En el año de nuestro Señor de 1995, cuatro amigos empezaron a tocar música juntos. Grady Avenell y Jeff Irwin ya lo hicieron en una banda llamada SOCK. Otros miembros de SOCK también tocaban en FAR, y debido a los compromisos tuvieron que hacer una elección. SOCK dejó de existir. Pero los dos amigos citados anteriormente continuaron tocando música juntos, y pidieron a otros amigos que se uniesen a ellos para formar una banda.

Grady Avenell a la voz, Jeff Irwin pasó de tocar la batería a tocar la guitarra, Mike Martin en el bajo y Wayne Morse dejó de tocar la guitarra en otra banda para tocar la batería sólo para estar en esta banda, el grupo se estableció. El nombre de un personaje de ficción creado por ellos mismos, el que pronto será poderoso… Will Haven había nacido.

Ese mismo año lanzaron una demo de seis canciones, tres de las cuales terminarom en el primer EP un año después. El EP fue autotitulado y contenía siete canciones llenas de emociones honestas, como la frustración y la ira. Sonaba punky, abrasivo y heavy como la mierda. Fue en este tiempo cuando Grady fue invitado en dos canciones de FAR; “9 Miles” y una versión de Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?”, que contaba también con Chino Moreno de Deftones.

Will Haven

Will Haven recibió el apoyo masivo de sus amigos los Deftones. Se puede ver a los miembros del grupo en el vídeo de Deftones para la canción “Bored”. Además, los llevaron de gira por los EE.UU., a través de Europa y el Reino Unido después de la publicación del primer álbum de larga duración llamado “El Diablo”. Cuando llegó a la escena fue defendido no sólo por los Deftones, sino también por Max Cavalera por nombrar unos pocos. Will Haven se recorre de arriba a abajo los Estados Unidos con bandas como la mencionada Deftones, con Earth Crisis e incluso con los Beastie Boys por nombrar sólo unos pocos.

En 1999 vio la luz el segundo álbum del grupo. Simplemente titulado “WHVN” (un anagrama del nombre de la banda), el álbum es un oscuro, pesado y complejo para entrar en él. La canción “Jaworksi”‘ lleva el nombre de su amigo Jeff Jaworski, líder del grupo posterior RED TAPE y “Slopez” es por Shaun López quien fue el guitarrista de FAR y SOCK.

Giraron a través de los EE.UU., Europa y Reino Unido ganando más fans cada día. En estos tiempos la banda grabó una versión para el disco homenaje a Bad Brains titulado “Never Give In”, en que aparecían también grupos como: Cave In, Downset, Entombed, Vision Of Disorder, Boy Sets Fire o -(16)- entre muchos otros. La canción que escogieron fue “The Regulator”.

En el año 2000, el que fuese el batería durante mucho tiempo Wayne Morse, dejó la banda, y mientras buscaban un sustituto, Chris Robeyn que tocaba en FAR, les ayudó en algunas hechas, pero sería Mitch Wheeler quien iba a ocupar el puesto de batería de forma permanente.

Después de un tiempo de descanso, en el que Grady apareció como invitado en un tema de Soulfly junto a Chino de Deftones titulado “Pain” del álbum “Primitive”. Ya era hora de grabar el tercer álbum. Después de hablar de que se iba a tratar de un álbum doble con un disco lleno de música ambiental, se convirtió en un solo cd que se publicó en 2001.

Carpe Diem fue un salto adelante para la banda a la hora de escribir canciones. Filmaron un vídeo para el tema título de pista, que en el Reino Unido se convirtió en un single que incluían dos temas en vivo en los estudios de grabación de la BBC y el vídeo en sí. En el vídeo parecen amigos como Chino y Jeff. Recorrieron los EE.UU., el Reino Unido, hicieron el Vans Warped Tour en Australia e incluso tocaron en Japón.

Después de volver y tomar un descanso, las cosas parecían ir bien. Hablaron de una nueva demo que haría la boca agua a los fans. Pero entonces, comenzó el goteo de malas noticias y a comienzos de 2003 los rumores se convirtieron en verdad; Will Haven se iban a separar. Para Grady, llegó el momento de empezar a hacer otras cosas con su vida.

El 24 de enero tocaron su último concierto en un pequeño café en su ciudad de Sacramento, California, llamado The Capitol Garage. Llegaron fans de todas partes de los EE.UU., de Australia, Alemania y el Reino Unido para despedir a la banda.

El show fue filmado por Brad Oates de Trainwreck productions y junto con un documental de sus viajes se encuentra disponible en el DVD llamado “Foreign Films”. Aunque la banda se había disuelto, tres de los miembros restantes continuaron haciendo música y con la adición del vocalista de Rey Osburn de Tinfed, Oddman de baterista y Cayle Hunter ahora a la guitarra, formaron Ghostride.

