In a sit down interview with Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed that from the very beginning Mario was destined to be in every video game he was put in charge of. The funny thing is Miyamoto was planning to name Mario, Mr. Video… I’m so glad he changed his mind

Everyone’s favourite lawyer-em-up series Phoenix Wright is heading to Wiiware courtesy of Capc

Everyone’s favourite lawyer-em-up series Phoenix Wright is heading to Wiiware courtesy of Capcom. If you haven’t played these games, they are a mix of point and click puzzle solving and dialogue navigation, with a smattering of great humour thrown in for good measure. One case involves rookie lawyer Phoenix cross-examining a parrot for example. *ahem*

Three individual titles are set to hit Wiiware in Spring 2010, starting with the superb Ace Attorney, which sees Wright defending his bumbling oaf of a best mate Larry Butz while becoming entangled in a much deeper murder case. Justice for All sees Wright squaring off against whip-wielding lawyer Franziska von Karma, daughter of big baddie Manfred von Karma. Finally Trials and Tribulations pits you against the ruthless Godot, the meanest mofo this side of the jury stand.

While UK and Europe gamers first got to grips with the series in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on DS, the series actually started in Japan as a series on the Gameboy Advance. These Wiiware titles are essentially ports of the GBA originals blown up to fit your TV with all the pixelation and grainyness intact. It’s a tad lazy, but the games are such good fun that it doesn’t really matter.

See what I mean?

and again:

Ok, so I’m a strong believer that games don’t have to look good to be amazing and I wish more people could understand this, but with a much slicker DS version already available, surely Capcom could have seen fit to release this on Wiiware instead?

Still, if you can overlook the visuals, this will be a must-have collection for fans of point and click games everywhere when it launches on Wiiware next year.

Join myself and Chris Karpyszyn as we discuss the legitimacy of the Wii’s popularity and what Nintendo has done well and done not so well to have crowned it’s console the king of this generation. The concept of innovation over graphics is the major characteristic of the Wii but did it also sacrifice gameplay as well? We discuss that and other Wii topics like the Virtual Console/WiiWare service and whether it has been a boon to classic gaming or a lame duck attempt at competing with the Xbox Live Marketplace and if Nintendo can stay ahead of their competitors ambitious plans to add motion control to their consoles.

This podcast was recorded a couple of weeks ago and due to other business that I had to attend to and the fact that it took me quite a while to edit this thing together (it was really late when we originally recorded this and it sounded like we should have gone to bed instead of recording), it is only being released now. It must be noted that while listening to us complain about the lack of major Nintendo first-party titles on the Wii, Excitebike World Rally and Pokemon Rumble had not been announced nor had the demo service which just went live this past Monday.

We’ll be recording our fourth Roundtable this Sunday (the third one is recorded but it will take me some time to edit it). We’ll be talking about the Xbox 360 and it’s notorious Red Ring of Death with the major question being: why hasn’t the Red Ring of Death killed the Xbox 360? If you have any questions or comments you want to send for us to discuss during the recording, send the messages to madnessbrewing@gmail.com

PlayStation Network does not always have demos for downloadable games like Xbox Live Arcade does. Mo

PlayStation Network does not always have demos for downloadable games like Xbox Live Arcade does. Most PlayStation games do have demos though, even if the game is going to arrive two or three weeks later. WiiWare is a complete gamble on having demos. There is most often no demo for a WiiWare game which makes is hard to find coverage. This potentially keeps some WiiWare games from people purchased as people do not know what to expect. However, this problem may no longer be a problem. Nintendo starting releasing WiiWare demos today.

At the time, only five WiiWare demos are out even though the games they are for have already been released. The five games are Bit.Trip Beat, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Dark Lord, NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits, World of Goo and Pokemon Rumble. These are all good decisions by Nintendo because all five of these titles are quality games that have been ignored. As of right now, it has not been made clear whether or not demos are going to become a part of Nintendo’s policy. If these demos receive a lot of attention, then I am sure that Nintendo will continue releasing WiiWare demos.

Frogger first burst onto the gaming scene in arcades way back in 1981. The classic original is still

Frogger first burst onto the gaming scene in arcades way back in 1981. The classic original is still a nostalgic favorite for many, and has enjoyed numerous lives outside of the arcade room. But since 1997, there’ve been no shortages of Frogger sequels for your computer or console. Many of these games bearing the Frogger name have been downright horrible (Frogger 3D, I’m looking at you).

