Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Asta or Astrid, then today is your day! Grattis!

Weather has been ok. Sunny and cool.

I survived Thanksgiving yesterday. I managed to not even cry once.

We ate at the community dinner at noon. My cousin and her husband and many many volunteers cook a feast every year. It costs nothing to eat there. They donate all the food and the time. It is held in a different church every year. With 7 churches in town, it is not a hardship on any church. They feed around 200 every year, I think. It was our first year eating there. With no family left, or no family who want to be here, much better than sitting home alone. Saw so many people that I know. It was a very nice time. My brother, John, Willie, and I ate there.

I slept most of the afternoon. Just tired, sick of sports or western movies, and I did not have to think.

In the evening we went to Sally and Paul’s to eat. It was very hard for me to agree to go there. I thought I would feel like we were intruding on their family time. But I did not. Willie even seemed to enjoy the evening. Their son Jordy, his girlfriend Rosie, and their daughter Richea were there. It was Richea’s dog we took care of before! Sally fixed a feast. You could not have paid me to check my blood sugar last nite!!! Then we played a game. Even though Willie did not join in, he enjoyed watching us and we all laughed a lot.

I truly cannot put into words how nice it was to be with people and feel like family. We all got along and laughed. Not one person there was playing head games like has gone on in our family for years. It was a joy. It was a joy.

Today is a day of rest. No work, no Swedish group, no housework. Just rest.

‘An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry’.

This is an amazing talk by Willie Smits on integrated approach to rain forest restoration in Kaliman

This is an amazing talk by Willie Smits on integrated approach to rain forest restoration in Kalimantan. It is never too late to reverse damages caused by humans. The local community life was restored as the nature and wild animal habitat is restored.

Willie Smits has devoted his life to saving the forest habitat of orangutans, the “thinkers of the jungle.” As towns, farms and wars encroach on native forests, Smits works to save what is left.

Willie Smits works at the complicated intersection of humankind, the animal world and our green planet. In his early work as a forester in Indonesia, he came to a deep understanding of that triple relationship, as he watched the growing population of Sulawesi move into (or burn for fuel) forests that are home to the orangutan. These intelligent animals were being killed for food, traded as pets or simply failing to thrive as their forest home degraded.

Smits believes that to rebuild orangutan populations, we must first rebuild their forest habitat — which means helping local people find options other than the short-term fix of harvesting forests to survive. His Masarang Foundation raises money and awareness to restore habitat forests around the world — and to empower local people. In 2007, Masarang opened a palm-sugar factory that uses thermal energy to turn sugar palms (fast-growing trees that thrive in degraded soils) into sugar and even ethanol, returning cash and power to the community and, with luck, starting the cycle toward a better future for people, trees and orangs.

“This man has dedicated his life to saving the world, and for this he earns our deepest respect.”

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Helga or Olga, then today is your day! Grattis!

Weather remains gorgeous. I spent much of yesterday afternoon outside. Very nice. Still flowers blooming here. In november. We may pay later. Did have a few more clouds today but nothing more severe than that. Yesterday morning was a bit frosty and foggy.

Had Swedish group yesterday. The program was me. I had a page of Swedish words to translate. They were way too easy! Hard to find a happy medium. If they have to think, then I hear griping, mostly from one. Today that said that not as many show up when *I* have translating for the group. Most of the ones missing were ill today. Sure is hard to never be right.

Had lunch on friday with Sally at Jalisco’s. Good food. And we had a good visit. Sometimes it is hard to wonder, how the he** did I end up here. Or just how things are. What did I ever do? We both discussed that but there are no answers.

I went to the Old Mill Museum in town yesterday afternoon. I walked all over outside and took a lot of photos. Relaxing. Nice area. My grandfather worked there as a young man. I can still hear his laugh. And still miss him. See all the photos of the mill, the river, etc. here.

Then I drove up on Coronado Heights. It is a hill named after the explorer Coronado. A sword was found years ago that dated back to his time and we think he may have made this far north. There is a ‘castle’ built on the top by WPA workers during WWII. And many places to have picnics. The view from the top is spectacular. See all my photos of the hill and the awesome views here.

I took the long way home. Saw a llama and some horses. When I got home I got very tired and felt so cold. I finally laid down for a short nap and to cover up.

Last nite was nothing but frustration. Cannot get photos to load easily to Flickr. Used to go fast. Could do 70 at a time. Now. Nothing. One or two and then it freezes. And I have a comment I want to make on FaceBook. No can do. Keep getting an error message. And the tv and the radio. On at the same time. Both on crap. I know he does it just to pi$$ me off. Has both on and then falls asleep. Where does that leave me? If I change the tv, he wakes up and gets huffy. What did I ever do?

I had lunch at noon with Chris at Jalisco’s. I think I might as well move in!! I seem to always be there. Food in consistantly good. The staff take excellent and fast care of you. And one waiter takes time to help me learn a new word or two in Spanish. Cannot beat it!

Then I worked and had 6 tours. Nicely spaced out. And they left lots of money in donations. Always nice.

Came home and had a major meltdown. Just desperately wanted my mom again. Willie did take me out to eat. He did not really want to but he did. Home but still teary. What an idiot I am.

‘An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry’.

I haven’t blogged in a few days because I’ve been very busy with things! The other day I was told that a dog I was interested in, and had even met a few times, was adopted out to someone else. I’m still very heartbroken about it. He was a total sweetheart and just what I’ve always wanted. I’m still looking for dog, preferably a larger male, but I think it maybe hard to find another dog that’s perfectly housebroken, quiet, silly but laid back, calm, loveable, and can be roughed up without taking it too personally. After he was adopted out, I was recommended a coonhound that’s pretty laid back and sweet, but he isn’t all that housebroken. I just started to like him, too! I’m not all that sure on just how to housebreak a dog, and I don’t really want to clean up the mess that often. I like a dog that doesn’t leave me guessing when it needs to go. It seems like a lot to ask for, but I’ve seen a lot of dogs like this, and I’d like to have a good one of my own as well. I’m still learning about this coonhound, named Walter, and another named Gabe. We’ll see how it goes with them!

