Comingsoon.net has posted the first pictures for Warner Bros. Pictures’ two new comic book adaptation films The Losers and Jonah Hex.

Jonah Hex opens up in theaters nationwide on June 18, 2010 and stars Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men), John Malkovich (Burn After Reading), Megan Fox (Transformers), Will Arnett (Arrested Development) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road).

Jonah Hex is about a scarred bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on liberating the South by raising an army of the undead in the Wild West.

The Losers opens in theaters nationwide on April 9, 2010 and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Idris Elba (Obsessed), Columbus Short (Stomp The Yard), Holt McCallany (Alpha Dog), Oscar Jaenada (Che: Part Two), Jason Patric (My Sister’s Keeper) and Peter Macdissi (Six Feet Under).

The Losers is about members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination after being betrayed and left for dead.

Iron Man 2 and Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux is penning a new draft of Space Invaders–not based on the video game. The original spec by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger is about an astronaut who goes into space to catch his girlfriend in the act of cheating on him with a fellow astronaut. Even better: Will Arnett is attached to star! 

The rom-com is being set up for Fox after the collapse of Fox Atomic, with Davis Entertainment (A Perfect Getaway, Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem) on board to produce. Theroux, an actor-turned-screenwriter, has a couple other projects on his plate including a comedy about air guitar competitions, which he may also direct according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Theroux also wrote the upcoming Danny McBride/James Franco medieval-stoner-comedy Your Highness.

I wasn’t home this weekend to liveblog the SNL, and mayhaps I’ll try to do it sometime early this week. But I saw about four minutes of an awful Jekyll & Hyde sketch, so I’m not looking forward to it.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief

Release Date: February 12, 2010

The latest in the long line of Harry Potter wannabe’s, this time directed by the useless twat who nearly sunk the HP franchise in the first place, as well as cinematic abortions Bicentenial Man and Nine Months.  I’ve never heard of this, and this trailer gives no indication as to what it’s about except for some kid that looks straight out of High School Musical riding in a presumably magic elevator to a village in the clouds.  The only saving grace is that it reunites Pierce Brosnan and Sean Bean for the first time since Goldeneye.  Opens the same day as The Wolfman. One guess which one I’ll be seeing.

Dear John

This one’s for Frankie, who as far as I can tell is Channing Tatum’s biggest fan and awaits his next flick like a kid awaits christmas.  Based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, who also subjected the world to ‘The Notebook’.  If you’ve ever had a girlfriend then you’ve had to watch that schmaltzy shitfest.  If you currently have a girlfriend or wife, I recommend dumping them of Febuary 4th 2010.  It’s the only choice of action if you want to avoid this dreck.

Three queries regarding this flick…  Has Tatum ever appeared in a flick where he isn’t in the military?  Who in their right mind decided Amanda Seyfried was attractive?  And why the bloody hell is Lasse Hallström directing this shit?

This is to coincide with Angels & Airwaves new album. I like A&A and all, but can someone watch this trailer and explain what the fuck this is?

♥ “Mammoth”

In this indie movie, Gael Garcia Bernal (“Y Tu Mama Tambien”) and Michelle Williams (“Brokeback Mountain”) play a couple whose lives start unraveling when Bernal flirts with infidelity on a business trip in Thailand.

The story also focuses on their live-in Filipino nanny, which is exciting since very few Filipino actors breakthrough in Hollywood. “Mammoth” even features subtitles for the actors speaking the Tagalog language. With more than 1,000 votes on IMDb.com, the film has received a 7 out of 10 rating.

♥ “Salt”

This espionage thriller was originally set to have a male lead, but when Tom Cruise (“Collateral”) dropped out of the project, the role was re-written for Angelina Jolie (“Girl, Interrupted”), naturally. Jolie is Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent, who is framed for a plot to murder the president. She must prove her innocence while on the run from authorities. Leaps unto buses ensue.

♥ “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”

Jake Gyllenhaal (“Jarhead”) stars in this adaptation of a video game where he, along with a princess (Gemma Arterton from “Quantum of Solace”), must stop a villain from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.

