“A wiki is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked webpages via a web browser.  Wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems.”

A wiki is a website that you can set up or contribute to.  A wiki allows you and other users to add to, comment, and collaborate on the wiki website.  The most widely known wiki is Wikipedia.  Wikipedia is a website where you can search any subject or topic and you will find information about the subject topic.  The information on Wikipedia however, is written by Wikipedia members.  You could have a highly qualified Dr. writing about the subject of butterfly migration or you could have a hippie talking about what they saw last week in their garden. 

There are many ways you can use Wiki’s in your classroom.  If you have a class project such as a science project, you can create a Wiki website for the project.  This would enable you and your students (once they are members) to communicate via the website about the project.  Other ways you can use a wiki in the classroom is student portfolios or literature circles.  Students can post information and discuss the book they are reading or the writing they have just completed for an English essay.

Once you get the hang of a wiki, they are wonderful tools in the classroom.

The company reported a quarterly profit after one-time items that beat Wall Street expectations on the strength of its beef and pork businesses, but investors focused on the performance of its poultry operations, which came in well below that of rivals like Pilgrim’s Pride.

Donnie Smith, a veteran at the company who became chief executive last week, said in a conference call that the chicken business should improve in 2010, but added that the company would need to increase volume and do a better job of managing inventory.

“It’s important to remember that we significantly reduced inventory in 2009, so to keep up with current domestic demand, we’ll have to produce this year what we took out of inventory last year,” Mr. Smith said. “We’ll be doing what we should be doing, which is selling what we produce and not confusing the freezer with the customer.”

Earlier on Monday, Pilgrim’s Pride reported a quarterly profit, reversing a year-earlier loss.

Tyson reported a net loss of $455 million, or $1.22 a share, for its fiscal fourth quarter, ended on Oct. 3, compared with a year-earlier profit of $48 million, or 13 cents a share.

Excluding a good-will impairment charge for its beef business, Tyson earned 28 cents a share, beating the analysts’ average estimate of 26 cents, according to Thomson Reuters.

Revenue at Tyson rose slightly, to $7.21 billion from $7.20 billion. Analysts on average were expecting $6.88 billion.

Operating margins at the chicken segment came in at 1.2 percent, much below analysts’ forecasts.

Tyson expects the strength in its pork and beef businesses to continue in its new fiscal year and said that it saw a chance for the economy to improve in the last half of the year.

Tyson’s stock fell 19 cents, to $12.88.

I’ve been one of the lucky people chosen to play Grand Fantasia for Aeria Games, in Closed Beta.

Now, while most people don’t know who I am (I’m on the Alice Server, Channel 4), I’m easily identifiable by the person who shouts that they’re recruiting people who can type and are friendly to the Loki guild.

It appears the average age of the gamers is about 17. There are 4chan references abound. While the player base is relatively helpful (if you ask something over world chat for help, you’ll usually get a response), they’re also immensely childish and would sooner make “Yo Momma” jokes than cater to intellectual conversation.

The game’s graphics are up to par, with Chocobo-like creatures running around to-and-fro. Unfortunately, character customization is at a minimum. I’m afraid Aeria Games is going to pull a Fiesta Online and make customizing your character’s face and hair cost real money.

For now, though, the game is loaded with quests to keep you busy and an interesting plot that has a lot of potential (though isn’t completely explored) in order to keep you hooked.

The sprite concept is a lot like a pet system, except these pets are actually somewhat useful. They don’t help in combat, but they can get materials for you so that you can make various items.

Would I recommend this game to a friend? Most likely yes. Would I encourage them to buy things using Aeria Points? This game hasn’t shown me yet that buying anything is worthwhile, aside from the experience boost.

ESRI baru saja me-launching GIS wiki di http://wiki.gis.com.  Situs ini belum dipublikasikan secara resmi dan baru diinfokan oleh Mike Hogan yang bekerja di ESRI lewat twitter @mikehogan. Situs utamnya GIS.com bahkan tidak mengindikasikan adanya situs wiki ini.  Halaman statistik mengindikasikan ada lebih dari 1,800 halaman.

Namun demikian apabila melakukan pencarian ke twitter, sebenarnya isu ini telah cukup beredar  untuk mendapatkan masukan dari project ini.

Jadi teringat rencana RSGISForum untuk membuat GIS Wiki dalam bahasa Indonesia yang belum kesampaian juga. Ada yang mau bantu pengelolaannya?

While the wiki doesn’t necessarily present the archives as being especially innovative, the MediaWiki itself is worth considering as a point of discussion. Originally for use on Wikipedia, MW is open-source PHP (briefly, Web-development scripting language) software. Wikia.com has utilized the software, via a free content license, to develop a wiki site to be used by “millions of passionate fans.” While the Jim Henson Company Archive entry seems to be accurate and informed, the banner ads surrounding the wiki entry are off-putting. Is it right to profit from open-source software? If it is, by how much? Non-profits developing software utilized by for-profit companies?