Well series fans, your favorite street crossing amphibian is back again in Konami’s Frogger Returns, and this time it’s a surprisingly fun game.

Hit the jump for my review of the game for the Nintendo Wii.

Frogger Returns (Wii)
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action, Arcade
Released: November 9, 2009
ESRB Rating: E
Price: 500 Wii Points ($5)

Frogger Returns is a $5 dollar download available in the Wii Shop Channel, and if you’re storing it on your Wii system memory, it’ll take up 203 blocks. Is it worth $5 and 203 blocks of space? Yes, yes it is.

Frogger Returns doesn’t rock the boat too much from the gameplay of the original. The goal is still the same, take the frog and avoid all the obstacles and time your jumps, to try and get to the lily pad, or this case your holding cell. It’s a very simple concept; if you’ve played Frogger then you will definitely know exactly how to play this sequel.

Let’s jump right into our 4 Categories of Judgment, starting with graphics.

Graphics:

The graphics of Frogger Returns aren’t going to leave you breathless, but this is a five dollar download, so you probably aren’t expecting Super Mario Galaxy graphics to begin with. If you can still play the original game, then you’ll definitely have no complaints in the graphics department. For what the game is, the graphics are good enough.

Yes, the cars and enemies, they all repeat themselves, there really is no variety… but it’s a Frogger game, that’s the way it should be.

The levels look good, the obstacles all look decent enough. The only thing that really could’ve been designed to look a little better is Frogger himself. And the main menu, which is pretty terrible, but has nothing to do with gameplay.

Controls:

When you download this game, it says it’s compatible with both the Wiimote and with the Classic Controller. Having spent a decent amount of time with it, I couldn’t figure out anyway to switch to the classic controller to actually get it working. I’m not saying they lied about it, but damn if I could figure out how to do it. And that’s a bummer, because I really wanted to use the classic controller with this, because of how the Wiimote is set up.

The only buttons this game requires is the D-pad, to move in four directions. But the way they have it set up, you have to point the Wiimote at the TV, where being able to turn it sideways should have at least been a choice. Moving the frog around, I felt like I was changing channels.

But the controls are definitely simple; all you have to do is watch your frog and press Up, Down, Left, Right to navigate your way through the levels without dying.

It’s so easy, a caveman could do it.

Single Player Modes:

Frogger Returns is packing four single player modes, but they’re all the exact same thing, just different in how you approach it.

“Arcade” is what everyone will know; you have a few lives and a time limit to avoid all the obstacles and reach the other side, all the while seeing how high you can get your score up too. This is classic Frogger through and through.

“Time Trail” is where you forgo playing for high scores, and instead see how fast you can complete the mission and stages. Instead of counting down, the ticker is counting up. So don’t be a slow ass and take your time, this mode is all about the speed. This mode also gives you the option of playing through any of the games four different levels. So if you get stuck on the first or second “world” in Arcade, you can play the other ones here.

“Score Attack” allows you to play any of the levels, and it plays like Arcade; you have a time limit and lives, but you get rewarded bonus points for time remaining and lives you have. The object here is, get through the stage and have the highest score.

All three of those modes have separate leaderboards.

The final single player mode is “Free Play”. In Free Play, you have no time limit and no lives. You can get killed as many times as you like, and take as much time as you need. There’s also no scoring for this mode. So just take your frog and hop around to your hearts content. This isn’t a competitive mode, so I assume it’s there for those casual gamers you hear so much about in regards to the Wii.

Multiplayer Modes:

Frogger Returns supports up-to-two players locally across four gaming modes. There is no online support for this game, which is kind of missed opportunity because a game like this could have benefited from simple online leaderboards. But it is only five dollars, so you get what you pay for, so the lack of online is neither a big deal or unexpected.

Multiplayer works more like the traditional arcade game in appearance, as the camera zooms out to show the whole multiplayer stage to accommodate for both players, top down style. Like the single player modes, all the modes are a variation of the other.

Race to see who can occupy three of the five holding cells in one mode; another is the same concept only you have a five minute time limit and you can steal holding cells, so the object is to hold the most when time expires (WWE Scramble match FTW!) The other two modes are variations of eating flies to collect points and get to the holding cell to “bank” those points, if you die before you make it to a holding cell, the points you’ve collected on the journey to the cell go away.

Multiplayer isn’t much, definitely nothing over the single player experience, but it is always nice to be able to play a game with someone else, so the modes are all welcome additions.

