“Pacific Division better known as Pac Div is a rap trio signed to Universal Motown. They started out with 10 members in 2002 and eliminated 7 in 2008. In 2006, they made a online mixtape, Sealed for Freshness: The Blend Tape. As of the year 2009, they are currently to release a album entitled Grown Kid Syndrome and are working with The Neptunes. “Mayor” from their mixtape “Church League Champions” debuted on BET’s 106th and Park on August 7th 2009. “

ok so sammy pac div sounds like the cool kids ” sometimes” maybe because chuck inglish of the coolkids produces a large amount songs for them but lets look at it this way they also sound like wu tang clan Slum Village native tounges and sometimes even learders of the new school that last comparasion might me a little out there but the point is if pac div is a collection of good music over the years and you dont like that…………..what the hell do you like.

There’s been some coverage in the last few days of the Webby Awards Top “Ten Most Influential Internet Moments of the Decade” – incidentally how bad a name are the “Webby Awards”? It’s like deciding to to nickname the Oscars, the “Filmies”. Anyway I digress but the list makes for good reading. Like any of these “best of lists”, the selection is subjective matter and you may disagree – for instance I would argue that the proliferation of broadband in households in the last ten years has proved a watershed moment for the internet and its growth as a medium.

Agree or not, I have picked out my three key moments from the list:

Google AdWords launches (2000) – this was massive. It’s when Google turned internet advertising into a multi-billion dollar industry. It was also an advertiser’s dream – reaching people who were already looking for your product /service no matter how niche. Everyone has been playing catch-up since.

Wikipedia launches (2001) – This is probably the best example of “free” and how the internet turned the regular offline economy on its head. Imagine someone telling you ten years ago that there would be a reference site where you could find out information on practically any subject for free, and that the content was provided on a collaborative basis by unpaid volunteers. Exactly, you wouldn’t have seen it coming.

Facebook opens to non-college students and Twitter takes off (2006) - social networks, the success story of the Noughties. So simple an idea, you wish you had thought of it first. For me, this is when people starting using the internet in a different way. Previously people used it in a very functional way – to pay bills, read email, find out more information, etc. Now it is one of the main ways people are spending their leisure time, essentially “lean back” time like when we used to watch TV in the living room.

I’ve seen the commercials (very clever I must say), I’ve heard about it, and I’ve popped over there a couple of times, but really, I haven’t used Bing at all.

Aside from their “decision engine” marketing campaign, I didn’t know the specifics of their angle so I headed over to the vast, global town hall meeting otherwise known as wikipedia and did a bit of poking around.

According to the wikipedia page for Bing, what sets Bing apart is the “listing of search suggestions in real time as queries are entered and a list of related searches (called “Explorer pane” on the left side of search results)… [and] the ability to Save & Share search histories.” They’ve also flipped the minimal search engine page on its ear with their beautiful, full size background image.

At last count, Bing had 9.4% of the market share. Who are those people? Do they find Bing a superior engine, or do they all work for Microsoft?

We are very fortunate that we are constantly being wooed and given free stuff to stick with a product. We can be picky and critical because we determine who succeeds and fails (how the times have changed), and something new is always coming down the pipe. Who knows what the future will bring. I remember years ago, a friend mentioned a new search engine that she really liked…called Google.

What has your experience with Bing been? What’s your overall impression? Do you use it? Have you used it? What did you like or not like? I’d love to know.

Defend an openess that does not exist? A wiki is a web site everybody (or anyone) can edit, they say

Defend an openess that does not exist?

A wiki is a web site everybody (or anyone) can edit, they say. But how “wiki” is Wikipedia nowadays? Ed Chi has taught us that 20 % of a newbie’s edits are reverted, in comparison to 2 % of the edits of an experienced Wikipedian. It became difficult to join the community which is often repelling new people by unnecessarily harsh comments.

In the past, the media complained that “anyone” can put “anything” into Wikipedia; today, after quality requirements have become more severe, they complain that too many articles are deleted. (Especially the German media have jumped on that train.) This is the result of the evolution of Wikipedia from a “project to create an encyclopedia” into an encyclopedia that, essentially, already exists and has to be maintained.

A lot of the problems of Wikipedia could be solved by opening only two doors to content alteration:
A) Reporting: If a reader finds something wrong in an article he can push a button and report that; Wikipedians will deal with the proposal similar to the questions nowadays sent to the “support team”. Polish Wikipedia already has a Reporting system. Of course, why compel someone to learn editing and Wiki syntax and stuff if he just wants to report a typo?
B) Joining: Make joining a real procedure. Say hello to new people who want to join, accompany their first steps. Should they fail they cannot complain that there was nobody to help them.

This two-way-system or dual system could prevent a lot of vandalism, improve the friendliness towards new people (simple vandals and trolls will be filtered away very soon) and still benefit from the input of readers, maybe even better.

Alas, I am afraid that a lot of old Wikipedians would detest this dual system as “the end of the wiki, the end of openess”. It takes only a look at pages such as the articles for deletion log to see that the openess defended does not exist.

