 A fall in Japan’s jobless rate pointed at recovery in the world’s number two economy Friday, but the government fretted that the surging yen could again derail the export-reliant economy.

Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii did not signal imminent plans to intervene in currency markets but stressed that Tokyo was watching closely and could take steps for the first time in five years if the situation worsens.

Fujii was speaking as the dollar traded around 85 yen, its lowest level since the mid-1990s, raising fears that Japanese exporters such as Toyota, Honda and Sony will lose competitiveness in overseas markets.

Using more strident language than usual, the minister said the yen’s rapid rise was “harmful”, a day after Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said the government must take measures to avoid a double-dip recession.

“If this kind of situation is sustained, I think that it would be something abnormal … it would be possible for us to take” steps under such conditions, Fujii said, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

“We should take appropriate action against disorderly movements in order to stabilise international financial markets,” Fujii said, adding however that he needed time to “look at the situation a bit more”.

Japanese shares fell 1.81 percent in the morning as traders worried the strong yen would hurt Japanese exporters.

Commenting on the Japanese currency’s rise against the dollar, Fujio Mitarai, the head of main business lobby Keidanren, warned that amid the gradual recovery “this could throw cold water on the economy”.

Japan, Asia’s biggest economy, sank into its worst post-war recession in the second quarter of 2008 as the global downturn devastated demand for its cars, electronics and other exports.

It gradually recovered this year, boosted by rebounding exports and stimulus measures, expanding in the July-September quarter by 4.8 percent on an annualised basis, the best growth in more than two years.

New jobs data Friday showed that the unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent in October from 5.3 percent in September, improving for a third consecutive month and beating market expectations of a 5.4 percent rate.

Another survey, by the labour ministry, showed there were 44 job offers for every 100 jobseekers in October, slightly up from 43 in the previous month. Related article: Japan’s jobless rate falls to 5.1pct

In other data suggesting a gradual rebound, average monthly household spending rose by a price-adjusted 1.6 percent in October from a year earlier, well above a rise of 0.6 percent the market had expected.

Renewed deflation, however, is still seen as a threat to the recovery, because falling prices hurt corporate earnings and dampen consumption as people delay spending in hopes of further price drops.

Japan’s core consumer prices fell 2.2 percent in October from a year earlier, marking the eighth straight month of drops, government data showed.

The drop in core prices, which exclude volatile fresh food, was slightly less than September’s 2.3 percent drop and in line with market expectations.

“Deflationary pressure remains,” even if the speed of price drops has slowed, said Hiroshi Watanabe, an economist at Daiwa Institute of Research.

“The economy has picked up since February thanks to an upturn in exports and production. The effect is now belatedly felt on prices and employment.”

But hhe warned: “If the yen rises further, it would dampen exports, which are the main driving force of the Japanese economy. It would weigh down the Japanese economy as its recovery is feeble.”

The holidays are around the corner and advertisements are now seen and heard everywhere – on radios, TV and online. Therefore, I decided to discuss about advertisements and marketing in North America. Yes, in North America, I noticed that the advertisements are not the same as what I grew up with. The ads here are intended to scare people into action. So, here is my rant about advertisements from my point of view.

Ethiopian Ads
Growing up in Ethiopia, I really enjoyed watching advertisements on TV. For instance, I remember a Pepsi commercial featuring Pele, the greatest soccer player of all time. We would watch the slow motion kick of Pele and how he enjoyed drinking Pepsi after the game. I and all my friends consumed so many bottles of Pepsi during our teens, just to imitate Pele. Yes, the ad worked for Pepsi. It was innocent – kids and grown ups fell for it.

Radio Talk Shows
The scary thing is, it seems that many people are unable or unwilling to draw the distinction between entertainment and information, and for them talk radio shows become less about entertainment and more about providing them insight. The type of insight which is based upon rumor, falsehoods, distortions and flat out lies. The type of insight which makes me question the true intelligence of the common man. The type of insight, which reaffirms my belief that the ignorant and the uneducated are easily influenced by those who are adept at preying upon fear.

I admit that if I’m near a radio, I will sometimes tune to talk radio to be entertained … but that is where it stops. I admit and recognize that talk radio exists for one true purpose, and that purpose is to entertain rather than inform. If you want to be informed you can listen to the news, if you want to be entertained (and you aren’t particularly interested in sports), you have talk radio.

On talk radio shows, you can hear how they believe one political party is the source of all that is evil and how if you don’t vote for the other party your children and grandchildren will be those that suffer. Time after time, after time, if you toss aside all of the fluff and excess, when you objectively look at any given subject you will find the basis is nothing other than fear. The pundits know if they can scare the listener, that listener will keep coming back for more.

Fear, Fear and Fear
Because when you really boil it all down, that is what it is all about … fear. You can listen to the programs themselves and hear about how a certain disease (say H1N1) or a specific government program are going to ruin our way of life.

