Buenos Aires.

According to a latest study, Wikipedia lost 49,000 of its volunteer editors in the first three months of 2009 and the site could face major problems ahead.

In the first three months of 2009, Internet encyclopaedia Wikipedia ‘lost’ 49,000 of its volunteer editors, according to a university research.

Over the same period in 2008, just 4900 people, who voluntarily amended and updated the information on the website, had stopped contributing.

Felipe Ortega, from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, who carried out the study, believes the site could face major problems ahead.

He said: “If the negative trend is maintained for too much time, say one or two years, eventually the project could enter a problematic phase.” However, Wikimedia UK, a chapter of the organisation that operates Wikipedia, has denied that it means the site is struggling. It says that it is seeking more expert contributors.

“We’re trying to engage a bit more at the moment with people who are very knowledgeable, people who are experts, so working with museums was the obvious next step,” the BBC News quoted Michael Peel of Wikimedia UK, as telling the Times newspaper. Peel is confident that the knowledge website will continue to run smoothly.

He added: “Wikipedia is definitely not dying. It’s freely licensed, which means that content that has been added will be there forever.”

This is, indeed, Night Photography, and the image quality is, imo, excellent. Hence my final decision on my first additional lens is to acquire the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telezoom lens. Furthermore, I tinker with the idea to replace my 450D with the new 500D (15MP and new: HD Video) … prices are falling at the moment (YES, even in Germany!).

I really hope to get the possibility to visit Hong Kong during my year in Shanghai, even if it is only for a weekend. Hong Kong must be vibrant and the views enchanting. I already spotted a great place to stay (on budget): It’s called Yesinspace and is located on Kowloon’s seaside.

Tee muokkauksia, älä sotaa

AVO-kurssin viides viikko käsittelee Wikipediaa ja Wikimediaa. Lähdeaineistosta Dirk Riehlen tekemä haastattelu How and Why Wikipedia Works: An Interview with Angela Beesley, Elisabeth Bauer, and Kizu Naoko osoittautui erittäin mielenkiintoiseksi, vaikka yleensä en jostain syystä tykkää lukea haastatteluja.

Tapaan toisinaan roikottelemaan Wikipediaan liittyvillä IRC-kanavilla, ihan yleisen urkkimisen vuoksi vaikka en varsinaiseen Wikipedia-työhön olekaan osallistunut kuin muutamalla pienen pienellä muokkauksella kauan aikaa sitten.

Wikipedialla on monia etuja moniin muihin tiedonlähteisiin verrattuna. Aivan mahtava idea hakukoneeksi!! Sääli että sille kävi jotain.

Google Maps for Mobile

Clay Shirky – “Here Comes Everybody” is interviewed in a compelling piece on the future of social media.

Examples:

Renegotiation of the bargain surrounding copyright law (example Pirate Bay – now the third biggest party in the Swedish Parliament) has become a topic and theme that will potentially move centre stage in the European politics. If democratic legitimacy gets to the point where opponents of existing penal copyright laws have a sizeable influence as elections across Europe unwind there is a real chance of a breakdown of the existing political party based interest structure and the likelihood of it being reshaped. Particularly as if enough people refuse to obey the plans for new penal laws to mean they become unenforceable.

A structure of the nature of the global based Wikipedia has the potential to be the core ladder for all sorts of forms of open source projects that have the potential to reshape thinking, actions and knowledge right around the world.

Introduction

insertTags('<u>', '</u>', 'souligné');

—

function keyboardShortcuts() {
  // le code sera ici
}

  document.onkeyup = function(e) { //l'user relâche une touche
    //code à executer
  }

  document.onkeydown = function(e){  //l'user appuie sur une touche
    //code à executer
  }

  //l'evenement "onkeyup" est appelé à chaque fois qu'une touche est relachée.
  document.onkeyup=function(e) {
    if(e.which == 17) isCtrl=false;  //l'user relâche la touche ctrl (qui a le code 17). La variable passe a False
  }