It sounds lame when you put it like that, but from the trailers, it looks like the film has a good dose of comedy. It’s even produced by powerhouse Jerry Bruckheimer (“Pirates of the Carribean”). Sir Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi”) and Alfred Molina (“Spider-man 2″) also star. Lionsgate and Relativity Media previously released a trailer for “Brothers,” which I posted here. This is the second trailer of the drama, which stars Tobey Maguire (“Spider-man”), Natalie Portman (“Closer”) and Gyllenhaal.  It’s better if you view it without reading a synopsis first, so take a look:

It’s based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel which tells of the end of the world. Hardly anyone is left but Viggo Mortensen (“A History of Violence”), Charlize Theron (“North Country”) and their son, newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee. Guy Pearce (“Memento”) and Robert Duvall co-star. Dimension Films has also released two trailers for this Oscar contender. They are distinctly different as one is more dreary than the other. Disney is going back to its roots with this animated movie. Beating the likes of singers Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, Anika Rose (“Dreamgirls”) as well as Terrence Howard (“Hustle and Flow”) and John Goodman (“Coyote Ugly”) voice the characters. A teaser trailer and full trailer below:

Here’s a film that’s been kept under wraps so much so that all IMDb.com states is this: “Corporations have developed a technology to enter dreams to extract information from certain people’s heads. A CEO (Leonardo DiCaprio) enters dreams and things begin to escalate, taking a turn for the worst.”

The buzz surrounding “Inception” is mostly due to its director, Christopher Nolan, who also did “The Dark Knight” and “Memento.” However, I’m watching it for one of my favorite actresses, Ellen Page (“Juno”). Marion Cotillard (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”), Michael Caine (Miss Congeniality”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Brick”) and Cillian Murphy (“Batman Begins”) are in it as well.

♥ “Green Zone”

Although it’s by the same people who brought us “The Bourne” movies, I think some would hesitate to watch it since it’s another war movie. Still, Matt Damon gives it some star power.

♥ “Invictus”

Damon is one hot commodity as he also stars in this Clint Eastwood film, otherwise known as an Oscar contender. Based on a true story, Damon plays the captain of a rugby team who is enlisted by Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) to win, thus, uniting the country. Prepare to hear Damon speak with a South African accent …

♥ “Gentlemen Broncos”

Some have have predicted that “Broncos” will be a cult hit, perhaps in the same vein as “Napoleon Dynamite.” (They have the same director.) “Broncos” is a comedy about a science fiction author who steals the idea of a student (Michael Angarano from “Will and Grace”) for his next book. Jennifer Coolidge (“Legally Blonde”) is also in the movie, playing Angarano’s mom.

♥ “A Single Man”

Colin Firth (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”) plays a gay man who tries to carry on after the death of his partner. Julianne Moore (“Children of Men”) joins Firth, who is a potential Oscar nominee. Based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel, I must say the trailer is pretty original. It eerily plays on with no words the entire time. The film itself received an 8.6 rating on IMDb.com.

♥ “New Moon”

As the second part in the “Twilight” saga, we find  Bella (Kristen Stewart) left to gather the pieces with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) since the vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) left her. This time around, Stewart finds herself among werewolves and vampire royalty, the Volturi.

♥ “The Book of Eli”

Denzel Washington (“Man on Fire”) stars in this action movie set in yet another future depicting the end of the world. To salvage what’s left, Washington has to protect a sacred book. Mila Kunis (“That ’70s Show”) co-stars.

♥ “Nowhere Boy”

I don’t know why, but this feels like the most refreshing trailer out of the bunch. ”Nowhere Boy” is John Lennon (newcomer Aaron Johnson) of The Beatles. It chronicles the band’s beginnings and Lennon’s life. Kristin Scott Thomas (“Life as a House”) is part of the supporting cast.

♥ “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus”

Perhaps better known as Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) last film, Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) strikes a deal with the devil, trading in his daughter at the age of 16. Parnassus tries to rectify his mistake by offering his daughter’s hand in marriage to whoever can help him. Jude Law (“Closer”), Colin Farrell (“Minority Report”) and Johnny Depp (“Blow”) all stepped in to finish Ledger’s role.

♥ “When in Rome”

In this romantic comedy, Kristen Bell (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) takes some coins out of a fountain only to have the men who threw them in fall for her. The lovesick puppies include Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”), Will Arnett (“Blades of Glory”), Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”) and Bell’s real-life beau, Dax Shepard (“Baby Mama”).

♥ “Dear John”

Another Nicholas Sparks’s book, another movie adaptation. By now, I should know better than to fall for Sparks’s sap, but the trailer was enchanting. Channing Tatum (“Stop Loss”) and Amanda Seyfried (“Nine Lives”) fall in love, but Tatum, a soldier, has to return to war. *Tear*

♥ “Pirate Radio” (aka “The Boat that Rocked”)

Richard Curtis, the man behind the darling “Love Actually,” brings a new movie to the big screen. The film already has more than 11,000 voters rating it 7.6 out of 10 stars. “Radio” is a comedy about DJs who air their show on the high seas. Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Doubt”) joins the ensemble cast.