………………………….Sherlock……………………………………….Nick (top) and Davy (bottom)……………….

I would like to stick with adopting from the people who had Willie because the “getting to know you as pet owners/rescue organization” process is complete. Rob and I actually met them in July when we adopted our two guinea pigs from them. Rob got a baby guinea pig named Sherlock for me back in May, but he was from a pet store and got sick. unfortunately, the vet couldn’t take us in time and he died. We still wanted guinea pigs because they’re such comical little animals and can be very cuddly. Sherlock was a musical little guy and would get excited over a radio getting turned on and would even sing with me when I would. The new boys we got are brothers named Davy and Nick. They and my hamsters are actually the inspiration that got me started on Kourage Kritters. The first pieces I made were a set of Davy and Nick earrings, a set of Mitzi and Priscilla earrings, and a necklace to remember Sherlock by. Of course, I updated my style since then, as I wasn’t planning on selling at the time. I was just wanting to wear my pets when I go out!

……………………….Davy and Nick pop art…………………..

I’m sure other people would like to wear their pets–at least I would hope I’m not the only one!–and that’s why I do have the option of ordering a Kustom Kritter from my store! All I need from YOU is a picture of your pet, or the special animal that you would like for me to make. By that I mean, you can see the loons and dolphins… obviously were not someone’s pet! I also did these elephants (below), also not pets! But you catch my drift. I can do custom orders, it is $5 more since it isn’t on my regular list of creations. Also, I’m more used to doing my main line, but with a custom piece, I’m really looking at the pictures to get my piece to look right which takes a little extra time, work, and patience.

After all this took place, I got a message from my friend of ten years (Shelley) to call her at her new job, which she is manager of. She talked her boss into hiring me! So now, I have a physical job along with my jewelry. Don’t worry, it won’t take too much time from my jewelry making. I can work everything out just fine. It’s nice to have some extra money on the way! It sucks working for someone else again, as I haven’t done so since April, but I guess I have to take what I can get until my jewelry REALLY takes off. There for a while it did, then it stopped, though none of that traffic was from the online store that I’m still trying to promote…. Please promote me? Maybe since I’ll be able to have frequent contact with her again (I moved away when I was 17) I can have a model for my jewelry? Would a model help? I hate pictures of me. Haha!

The main reason that I did start this post was because in my last one, I forgot that I had yet another inspiration for jewelry. This is weirder than the spiders and platypuses, but possibly cuter for you guys! Last week I was out and passed a cow field. There was a cow by the roadside fence that looked so desperate for food during this brown grass season that it was eating a plastic grocery bag! I hope it soon realized what it had and spit it out. If not, I really hope it finds a way to pass the bag! Anyway, I thought the cow was just so cute, and I thought, “Hey! Cow earrings!” So I have some of those that I’m finishing up along with the other pieces. Everything that I’ve done is half glazed since I got interrupted by sad things and happy things. I need to finish those when I get off of here and work on some new pieces I’m doing. Which brings me to….

Charm bracelets! Are this still cool? I’ve always wanted a charm bracelet. I love the way they dangle and jingle and they’re so cool. They’re casual, they’re formal. Okay, so mine not be as formal, not being made from pretty shiny metals. But I am making some charms for your bracelets! The pieces will be about ½” long each. Right now I’ve made a brown caped bunny, dwarf hamster, creamsicle hamster, scarab beetle (I have a larger scarab pendant coming soon as well), lady bug, and a calico guinea pig. Very cute. I was thinking of selling them for about $3 each. Does that sound about right? I know they’re small and charms are cheapish, so I thought especially without the cost of too many findings and chains, $3 was a nice steal for you cheap people. And a little secret–eh-hem… I’m very cheap. I’ve gone to the dollar store and felt like not opening my purse. But there are many days that I’m like “Shopping!” So I do know where some of you other financially hurting people stand. I’m sooo with you right now.

I will leave you now, after this insanely huge post with a new posted item on my store. Last time it was the Witch Doctors, this time it’s the Purple Dragonflies! Enjoy and have a lovely week!

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Krister or Kristian, then today is your day!

Weather is changing. Mostly cloudy and cool—ish today. This afternoon the clouds were so heavy and it looked and felt dampish out. Nothing on the radar yet but I see rain/snow in Nebraska.

This morning was our Swedish group. We had a speaker from Sweden named Peter Salvolainen. He was so interesting. He is started working in forensics and now works on studying dogs DNA. He has found out that ALL dogs originated in southern China and ALL dogs are descended from wolves. Amazing.

After Peter’s talk we got to ask him questions. And even stayed almost 30 min. late. We asked him about health care in Sweden and here. He thinks that all the fuss that everyone here is having over health care is silly. And most Europeans/Scandinavians cannot understand what the problem is. Oh, my! The scrunchie faces on the ultra conservatives in our group. They believe that only certain people are good enough to have health care. Someone asked about the high taxes in Sweden to pay for all this free health care. Well, in Sweden 30% is taken out of his paycheck but here in the good ole USA he had 35% taken out. Hmm. Caused more scrunchie faces. Then he was asked what Swedes think of Obama. He stated that most Swedes like him, but they would like anyone other than Bush. And he added that all of Europe would prefer anyone other than Bush. There are now some faces that cannot be unscrunched. Nothing he said surprised me, but many were shocked. He did say that in Sweden Obama would actually be considered a conservative and he himself is very liberal. After our group ended, several who usually stay to chat with our guests, left right away. So much for tolerance and open mindedness and freedom of speech. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about not only dogs but about present Sweden and Swedes.

