With the widespread use of wiki now is possible to use in the field of training and education. Wikis can be a helpful web page in both education and training. First potential of uses wikis in education or training that wikis allow groups to cooperate in the subject of discussion or project. All members can add information and edit each other information when they work in the same group. Second potential is teachers can use it for discussion. For example, teachers can post questions for students. Then, the students can post the answer and can share their own ideas. Also, wikis can help students to ask their teachers or trainers or the teachers can use it to leave advice for the students.
Wiki has many advantages and the real advantage is saving all edits. In other words, documents will never be missing by other people edits. Also, students can share ideas and discussion with trainers and teachers and groups can update and change information. The third advantage of using Wikis is that you do not need to be in class when you want to share your own ideas.

Originally uploaded by Heaven`s Gate (John)

Thanks to some comments and feedback and the chance to “think outloud” about what I really wanted for my project, I have decided to use a wiki format as the main hub for all my work, and then branch out from there to my blog for the reflective pieces, links to resources, etc. I am finding my time this weekend putting some meat to the site has been fairly easy going and wikispaces is quite easy to work with. However, with that said, I am finding it does have its limitations – namely that I am unable to find easy ways to move text and pictures around the page and have been frustrated at times with that. I think the only way around it is to select the alignment for the picture and text separately. Too bad they did not have text boxes that could then more easily wrap around images.

Here is the link to what I have designed so far – http://connectedpro-d.wikispaces.com/

If any of you have a few minutes to provide some feedback as to what you think might be improved (other than getting some content onto most of the pages!) I would welcome any feedback. I set it for PUBLIC so that anyone is welcome to edit each page – please add any links or resources you know of that apply to each area and let me know what you think so far. It is a mammoth project, I am finding out, and clearly the first steps in a career-long endeavour. But you have to start somewhere, and it is in this project where I can see the benefits of SHARING and COLLABORATION as others come in, give a bit of what they know, and take also what they can.

If you know of any other similar sites that might be a resource for me to look at for formatting ideas, ways to display links, document files, etc, I would love to see them. My idea is to try and get not only static links, but also embed some media on as many of the pages as I can. This will be my ongoing work now, as it feels like it is set up roughly the way I want it for now…. until I see something better and get ideas from other places. I really wanted to add images to each page to help bring in some interest rather than just links, as that is boring. That took A LOT of time – much more than I thought it was going to. But I also am easily distracted by all the amazing art work out there!

Wish me luck!

For the record, I LOVE Wikipedia! I think the whole idea of a collaborative encyclopedia is awesome. Once I go on Wikipedia, I can’t seem to get off for hours. You search one thing, then another, then another…
I think the thing about Wiki’s is that you really can’t use the information for academic purposes, despite the fact that all the information is checked first before it is added. I like to use it as a starting point for information on a particular topic, and then research it more indepth using books and verified websites. When we did our Charles Darwin display, I looked him up on Wikipedia to get a basic overview before I went on to study him with the resources at the library.
Using Wikis in libraries is a great idea – the ones listed are a fantastic way to use the technology, and our ones at CityLibraries are pretty good too =)
I think in the future we can really benefit from creating and using Wikis here at CityLibraries in the future. Trish’s Wiki is just the start!!
…I have just received confirmation that I can access our Wiki so I’m off to start posting!!

Rumours began to circulate on Twitter yesterday that another UK construction industry magazine was set to close, and today I read Andy Pearson’s “And Finally…” conclusion to his December 2009 online editorial in UBM’s Building Sustainable Design (BSD):

This is the last issue of Building Sustainable Design. After almost a year of trying to succeed in a difficult commercial climate, BSD is to cease publication.

A sustainable built environment is as important now as when BSD was launched 11 issues ago, and its publisher UBM will continue to serve forward-thinking designers through our sister magazine Building. Its website, www.building.co.uk, will include an archive of the editorial content of BSD.

All that remains is for me to say a big thank-you to all who contributed to this magazine in its short life: in particular, everyone on the editorial panel and the next generation panel who gave their time so generously; the advertisers for their support; and most of all you, the readers, for your feedback and encouragement. I hope BSD has kept you informed and entertained….