Final Thoughts:

Compared to other games bearing the Frogger name, this one is pretty good. For $5, this one is a fun little no brainer, especially if you enjoyed the original Frogger. The price is really spot on, $8 would have been pushing it and $10 would have definitely been too much.

The single player mode has a few power-up type things, you can make obstacles move backwards (which can kill you if you trigger it at the wrong time). My favorite is what I like to call “the cheat bubble”. With this bubble, you’re invincible for a short amount of time; you can run through cars, snakes, rats, through the water, etc. With it on, you should be able to easily reach the end of the mission before it runs out, provided you know how to properly navigate and don’t waste time running into walls.

If you have a Wii, definitely shill out the 500 Wii Points and download this game, if you enjoy Frogger. It’s a fun game, not a classic like the original and not something that will keep you playing for months, but it is worth a buy at its cheap price.

The game is suppose to be coming to Playstation Network as a download for the PS3 sometime this Winter, so you PS3 players will get a chance to experience it as well.

Purchase Suggestion: “Recommended”

Score: 3 — Average

There’s been constant rumours bubbling that we’ll soon be getting a HD Wii but Nintendo of America boss, Reggie- Fils Aime, spoke with Kotaku saying they need more of a reason to include HD in the Wii:

“The fundamental issue in the logic flow is that… gosh, it’s such an opportunity to take HD capability and link it with the Wii. And what we have said, repeatedly, is that that’s not the way we at Nintendo do things. The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it’s because there are some fundamental things the console cannot do.”

Call me a cynic but the fundamental things a Wii cannot do is offer a satisfactory online experience or sufficient space for the multiple channels and downloadable games. Adding HD capabilities can only compliment these short comings. It’s a little odd that Nintendo are dead against upgrading the Wii right now since we’re getting a third iteration of the DS early next year.

It’s been a year in the making, but it’s finally happened. The WiiWare Channel now has demos available for a small selection of titles and I’m going to take a look at one to see how they work and if they are going to be worthwhile addition to the service.

When you first boot up the WiiWare Channel there is a small selection of the demos available on the splash screen. You can then move onto the WiiWare section of the site where the demos are mixed in with the regular titles. They are seperate from their proper release. Right now they’re easy to find because they’re the first things on the list, but I can see very quickly how they might get lost in the shuffle and a reorganization of the Shop Channel might be in order very soon. Downloading the demos, though is just as easy as clicking on the title you want and hitting the download button. It doesn’t cost you anything so why not try.

The demos themselves are smaller file sizes than the proper title so it’s very obvious this is something that the developers have to put together and it may not be something that will be universal to the service. You can choose to download them to your hard drive or an SD card just like the regular downloads and they appear that they will download very quickly.

One interesting thing to note is that when you download them you get a message that says after you play the demo you’ll be brought back to the Wii Shop Channel where you’ll have the option to then purchase the title. You can’t opt out of this. Everytime you play a demo you’ll be brought back to the Shop. That might be something that gets very annoying, very quickly.

All in all though the service looks like it might be a help to anyone that might be interested in trying out some of these titles before you buy and I’ve downloaded the demo to the one game I haven’t tried, Pokemon Rumble and I’ll be bringing you a quick look at that tomorrow. So stay tuned.

I was looking for something to contrast the rather high profile game I’ve been playing (you all know the one), so decided to give Pokemon Rumble a try. It’s the latest in a long line of Pokemon spin-offs but comes with most of the key features that make the original games so addictive. With such praise however comes the cynicism that Pokemon Rumble also feels like the bare minimum of what’s needed for a new game. This does give it a comfortable familiarity but one that’s becoming a bit too familiar. Read on for the full write up.

Pokemon Rumble starts with a brief introduction of the simplistic concept – Play as a clockwork Pokemon that has to fight other clockwork Pokemon with the aim of catching as many as possible that are strong enough to fight in the Battle Royale. Easy. Fighting is real-time rather than turn-based and battles can contain any number of opponents at one time. Yet it still allows the kind of tactics that every good Poke-trainer prides themselves with; Pokemon with the ability of Fire attacks do greater damage to those based on Ice etc. I was given a wind-up Rattata with it’s basic attack to begin with and managed to get into the Battle Royale arena where my butt was severely kicked. Dropping into a kind of hub world, my Rattata was no longer able to partake in the mass carnage but I could enter one of six worlds in order to better my Rattata and ‘befriend’ more Pokemon. If I want to get back in to the Battle Royale I needed to have a level of 100 or more – something that didn’t take too long once I powered through these worlds and their end of level boss. Collecting more Pokemon involves beating them down until they’re knocked out, then walking over their confused body. Not too dissimilar to the traditional method of a Pokeball.