I had lunch with Naomi. We ate at Season’s and Chris was our chef. He came and sat with us when he was caught up. He does my hamburger just perfect. What a nice grandson I have. I am blessed.

Then I was off to Salina to shop for baby shower gifts. Have a shower for my niece tomorrow nite so I cannot go see the Christmas lights being turned on Lindsborg. I always go and watch. And in Salina, I am officially now tired of road construction. Sigh….

My mood is still bordering on tears but it sure helped to spend time with Naomi and Beth and Terry from FaceBook made me laugh.

Willie is still in pain and still won’t call our doctor. The chiropractor did some extra work on his knee today so hopefully that might help. Why are men so stubborn?

‘An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry’.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Mårtin, then today is your day!

Weather is cooler and cloudy. No rain but there was a chance of early fog. The weatherman even mentioned snow in places this weekend. Time will tell. No plans this weekend so I really do not care.

Today is Veteran’s Day here. My father was tail gunner in WWII. He was stationed in Morocco, India, Burma, Tinian Island, and Hawaii. He flew more missions than was allowed at the time. All his missions involved flying over The Hump. I lost 2 friends and a cousin in Vietnam. Bless them all.

Willie has been fighting a sore knee for a while. Came on sort of suddenly. Says he never injured it or anything. It was very swollen and sore. Swelling went away but stayed sort of sore. Has been going to the chiropractor. Yesterday got much worse. More swelling and more pain. He has been using a heating pad but switched to ice last nite. even got up in the middle of the nite. I want him to call our family doc but you know men. He sees the chiropractor and then I will push the issue.

Nothing happening today. Nice to do nothing but stay home. One needs to recharge their battery sometimes.

‘An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry’.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Eugen or Eugenia, then today is your day!

Weather is still good but the winds are howling. Not so bad in town but driving from town to town today was not so easy. Windy again tomorrow. And warm. It was in the 70s today and again tomorrow.

I HAD to get up really early for a 9am meeting at the Red Barn. We discussed the Artist’s Open House coming up in december. A fun time but a very long long day for me. I rarely get a chance to visit any of the artist’s studios. Oh well. There is one I usually go to, but this year there is one I would love to visit. Probably won’t get time to.

Then on the road to Abilene. Pharmacy sent me the wrong insulin. And then they faxed my dr. to write a refill for the same wrong insulin. What in the hell is going on with them?? They are always on top of things.

Then lunch at Sonic. It was just OK. Had cheeseburger, cheese tots which I barely touched, and ice cream.

Back to Salina for groceries. Our Dillon’s store has been completely and totally refurbished. Everything new, even new carts. Not quite done. Wow. Really nice but I was lost! Everything moved!! I never asked anyone to be a host or hostess for Swedish group tomorrow so it is me.

Then I had to pick up Willie so he could get his truck. Finishing up our last 2 small fields of wheat. Hope he gets done before it rains again.

Tonite had an ALLY meeting. Have a new secretary. He is cool! We are hoping to get a documentary to watch in december. It is about Erin Davies and her car. Called Fagbug. I am anxious to see it. Next semester we are having a show that is both very fun but with a serious message. Will be fun.

Now home. Someone is upset that I get to watch a 1 hr. tv show. One hour out of 7 days. Too much to ask? I would think not but then what do I know. I rarely watch what I want. I dcvr everything and watch later. Someone watches all he wants and then sleeps through it all. Grow up and deal with it.

Jo is just strange. She laid next to the front door with her head kind of propped up on the door. And she just stared and stared at Willie. Her eyes were droopy with sleep but she kept staring. Very odd.

‘An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry’.

Chapter 15

I AM A SOLDIER

HENDRICKS’ STATION was torched; reduced to ashes, the epitome of despair, destruction and devastation. I approached the farm with caution, revolver drawn at full cock. Smoke continued to curl from the blackened upright post, all which remained of the main house. The pall of utter devastation was heartbreaking, the stench of death overwhelming. A great tragedy occurred here, and I was powerless to make amends. I could see deep in the blackened pit the remains, the shards that had once been the home of a living family of Dutch colonists. There were the remains of an iron cook-stove, broken crockery and a few bottles, virtually nothing had survived the fire. Near the front door, in the scorched flagstones of the threshold I traced the word W·e·l·k·o·m. It was there, I made what was to be the first of several gristly discoveries; the blackened corpse of an adult male, a broken muzzle-loading rifle still clutched in his death grip. Everywhere there were traces of the doomed Hendricks’ family last few desperate moments. Cowering under what I presumed were the remains of a bed, were two sets of pitiful human remains, child size, locked forever in a final embrace of terror. The Zulus in their murderous rampage had spared no one.

The barn, the outhouse, the storehouse and the stone kraal were left largely intact. I let out an audible gasp at the discovery of the well with a working pump. I was so thirsty! I led Star and Duke to water, and pumped and pumped. The water gushed forth in all its life-sustaining crystal cold purity. I don’t think I ever tasted water so good. I filled all my canteens. A couple of stray chickens clucked, crossed my path, I resolved to catch them, as they were destined to make a fine supper.