Her er en ny applikation som både fungerer på Google Android og nu senest også på Iphone. De applikationer der hidtil har set lovende ud, har oftest kun fungeret under Iphone. Her er en løsning til flere platforme.

Hvordan fungerer det så?
Telefonen kender selvfølgelig din egen position vha. den indbyggede gps-enhed. Den sammenholder din position med alle optegnelser i en wiki. I www.wikitude.me er alle artikler geotagget, altså tilføjet en geografisk position. Når du holder din telefon op og drejer 360 rundt om dig selv, kan telefonen vha. af det indbyggede kompas se hvad vej du peger telef0nen. Udfra disse to oplysninger – din position og det verdenshjørne du nu vender imod - kan den let give dig afstanden til et POI/en wikiartikel i den retning du kigger lige nu. Dette punkt kan ligge på den anden side af gaden eller det kan være 117 km. væk.

I dette tænkte eksempel vil du, når du står på Torvet i Køge og kigger rundt, i princippet kunne få informationer om alle husene der omkranser Torvet. Det er selvfølgelig forudsat at der er nogle der har lagt informationerne ind i systemet. I skrivende stund ligger der to tyske tekster om Køge, samt een (min) om Køge Byhistoriske Arkiv.

Ulempen – for sådan een er der jo altid – er, at der kun kan være 255 tegn i brødteksten om hvert POI. Og så kommer man til at slås om opmærksomhed med andre POI i nærheden. Brugeren vil både kunne se mere om de historiske guldkorn og de lokale cafeer, benzinstationer osv. – hvis de har lagt informationer ind. Men lige nu er der som sagt ikke trængsel om POIs i Køge.

Alt i alt er det bestemt værd at bruge lidt tid på at fifle med dette nye legetøj. Så nu mangler du (jeg) kun en Iphone, men heldigvis er julen jo lige om hjørnet!

Defend an openess that does not exist?

A wiki is a web site everybody (or anyone) can edit, they say. But how “wiki” is Wikipedia nowadays? Ed Chi has taught us that 20 % of a newbie’s edits are reverted, in comparison to 2 % of the edits of an experienced Wikipedian. It became difficult to join the community which is often repelling new people by unnecessarily harsh comments.

In the past, the media complained that “anyone” can put “anything” into Wikipedia; today, after quality requirements have become more severe, they complain that too many articles are deleted. (Especially the German media have jumped on that train.) This is the result of the evolution of Wikipedia from a “project to create an encyclopedia” into an encyclopedia that, essentially, already exists and has to be maintained.

A lot of the problems of Wikipedia could be solved by opening only two doors to content alteration:
A) Reporting: If a reader finds something wrong in an article he can push a button and report that; Wikipedians will deal with the proposal similar to the questions nowadays sent to the “support team”. Polish Wikipedia already has a Reporting system. Of course, why compel someone to learn editing and Wiki syntax and stuff if he just wants to report a typo?
B) Joining: Make joining a real procedure. Say hello to new people who want to join, accompany their first steps. Should they fail they cannot complain that there was nobody to help them.

This two-way-system or dual system could prevent a lot of vandalism, improve the friendliness towards new people (simple vandals and trolls will be filtered away very soon) and still benefit from the input of readers, maybe even better.

Alas, I am afraid that a lot of old Wikipedians would detest this dual system as “the end of the wiki, the end of openess”. It takes only a look at pages such as the articles for deletion log to see that the openess defended does not exist.

            So if you visit Wikipedia that often, you’d probably see that it wants people donating again. And can you guess how much they want off people in the US? You guessed it! 7 million dollars! A couple of months ago, Wikipedia wanted us to donate $6m, to keep their site alive. Now it doesn’t tell. Are you really sure they need millions of dollars just to keep Wikipedia alive? Or do they just want money from people so that they can swim in a bathtub in it?

            As you can see, I have a photo of the Wikipedia logo, along with it’s slogan “The free encyclopedia.” Now define “free” since we have to donate. First of all, most of us people just go on that website to learn, research, or follow the curiousity of their heart’s content, not to pay just to view or read something simple. Second, give us a reason why do you want the money and what you’re gonna do with it, besides people and technology, such as “Who?” and “What type of technology?” You guys have no more than 35 employees running the company in the last 8 years, I don’t see why you need to much money just to continue. And third, dude, the economy is in a bad state. Try again in like… 100 years.

Er kam dieses mal nicht von den “üblichen Verdächtigen” und ich gehe davon aus, dass selbst diese den LA nicht ernst genommen hätten.