♥ “The Messenger”

IMDb users give this movie 8.6 stars. “Messenger” centers on the soldiers, Woody Harrelson (“Zombieland”) and Ben Foster (“Alpha Dog”), who are tasked with notifying the loved ones of their fallen comrades. Things are complicated when Foster gets involved with a soldier’s widow. Acclaimed actresses, Samantha Morton (“Minority Report”) and Jena Malone (“Stepmom”), round out the cast.

♥ “Alice in Wonderland”

This Tim Burton film hasn’t been released yet, but it’s already won an award. “Alice” was proclaimed the Most Anticipated Fantasy Film at the 2009 Scream Awards. If that still doesn’t convince you to see it, Oscar nominees Anne Hathaway (“Rachel Getting Married”) and Depp are in the movie.

Les films d’animation infantiles de ce genre sont vraiment loin d’être mon truc. Bien que je doive avouer avoir bien rigolé devant Shrek ou Madagascar, je m’excite rarement devant leurs bandes-annonces. Ce qui me gène dans ces films “aussi-bien-destinés-aux-enfants-qu’aux-adultes”, c’est qu’ils sont completement régressifs en terme d’humour, et pas régressifs “ha-ha” comme The Hangover avec les blagues de culs et les trucs d’attardés mentaux, mais régressifs “hum” avec blagues de merde, et gags peaux de bananes. Et si voir un type tomber et se faire mal me fait rire dans la réalité, il en va différemment lorsque j’ai affaire à un personnage animé en images de synthèse.

Or ce film se pare d’un tel casting, que je me dois de montrer ce trailer, qui annonce un film débilitant au possible, mais probablement prometteur en terme de box office, qui est prévu pour l’été 2010.

Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson

Susan: Did you see how strong I was!?  There’s probably not a jar in this world I can’t open!

On her wedding day, Susan (Witherspoon) is hit by a meteorite which causes her to grow into a giant.  She is captured by the government and imprisoned along with 4 other monsters that have been caught.  When a humongous alien robot shows up looking for the very substance that turned Susan into a giant, she and the other monsters are called upon to help destroy it.

While this movie may not be as witty or enthralling as most of the Pixar movies, I still enjoyed it for its visuals and original idea.  In fact, the idea is so good, I think that any disappointment I felt was because I think an even better movie could have been made.  It probably could have been a little more imaginative, especially when it comes to the Aliens.  The alien leader is kind of dull, and the giant robot he sends initially doesn’t have much personality either.

The monsters are pretty good, though.  Seth Rogen was particularly funny as B.O.B., the amorphous blob of goo who constantly demonstrates that he has no brain.  I think his voice was much more suited for this character than it was for his character in Kung Fu Panda.

What was with the human faces, though?  I thought the proportions and expressions were borderline creepy at times.  Actually, I’m quite certain they were.  Especially early on, at the wedding.

As I mentioned, it might be funny at times, but it’s not a hilarious movie.  This adds to it feeling a little overlong (even though it’s only 94 minutes in length), especially in the second half.  But at least their are those nice visuals to take in.  I especially enjoyed the view as the military helicopters approached the giant alien robot.  Cool stuff.

Overall, this won’t be topping my list of favorite computer animated movies, or even cracking the top 5, but it’s an enjoyable ride while it lasts.  Just don’t count on it being one you’ll want to get back in line for after it’s over.

Brains are overrated.

10 – 1.2 for lacking some in the funny department – 1 for dragging a bit in the second half – .4 for the aliens being kinda dull = 7.4

Arrested Development

IFC, is one of my favorite TV stations. There’s always great independent movies to watch .   Now, on Sunday and Tuesday nights, IFC is airing Arrested Development (one of my favorite TV shows ever).  Arrested Development originally aired from 2003-2006. I actually own the first season on DVD, and I watch the episodes over and over.

“Arrested Development is one of the smartest and funniest shows of the last decade with a hilarious presentation of absurd family dysfunction,” said Jennifer Caserta, executive VP/General Manager of IFC. “It’s a perfect fit for IFC, which viewers recognize as an authority on what’s new, next and relevant in television, film, music, gaming and online, and, more recently, comedy.” *

Apparently, a feature script is in the works! Yay! But until then,  you can watch the 53 TV episodes on IFC or Hulu.

“Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space”

Just when you thought everything from our childhood was dead. Last night I got to see something I’d never thought I’d see again, a Holiday Special! You remember those don’t you? I’m not talking about Rudolph or Frosty. No, I’m talking about when stars of the Saturday Morning lineup hit primetime with a special holiday tale. Only this time it’s not Saturday Morning answering the call, but rather Hollywood, more specifically DreamWorks Animation. Last night the cast of Monsters vs. Aliens, re-teamed for a half-hour Halloween special, the first of many hopefully. The best part of this is that the original cast of voice talent got back together; so this is not one of those let’s just throw something together projects. DreamWorks Animation is doing it right.
In the special, we find the Monsters getting ready for Halloween, when an alien spaceship makes a quick pit-stop in Modesto, to dump their waste in a pumpkin patch. When the Monsters arrive to investigate, they quickly discover that the pumpkins are starting to come to life. It’s short and sweet, but one thing is for sure. Thanks to DreamWorks Animation, the Holiday Special is now back for a whole new generation. Also look for their Christmas special featuring the cast of Madagascar, in Merry Madagascar this winter.

Reruns of the best sitcom in the past ten years, in my opinion, Arrested Development will begin airing on the Independent Film Channel starting October 25.  Each week the channel will air two episodes, one on Sundays and one on Thursdays.

This is awesome news as far as I’m concerned.  Arrested Developmentt is one fo the few shows that I can watch over and over again.  Here’s the full report from Reuters:

The Independent Film Channel has picked up the rights to air “Arrested Development” and plans back-to-back airings on Sunday and Tuesday nights starting October 25.

The former Fox comedy has aired on HDNet and G4, in addition to being offered online via MSN.

The Emmy-winning show, whose three seasons originally aired from 2003 to 2006, centers on a formerly wealthy and highly dysfunctional family. Its ensemble cast included Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Jessica Walter, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor.

Alright. So I’m starting to get a bit sick of writing and reading about the same movies all the time – especially when we’re talking about current movies. Yes, There Will Be Blood and The Dark Knight are amazing movies. But to make things a little more interesting, I’ve decided to start reviewing less well-known movies. Here’s my review for the 2007 indie film, Wristcutters: A Love Story.

Wristcutters: A Love Story examines the idea of purgatory for those who have attempted suicide. After slashing his wrists, Zia (Patrick Fugit) finds himself in a place that is much like earth, but merely a little more bleak and depressing. In the afterlife, he meets up with a self-destructive musician, and a girl, Mikal, who claims she is there by mistake. When Zia hears that his ex-girlfriend has also killed herself, the trio goes on a road trip in hopes of finding her. When they stumble across a mystical campsite run by a thespian (Tom Waits), things in the movie really take a turn for the weirder. Will Arnett even pops up in a really bizarre (and wildly miscast) role before the film finally finds a way to come to a satisfying conclusion.

Wristcutters is a thought-provoking, interesting film, but it suffers a bit from the odd, plot-heavy second half. I feel that the human interest slant of the film’s beginning was its stronger suit. One of the best scenes of the film takes place when Zia goes to dinner at his musician friend’s house, and discovers that his friend’s mother, father, and younger brother have also “offed” themselves, and they are all now living as a (sort of) happy family in this semi-Hell. This kind of black humour runs rampant through the entire film, and many scenes are genuinely funny. The aforementioned “love story” aspect is also very cute, and helps to lighten up the slightly cumbersome second half.

Though Patrick Fugit plays a character that is similar to his work in Almost Famous, I think Fugit does a great job here. Zia is very likeable, but also a bit of a sap, and Fugit probably plays a loveable fish-out-of-water better than any other actor his age. His wry delivery suits the film’s black humour, and I have to give Fugit a lot of credit for making grim subject matter unexpectedly fun. Strong supporting performances make the absurd story seem believable, as does the beautiful cinematography. The shots of the stark, depressing “American” landscape manage to be off-putting and beautiful at the same time.

The film itself is rather contradictory, and it seems like that’s its purpose. Suicide is shown in a very vivid way (we see exactly how many of the characters wound up in purgatory), yet the whole thing seems a little bit humorous, and almost beautiful. That’s not to say that the film glorifies suicide, but it takes a stance on it that’s both light-hearted and bleak, and manages to pull it off. The storyline about cult-ish religious fanaticism has been done to death (no pun intended), so that aspect seems less fresh, despite the fact that the film is examining it from the other side of the mortality line.

Wristcutters is not a perfect film, but it has so many positive attributes that a dud character here or there (sorry, Will Arnett. You’re still awesome.) and a bit of plot trouble doesn’t hold it back too much. The film’s really unique feel, along with great performances, make Wristcutters a must-see for anyone who enjoys offbeat movies, or who is just sick of the blandness that Hollywood usually offers up.

I have to admit, I wasn’t as keen on 30 Rock towards the end of last season as everyone else seemed to be. However, I was excited to check out the first two episodes of season four, aptly titled “Season Four” and “Into the Crevasse.”