The storehouse was the only building of note the Zulus had not broken into. With no windows and barred by heavy oaken door and iron padlock. The reinforced stone structure had defeated all Zulu attempts to break in and pillage. I held in my hand Mnr. Hendricks’ pocket watch; it was a quarter past two. You will forgive me I’m sure, when I tell you with all the other excitement and consternation going on that I completely forgot to mention that before I left camp, I searched the Zulu dead. Among the various sordid sundry bits of items, I discovered a number of artifacts that clearly were European in origin, including a fancy dress mirror, a locket containing the wedding pictures of Mnr. and Mev. Hendricks, and of course, Mnr. Hendricks’ pocket watch. Armed with this information, I surmised that I was very close to Hendricks’ station and these Zulus were from the very same iButho who had attacked the same. It seemed my hunch was correct.

I studied the storehouse door. It was plain to see where the Zulu’s had hacked and pried at the stout oaken door to no avail, the Zulus simply did not possess the heavy tools they needed to defeat the heavy door. I, by contrast did. I took a couple of steps back and leveled my Martini rifle. The powerful blast from my rifle easily shattered the lock where the wrought-iron muscle power of the stabbing spears of the Zulu’s had failed. Inside, what I found was an overall disappointment. Stacks of mealie bags, cattle feed and a few odd farm implements, nothing of any use to me, nothing except a bottle of whiskey, tucked out of sight in the rafters, safely concealed from prying eyes of Mev. Hendricks no doubt. It seemed Mnr. Hendricks was not quite the upstanding pious Dutch Christian that we might have believed.

Aside from its fortress-like construction, the storehouses contain nothing that was of any value to me. Except for the fresh water, and a few stray chickens, the overall farm was a useless burned out hulk. There was nothing here to report except to confirm the massacre of the Hendricks’ family. To that end, I had graves to dig.

I should tell you, digging graves is hard work. I retrieved my entrenching tool and set about the task. With in fifteen minutes of working in the hot African sun, I was drenched with sweat. I stripped off my duty-blouse, which left me clad from the waist up only in my braces and white cotton skivvies, woven in the mills, the sweatshops of London no doubt. Sweat ran down my back in rivulets, the cotton fabric clung to my body outlining my girlish bosom. I didn’t care; I was the only person within 25 miles that knew I was a girl, except for Burlingham, and he was back at camp with a two-foot spear stuck in his chest. He wasn’t going anywhere. I continued to work.

It took me most of the rest of the afternoon to dig five graves. I didn’t dig them very deep as the ground was hard and unyielding. I piled stones on top of the graves and fashioned a makeshift cross. When my work was done, I stood there feeling forlorn and homesick, thinking I should do something more. I couldn’t think of anything else to do but sing. I began with just a little hum, and then I sang the song we sang at my brother’s funeral Dewy and Wallace. I sang for Dewey, I sang for Wallace, I sang for my friends Marty, Lilly and Sally, I even sang for Mr. Crowley. All alone, there amidst those five forlorn graves in the African bush, I sang in my best high clear soprano.

I sang in my native Welsh, these are the words I sang in English . . .

♫ Far away, a voice is calling,
Bells from memory do chime
Come home again, come home again,
They call through the oceans of time.

Well keep a welcome in the hillside.
Well keep a welcome in the Vales
This land you knew will still be singing
When you come home again to Wales.

This land of song will keep a welcome
And with a love that never fails,
Well kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales. ♫

I checked Mnr. Hendricks’ pocket watch again, it was a quarter-past-five O’clock. I still had enough daylight to go back to camp and retrieve Burlingham and bring him back to here, where I figured at least we had shelter and access to fresh water. I picketed Duke in the kraal and dressed the chickens for our supper. I figured in forty-five minutes I could be back here, and maybe have enough daylight left to do something about Burlingham’s wounds. That was my plan.

How wrong I was.

I rode back and retraced my steps to the original campsite. I was easily within 100 yards when a thunder-crack blasted past my head, so close it knocked off my helmet. The bullet ricocheted on the rocks behind me. I pitched full body into the dirt. I dared long enough to pull my Martini out of the scabbard, slap Star on the rump, before a second cha-chink followed by the unmistakable sound of a Martini-Henry loading lever closing the breech, a quarter-of-a-second later, a second bullet slammed into the dirt near my left foot.

“BURLINGHAM, YOU FUCK-FACED LIVERPOOL DOLT! IT’S ME SERGEANT CLAIBORNE!”

“FUCK YOUS CLAIBORNE! YOUS’LL NOT GIVES ME UP TO ‘ANG!”

Burlingham was Looney, off his trolley; the problem was clear and entirely my own fault. I had foolishly, stupidly, left a deranged, mutinous soldier with a rifle, thinking that he might use it in the event of a Zulu attack. Now it seemed that Burlingham was to have none of that, he was intent on using my altruistic generosity as a mean to murder me and prevent me from returning him to Pietermaritzburg to stand court-martial.

“BURLINGHAM! Stand down, I’m comming in!” I wormed my way closer, pissed-off that I was reduced to groveling in the dirt to approach my own campsite. Despite being an asshole and a dozy scouser, I was well aware Burlingham was a crack shot and this is the what worried me. “Burlingham, you shoot me and you’ll die, here, now, here in this desert!”

“Don’ts comes any closer, Claiborne! I’s warns yous!”

I ignored him of course, I crept to within twenty-five yards of him. I tried to reason with him. “Burlingham, listen to me, I have fresh water, I have two chickens, a nice cup of tea. We have shelter out of this weather. I’ll get that spear out of you, I promise, you have to trust me. You have to let me help you.”

“Fuck you Claiborne! Yous got it in fer me, yous ain’t no mate! Yous jest gonna git me ‘anged!” Burlingham blubbered.

I took a chance and crept ever closer. “I’m not gonna do anything of the sort! What you done, you done—That’s for the court-martial to decide . . .”