  //l'evenement "onkeydown" est appelé à chaque fois qu'une touche est pressée.
  document.onkeydown=function(e){
    if(e.which == 17) { //l'user appuie sur la touche ctrl. La variable passe a True
      isCtrl=true;
    }
  }

    if( isCtrl == true ) {
       switch (e.which) { //quelle touche a été enfoncée ?
  	  case 66: //b
            insertTags("'''", "'''", 'gras');
            return false
	    break;
	  case 73: //i
            insertTags("''", "''", 'italique');
            return false
	    break;
          case 76: // l
            insertTags('[[', ']]', 'lien interne');
            return false
	    break;
          case 77: // m
            insertTags('{{', '}}', 'modèle');
            return false
	    break;
	  case 85: //u
            insertTags('<u>','</u>', 'souligné');
            return false
	    break
       }
     }

function keyboardShortcuts() {

  var isCtrl = false;

  document.onkeyup=function(e) { //l'user relâche la touche ctrl. La variable passe a False
    if(e.which == 17) isCtrl=false;
  }

  document.onkeydown=function(e){
    if(e.which == 17) { //l'user appuie sur la touche ctrl. La variable passe a True
      isCtrl=true;
      return;
    }

    //gestion des ctrl+lettre que l'on veux ajouter.
    if( isCtrl == true ) {
       switch (e.which) { //quelle touche a été enfoncée ?
  	  case 66: //b
	    insertTags("'''", "'''", 'gras');
            return false
	    break;
	  case 73: //i
	    insertTags("''", "''", 'italique');
            return false
	    break;
          case 76: // l
	    insertTags('[[', ']]', 'lien interne');
            return false
	    break;
          case 77: // m
	    insertTags('{{', '}}', 'modèle');
            return false
	    break;
	  case 85: //u
	    insertTags('<u>', '</u>', 'souligné');
            return false
	    break
       }
     }
  }
  return true
}

//la fonction qui gère tous les appel de fonctions (du moins dans mes divers billets
//!\ CELA VEUX DIRE QU'IL FAUT FUSIONNER AVEC LA FONCTION main() EXISTANTE, SI VOUS EN AVEZ UNE /!\
function main() {
  // [...  autres fonctions  ... ]

      keyboardShortcuts()
   }
}

addOnloadHook(main)

In spite of its regular portrayal as “anarchic”, “anything goes” was never true for Wikipedia. Begin

In spite of its regular portrayal as “anarchic”, “anything goes” was never true for Wikipedia. Beginning with the list of principles issued by its founder, Jimbo Wales, a continuously growing number of rules guides contributors to and hence development of Wikipedia. One of the most prominent rules is the aim of delivering a “Neutral Point of View” (NPOV). Other important rules deal with notability. While the NPOV is debated with regard to every single article, Wikipedia’s several “notability guidelines” try to resolve the question which information ought (not) to be included in the free online encyclopedia in the first place. Over the years, long lists of conventions have emerged for all kinds subjects. Regarding people, for example, the English Wikipedia lists in detail the notability criteria for members of different professional groups – ranging from Academics over Criminals and Diplomats to Entertainers (including actors, comedians, models, etc.).

But notability guidelines or, as they are called in the German Wikipedia “relevance criteria” (“Relevanzkriterien”), share the problem of all taxonomies, namely a certain degree of arbitrariness; an arbitrariness that makes them particularly prone to being criticized and challenged. In the English Wikipedia debates about notability even led to the formation of two antagonistic camps: The “Association of Deletionist Wikipedians” (ADW) sails under the banner of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his famous quote:

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

The opposite camp assembles around the “Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians” (AIW), which goes even back to the old Romans for their motto:

“The motto of the AIW is Conservata veritate, which translates to, ‘with truth preserved.’ This motto reflects the inclusionist desire to change Wikipedia only when no knowledge would be lost as a result.”

While both “associations” exist since 2004 and their dispute seemed to be rather settled, recent controversies about “relevance” in the German Wikipedia demonstrate that and how such rules may still be re-negotiated:

First, forceful interventions of individuals such as Pavel Mayers blog-post “99 percent of all Germans are irrelevant” (German) are able to initiate fundamental re-negotiation processes of seemingly accepted rule-sets. Of course, this does not mean any individual could achieve this any time, but it shows how articulating silent or latent criticism can quickly gain momentum – at least in a case of an online community such as Wikipedia.