The only place I find Wikipedia to not be such a great resource is when it comes to medical-related topics. It's often that I notice huge inaccuracies and a lack of sufficient data when it comes to (seemingly) most medical-related topics; one good example is the Wikipedia article on Asperger's – it simply doesn't delve deep enough into what Asperger's really is. The Wikipedia article on Asperger's is definitely not the first web-page I want people to check out when I want to give people insight into what Asperger's really is like. I won't elaborate on what the article lacks, but one thing is that it doesn't even mention 'stimming' anywhere on the page, which is a huge flaw in my opinion.

So if you visit Wikipedia that often, you’d probably see that it wants people donating again. And can you guess how much they want off people in the US? You guessed it! 7 million dollars! A couple of months ago, Wikipedia wanted us to donate $6m, to keep their site alive. Now it doesn’t tell. Are you really sure they need millions of dollars just to keep Wikipedia alive? Or do they just want money from people so that they can swim in a bathtub in it?

As you can see, I have a photo of the Wikipedia logo, along with it’s slogan “The free encyclopedia.” Now define “free” since we have to donate. First of all, most of us people just go on that website to learn, research, or follow the curiousity of their heart’s content, not to pay just to view or read something simple. Second, give us a reason why do you want the money and what you’re gonna do with it, besides people and technology, such as “Who?” and “What type of technology?” You guys have no more than 35 employees running the company in the last 8 years, I don’t see why you need to much money just to continue. And third, dude, the economy is in a bad state. Try again in like… 100 years.

TRAI has finally done something really useful! It has managed to introduce mobile number portability

TRAI has finally done something really useful! It has managed to introduce mobile number portability, which basically means that you dont need to change your mobile no. everytime you get a new SIM.

This will definitely come as a relief to all mobile users out there. India after all is acknowledged as the fastest growing mobile phone/wireless market, and perhaps its only appropriate that we had some of the cutting edge facilities users in many other countries enjoy. Quite surprisingly however our next door neighbour, Pakistan, seems to have caught the portability train earlier than us (way back in 2007)! [Source - Wikipedia]

As per the new rules, you need to pay upto Rs.19 (dont expect it to be anything less than that!) for the transfer (which is quite reasonable I think). Also you need to hold on to your service provider for 90 days (again, pretty reasonable I believe). What this will do is increase the competition among operators who will have to dish out some pretty customer friendly offers to hold on to their customer base. For instance, since Vodafone has discontinued its ‘unlimited GPRS’ aka Vodafone Live net-on-phone pack, I’m planning to take full advantage of this offer and switch to Aircel, which apparently has an unlimited GPRS plan for just 98 bucks!

At last we are free from the clutches of crappy offers! w00t!

1. The United States used to be so badass that we used the Nazi’s own postal service to delive

1. The United States used to be so badass that we used the Nazi’s own postal service to deliver anti-Hitler propaganda with Operation Cornflakes.

Operation Cornflakes was a World War II Office of Strategic Services PSYOP mission in 1944 and 1945 which involved tricking the German postal service Deutsche Reichspost into inadvertently delivering anti-Nazi propaganda to German citizens through mail. The operation involved special planes that were instructed to airdrop bags of false, but properly addressed mail in the vicinity of bombed mail trains. When recovering the mail during clean-up of the wreck, the postal service would hopefully confuse the false mail for the real thing and deliver it to the various addresses.

2. Terrified that a waiter will/won’t take/leave your entree/salad? Learn the silent service code.

The silent service code is a way for a diner to “talk” to servers during a meal without saying a word, mainly to tell them that the diner is finished. This will prevent any embarrassing situations where the server would take a meal prematurely. To tell a server you are finished (only a cut of meat is ‘done’), place your napkin to the left of your plate, and place all your utensils together in a “4-o’clock” position on your plate. Utensils crossed on a plate signify that a diner is still eating. If you must leave during the meal, you should place the napkin on your chair to avoid any confusion.

3. If you speak English a ticking clock sounds like “tick tock.” If you speak Korean it sounds like “ddok-ddak ddok-ddak.” These are called “cross-linguistic onomatopoeias.”

Because of the nature of onomatopoeia, there are many cross-linguistic cognates of onomatopoetic sounds. The following is a list of some conventional examples: [including car horns, kissing, pigs, balloons bursting, and water dripping]

4. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to go over your knowledge of Norse mythology. Bone up on some Odin, peruse some Valhalla, and make sure you’re prepared for some Ragnarok.

Norse mythology has its roots in Proto-Norse Iron Age Scandinavian prehistory. It flourishes during the Viking Age and following the Christianization of Scandinavia during the High Middle Ages passed into Scandinavian folklore, some aspects surviving to the modern day. The mythology from the Romanticist Viking revival came to be an influence on modern literature and popular culture.

5. Sometimes it’s comforting to remember that the hedonic treadmill means we can never really be as happy as we want to be. Or maybe “comforting” isn’t the right word….