“Claiborne, I’s ‘urt so bad . . .” Burlingham moaned.

“Then let me help you . . .” It was then I made my move. I pounced. I should think I surprised the hell out of him. Burlingham, the narcissist that he was constantly underestimated me. What Burlingham didn’t know about me was I possessed my Papa’s resolve; I am not so easily defeated. I AM A SOLDIER. He had no inkling that I, a dumb a girl was capable of such audacity. I fell on him, wrestled the Martini out of his grasp; I brought the walnut butt of the Webley down hard across his skull. I cracked him upside his head with such force I’m surprised I didn’t kill him.

Burlingham howled. “Ow! Yous bitch! Yous leetle bald-face-cunt! Whatcha go’n do dat fer yous leetle blighter!” This was the first time he called me a “little blighter” . . . it was destined not to be the last.

“That was for trying to kill me!”

“Oh, dat leetle ole thang,” Burlingham proffered a weak smirk. ”I was just josh’n yous . . . a joke Claiborne, can’t yous even takes a joke?” Burlingham felt the knot on his head, his hand came up bloody. “Looksee what yous done to me, I’m bleeding.”

“You’ll get worse than that if you ever try that stunt again!” I was not amused. I was full on top of him, all 94 lbs. of me, disheveled and panting. It took me several second before I realized Burlingham, perverted Davy Burlingham was no longer struggling, he wasn’t so much subdued, as he was using his vantage point to look down the front of my shirt. Despite a knot on his forehead, the size of a coconut, perverted Burlingham, forever the nonce, summoned enough clarity to leer at the sight of my sweaty girlish chest.

“Oh Mama, Mm-mm, dids I’s ever tells yous—Yous iz one fine-looking piece of quinny.” Burlingham offered a shit-eating-grin as he sank weakly back into a haze of pained submission.

“Shut-the-fuck-up Burlingham.” I abruptly buttoned up my white cotton undershirt. There were to be no more free peek shows to amuse the peanut gallery.

A dissolute private Burlingham aside, my biggest problem now, was how to get a wounded 180 lb. man up and on to a horse. I didn’t have the physical strength to wrestle him up on to a mount, especially if he continued to be combative and uncooperative. Therefore, I contrived to construct an Indian “travois.” I read about this particularly clever Indian invention in a chapter in a one of my Jack Hayes novels . . . It seemed the American Wild West was full of practical applications in the African desert. I figured it was the easiest way to transport Burlingham the three miles back to Hendricks’ station. Once there, I could make bivouac, make supper, I personally was dying for a cup of tea. Last of all, there was the immotile problem of the Zulu spear. I was apprehensive to say the least about the successful prospects of removing the spear from his chest without killing him. Well, I couldn’t waste time worrying about it, as it would have to be done, and it would have to be done tonight. I trussed Burlingham up good this time. I was a fool to think he possessed even one iota of honor. He was an abasement, not to be trusted. I bound his hands behind his back, like the prisoner he was.

“YOU are under arrest, Mister.” I said as I loaded him on to the travois. The afternoon shadows were already growing long before Star, Duke, Burlingham and I, finally began the three-mile trek back to Hendricks’ station. I snickered as Burlingham continued to complain bitterly as to how I’s wuz ‘urting him. I paid him no mind; a cup of tea, a chicken in a pot, a safe place to kip, these were the only thoughts on my mind. How little did I know.

*     *      *

I MADE A MODEST BIVOUAC. There amongst the mealie bags of the fortress like enclosure of the storehouse. For the first time since Burlingham’s attempted rape, I finally felt safe. The stout storehouse walls offered a certain measure of security from Zulu attack. Burlingham, he was tied up, and I had four solid walls and only one way in between me and the Zulus. I figured since the Zulus carry virtually nothing in the way of supplies, they have no sustainability in the field. The remnants of the iButho must have moved on by this time. I risked a small fire. I boiled some tea, and cooked the chicken. The chicken was delicious, the tea, an absolute life-saver. After supper, I faced the inevitable.

“Davy, are you awake?” I shook him gently, “It’s time, we have to get that spear out.” I offered him some whiskey from the bottle I found.

“Oh nice! Been hold’n out on me, ‘eh Claiborne?” Burlingham drank greedily, his Adam’s apple bobbed as the fiery whiskey spilled down his throat. He wasted almost as much as he consumed.

“That’s enough.” I laid out everything I thought I would need including my sharpest knife, needle, thread and the last clean field dressing.

“Here, bite down on this . . . this is gonna hurt—I can’t really say I cared all that much.” I laid out what clean white dressing I had, clambered up on top of him, I put my knee in his chest for leverage, and pulled. The spear came straight out, with a spectacular sucking sound and frightful gout of blood. Burlingham’s eyes rolled back in his head, he gurgled and passed out.

“Oh, good gawd, I’ve killed him!” I threw the Zulu spear into the corner, as if it were a red-hot-poker. Revolted, I applied pressure to the wound to staunch the flow of blood. After what seemed like an eternity, the bleeding subsided to ooze. I took out my kit and sewed him up; it was a jolly good patch job. I sat beside him for three hours, alone, by the dying embers of the fire, listening to his shallow breathing.

I think I must have dozed a moment.

“Oi, Claiborne . . .” Burlingham opened one eye.

“You’re alive!” I immediately tried to conceal my joy. “How do you feel?”

“Like shit, Claiborne. Eh, I’s sure could use another drop of dat whiskey?”

“No, you’ve had enough, just rest; it will be daylight in a few hours.” I stirred the fire and set the kettle on to boil, thinking nice a cup of tea might solve all my problems.

“Claiborne . . . why? Why’d yous do all yous done, to save my life’n all?”