Each world may differ in their overall appearance but only very slightly in terms of layout. Paths are very linear but of course, acquiring Pokemon is the underlying reason for the game so as long as going from A to B contains enough of them to fight and collect, I’m not sure if the core audience would be bothered by the linearity. On the subject of appearance, Pokemon Rumble does have it’s redeeming features like the suitable cell-shaded graphics and colourful environments but really isn’t all that impressive. Yes it looks very nice and one of the better looking WiiWare titles but that’s not a difficult task and characters can look ugly due to their simplicity. It also some game-chugging frame rate issues when lots of Pokemon are on screen at once or lighting effects take place. I’m unsure as to whether it’s due to the Wii’s power or the developer’s struggle to get the game small enough to be downloadable. Either way it’s not very welcome in this era of video games. What is clever is how the Ambrella have managed to make an new Pokemon experience that can still provoke our addiction of collecting. Levels can be revisited to catch anyone that was missed during the first play and those that are caught can be upgraded with a maximum of two different attacks – something that, apart from gathering Pokemon, saves the game from becoming utterly boring. With such linear levels and repetitive combat, the fact that I had a choice of using a Pokemon with a long range, short range or even dizzying or sleep inducing attack felt like a godsend! It also makes each players experience unique and invites the favoured discussion of ‘which Pokemon is best’. Especially when playing the game with friends as both world exploration and the Battle Royale can be played either on your own or as a multiplayer.

Not having played the whole game I’m undecided as to whether Pokemon Rumble is worth the 1500 Wii Points (around £10) price tag. It does play to our desires of collecting these obscure virtual beasts but also feels like Ambrella haven’t exactly been very original with the title. Levels are very repetitive although the Battle Royale, once entered, helps relieve the boredom slightly. I’m keen to invest more time and accumulate more Pokemon but wonder how much longer my interest will last. Since the graphics and indeed franchise is more aimed at a younger market and hardcore enthusiasts, I’d imagine it’s able to tick enough boxes for those players to get their moneys worth.

Nintendo has finally — emphasis on the finally — made some demos available for a select

Nintendo has finally — emphasis on the finally — made some demos available for a select few WiiWare games. This is great news. It should have happened three years ago, but it’s still great to see the big N coming to terms with the fact that this is 2009, and these days, demos are standard. There’s only five WiiWare games with demos available:

BIT.TRIP BEAT

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

World of Goo

Pokemon Rumble

I’ve already got two of those games (BIT.TRIP BEAT and World of Goo). I tried out the demo for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord last night and came away impressed. Not just by the game itself, which the demo has convinced me I need to purchase, but also by how well the demo was crafted. You get to play just enough to learn what’s going on and get interested in what the game has to offer before it cuts you off gently. A couple of characters in the game plead with you to purchase the full title before the game immediately drop-kicks you back to the Wii Shop channel page for the game where you can make the purchase. It’s handled well, which, I’ll be honest with you, surprised me coming from Nintendo.

But really, this should only be the first step. If this is somehow the end goal for Nintendo, then they have once again missed the point completely. From here, the next logical steps toward progress should be obvious to anyone.

WiiWare demos for ALL WiiWare games

This is a must. It can’t be something they only put together for high-profile games or only titles for which they expect to have exceptional sales. Every single WiiWare title should have a demo available. It’s much more difficult to drop $10 to $15 on a downloadable title than it is to drop $40 to $50 on a retail Wii game because you’ve lost any and all secondary market resale value. So before I plunk down the cash that I will never get back, I need to make sure I’m putting my money into something I will absolutely enjoy. To guarantee that, I need a demo.

It’s already proven successful. I’m definitely planning to purchase My Life as a Darklord now, where before I was skeptical that it was something I would enjoy. But the game is a charming, challenging, and well-crafted combination of tower defense game and SimTower, and it deserves my money. I wouldn’t have known that without a demo. So, get cracking Nintendo. I can’t be alone in thinking this can only be a good thing.

Demos of upcoming Wii retail games

Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes. Maybe not every single Wii game needs to have a demo, but we’ve encountered so many unbelievably hokey, half-baked concepts and seriously poorly-designed titles that we’re getting to the point where people just default to not being interested in a new game because they’re scared it’s going to turn out to be nothing more than utter crap. This is fact. The default setting for Wii gamers is that new games are not likely to be enjoyable, so why bother. Demos will allow us to make more informed decisions on what is going to entertain us. This is also fact.