This news comes in the same week as Contract Journal publishes its final edition after 130 years and also shuts its website and other online channels (see post), with the loss of six journalist jobs. This closure further reduces the number of print publications serving the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.

BSD superceded UBM’s Building Services Journal, which was discontinued last year when the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers decided it wanted to publish its own magazine, CIBSE Journal. As Tim Dwyer’s initial comment on Andy’s editorial suggests, there was obviously no room for two publications targeting essentially the same readers and the same advertisers:

The competition between BSD and CIBSE Journal was undoubtedly healthy (in quality terms) but no doubt contributed to the demise in these incredibly harsh economic terms.

Like Building, BSD has tried to embrace social media, and as one of the people engaged in its conversations, I will miss it. I followed its Twitter and RSS feeds, wrote an early contribution to its blog (reposted here), and also welcomed its wiki experiment: the BSD Project Wiki (I also monitored publication and website for one of my clients in the building services sector).

Hopefully, as Andy’s editorial says, some of BSD’s content will still be accessible through the Building website. In the meantime, there is no news of whether this closure will mean job losses at UBM – perhaps staff will be redeployed to cover building services news and features in Building, on www.building.co.uk and other online channels?

When a Body catch a Body

Originally uploaded by ms_quarantine

I liked this image as a way to capture my current frustrations around my final project this week. I usually enjoy spending a ridiculous amount of time putting jig saw puzzles together and am finding that creating the space I want to build for my final project is feeling much like it does when you first dump the box of pieces on the table and start sorting. You have a really good idea about what the final end picture or product should look like, and what components and pieces you will need to achieve it. But what is still nebulous and challenging is finding out which of those pieces need to be connected, and how they should be connected, in order for the entire thing to come together. This is where I am at with my final project. Let me outline the basic premise and then perhaps you might provide some ideas and suggestions to help me select the best pieces for the best fit.

Project idea: continue to expand and build upon ECI 831 blog space for professional development personally and for my work as a consultant to help support other teachers who want to connect to professional development readings, links, discussions and other content.

Rationale: I have to read professionally and respond to books in book circles, PLC groups and other areas. I could record my reflections and thoughts about what I was reading in this space, and invite other teachers in my division and world audience to also respond and participate, lessening the need to drive long distances to still participate and feel part of the conversation and learning.

I also am asked to locate and share resource links and materials with teachers in my division. I would like to do this work once, and then store these links in a more permanent fashion with others more effeciently and easily than by one-one emails.

I would also like to share my collaborative efforts and professional growth (required formally in my PGP and informally because I am interested in recording this in a more public way) with others in a more transparent way. Telling someone else and knowing that others are watching for results is a powerful motivator for me to actually carry out my plans and goals for the year.

1. Use the blogspace already created to act as my “homepage” and make more pages/categories to extend the topics, subject specific curricular areas and professional growth areas of interest beyond ECI 831.
2. Connect to other sites that do a better job of housing links and media (such as a wiki site for links that others can contribute to) and youtube channels for videos, etc.

As I am working at this, I am wondering of I should not use a wiki as the home page instead and connect out to the blog, as Alec has modelled with our course. Although basic and not as fancy, it does seem to offer more flexibility for linking to so many other forms of social media. Maybe it is just the blog site I have chosen, but the more I try and get indepth with wordpress, the more it is not working for me. I am feeling flashbacks of working with Joomla- not at all intuitive. Does anyone else feel the same way or have ideas about how I might piece together my parts for reflection on professional readings, useful links to websites and resources, and connections with media in a neat, tidy and efficient manner?

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of using a wikispace as the main hub, and branch out from there. It does allow others to add easily to the work in progress as they find things (kind of in keeping with the “find a penny, take a penny” container at the cashier…). I know I like to feel helpful and a contributor to someone else’s journey and not always be taking, taking, taking. That is the beauty of the wiki vs the blog. And am I right in thinking that not all parts of the wiki needs to be open to the world? That you can lock areas that you want to not be changed?? If so, then maybe this is the way forward?

Who has got the missing pieces of my puzzle? And if you have one, would you please share it?!