I shot him a glance, was he trying to thank me? No, he was setting me up again. I was cautious. “Mr. Burlingham, I hold the Queen’s NCO, you are a soldier in my section, you are my responsibility. It is my duty as an officer in the 24th Regiment-of-Foot to keep you alive.” I said brusquely.

“Bullshit! Yous noth’n but a bald-face-cunt-liar! Yous dun dis so yous can ‘ave satisfaction, so yous can takes me back to Pieter-burg—So yous can see me ‘ang!”

“NO. That’s not true!” I became adamant. “Whether you hang or not, that’s for a court-martial to decide. I told you it’s my duty; I have a responsibility, to the Regiment, to Captain Fredrickson, to Major Steele. They expect me to see this mission completed.” I bit my lip. I felt more than a little bit guilty. I knew it was a weak answer. Once again, Burlingham had succeeded in turning the tables on me; he had succeeded in making himself the injured party and me the villain.

Burlingham seemed to want to talk. “Oi, Claiborne, all’s dat wut I’s said back there, I’s didn’t mean it, ’bout yous being too ugly to tap’n all . . .” Burlingham coughed, he raised himself up. ”Yous ain’t really such a bad look’n leetle blighter. The way the fire lights yous hair . . . such pretty hair.”

I nervously poked at the fire. I really didn’t want to have this conversation. I certainly didn’t liked the way he was looking at me. I got up, “I’m going to get some more wood.”

Burlingham it seemed wasn’t finished with me not just yet, his eyes narrowed to evil-mean-little-pig-slits, his demeanor assumed a derisive mocking tone. His face darkened, “Oi, Claiborne, don’t yous be so uppity wit me. Yous ain’t all that fine—Did anybodys ever tells yous—Yous gots a split between yous front teeth?”

“I know.” How well I knew. Burlingham’s words cut me like a knife. I knew I wasn’t all that pretty, just a girl with a boy’s dirty face. It wasn’t as if I was constantly taken with vanity, even before I joined the army, even back home in Glamorganshire Wales; people mistook me for a “boy” all the time. I guess it was mostly because of the way I was dressed in my brother’s hand-me-down clothes. Even still, a girl does like to look pretty and when the shopkeepers would say, “You’re next boy.” The words still stung, I would get so angry. Papa did his best to console me. “Tessa, don’t be so sore . . . You’re my bestest girl, and I think you’re beautiful.” This did little to lessen my pain. I left Burlingham in a huff.

My tongue slipped between the gap in my front teeth. I was sick of Burlingham and all his cruel games. Burlingham had this knack at finding my every weakness, every chink in my armor. I knew it was stupid vanity to let his stupid aspersions bother me. I wished my teeth were straighter, on the other hand, I could spit better than any boy in Glamorganshire! Henry, he never seemed to mind. He said I had a beautiful smile.

I returned with the wood. Burlingham dozed fitfully; I was grateful for a few moments of peace and quiet. I cautiously felt his forehead, my worst fears were confirmed, he was running a fever. I washed his face with cool water, and sat beside him in an uneasy silence.

“Claiborne . . .?”

“What is it now Burlingham?” I was exasperated it seemed Burlingham was determined to be a constant trial.

“Me bladder, it’s ‘ard as a stone.”

“What?” As it turned out, pulling the spear out of his chest was nothing compared to what was to happened next.

“I got me ah pisser, Claiborne; I gotta go to the loo.”

I hadn’t counted on this; I was completely at a loss.

“‘elp me up Claiborne.” Burlingham struggled, he staggered to the door with my help. I’m not exactly sure what I thought was going to happen next, but what happened next certainly took me by surprise.

“Well . . .?” Burlingham stood there as if he was expecting me to do something.

“Well, what?” I said, I wasn’t being deliberately dense, I don’t think even at this point; I really had any idea—I never put two and two together.

“Take it out.”

“Take what out? You’ve got to be fuck’n kidding me. I absolutely will not take it out!”

“Oi? Yous gots me ‘ands tied behind me back, what-the-fuck yous expect me to do, Claiborne? Piss me self? Take it out Claiborne—There’re bloody rules against the mistreatment of prisoners!” Burlingham smirked, he was a regular barracks barrister that Burlingham. I stood there dumbstruck at an impasse as what to do; I knew one thing for certain, he was too dangerous to untie.

“TAKES IT OUT CLAIBORNE!” Burlingham screeched, he rampaged against his bindings with such deranged convulsions, I was afraid he would tear open his wound and start bleeding again. “I’S TELLS YOUS, I’S GONNA PISS ME SELF, I SWEAR! TAKES IT OUT CLAIBORNE! YOUS LEETLE BALD-FACE-CUNT. UNTIES ME, OR TAKES IT OUT. I’S DARE YOUS!”

I gritted my teeth. “All right.” I undid the buttons on his fly, my hands trembled, disquiet with trepidation. I fished in his breeches for his willie—While it certainly wasn’t the first willie I’d ever seen, or even touched, even still, I was careful not to look.

Burlingham, I should think, was thoroughly enjoying my humiliation. Never one to be upstaged, he danced, jangled, and made numerous “ooh” and “ah” sounds of satisfaction as his piss spattered the ground. When he was finally finished, I stuffed his willie back into his trousers as clinically as possible. Burlingham, never satisfied, made certain to degrade me further.

“Yous likes that, eh Claiborne?” Burlingham sniggered weakly; he sank to the blanket utterly exhausted, dissolute in his satisfaction.

“Bog-off, Burlingham, I so fuck’n hate you!”