Pero entonces, a finales de 2005, algo que parecía imposible sucedió; William Haven volvían. Después de una conversación esperanzadora entre Jeff y Grady, la idea de “hacer algo nuevo” se convirtió en realidad. Empezaron a ensayar y escribir canciones.

Algunas de esas canciones aparecieron en su MySpace. Una progresión constante hizo posible un próximo EP y un próximo álbum y fans de todo el mundo se regocijaron. En 2006, la banda regresó a los escenarios, y después de unos pocos shows se fueron de gira con CROWBAR por el Reino Unido. Cayle Hunter se convirtió en segundo guitarrista por un tiempo, antes de dejarlo para centrarse en su nueva banda, Armed For Apocalypse. Lance Jackman de Eightfourseven (quién fuese técnico de Will Haven) está tocando la segunda guitarra en directo.

Durante el año la banda fue al estudio en Los Ángeles para establecer vías para su cuarto álbum, actualmente titulado “Hierophant” y la preparación para una gira con los Deftones en marzo y abril de 2007. Ayudar a la banda de amigos, Shaun López, Chino Moreno y Eric Stenman se ocuparon de mezclarlo.

Pero a principios de 2007 parecía demasiado bueno para ser verdad; Grady tiene que limitar su tiempo en la banda, dejando el escenario para asumir un trabajo con el que mantener a su familia.
La banda también se enfrenta a su pesar a tomar una decisión; Will Haven se terminó porque Grady dejó el grupo la última vez, pero como suele ocurrir, el sentimiento general era seguir adelante.
Grady seguirá siendo un miembro creativo de Will Haven, pero no es capaz hacer largas giras.Su amigo Jeff Jaworksi (también en RED TAPE) se ocupará del micrófono para Will Haven demostrado su fuerza en el escenario durante un show de Los Angelas donde se presentó la noticia.

There can’t be anyone who was a fan of metal in the 1990s that hasn’t seen earthtone9 dozens of times. Just off the top of my head, I can think of a fair few times I saw them:

Supporting Pulkas at the Reading Alleycat.
Watching them play at the horrendous Lost Weekend festival, where vocalist Karl Middleton performed wearing nothing but a pair of pants made of cling-film.
Supporting Soulfly at the Astoria, where Karl admirably provided the Grady Avenell vocal parts of ‘Pain’ (with Glassjaw’s Daryl Palumbo for the encore.
Outshining Disturbed (oh, I’d be ashamed if I paid for the ticket), as main support at their fist Astoria show.
Rumbling the shit out of the Zodiac in Oxford, which is now the Carling Academy Oxford (of which their support act will be the subject of a future blog…)
Supporting Kill II This, where Karl’s vocal warm-ups would ruin half of an interview I did with Mark Mynett for a fanzine I used to produce when I was but an idiot teenager.

And finally calling it a day with their last-ever show at the LA2. There’s probably a whole lot more that I can’t remember right now.

Despite ruining half of an interview with smeone else, I would later corner Karl and guitarist Owen Packard in a chilly corridor of the Astoria, right before they supported Fear Factory. I remember asking them why they’d become the Support Bnd Of Choice for, everyone, and they couldn’t really give me a straight answer. Sure, they were a considerable amount more talented than the competition, but why wasn’t that talent enough to propel them into the stage where they were perennial headliners instead of the warm-up guys?

So what happened after the split? Karl Middleton turned up in The Blueprint for a while, before going on to provide vocals for Twin Zero, although he appears to have slid off the map recently. You used to see him drinking in The Purple Turtle in Reading a few years back, maybe someone should go and ask him? Owen Packard did the six-string thing for a track for uber-group This Is Menace, and now runs a PR company, handling press duties for a number of UK rock acts. But everytime I get a bit nostalgic for the late 1990’s, I’ll stick on their final full-length album, arc’tan’gent, and think about what might’ve been.

So I’m checking my MySpace (brapp, brapp old skool 2006-style) and I see there’s a bulletin from Kerrang! Magazine – “Are we heading towards a Nu-Metal Revival?” Now this isn’t the first hooting about the return of nu-metal to reach me recently – for the last few weeks, Kerrang!’s Katie P has been mentioning it on her weekly XFM Rock Show. You can even email her and get put on a nu-metal revival mailing list, should you be that way masochistically inclined.

Now Nu-Metal has been a subject of constant revision and derision. In the year 2000, Kerrang! used the term as a catch-all description of a period of time, that of the post-KoRn metal revival. It wasn’t a specific genre at this time – they called Amen and Will Haven nu-metal, for fuck’s sake.