Wikis are websites that allow users to create and edit web pages. They are mainly used to create websites that are shared and can practically be modified by anyone who has acess to the internet. One example of a wiki is Wikipedia, if you visit wikipedia.com you will realize that you, the user can modify and add information to the website. There are many benefits to using wikis, one is that they can be used in the classroom to share websites with students or simply to have students organize and conduct research. If you are interested in finding free wikis simply visit www.wikispaces.com. You can also visit http://educationalwikis.wikispaces.com to find educational wikis that can be used in your classroom.

Wikis are revolutionary ways to create collaborative knowledge of free information. This knowledge can be created, edited, re edited by one or many knower. Up to now, there is access to wikis on an array of topics. There is free access to wikis in different areas. Such areas include but not limited to books, dictionaries, quotes, encyclopedias, etc. For instance, students in a classroom can create their own wiki by sharing their individual knowledge learned in a specific content area. Students will be sharing their thoughts; the teacher, however, will be responsible of checking the accuracy of information before making it available to everyone. The availability of the information may be school wide or may rest in the world-wide web ready for free use.

A wiki is a collaborative tool that allows multiple people to add/edit information as they see fit.

A wiki is a collaborative tool that allows multiple people to add/edit information as they see fit. The most popular wiki is probably Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia where anyone can contribute. The downside to wikis is obvious- if anyone can add anything, then nothing stops malicious pranksters from writing that Abraham Lincoln was a member of *NSync. The positives are that anyone, including hobbyists can contribute to a what is ultimately a collective effort.

Classroom wikis appeal to students’ sense of togetherness and cooperation. Utilizing a wiki in your classroom allows each student to bring his or her experiences and knowledge to the collective table. This can motivate students who are reluctant because, when using a wiki, students are dependent upon each other. Each student is responsible for his/her contribution.

A wiki also appeals to a student’s sense of vanity by allowing others to see what that student has written. Because of this, the quality of writing may be better and the student will put forth his/her best effort, knowing it will be read by everyone else in the classroom.

Wikis are great for building community in the classroom and ideal for allowing all students to contribute something.

I often write to express my thoughts and reflect on my profession, hoping to share and collaborate w

I often write to express my thoughts and reflect on my profession, hoping to share and collaborate with colleagues and peers. Today, I write in hopes to be heard. Today, I have been inspired to finally write this grand idea that has been brewing for quite awhile. It is in fact “dreaming big…”

I have been in the educational technology field for a few years now and have fully embraced the concept of web 2.0 as the 21st century way of learning. In the past three years, I have built a technology program at our school that embodies collaboration, problem solving skills and innovation. From my engineering class to our teacher professional development program (TEKA), our school has embraced 21st century learning. This year has been particularly successful as we have moved to a Google Apps environment for our collaboration efforts. The real time collaborative environment allows staff members to communicate more effectively and share knowledge to truly create a personal learning network (PLN). Our ever growing internal wiki has expanded ten fold with information and lessons tailored for our environment. I can safely say we are an empowered group of learners who understands self-directed learning in a collaborative environment.

With much success at our school, I have been inspired to see how this PLN can grow to our bigger charter network. Upon reflection, I couldn’t think of a better way to promote the web 2.0 concept than at our annual charter school conference. Having been inspired by collaborative efforts at other conferences, I thought using web 2.0 tools at our annual conference would be a game-changing idea.

Our annual charter conference brings together the brilliant minds and passionate educators from all over the nation. For the past three years, I have come away inspired and motivated to teach after our week of collaboration. However, I have come to the realization that despite the inspiration that comes from the conference, the knowledge and collaboration efforts that extend after the conference has been comparatively minute. I also come to realization that during the conference, the chances of more collaboration and instant reflections may not be fully materialized without using technology to drive the conversation.

Dreaming Big…

I remember going to a conference over a year ago where I was first introduced to Twitter and how it was used at the conference at that point was beyond my scope. However, having used Twitter actively now for the past three months, I finally put together the purpose of using Twitter at that conference and the potential impact it can have on information sharing. The concepts of web 2.0 has been around for many years now and trying to describe it here is not going to turn any heads.

