile. The video below shows an extensive color picker tool, interactive stencils, and what looks to be a perfectly accurate spray pattern — and it should be, as the whole is getup is sponsored by Montana Cans. We’re not sure what’s next for this technology, but hopefully Lihs and his creation will be bombing a more public location soon.”