Over time this changed though, and like the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (unique in that it’s acronym, NWOBHM, takes longer to say than the full name) before it, what began as a description of a period of time soon became a description for the leading sound that the era produced. In this case: dross rap metal. The pointless turntables. The excessive – and badly delivered – rap vocals. The ludicrously down-tuned guitars. The wailing lyrics about childhood abuse at the hands of a pervert uncle, alternated with gratuitous macho posturing.

Now it’s “golden era” has passed, it’s easy to look back and laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. So many terrible, terrible bands had record deals thrown at them – Taproot, P.O.D, Papa-bloody-Roach.

There are still plenty of great acts that came out of that period – KoRn’s early records still hold up, as do those of Deftones, Slipknot, and a fair few others. Then there are a few commercial behemoths that rose – the generic metal of Disturbed, the mainstream-satiating safeness of Linkin Park, the bemusing-but-welcome rise of System of a Down from a quirky alt-metal act to a festival-headlining stadium act. Some of these acts survived the fall of nu-metal because of the quality of the records; others survived because they grew to become behemoths that can survive regardless of metal trends, fashions or fads. Do we really want to tempt the failures, those cringeworthy, sub-par, copycat crap-factories back into the public eye?

Why is this resurgence even able to gain any momentum? I’ll tell you why – for exactly the same reason that nu-metal disintegrated into a cloud of baggy shorts-wearing bum guff in the first place. Metal has merely moved from one trend to the next, gorging on a series of trends till it over-saturates itself with ever-decreasing returns.

Metalcore, Power Metal, Battle Metal, Hardcore – whichever genre the metal-mainstream diverts itself with, it cannot help but feast upon it till it destroys it. The metal world goes mental for Trivium, and we get Bullet For My Valentine, Black Tide, ad nauseum, taking up the slack. As shittier and shittier acts start to fill up the pages of magazine, the bandwidth of blogs and the video slots on TV channels, the closer it brings itself to destruction. Like the collapse of financial history that the world currently finds itself in, the metal world seems content to lock itself in a cycle of boom and bust, inflating its value on the credit of a thousand fads, with no thought paid to the price of the impending bust.

I.E., people demanding the return of nu-metal. Can everyone please just stop this madness now, while we still have a chance?

Mi piace iniziarla così questa recensione, magari a qualcuno potrà sembrare un azzardo, ma, personalmente, credo che in questi versi del “Sommo Vate del post-punk” sia racchiusa tutta la poetica e la grandezza stilistica di una band che è riuscita a scalare le più alte cime di quel macrogenere dall’ormai inflazionato nome di “Post-HardCore” (e non solo): i Will Haven.

Facciamo un attimo il quadro della situazione. 2008: mai come adesso, le sonorità più ricercate dell’hardcore hanno vissuto momenti di tale stallo artistico. Troppo spesso, per evitare di prender coscienza di ciò, si tende ad impreziosire con sottogeneri e mini-etichette le nuove produzioni al fine di non constatare che gli album di nuova uscita sono sempre più simili fra loro e “dichiaratamente vincenti”. Che sia una sintomatica perdita di coraggio artistico?

Proprio in questo clima di torpore generale i dischi che continuano a dettare i tempi conservano datazioni non proprio recentissime e perle come “Carpe Diem” restano difficilmente arrivabili dall’attuale e gettonatissimo “NeurIsis-style”. A sette anni dall’uscita, questo del 2001, resta il capolavoro assoluto della band di Sacramento. Preceduto dal peso “El Diablo”, 1997, (tralasciamo il non convincente “WHVN” 1999), “Carpe Diam”, matura i contenuti e perfeziona le basi dei suoi predecessori: la sublime intersezione di strutture noise e sonorità nu-metal si dipana su nere ragnatele prive di speranza e costruite con una maestria che “The Hierophant” (ultima fatica della band) non riesce neppure lontanamente ad avvicinare.
Poco meno di cinquanta minuti di cerebrale ipnosi che imbrigliano l’ascoltatore in un “percorso obbligato” tormentato ed oscuro da cui non puo’ sottrarsi; si procede dentro un tunnel fatto di scarne frustrazioni della contemporaneità metropolitana, cinicamente esposte in teche asettiche, ed urla traboccanti “d’isolamento esistenziale”. Dieci tracce tanto obiettive ed attuali quanto brutali, tanto hardcore quanto doom, tanto viscerali quanto fredde, tanto taglienti quanto avvolgenti.

Insomma un disco magistrale che si porta dietro tutto l’eredità di fine/inizio secolo fatta di Korn, Black Sabbath, Godflesh, Helmet, Nirvana, Sepultura, Bad Brains, Deftones, Coroner, Meshuggah, Unsane, Swans e perchè no… anche Joy Division.

Produzione eccellente, se “Carpe Diem” fosse stato un film avrebbe un montaggio da 10 e lode.
Al limite della perfezione.