Brickman and Campbell coined the term “Hedonic Treadmill” in their essay “Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society” (1971), which appeared in M.H. Apley, ed., Adaptation Level Theory: A Symposium, New York: Academic Press, 1971, pp 287–302. The theory has consequences for understanding happiness as both an individual and a societal goal. The concept was modified by Michael Eysenck, a British psychology researcher during the late nineties, to refer to the hedonic treadmill theory which compares the pursuit of happiness to a person on a treadmill, who has to keep working just to stay in the same place. Humans rapidly adapt to their current situation, becoming habituated to the good or the bad. We are more sensitive to our relative status: both that which we recently have and that which we perceive others to enjoy.

I received a message this week from one of the groups I am a member of on LinkedIn. The message was sent to all members and included a roundup of the organisers activity and then finished by requesting that all group members start participating in the conversation and stop lurking!

According to Wikipedia a lurker is someone who joins online groups and frequently reads posts, blogs and articles but rarely, if ever comments or participates in the conversation and lurkers make up approximatelt 90% of a groups following. So why are lurkers keen to follow groups and read posts but not so keen to add their own views and comments?

Asking around it seems that people are happy to lurk and read articles without always feeling the need to continually express their own point of view. To add a comment you often have to divulge some personal information, which can be off putting and they do not want other members or the world to know their thoughts.

Businesses or groups can utilise the statistics and analysis from website traffic reports which give a clear indication on the number of visits and which articles are most frequently read, so does it matter if your followers don’t feel inclined to comment?

I have joined several groups on LinkedIn and some provide many benefits, but there are others who send out messages trying to sell their skills or business, this is extremely off putting and doesn’t add any value to the rest of the group. Engaging content and conversation keep a group or community following going and entices other members to participate, but if some members are not mindful of the content they submit other people will switch off , delete the messages or leave.

Receiving this message did not kick start me in to adding my views and comments, it did however make me decide to stop lurking and look for an alternative group to join.

If you like lurking online I would love to hear from you…………but I guess this is unlikely as you are comfortable reading but not commenting, so fair enough and Carry on Lurking!

Today, after all of you have seen the final of my favourite TV-show of all time at my 21st birthday,

Today, after all of you have seen the final of my favourite TV-show of all time at my 21st birthday, on May 6th this year, I did it too. “My Finale” sets an impressive dot at the end of this wonderful series.

Since the first time on air in Austria and Germany, I’ve watched every episode I was able to. And with all this endless reruns while waiting for the next synchronized seasons, I know can say, that I’ve really seen every episode. And because I didn’t want to wait again some weeks and months ’till the start of the eight season here, I watched Scrubs on the Internet.

Season 8 is really great. One of the best, I think. So many crazy, funny things happens, so many patients to feel with. So many J.D./Turk – fun. All about love, feelings, life and at least: growing up.

Maybe that’s the reason I love this series. Maybe just because it’s just like “Garden State”. A nice, wonderful, breath-taking growing-up thing.

As I’ve read on Wikipedia, ABC comes up with a new season. Renewing nearly the whole cast, planning 13 episodes for season 9, it seems, that they really want to set up a whole new series under the name of “Scrubs”. On December 1st 2009 Scrubs starts again with a double episode “Our First Day Of School” and “Our Drunk Friend”. I don’t know how it will be, but hey: If you see the first episodes of the new season, tell me how they are.

Karen led a discussion in class last week as to whether Google is making us stupid. Well she started

Karen led a discussion in class last week as to whether Google is making us stupid.

Well she started it off by giving us a link to this article (by Nicholas Carr).

It is approximately 4000 words long and we were suppose to read it. Not only is the article lengthy, but it’s going on and on about nothing! So… none of us actually bothered to read it. And that was precisely the point Karen was trying to make.

With search engines and online encyclopedias providing almost all the information we require, it is hard to not rely on them. I personally turn to Google for almost everything. Weather, currency converter, research, people-finding, news… everything!

Karen pointed out that with the internet, people lose their patience and ability to analyze. Whatever happened to browsing through library books and the newspapers? With the internet, there is always an easier way to do things online. So… is that making us stupid?

I agree that I didn’t have the patience to read the article and if I could, I would just google “Nicholas Carr’s article summarized”. I also must admit that a lot of research done for schoolwork, has just been cutting and pasting paragraphs from Wikipedia and other sites.

However, I don’t think the internet is making us stupid. Maybe we have lost the ability to read through library books to find what we want. But at the same time, we have gained convenience and efficiency. Searching through millions of books at the library vs. typing what you want in the search bar, it might be a difference of hours! And in the world today, everything needs to be quick. Everyone has datelines to meet. So who has the time to make their way to the library, browse the books, scan them and bring them home?

I believe, with the speed and extensiveness of the internet, it definitely brought about a greater gain. Even if it means losing my patience, ability to read a lot and to search for my own information offline, I think I would still choose the internet. Not only does it provide me with what I want in the shortest possible time, it also provides me with graphs, statistics, pictures and links to other relevant sites so I can do the necessary cross-referencing.

Therefore, the internet didn’t make me stupid. In fact, it enhances my search and allows me to get even more information than what I wanted. In fact, it has always been great great help

What about you? Has the internet brought you more gain, or loss?