Nowhere is this concept more obvious than the one time you would expect the theme of fear to be absent. I’m talking about the commercial breaks in between segments, and if you take some time to actually listen, you will soon discover that the advertisers have found a niche market, and that niche involves the concept of fear.

Millions upon millions of dollars in advertising are spent every year, and it is very obvious that those marketing firms know the true demographic listening to talk radio at any given point is one built upon fear – thus they cater to, and profit from, that demographic.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the list below of some of the advertisements presented during the commercial breaks of talk radio shows and TV programs.

• Alarm Force – appealing to the fear of burglary or home invasion.

• Tax Planning – appeals to the fear of Revenue Canada “stealing” money or leaving a person destitute.

• Various Gold Investing Firms – preying upon the loss of net worth in the stock market and retirement plans. Also suggests the apocalyptic scenario where paper money holds no value.

• Law Firms specializing in Personal Injury Lawsuits – Appeals to the fear that surviving family members might not be taken care of in the case of severe disability or *gasp* death. Also appeals the desire to hold someone or something else accountable for anything bad which might happen in one’s life.

• Life Insurance – again this appeals to the fear that loved ones won’t be financially secure if the primary bread winner is no longer around to provide.

• Carbonite Online Backup Software – appeals to the fear that a computer will crash resulting in the loss of financial data, vital documents, or irreplaceable files, photos etc.; encouraging people to sign up for their services.

• Medications – appeals to the fear that health problems (namely cancer) will end a life prematurely.

• Debt Management and Debt Collections services – appeals to the fear that ‘evil’ corporations will take all of a persons earnings leaving them with nothing.

• Legal Will – appeals to the fear that a person will die without a proper will or living trust being established. Also appeals to the fear the government will seize assets leaving surviving family members with nothing.

• Performance Enhancers for Men – making older men fear that they won`t be able to do it when the time is ready for action

• Financial Institutions – scaring people by saying … “in this economy” … in every sentence

So, as you can see, between disaster coverage, legal services, and various forms of self protection services, all of these products have one thing in common. They all appeal to some level of fear.

Now, if this were only a small percentage of the ads or if I cherry picked these ads over a period of two or three months, it might not be all that indicative of a larger issue, but the fact is every single one of these advertisements were heard within 90 minutes of talk radio. Not 90 days, not 90 hours – but 90 minutes. On other days, you might be able to hear the same ads or slight variations of them time and time again, and there were very few other ads that weren’t based in some way upon fear.

On the radio, I never heard a commercial about cleaning products, toothpaste, tea, coffee, gasoline or shampoo.

Conclusion
Time and time again, day after day, the vast majority of ads I ever hear pertain to fear, and the only logical conclusion that can be reached is that advertisers know the target core demographic that tunes into talk radio on a daily basis is scared. They might be scared about their finances or scared about their health or scared about the government, about home security, or maybe just scared about common sense or logic – but in some way these people are scared.

So, if the advertisers know it, doesn’t it make sense that the talk radio hosts know it as well? Don’t kid yourself – they know it, they count on it, and they prey upon it… that much is certain. So, maybe the next time you hear someone quote something direct from the mouth of a talk radio host, you should ask yourself … what are they afraid of?

Yes, I now think that you agree with me that fear sells!

Hurray! Thanksgiving is almost here. We are all going to Emily and Jeremy’s and we will gorge ourselves (except because of my half on Sunday I get to call it “carb loading”) and everyone will have a few days off. Well, Will and I will. Andy has to work all weekend but is taking Sunday off since I will be running for the first part and likely in a coma for the second. Friday Eli, Will and I are going downtown to pick up my race packet (number, shirt, etc) and do a little Christmas shopping. Saturday my friend Mike is coming over to watch the LSU game and then Sunday is the race. I have short runs this week, just three today and tomorrow then nothing until the race. Will went with me today and made it 2.3 miles before he called it quits. I was impressed at that because on short runs I do speed work so I was doing some hills pretty fast and he kept up for probably 2/3 of it.

Tonight I’ve made a pecan pie, Andy will get his dough for rolls ready, and Will is making oatmeal raisin cookies to take tomorrow. He’s getting quite into making his own cookies and we found a NY Times recipe that claims to be the “ultimate” chocolate chip cookie so he made the dough for that last night. It has to chill 24 hours so we’re all looking forward to it because (of course) we sampled the dough and OH MY. It was amazing. The cookies are topped with a little bit of sea salt before baking and I am very excited about them. I’m trying to encourage the baking in other directions by getting him to think of other things that he likes and we can figure out how to make those, too. He and I have also been talking some about meals he likes and tossing out the idea that he try his hand at cooking some dinners. He’s more excited about the cookies than the dinners at this point but he’s obviously pleased when he receives all the compliments on a job well done. It’s exciting to watch someone learn new things! I also get to eat freshly baked cookies == WIN.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! I know I have a lot to be thankful for this year.