Second, the German Wikimedia chapter organization, which is officially recognized by the US Wikimedia Foundation, decided to engage in this debate, even hosting a public debate on the issue. This is remarkable, as Wikimedia chapter organizations are very careful not even to appear as if they were trying to “represent” the community of contributors but rather define their role as purely supportive (see also “Wikimania Preview #2”). So far, most of Wikipedia’s rule setting processes have solely been undertaken online without any engagement of formal organizational bodies. To a certain extent, this attempt of opening up debates on Wikipedia governance also for “offline participants” may be inspired by growing critique from Wikipedia outsiders, best illustrated by a short remark of Adam Soboczynski in the German weekly broad sheet “Die Zeit”:

“The encyclopedia Wikipedia has been dominated all along by a Guardian Council, which censors entries and conducts quality control” (translation L.D.)

Third, (re-)negotiation of rules in such a geographically and linguistically diverse community as the Wikipedia may lead to asynchronous debates with potentially different outcomes, which nevertheless are still connected and mutually related. Given the Wikipedia’s decentralized structure, achieving regulatory coherence across language projects can so become more and more difficult. To a certain degree, decentralization eases the pressure on finding a common regulatory solution: Allowing some incoherence between rules within different language projects may thus stabilize the Wikipedia network as a whole.

But there are limits to this transnational decoupling when it comes to fundamental questions of identity: Shall Wikipedia become a general repository for human knowledge and thereby re-define the concept of what an encyclopedia should be? Or shall Wikipedia abide to the traditional concept put forward by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert in the 18th century? These questions can probably be answered only transnationally and for the Wikipedia as a whole.

An Austrian mailbox waiting for some goodies to be ‘plunked’ into it. I can imagine the sound letters would make as they dropped down into it.

I found this yummy photo on Wikimedia Commons today and began to think of all the inspiration for art and crafts and just thinking…. about life that rummaging through the Commons photos would bring. I have uploaded a few of my own photos to the Commons when I knew that they would illustrate a Wikipedia article well, and I must say that I think they add nicely (see the article on Standing Stones or The Clearances), but today is the first day that I’ve thought about other uses for the Commons. For instance, this blog. Wikimedia Commons makes available over 5,000,000 photos for use under a creative commons license. Each photograph clearly states what you are allowed or not allowed to do with it. I think that I just need to mention that a Wikipedian named “Moschitz” took this photo. Anyhoo, take some time to ramble around on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons to learn some stuff, get inspired, get enthralled and add your teensy weensy bit of expertise to the knowledge bank of our global community.

This week’s reading assignment “Minds of Fire: Open Education, the Long Tail, and Learni

This week’s reading assignment “Minds of Fire: Open Education, the Long Tail, and Learning 2.0″ left me reflecting on two ideas.

1. Open Source
One of the most unclear areas in education, for me anyway, is knowing what materials and media you can and cannot use in the classroom. During our Professional Issues class last spring quarter, my classmates and I were introduced to the subject, but left the class still feeling pretty unsure about the usage rules. Hearing about open source sites like Creative Commons and Wikimedia Commons was eye opening. I knew about Wikipedia and YouTube, but Creative Commons and Wikimedia seem a bit more comprehensive in the content they find. This is exciting for me as a future teacher. When I need information or a photo or video I can simply go to one of these sites. I can then use what I find without worrying about legal issues (for the most part).

I wanted to check out the sites so I experimented by searching for things like the Declaration of Independence, forms of government, and human interaction and received great results. I like in Creative Commons how the search can be focused in on specific forms of media. For example, if I needed a picture, I could go to the Flickr tab to narrow my search. I think these sites would be great student resources as well – they shouldn’t be just for teacher use. I would love to introduce my students to some of the sites so that they can gather information and search for supplemental materials.

2. The growth of online learning/classes
“Whereas traditional schools offer a finite number or courses of study, the ‘catalog’ of subjects that can be learned online is almost unlimited.” To me, this is exciting news. I have heard other who think oppositely because they think that internet-learning will take the place of face to face learning. I can’t imagine that scenario to ever be true. I can’t imagine a day where there will be no elementary, middle, or high schools. I cannot imagine the day that actual human interaction (not interaction via technology) will be obsolete in the learning process. I guess I consider the online class selections as an opportunity for students to further the knowledge they receive in school (both secondary and higher level). As the article points out, this continuing education is important in the 21st century where career switches are commonplace and different knowledge is demanded in the workplace.

Two months on from the groundbreaking GLAM-wiki conference, where cultural workers and wikipedians m

Two months on from the groundbreaking GLAM-wiki conference, where cultural workers and wikipedians met to consider mutual benefits of a partnership (I blogged about it here), I have been gathering some thoughts on the recommendations – and will post them soon. Strangely, very few people have publicly commented, notable exceptions being GerardM (a Dutch wikipedian), Liam himself, and (briefly) Mia Ridge, a London-based digital cultural worker. What’s with the silence?