I washed my hands; I washed and washed at the pump. I felt dirty and violated. The whole incident gave me the creeps. I tried to put it out of my mind. I settled down for the night. I made ready twelve rounds from my expense pouch and pushed the triangular point of the bayonet deep into a mealie bag where I could grab it a moments notice. I took up a position in the storehouse door. The African sky was full of stars; it was going to be a long night.

When I was a little girl we of course went trick or treating on our street. We lived at 1217 N. Second St in Phoenix. We lived in the big family home that my Grandmother lived in.

Before I was born there was the true story of Winnie Ruth Judd. As a little girl I was told how she killed her two roommates and then tried to ship the bodies to LA. There was a house a couple of blocks down the street from where we lived and we believed that that is where she killed them. Every Halloween we would go to that house trick or treating. It was always dark which of course made our imagination run wild. We would ring the doorbell and then we would run like crazy. Never bothering to see who was there. Winnie was committed to the State Mental Hospital for her sentence and she escaped several times. We always thought she went back to that house. We found out much later that that was not the house. In fact my mother’s cousin’s husband was the Winnie’s landlord and he took the suitcases that she stuffed the bodies in to the train station for her. There were five of us that would go trick or treating together. My best friend, her sister and brother, my middle sister and myself. My younger sister was too young to go then.

Anyway, that’s the scariest story from my childhood.

True Crime Story: The Trunk Murderess

Judd was charged and convicted of the murder of Agnes LeRoi, one of her two friends (the other being Hedvig Samuelson) she allegedly murdered in mid-October 1931 in Phoenix, Arizona. The fateful fight that led to the shooting of the two women reportedly was fueled by a conflict of interest—all three women were interested in the same man.

Judd was displayed in headlines across the country and the world as the “Tiger Woman”; “The Blonde Butcher”; “The Arizona Tigress”; “Wolf Woman”; and “The Velvet Tigress” due to her alleged ferociousness. The case quickly became known as “The Trunk Murders,” as the one intact body and the dismembered body were shipped in trunks by train from Phoenix to Los Angeles.

Winnie Ruth in 1969 after being returned to confinement after her fifth escape

Contrary to popular belief, Judd was tried and convicted only of the murder of Mrs. LeRoi, whose body was not dismembered. The jury that tried Judd condemned her 8 February 1932. An appeal was unsuccessful. Judd was sentenced to be hanged 17 February , 1933 and sent to Arizona State Prison. The death sentence was repealed and she was sent to Arizona State Mental Hospital 24 April, 1933.

From 1933 to 1962 Judd escaped from the Arizona State Hospital seven times, often for several years at a time. She was released 21 December 1971 and moved to Stockton, California. She died 23 October 1998 the age of ninety-three.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Simon or Simone, then today is your day!

Weather was supposed to be ok today but the weatherman lied again. It was cloudy and windy. then this morning we had light rain. Now a large area of rain is getting near. About an hour away now. Denver and area had heavy snow today. Heard from a friend that her friends there had a foot of snow with drifts up to 18 inches. And still snowing. I am jealous!!!

Willie worked on sowing wheat. I helped him move machinery from one field to another. And took several photos. He even worked until after dark. I always worry if he is ok. And now his knee became swollen and sore so he is limping. Another worry. Life is hard when he has no one to turn to and I have no support system to speak of.

I got brave and drove the new truck today. Had to go to Lindsborg to get my brother Jay. Then we drove to Salina so he could see the eye dr. New glasses are on the way.

Jay took me out to eat at Moka’s. A wonderful place. You forget that Salina exists. Seems like you are in a city like Denver or Kansas City. How I wish.

then I bought groceries. We were sooo out of things to eat. I came home and treated myself to a cup of Seattle’s Best coffee and a Krispy Kreme donut. Mmmm. A great way to end the day.

Violence is never the answer.

Google “The Willie Lynch Letters.”

I was introduced to the Willie Lynch Letter, and now I’m on a new level of awareness. The Willie Lynch Letter has opened my mind towards the impacts of mind control on people. I think that it applies to all people who are under it’s influence.

Reading this letter gave me insight as to how the mind works. We all share a common mind, I’ve believed this for a while. Listen to “The One Mind Theory” episode on the Escape The Matrix Radio Show.

I believe that the forms of mind control in the letter apply to all people no matter how the form varies, and I will tell you why in a moment.

I believe that if you don’t know who you are, you are subject to become what your environment tells you. This is why I think that all realities are possible. My inner self has been telling me that there is something greater within me waiting to come out. But the illusion of my outer world has been telling me otherwise. It wasn’t until I realized that my inner belief mirror my reality, that I began to see all of the illusion.

There is one mind and it is governed by the same laws. There is a reason that the richer of mind get richer and the poorer of mind get poorer. If you tell a blind man that something is red and it is blue, it will be red to him even though he has no knowledge of what red is. The “blind” comparison I used to convey a form of awareness.

If I am dependent on things for my survival, it tends to become my guidelines for my actions. If I believe that I can only do a certain thing, my mind will continue to create that reality for me. Meaning if I have control over my mind, I create the reality that I see. Hmmm….sounds like something I’ve been realizing, and then I saw The Willie Lynch Letter.

Like I said, I don’t know if the speech or letter is made up or not, but it has opened my mind and raised my awareness to human psychology. I think I have found what I want to study in school…Psychology. So you will see me back in school with the money to pay for it and graduating too.

Thank you for reading.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Sabina, then today is your day!

Weather is ok but we have wind today. And a few clouds. Feel very autumn-like. Rain starts tomorrow. The wind is strange. Blows hard from the east and then pretty soon it blows from the west. Poor leaves keep going back and forth!

No word on the car yet. Have to take my brother somewhere tomorrow so will have to drive the truck. I do not want to do that. Not comfortable driving it but no choice.