Instead, I want to connect web 2.0 with our annual charter conference. I want to dream someday that our conference will utilize web 2.0 tools such as Twitter to spark conversations with true real time collaboration. I can envision being at one of the sessions and “tweeting” my reflections on the speaker and having another teacher responding to my thoughts in real time. I also see others learning from each other through the #conversations and archiving people’s topics and links. Moreover, having several active television monitors spread across the conference for people to learn and be in the “know” of what is going on at the conference. Active live “tweets” will take the conference into a whole new level of real time reflections, surveys, and polls. Using other web 2.0 tools such as wikis to archive and Poll Everywhere to get instant feedback will bring and keep new ideas into fruition. The best part of Twitter is that mobile technologies allow the individual to post their thoughts instantly through Internet ready phones or texting capabilities.

I dream of having having a booth (Adelante Cafe) with my students teaching teachers how to use web 2.0 technologies such as Twitter and Edmodo at the conference. It would be a sight to see my students helping the conference participants logging on Twitter and learning how to RT and create #edchats about our #kss10 conference. It would be a beautiful thing to see the power of the crowd produce content rather than just listening to content throughout the conference. In my humble opinion, it will greatly enhance the experience of the week as all teachers and staff members will feel actively involved, as they share out their reflections, ideas, and information in real time.

I write this idea inspired by one of our program’s important mottos of “Dreaming Big…”

We may be in a recession, but business has been booming in Oxford recently in one sector which is close to my heart … no, not bookshops (though there are still plenty of those) but chocolate and coffee shops. Hotel Chocolat is one Cambridge shop which I’ve been missing ever since moving back to Oxford, so I’m delighted that we now have our own branch on the High Street; similarly with the Fudge Kitchen, now open on Broad Street. The new Missing Bean coffee shop on Turl Street is reputed to be excellent, but it’s been so popular so far that I haven’t yet managed to get a seat there to confirm this for myself; and a new branch of lovely organic Green’s café has just opened on Queen Street — I know that’ll be good because I go to their St Giles branch all the time! (And if, as it seems, Green’s are slowly following long-time Oxford favourite G&D’s around the city, then hopefully we can look forward to an East Oxford branch of Green’s in the future….)

If you too have trouble keeping up, you might be interested to know that you can get an RSS feed of shops newly opened in Oxford from the Oxford OpenGuide wiki. And if you know of a shop that’s opened recently that isn’t on there, then why not add it? You don’t need to write a whole essay for your page to be useful — just fill in the basic facts and someone else (or you!) can always add to it later.

The OpenGuide does include opening hours for shops, but a new Opening Times wiki has also started recently. It makes it very easy to add opening times (I figure that even if nobody else ever looks at the data I add, it’s a useful way for me to keep a note of when the shops I use are open), and also easy to search for things which are open near you — ideal for those moments when you simply have to know where the nearest open coffee shop is!

I taught a Web 2.0 workshop to about 25 Illinois educators today. Most of the people in the room were school administrators, along with a few teachers. I used a wiki that I had created to teach such concepts as Blogging, Wikis, RSS, 21st Century Skills, Internet-based Surveys, Personal Learning Networks, and Screencasting.

Overall, I was quite pleased with how the day went, and I had so much fun working with this terrific group of educators. I hope that the participants took some good information home with them, and I really hope they will use the tools in their professional and personal lives. At the end of the day, I asked for some constructive feedback regarding the workshop, and what I read on their evaluations will definitely help me as I plan for the next time I teach this workshop in February.

Throughout the day, I was asked questions about the logistics of using Web 2.0 technology with parents and families. The participants of this workshop raised some very good points regarding the roadblocks they may face as they attempt to move to a digital form of communication with their school communities. I had trouble answering a number of their questions, and I have a lot to think about in the coming weeks and months.

I am posting this poll to see what people consider as the main roadblock educators encounter when attempting to use blogs, wikis, and other internet tools with students and parents. Please take a moment to answer the poll.

It is well worth a read for those concerned with preparing students for uses of technology that they might find in the workplace. It also deals with some of the issues that hold concern for users of wikis.

The wiki crops up in many companies’ internal discussions about process improvements and efficient collaboration, but it is often shot down because so few people have exposure to good models of what a really successful business wiki can do. Ars is here to help with a practical introduction based on real-world examples.

This is high praise indeed given Karen’s legendary knowledge and experience of all things related to business information. And the fact her website Business Information on the Internet has consistently come up first on Google, when searching for the term business information.

We have certainly noticed a great deal of additional content appearing since we launched it on 5 November.