“Leider” kam es zu keiner grossen Diskussion und das Benutzerkonto Zeitrafferin wurde dauerhaft gesperrt und der Löschantrag entfern.

Ich gehe auch mal davon aus, dass es nicht Julia war, die den Löschantrag gestellt hat. (siehe auch die entsprechende Diskussion)

A TOUR of its carefully tended, 300-acre corporate campus here leaves little doubt why surveys, year after year, rate the SAS Institute, the world’s largest private software company, among the best places to work.

There is the subsidized day care and preschool. There are the four company doctors and the dozen nurses who provide free primary care. The recreational amenities include basketball and racquetball courts, a swimming pool, exercise rooms and 40 miles of running and biking trails. There is a meditation garden, as well as on-site haircuts, manicures, and jewelry repair. Employees are encouraged to work 35-hour weeks.

Academics have studied the company’s benefit-enhanced corporate culture as a model for nurturing creativity and loyalty among engineers and other workers. Six years ago, in a report on “60 Minutes,” Morley Safer called working at SAS “the good life.”

But that good life is under threat today as never before. SAS’s specialty, a lucrative niche called business intelligence software, is becoming mainstream. Free, open-source alternatives to some of the company’s products are increasingly popular. On the other end of the spectrum, the heavyweights of the software industry — Oracle, SAP, Microsoft and, especially, I.B.M. — are plunging in and investing billions of dollars.

“It will be a dogfight,” says Bill Hostmann, an analyst at Gartner. “SAS has never faced a competitor like I.B.M. And I do think I.B.M. sees SAS as a big, fatted cow.”

The term “business intelligence software” applies to a wide range of products and services, but all the technology is aimed at helping businesses mine nuggets of insight from mountains of data. SAS has traditionally specialized in advanced software to analyze huge data sets and to generate predictive statistical models for large corporations and government agencies.

Credit card companies, for example, use SAS to detect unusual buying patterns in real time, and to spot potentially fraudulent charges. Giant retail chains use SAS to tailor pricing and product offerings down to the store level. Telecommunications companies use SAS to identify the few thousand customers, among millions, most likely to switch to another cellphone carrier, and to aim marketing at them. SAS software is also used to parse sensor signals from North Sea oil rigs, combined with weather and structural data, to predict failure of parts before it happens. Of the 100 largest companies worldwide, 92 use SAS software.

But as the stream of companies’ collected data turns into a torrent, SAS and other software companies are trying to find new ways to harness it. The information is generated not only by computerized systems for tracking operations, customers and sales. It also comes from new data sources like Web site visits, social network chatter and public records accessible over the Internet, as well as genome sequences, sensor signals and surveillance tapes, all in digital form.

This data explosion, experts say, is an untapped asset at most companies, which lack the tools and skills to exploit it. Yet the long-range potential, they say, is to use this data for far more fine-grained analysis of markets, customer behavior and operations, making business more of a science and less a seat-of-the-pants art.

“Now, the data is available so business can move toward evidence-based decision-making,” says Erik Brynjolfsson, an economist and director of the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “This market is a huge opportunity.”

That opportunity is not lost on SAS. “Our advantage is the incredible depth of our technology, developed over years and applied to specific industries,” says James H. Goodnight, the chief executive and a co-founder of SAS. “No one can match our toolbox.”

Indeed, no one underestimates SAS’s technical prowess. The big question is whether the company’s seemingly pampered culture can embrace the higher-octane institutional metabolism that it will need to succeed.

“We know we have to change — no question about it,” says Jim Davis, 51, a senior vice president at SAS. “Our market space has changed dramatically in the last 18 months or so, more than at any time over the 33-year history of the company. We can’t sit back. Things are only going to get faster.”

THE company traces its roots to a time when computing was costly and for the few. Originally called Statistical Analysis System, it was founded in 1976 by Mr. Goodnight and three colleagues from the agricultural statistics department at North Carolina State University. Its techniques were initially used to calculate the intricacies of soil, weather, seed varieties and other factors to improve crop yields.

To build an audience, Mr. Goodnight spent nights packing up boxes of computer tapes and manuals, which he sent to university and corporate researchers. Soon, companies wanted him and his academic colleagues to develop software tools tailored for industry. In 1976 at a users’ conference, 300 or so people showed up, many from business.

“That was pretty much an ‘aha’ moment for us, that it was time to expand beyond the university,” Mr. Goodnight recalls. “It was a little scary, cutting the academic umbilical chord. But I was convinced we could do it.”