Willie is back to sowing wheat. Jo is unhappy to be stuck at home also. She stays mostly in the bathroom. Then goes outside briefly and then right back in. No interested in anything.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Amanda or Rasmus, then today is your day!

Weather is back to sunny today. No wind. Just nice. I sat outside with the cats tonite. Had to have a coat on but otherwise nice.

No car yet. Not even a phone call. Class was cancelled tonite so I am not missing anything. Teacher is ill. Hope he recovers quick.

Willie helped friends load cattle to haul into the sale barn. I was home alone. Needed groceries badly. Nothing to cook. All I had was a truck hooked up to a cattle trailer. Like I can drive that!!! Or even unhook that!! Slim pickins for all.

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Eilert or Everet, then today is your day!

Weather dry and colder then a bit warmer. We saw some sun both today and yesterday.

Swedish group — it was awful. Cannot talk about it at all. I was stressed from the first minute until I left. Not a good day.

Friday evening John and I ventured to Wichita for an art opening. First we ate at the Texas Roadhouse. I have never ever had a better steak. Perfect. It was crowded and loud, but we liked it. Every so often the wait staff all stopped serving and danced in the aisles. Just fun.

Art showing was my friend David Friday and another artist Elly Fitzig. Great art. David took a photo of mine of thistles and made a painting. I bought it!! Very cool.

Then. The drive home. We barely got out of Wichita and my car engine made a horrid sound that we first thought was a blow out. But then it made this horrid popping sound that never quit. I managed to make it to a rest area and called Willie. We left the car there. Today he and a friend hauled it home. Our mechanic bought the parts to fix it so hopefully monday nite or tuesday I can have it back. What a nite.

today was not much better. John drove out to pick me up for lunch and work. We ate at Jalisco’s. Good eats and another friend Jerry joined us. Had not seen him for a while.

Then. Went to work at the Red Barn. And awful awful day. Cannot now go into details but it was not good. And on top of all the bad, I was busy. Twelve tours, Marsha was there for a while, and so was the president of the board. Good to see them both.

I was exhausted and came home to take a nap. Willie fixed chili for supper. Very good and perfect weather for it.

Last season futbol game before the play-offs. Gotta love the internet. watching it live online. Great picture this week with little lag time. Exciting game that we won!!!

If your name is Sibylla, then today is your day!

Weather continues to be really windy, really warm. In the 70s again today. But it is coming to an end. Western Kansas is in the 40s. There is heavy fog there also. Wish we could get a little fog here. Such a rare happening. Rain is to start around midnite with possible heavy rains tomorrow.

I have no plans today. Except to strive to be the best couch potato ever!! Rest of the week is busy.

Willie is working overtime sowing wheat. Wants to get as much done as possible before the rains hit. And then we hope it does not wash the seeds away.

Heard our new kittens today but have not seen them yet. Should be almost ready to venture out. Hope they are all little boys!!!

If your name is Antonia or Toini, then today is your day!

Weather was gorgeous today. Sunny with no wind. Air felt pretty chilly but still nice. Had some unexpected last nite. Need. Dry. Weather.

I worked today. It was quiet early so I accomplished quite a bit. I got a thing to play my iPod on and it works great. I had music today. MY music!! Very nice. I gave 5 tours. They were all very nice people. They were all amazed at the amount of art in the Red Barn. And that it was all done by just one man.

Tonite Willie & I ate at Red Lobster. It is his birthday today. He has said for several days that he did not want to go out. I encouraged him to ask his friends to join us but he did not. we ate good. He had steak and shrimp. I had grilled salmon covered in a shrimp sauce with rice. Excellent. Sad thing. Our son conveniently forgot that he has a father. He will be sorry some day.

On the way home we were going around 55 or 60 mph. Suddenly a deer appeared along the side of the road. Willie slammed on the road. She calmly walked across the road and we missed her by a couple of inches. I was shaky for a while. I have hit a deer before and it is scary.

I am freezing tonite. Not so cold outdoors but I am freezing. Cannot get warm. Weatherman just said it is to get warmer overnite. Hmmm.

Soccer team played tonite. Of course, no tv coverage here. They were in Kansas City. Would be fun to see them but will never happen. Important game and they won. I will watch the tape of it tomorrow. It runs at 1am. Lovely. Now we get to go to the play offs. With the final match in our stadium. How fun!

Wonder what you would find if you frisked the famous youth dance group from Ron Clark Academy?

Answer: An ObamaCare remix to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” and a smart kid named Willie.

If you don’t remember these kids, they were the ones that performed the creative “You Can Vote However You Like.”

Reminder: Ron Clark Academy is a private school so they are allowed to do this, unlike the previous schools: Click to view | Click to view.

How awesome is Willie (the kid in the very beginning)? During the election, he was the single McCain supporter in the group. As you can see, he may be the only one that has a steady head on his shoulders, haha. See what JammieWearingFool thought of Willie’s talking points:

I’ve seen this video several places around the blogosphere today, an incredibly shameful piece of propaganda from CNN, which has forever forfeited any pretense of objectivity. Yet I hadn’t seen the prelude here where ‘Willie’ lays out a devastating case against ObamaCare that leaves the CNN infobabe flummoxed and nearly speechless, as if she can’t believe what appears to be a 10-year-old has a superior grasp of the debate than she or any of the other empty heads at CNN.

Memo to the folks at Fox News Channel: Willie might be ready for a solo sitdown.

Willie stuck it to CNN. Way to go kid!

Side-Note: Although I’m COMPLETELY against ObamaCare, or any socialized health-care, I found this remix a lot better than Miley Cyrus’ original song “Party in the U.S.A.” – Haha. Talented group… Sorry Miley.