Dear Will,

You are ten months old.  Every day, you are more amazing.  You are silly and smart and strong and beautiful.

You were recently evaluated by the Early Intervention Program and Abington’s neonatal follow-up clinic.  They’ve given us such good reports!  The EIP qualified you for physical therapy, but the therapist was shocked by how strong you are.

I thought I’d let the professional describe you this time.  Here are the therapist’s notes from her first visit:

“Will looks wonderful!  He sits with minimal support and uses both hands to play with toys.  He rolls to both his back and belly.  He stands beautifully with support and has great head and trunk strength for his adjusted age of 6½ months.  Will is using both sides of his body equally, turns his head to both sides and lifts both legs up and plays with a toy with both hands while lying on his back.  Will is making wonderful sounds.  Will is performing appropriate skills for his adjusted age.”

And her notes from her second visit:

“Will looks wonderful.  He sat for longer periods, used both hands to get a toy and participated in moving in and out of sitting.  He pushed up onto his hands and knees several times with very little help and rocked.  Will loves the other children!”

So you see, you really are doing a wonderful job.  You are getting bigger and stronger.  Your development is amazing.  Of course, it’s always remarkable to watch as babies progress, but I think the fact that you are progressing just like any other baby, with everything you’ve been through, is absolutely miraculous.

You started at a new babysitter’s this week.  You really like your babysitter Kate – the night we went to meet her you cooed and squealed and went to her like you had known her forever.  It’s a home daycare, with a lot less children, and I feel really good about having you there.  Daddy says you seem very happy there, and that makes us very happy.  Today you discovered a xylophone!  How wonderful is that!

You’ve started eating fruits and veggies – you look so cute with sweet potatoes smooshed all over your face and in your hair!  And you’ve been sitting up all by yourself, only toppling over occasionally.  You love to watch the cats – Zoe’s afraid of you (of course!), but I think Leela is fascinated by you.  When you’re playing on the floor, she sits under the coffee table – where you can’t get her and she feels safe – and she watches you.  And once you notice she’s there, you squirm around to get as close as you can to her, and you smile so big at her.  It’s so freaking cute, and I can’t wait to watch you play with each other as you get bigger.

Tomorrow is your first Thanksgiving, and then only two weeks until your blessing!  Christmas will be here before we know it, then – oh my gosh – your birthday!

I love you more than all the leaves on all the trees.

I was having a chat with a financial auditor the other day and he was telling me of some interesting stories (yes, there are some) that he has come across in his many years of auditing. Something that really astounded me was what he told me about his time auditing NHS hospitals. There are millions if not billions of pounds sitting in NHS bank accounts which they are not allowed to touch – in fact they are never allowed to touch it. The reason? Well, consider the following situation:

A very generous person leaves £10,000 in their will to Ward 24 of a certain hospital because that hospital looked after their husband so well when he was seriously ill. If that ward closes or if that hospital closes then you can’t go back to the person who left that money in their will and ask them “what do you want to do with it now?”. They are dead, they can’t answer you. Because no further instructions can be given by the donor nothing can be done with the money, ever! The money just sits in trust in a bank account and gathers dust. The NHS can spend any interest but cannot touch a penny of the original donation because they cannot use it for any purpose other than the purposes specified by the original donor. Mad!

As a young photographer (in time spent behind a camera and not in age), it is always an honour to spend time with a seasoned professional, especially if that photographer is the leader in the particular genre.  I had the privilege of spending a day with Will Robson-Scott.  He is  British photographer who has made his name in shooting graffiti.  I was blown away by the insight he offered into the profession I wish to enter.

Over drinks we were discussing different projects and ideas I have for some documentary work I wish to shoot.  Bouncing ideas off him was great, and we have already decided on two projects I wish to undertake.  The one project I have yet to see been done.  The other is something that many people have photographed before and it is something I am going to have to concentrate on finding an angle.  But the ideas are coming together nicely.

As the year winds down, and the excitement builds, I feel as though I am stuck in a little bit of Limbo.  There are a few loose ends that need to be tied up and I just want to start the course already…

But it is said, patience is a virtue…

Will

Up until last weekend, San Francisco was having incredible November weather. The sun was shining, the air was crisp, and all we wanted to do was be outside.

We happen to have a little outdoor patio that measures about 8′x8′ and it was starting to look a bit disgusting with the leaves and dirt that had accumulated.  So, a few weekends ago Will and I took a couple of hours to clean things up, take a quick trip to our neighborhood nursery, and get our planting on.

I wish I had Before pictures, becauase the transformation was pretty dramatic. Anyhow, here’s our little outdoor patio (which we still don’t use, but at least now it looks good!)

That’s our neighbor’s window, not ours. They don’t have access to the patio. hehe
