Päivät olivat itseasiassa aivan juuri, viime viikolla. Panoraaman pohjana on kolme kuvaa. Muita Kirjastovirkailijapäiviin liittyviä kuvia en Flickristä löydä, enkä netistä muutenkaan. Vaikka kirjastoissa onkin kyse ennen kaikkea julkaisuista, eivät kirjastolaiset itse ole kovin hanakoita julkaisemaan netissä. Ei ehkä tule mieleen, niinkään.

Tämän kuvatehtävän yhteydessä voisinkin mainita, että yksi parhaista, koskaan nälemistäni oppiresursseista on You suck at Photoshop.

Stressaannun ellen taggaa kuviani. Olenhan kirjastolainen!

Siution Pyhän Pietarin kirkko

Wikimedia Commonsiin, Wikimedian yhteiseen mediakirjastoon olen kerran laittanut yhden kuvan, testimielessä.

“Blonde-haired” and “buxom” are two words that usually define playboy magazines cover models. But in the November issue, the featured lady could be better described as “blue-haired” and “illustrated.”

According to a story on CNN.com the latest model to grace Playboy’s cover and pictorial spread will be none other than Marge Simpson. The surprising choice in cover model comes as “The Simpsons” celebrates its 20th anniversary. (To check out the magazine cover.

Playboy editors hope the blue-haired beauty will commemorate the popular TV show and also boost the magazine’s popularity. Like many magazines, the past year brought a 31 percent decrease in the number of Playboy’s ad pages. With luck, the Marge Simpson issue will bring bigger circulation numbers and reel in younger readers.

Surprisingly, the Playboy issue isn’t Ms. Simpson’s magazine cover debut. In 2004,Maxim magazine featured the lovable cartoon character on the front of its issue.

In an effort to get into the spirit of Halloween, I spontaneously decided to do a quick design. Wikimedia Commons is always a great place to start. Type the first word that comes to mind into the search field and go from there. I crafted this monstrosity while listening to Fake Blood’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.Which can be found here at TRASH MENAGERIE. Fake Blood is a DJ out of the UK. Like Boys Noize, his stuff is pretty hard hitting club techno. I’ve always loved Techno and Electro, being fascinated by the UK Big Beat acts like Chemical Bros. and the Prodigy as a kid. Maybe it’s the pace at which I’ve been working lately, but the tempo seems to fit my working style. Could explain my recurring case of carpal tunnel syndrome. Ah wells, stay busy to keep the mind off things. I sleep in a wrist brace. Pardon the rambling, I’m juuuust flowing.

Cheers folks, let’s have some Halloween fun!!

Crab Nebula

Today’s Nobel announcement for physics goes to three scientists who explored the science behind technology we’re all familiar with – making possible fiber optics and digital cameras.

Charles Kao has worked in both academia and industry, while Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith worked for Bell Labs in New Jersey (bringing to an astonishing 8 the total of Nobel prizes awarded for work there). The Nobel Academy lauded them as “masters of light.”

Boyle and Smith developed the charged-coupled device (CCD), the “eye” of every digital camera.

“Without the CCD, the development of digital cameras would have taken a slower course. Without CCD we would not have seen the astonishing images of space taken by the Hubble space telescope, or the images of the red desert on our neighboring planet Mars.” (from the Academy announcement)

So thanks to that work, we have the breath-taking image at the top of this post, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons. If you haven’t discovered this amazing collection of images (more than 5 million), make haste. Most are copyright free and the scientific collection is particularly good, since a lot of pictures taken in government-sponsored research end up there.

In my previous post I’ve already mentioned the image donation from the German photography arch

In my previous post I’ve already mentioned the image donation from the German photography archives Deutsche Fotothek to Wikimedia Commons. The East German photography is less known than western, but the works of real masters are worth to be discovered.

Recently, I’ve found out for myself the photographic art of Roger and Renate Rössing. According to Wikipedia, Roger Rössing (1929-2006) was one of the most famous photographers in eastern Germany. Renate (1929-2005) met Roger Rössing at the photographic classes of School of Visual Arts in Leipzig they attended between 1948 and 1951. Together they have published about 90 picture books.

In 1952 they took a series of photographs devoted to Nacktkultur which drew my attention by their old fashioned and conservative style. It was the time when naturism began expanding in East Germany. But only since the 1970s the nude bathing in lakes and the Baltic Sea became widespread.

Badende

One can discover the photographs taken by Roger and Renate Rössing here.