Yes, it’s true, demos will make it so that some games get the shaft. This is done on purpose. The sooner we can sort the wheat from the chaff, the sooner we can get to a more streamlined gaming experience that focuses on having fun and not complaining about poor game design. The lesson here should be for all developers and publishers. You shouldn’t get the news that your game is a disaster from poor sales. Poor sales could be an indicator of many problems from negligent marketing to supply issues. But if you have a demo available, and your game still performs poorly, you can rest assured that poor sales mean your game simply sucks. The lesson there is to make better games.

Nintendo may be three years too late getting on the demo train, and they’re starting off with a severely anemic selection, but they’re here. They’ve arrived at the party, and they’re just starting to find their dance groove. Maybe they will dance really badly and get laughed out of the cool kids’ party. Or maybe they will be a hit. We have to see where they go from here, and whether or not the cool kids invite them to the next party.

Okay, I should really refrain from attempting metaphorical narratives.

In a stedfast Nintendo tradition, Pokemon Rumble is coming to WiiWare tomorrow in Europe with very little promotion from Ninty themselves. No matter, that’s what I’m here for!…well, Go Nintendo first… The price will be a premium 1500 Wii Points although RawmeatCowboy believes the price may drop to 1200 without warning so we may be rewarded for our patience here. Pokemon Rumble is a little different from the usual adventure as we’ll take control of a clockwork Pokemon, battling other clockwork poke-creations in real-times fights. The element of finding and capturing more of said beasties remains the same however. After some time of level progression, the Battle Royale feature is unlocked giving us the option of playing a horde-like arena solo or with a friend. Wave upon wave of other Pokemons will enter the arena leading to ‘legendary Pokemon’. If that didn’t help wet your appetite then maybe the trailer above will!

Warning screens indicate that you can’t save any progress, and that the demos may “not support every feature of the full version.” The demos are supposed to only be available for a limited time, but we’ll take advantage of the opportunity to bring you our first demo review of a Wii game!

SAN MATEO, Calif. — November 18, 2009 — Capcom® Entertainment, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that three classic Ace Attorney® games are scheduled for digital release on Nintendo’s WiiWare next year beginning with the one that started it all, Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney® followed by Phoenix Wright™ Ace Attorney®: JUSTICE FOR ALL, and Phoenix Wright™ Ace Attorney®: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS. Gamers can expect the deliberations to begin January 2010. These games will cost 1,000 Wii Points, $10.00 USD.

Ace Attorney’s massive popularity and appeal in Japan has caught on in the West and the franchise has now sold well over 3.7 million units worldwide. For the first time ever, this beloved handheld series is making an appearance on a home console, giving gamers access to three of the classic Ace Attorney adventures from the comfort of their own living rooms. Fans and newcomers alike will have a chance to star as the most popular defense attorney in videogames, Phoenix Wright – a man driven by principles and his ability to separate fact from dubious fiction. Each game in the series presents twisting storylines and intriguing gameplay with comical anime stylings. Players will collect evidence, weed through inconsistent testimonies and overcome corrupt agendas to ensure that justice prevails! Present evidence with the wave of the Wii remote or press suspicious testimonies by wiggling it. These games can be played via single-player and has multiple save slots.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Episode 1 through 4) is the first release hitting in January. The story kicks off with Phoenix Wright defending his childhood friend Larry Butz from a murder charge. But this is only the beginning drama for the tenacious legal eagle as Wright faces unexpected tragedies that will test the limits of his incredible deductive prowess. In May, owners of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will be able to download the bonus episode that appeared in the original Nintendo DS™ version of the game. It will cost 100 Wii Points.

This news is only for Japan at the moment, but considering the franchise has been fairly successful

This news is only for Japan at the moment, but considering the franchise has been fairly successful here there’s a good chance we’ll see it as well. The following info comes from Famitsu courtesy of Joystiq:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will be available in Japan on December 15 for 900 Wii Points, with the two Phoenix Wright sequels following on January 26 and February 23 for 1200 Wii Points each. The original case added to the DS version of the first Ace Attorney will be out on March 16 for 300 Points.

I’ve not had much experience with the series personally. I tried out the little flash demo of Apollo Justice that was released last week, but I would give Phoenix Wright a try for $9.