Is there a good reason why no Australian cultural workers have commented publicly, or are you, like me, puzzled by the eerie quiet?

In my view, even cultural workers very pressed for time should be thinking about it, because that page of recommendations is an important work-in-progress. Why? Because everyone who works in a cultural institution is responsible in some way for enabling members of the public to access and engage with cultural heritage. I can’t think of a cultural institution whose mission is not to extend and enhance access to and engagement with cultural heritage. And from my perspective, the GLAM-wiki conference buzzed for the very reason that a partnership between the cultural and wiki sectors holds such promise.

If wikipedians and cultural workers could collaborate effectively, both sectors (and let’s face it, the public) would benefit immensely, as Liam suggested in the abstract for his presentation to Wikipedians about the GLAM-wiki conference:

[Wiki] projects have fantastic coverage – both breadth and depth – in popular culture but the same cannot be said for ‘high’ culture. [...] if we hope to produce ‘the sum of all human knowledge’ then we need to address this gap. Where this information resides is in the world’s museums, libraries, archives and galleries and we must begin to work with these institutions – for our mutual benefit.

In other words, the wiki community is hoping to get hold of significant knowledge that is currently hidden from popular view because it resides only in cultural institutions. And for cultural institutions, their collection material could gain the popularity of Wikipedia.

So how come – and despite the wiki community’s enthusiasm – the cultural community seems so lukewarm? As cultural workers we might see the obstacles; but we can still seek the goal.

Is it that staff of cultural institutions don’t see the potential? Could it be that we have popularity ‘issues’? Or as a collective, are we simply (still) anti-Wikipedia? I’m curious to learn what others think.

As an internet strategist, I am very near to Turkish Futurists. Last week, I had a meeting with them

As an internet strategist, I am very near to Turkish Futurists. Last week, I had a meeting with them and Ufuk Tarhan told me that being good and ethical will shape the community in the future. Today I wrote an article in Harvard Biz and see that online community are also on the same point. And I remember the presentation of the founder of wikipedia, Jimmy Wales who also metioned it on his speech…

I now, probably sure about that being good and ethical is the most important commerce rule in the new world which also shaped by internet…

Can an Online Community Shape a Strategy?

We are reaching the end of the first stage of our work supporting Wikimedia’s strategy development process (check out the progress at http://strategy.wikimedia.org) and I hit my first soul-searching moment. The catalyst? An email from Wikimedia strategy project manager Eugene Kim a couple of weeks back sharing his thoughts on how to think and act in a wiki way.

He shared three principles:

1.	Act first, think later

2.	Be human

3.	Fail early and often

In all candor, the email was a critique of our “traditional” working style – and I’d hazard to guess the working style of most managers and strategy consultants. We weren’t getting the active partnership of the community that we wanted early on. My team was getting frustrated that no one was editing or discussing our wiki pages. Our first reaction: critique the technology (“maybe wikis don’t work for strategy”) and the community (“maybe they aren’t interested”).

However on reflection, I realized we were:

1.	Thinking at the expense of acting (engaging) with the community

2.	Trying to perfect the “imperfect-able”

3.	Scared of having someone in the community find mistakes or disagree with our conclusions

I’ll admit- we really struggled to find our footing in this open process. As “professionals”, we see our job as delivering a high quality product that compels clients (shows we are worth the money) to action. This approach isn’t always as collaborative as we’d like it to be, really. I hadn’t really thought that though until we entered the wiki world, where collaboration isn’t something that happens after the work is done. It is part of the work and that requires the work to happen in a transparent way, so people can really engage.

Once we got over ourselves, we started to experiment with Eugene’s principles. I jumped on the Wiki on a Friday afternoon and wrote the top line summary of the strategic issues – online for all to see. No endless editing and revision. It turned out well, though not perfect. Here are two pieces of feedback from the community:

“This is exactly the planning page and also the planning talk page we will need in the coming months. I will look at it closely.” Art Unbound

“Can you imagine any business, small or large, any NGO, any University, any Government, doing strategic planning, without having “where the enabling money is coming from” as a top issue. They would be regarded as very amateurish. Have a Funding Strategy is of very high importance, and should be raised from the present ridiculous low point in the ESP list.”–Richardb

I am particularly pleased by Richardb’s comment (and I don’t mind being called an amateur!). The whole point of a strategy process is to figure out priorities for how to spend scarce resources of time and money. It is on these most difficult questions that we are most likely to follow the “traditional” way, thinking that the decisions are too important to get “wrong”. In the design of the process, even the Wikimedia Foundation board and project team struggled about whether to put the strategy synthesis role out in the community. It seemed like a pretty big trust fall. They hesitantly did so, but with strong guidance over the make up of that task force.