Season Four centers around TGS becoming more relatable to the general public. Each cast member plays a part in this plan (concocted by Jack of course). Jenna becomes a country singer, Tracy tries to make friends with “commoners,” and Liz and Pete are sent on a mission to find a new cast member. Liz and Pete end up getting caught sneaking out together, which results in a hilarious scene with Pete’s wife (played by the former SNL writer, the lovely Paula Pell). Meanwhile, Kenneth leads a page strike. This episode had a few hilarious moments, but overall, it came across as very meta. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the opening scene involves some of the cast eating in an Asian Fusion restaurant called “Season Four.”

Into the Crevasse centers around Devin (guest star Will Arnett) trying to sabotage Jack and his career. In addition, all of the cast is angry at Liz over a book she wrote. Will Arnett is incredibly hilarious in this role. There was even scenes where he was hanging out with the Obama children (you’ll have to watch to find out why). I enjoy the interplay between Alec Baldwin and Will Arnett, which is what made this episode very enjoyable and funny. It was a definite improvement over the season premiere.

I love the cast of this show, and I think they are all incredibly talented and hilarious. But sometimes, week to week, the show can be a bit over the top. However, the 2nd episode was a huge improvement over the first, so I hope that it will continue to improve throughout the season.

Everyone famous is in this movie.

Start with a brilliant David Foster Wallace collection.  Add an obsessed college student’s passion for the work, a cast consisting of everybody ever, and funding from IFC, and what do you get?

Something weird.John Krasinski, best known for his role as Jim on The Office, was so intensely moved when he read these stories that he was determined to adapt them for the silver screen.  Thus he makes his debut as a director, having written the script and also played one of the starring roles.  The cast includes Will Forte in an unfortunately minor but perfectly hilarious role, Will Arnett as a huge douchebag a la (any other Will Arnett role), and Julianne Nicholson as The Depressed Chick.

Well, there’s no cut-and-dry way t0 decide on this one.  The film moves at a strange pace, due to the way it’s cut up into chunks around different characters’ storylines.  Sometimes it will go from a burst of frenetic action into a long, slow monologue, and sometimes Krasinski will make a few really strange directorial choices that leave you wondering what just happened.  In particular, toward the end there are some really wonky bits that threw me for a loop.  This, of course, would be the expected evidence of K’s greenness-behind-the-ears.

The strongest moments in the film were when Krasinski allowed the camera to rest on one person long enough for them to get out their whole story.  These moments, which were fairly abundant, could actually be profoundly moving.  Sometimes the dialogue’s pacing was a little strange, since it’s mostly adapted directly from text (leaving some characters talking as though they were characters).  But the delivery was generally good enough that it justified whatever weirdness was in the writing, with a few exceptions.

The main downside is, predictably, when the direction comes into play strongly enough that it’s noticeable and distracts from the storytelling.  In a film so centered on the inner worlds and taboos of its characters, flashy cuts become too much.  Unfortunately, there are a good amount of them.

Brief Interviews is a movie about the things that scare the hell out of modern men.  It follows what makes us do the shitty things we do.  I’d say if that sounds interesting to you, you may as well take the chance on the movie.  Don’t be expecting any feats of technical prowess.  Do expect some great storytelling.

“Arrested Development” foi aquele tipo de série que logo que estreou a gente sabia que seria cancelada logo logo. E nem porque era ruim, pelo contrário, era sensacional. Só que não tinha vampiros, gente perdida, médicos irônicos ou ex-estrelas de Hollywood.

Pra quem não se lembra ou nunca viu, “Arrested…” (ou “Caindo na Real” na TV aberta) contava a história de uma família completamente desestruturada, que passa por uma crise financeira e por situações vergonhosas, depois que o patriarca vai preso. Ela era filmada como se fosse um falso documentário e revelou Jason Bateman e Michael Cera (ambos estão em “Juno”).

Os boatos da adaptação para o cinema começaram logo que ela acabou, em 2006 (depois de três temporada), mas nada havia sido confirmado até o Hollywood Reporter divulgar o anúncio de que o criador da série, Mitchell Hurwitz, e o produtor James Vallely já estão escrevendo o roteiro para o longa.

O mais legal é que Hurwitz havia dito que só adaptaria “Arrested Development” se todo o elenco topasse, então há chances de vermos Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor e Jessica Walter retomarem, ao lado de Bateman e Cera, a seus papéis na hilária família Bluth.

Como o roteiro ainda está sendo escrito, o filme não deve sair antes de 2011, mas a produção é da ótima Fox Searchlight, que só tem lançado ótimos filmes.