The gold rings, bracelets and pendants were originally produced in 1979 when the King Tut exhibition previously visited the gallery, says the Toronto Star.Eya Donald Greenland is sculpting the items, which will be sold in the museum’s gift shop for up to C$1,000 (£566).The original sculptor was her late husband Ivaan Kotulsky, who designed and made the collection that is inspired by ancient Egypt.Mr Kotulsky passed away last year and Ms Donald Greenland says that she did not intend to recreate her husband’s work until the AGO approached her with an enquiry about the gold items from 1979 burning fireplaces.She has found 18 originals that were made by her husband and will be reproducing more of the Egyptian-inspired gold scarab jewellery to be sold in the museum’s gift shop. The King Tut exhibition will be displayed at the AGO between November 24th and April 18th 2010.

Using a wiki for technical documentation

My article is on pages 6-10 of the PDF file. (Printed page numbers are 4-8.) It covers the following topics:

Trends in British technical communication

The journal’s editorial team allowed me choose another article from the journal to include in the PDF extract. I chose Marian Newell’s very interesting article, “Trends in British Technical Communication”. She discusses a number of topics, including:

• Our job titles — Are we technical writers, technical communicators, technical authors, content creators…? Personally, I prefer to be known as a technical writer. But read what Marian has to say.
• Deliverables and workplaces — printed or online content, large long-lasting projects or smaller shorter projects.
• Tools and methods.
• Generalisation and specialisation.
• Translation.
• Fads and fashions — user-generated content, social networks, information facilitators, modular content.
• Quality and productivity — Is “good enough” good enough? Should we obtain a standard qualification to put us on a par with other professions?
• Economic and commercial factors — global economic crisis, current demand, freelances and agencies, outsourcing, offshoring, remuneration, standards of written English.

Many lecturers and teachers will recognise the feeling of disheartenment when confronted by an undergraduate essay containing multiple references to Wikipedia. Despite regular exhortations for students to resist its charms, its appeal seems almost overwhelming. Although the site is loved by many, its major selling point of completely open access (i.e. ‘anyone can contribute to or edit’ its entries) is precisely why academics shake their heads in frustration.

However, in a recent interview with Emma Barnett of The Telegraph, Jimmy Wales (co-founder) appears to suggest that things are about to change at Wikipedia. Most noticeable is the creation of new measures, described as “flagged revisions”. In essence, this will mean that all new submissions and edited content, which relate to a living person, will have to be authenticated by one of Wikipedia’s editors, prior to online publication. Despite criticism that the whole ethos of the Wikipedia site will be degraded by the introduction of pre-publication censorship, Wales is convinced that this is the way forward. He points to a slowing of growth amongst new articles on the English version, suggesting that contributors are now concentrating on ensuring the articles already available are accurate, rather than simply adding more and more new material.

Whether the promise of ‘an increasing focus on quality and referencing’ will be able to sway the academic community, remains to be seen. However, the sheer volume of information and the speed with which it is checked and uploaded, makes it unlikely that Wikipedia is anywhere near reaching the stringent standards required for academia and education.

Nowadays, everybody is familiar with Wikipedia. It is probably the only truly successful wiki. The term wiki is a shorter term of wiki wiki which means ‘quick’ or ‘fast’ in the native language of Hawaii.

But firstly, what is a wiki? A wiki is a internet site you can make yourself, for example at http://wikia.com/wiki/wikia. Anyone can add, remove, or otherwise edit all content, quickly and easily. It is especially very beneficial for a group of people who wants to organize an activity together. An example: one person creates a post with all kinds of equipment that are necessary to bring for the activity. If another person already has some of that equipment there is no need to buy it. He goes to the Wiki site and adds or edit all content of the message to let the other participants know which equipment he has and what still needs to be bought. Therefore, a wiki is a great way to get rid of all the emails that end up in your inbox about one subject.

Wiki`s are based on four elements: Openness, peering, sharing and acting globally. These four aspects make it really easy to interact and operate on an effective way.

It is the interactive element that adds value to the business, not the technical definition of what a Wiki really is.

The Blackstone Group will buy the frozen foods maker Birds Eye Foods through one of its companies, Pinnacle Foods, for $1.3 billion, the companies said Thursday.

It is the latest sign of a thawing in private equity deals, which were constrained by the financial turmoil.

Blackstone, which has large real estate and private equity assets, has stepped up deal activity in the last few months, buying Anheuser-Busch InBev’s American theme parks for up to $2.7 billion.

Birds Eye has long-term debt of about $700 million, the companies said in a statement. Blackstone bought Pinnacle, which makes packaged foods like Hungry-Man frozen dinners, in 2007 for $2.16 billion.

Birds Eye, majority-owned by the private equity firm Vestar Capital Partners, had filed for an initial public stock offering to raise up to $350 million.

The company said in the filing that it held the top position in the frozen vegetables market with sales of $935.6 million in the fiscal year ended in June 2009.

Pinnacle Foods was advised by Blackstone, Barclays Capital, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Credit Suisse. Birds Eye was advised by Centerview Partners and JPMorgan Chase.