Is this the right direction? We need to wait and see whether the direction setting that this task force does is compelling and aligns with the sensibilities of the various stakeholders. Who is more likely to assimilate the wide range of data, values and viewpoints required to develop a good strategy: a small group of managers and strategists (with their homogeneous pedigrees) or a motley crew who can see issues from a myriad of viewpoints and aren’t afraid to speak their mind?

I am still playing with Wiktionary IPA as a source for my implementation of TTS. Conrad Irwin suggested the dump download from Wiktionary might be more appropriate & complete than spidering on demand and building a local map that way, and I could not but agree with him, the Wiki dumps had completely slipped my mind when wrangling with the miscellaneous other little subtasks that this project seems to be engendering.

Anyway, with the downloaded XML weighing in at 120MB+ it looked like this was going to be a nightmare, then I remembered James Clark’s trang, a tool I haven’t used in a long time, just unzip and classpath the executable jar and run as follows:

That gives me enough to work with, now to tear into the XML with JAXB…..

NB (Later). Well I played with JAXB, but unfortunately there are a number of facets of JAXB which will make this less amenable than XMLBeans, notably the issues surrounding preservation of whitespace & full support for all schema constructs. Close, but unfortunately no cigar on this occasion. So I am now working up an XMLBeans cut, and this is looking promising.

NNB(Later again) Well it looks like XmlBeans won’t play nice with large files, which is a shame because there is a lot of stuff in there that I could have done with. Off to play with STAX /cry….

By now, most web surfers have had first-hand experience with Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia to which anyone can contribute. As a quick resource for gaining knowledge, it’s hard to beat; it’s fast,and it’s comprehensive.

Speaking personally, fewer than 10% of my queries on Wikipedia come back empty. So I find it a great resource for getting a quick handle on most any topic.

Of course, it would be unwise to consider Wikipedia an unimpeachable resource because its content is not vetted in the traditional way. Volunteers author the articles, and it’s up to the community of Wikipedia readers to call out and correct errors or omissions to the entries.

Just who are these volunteers, and what motivates them to devote time to Wikipedia? As it turns out, while there’s no pay, there’s a strong mixture of altruism and ego gratification associated with being a Wikipedia contributor.

This is borne out in an international research survey conducted jointly by the Wikimedia Foundation (the not-for-profit group that operates Wikipedia) and United Nations University’s MERIT tech research project. A whopping 175,000 responses were collected. Of these, approximately one third reported that they contribute Wikipedia content in addition to consuming it.

So what makes those people want to become a Wikipedia contributor? Three-fourths of them agreed with the statement that they “like the idea of sharing knowledge and want to contribute to it.” Two-thirds also reported that they “saw an error I wanted to fix.” Nearly half would contribute more often “if I knew there were specific topic areas that needed my help.”

The survey also uncovered some fascinating demographic statistics regarding Wikipedia contributors. It comes as no real surprise that the median age of Wikipedia contributors is in the mid- to upper-twenties … or that one-fourth of them have post-graduate degrees.

But the gender breakdown is curious. In fact, the survey found that only 13% of Wikipedia contributors are women – a startling finding. And even among those who have edited others’ entries rather than contributing full articles of their own, only 31% are women. The researchers steered clear of suggesting any reasons for the gender skew, which was more than likely a cop-out.

And what are the reasons why people don’t contribute to Wikipedia? Predictably, “time constraints” were cited by many respondents. Another factor cited was not knowing how to create or edit the Wikipedia pages. But a substantial percentage (~25%) cited being fearful of making a mistake and “getting in trouble” for it.

So one takeaway from the survey is that it takes certain traits to be a Wikipedia contributor — like being a self-proclaimed “informed expert” looking for validation, affirmation and recognition … or even being narcissistic?

Come to think of it, perhaps it’s not so surprising after all that Wikipedia contributors are over 85% male!
