According to www.hollyscoop.com Avril Lavigne is dating again. She’s rumoured to be dating Wilmer Valderrama. A source told Life & Style: “They have been friends since working together on Fast Food Nation in 2005, but things heated up last month. One of their first dates was Oct. 29 at Nobu in West Hollywood.” This weekend the two were spotted clubbing at LA hotspot Wonderland last Saturday. “She had her hand on his knee and they were whispering in each other’s ear, laughing,” says a witness. “They even closed the club, sneaking out just after 2.”

Hace unos cuantos artículos mi amiga Olenska desveló en una de sus contestaciones que me dedicaba  a cuidar niños. Pues sí, aunque intente aparentar que trabajo en la cosa de la cultura, que soy un atractivo gestor cultural (cuando explicaba de una manera larga y aparatosa a los americanos que me dedicaba a la gestión cultural, ellos decían “ahhh, you`re a party planner”…), que monto ciclos de cine y que me invitan a dar conferencias, la realidad de una comunidad autónoma con las arcas saqueadas, sobre todo en asuntos de cultura, me ha llevado a ganarme la vida decentemente. Es decir, con mis manos y mi paciencia (poca, que los críos son un encanto). Efectivamente, hace muchos años que mi trabajo más estable es el de cuidar y agotar infantes; trabajo que, por cierto, me encanta: con los críos me llevo bien y aprendo muchas cosas, entre ellas, algunas básicas sobre la naturaleza humana. Me encanta, por ejemplo, cuando se empujan violentamente, se quitan los juguetes despiadadamente, y se acercan a mí diciendo: “Nacho, es que no quiere compartir”. Toootal, que el lunes estaba tranquilamente en mi cama, y me despertaron para decirme que el crío que cuido, X, había pillado fiebre y que si podía pasarme la mañana con él. Sin problema. Como X estaba un poco flojo, y aunque pintamos e hicimos puzles, nos pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo viendo la tele, especialmente a su dibujo animado preferido,  Manny manitas. Al par de capítulos de visionado ya estaba yo llenando cuartillas, e inquiriendo sagazmente a la criatura sobre los dibus, mientras el niño me miraba con el mismo estupor con el que yo miraba a la pantalla…

Manny manitas es una serie de la Disney, lo cual ya nos da una información básica ya que todos los productos Disney tienen una huella moral indeleble. En esta serie un “manitas”, un profesional del bricolaje, se dedica a arreglar los miles de desperfectos que surgen en su idílico pueblo, que no es otra cosa que una de las miles de representaciones de la Middle America a la que nos tiene acostumbrado la Disney (ejemplo: la Main Street de todos los parques de atracciones Disney). Lo interesante de la serie es que el personaje principal, Manny Manitas, es bilingüe, o sea, en la versión castellana habla principalmente castellano salpicado con unas cuantas palabras en inglés, y en la versión inglesa al revés, es decir, habla inglés salpicado de unas cuantas palabras de castellano. Esto es importante, porque en la versión doblada se pierde uno de las principales características del personaje: Manny manitas es, tachaaaaan, ¡¡¡mexicano!!!.  Óiganlo en su versión original y si no eso no es un mexicano que baje  Huitzilopochtli y que lo vea…

Que un personaje de la Disney sea mexicano tampoco nos tiene que llenar de sorpresa. De hecho muchas de las pelis de la Disney de los 40s tenían un personaje mexicano o transcurrían en ese país, como Saludos Amigos o The Three Caballeros donde salía José Carioca el loro que fumaba puros representando a Brasil o Panchito Pistoles representando, ay, a México. Sin embargo, es de todos sabido que ese giro de la Disney hacia Sudamérica, justo en el momento en el que triunfaba Xavier Cugat o Carmen Miranda como estrellas del cine de consumo para adultos, era debido a que la Guerra Fría estaba en plena ebullición y que Hollywood intentaba acercarse publicitariamente a los países del sur que corrían el riesgo de caer en la órbita comunista.

¿Qué pretende la Disney esta vez?… Yo, que no soy muy amigo de plantear los temas que relacionan a la política y al cine en términos de consparanoia, es decir, que me parece que no hace falta que los ejecutivos de las grandes productoras se reúnan con los políticos para recibir instrucciones (ya que simplemente unos y otros forman parte de la misma élite, la misma familia, la misma escuela o la misma universidad), me parece que detrás de una serie televisión o detrás de una serie de películas puede que no haya  un plan maestro, pero hay seguro un signo de los tiempos. Y  Manny manitas nos habla de un tema en concreto: cómo percibe la sociedad estadounidense actual la inmigración.  Porque lo más interesante de Manny Manitas es que no sólo es mexicano sino que es un mexicano inmigrante (o cuanto menos, hijo de mexicanos inmigrantes). Es decir, Manny manitas es la primera serie de dibujos protagonizada por inmigrantes. Bien es cierto que aunque en la serie se haya verbalizado la condición de migrantes de alguno de los personajes, Manny nunca alude a ella explícitamente. Sin embargo,  Manny habla castellano perfectamente, su familia tienen nombres castellanos y está rodeado de inmigrantes como Mr. Chu, el director del colegio, Mr. Kunard, un simpático indio, o Mr. Ayala el propietario de la bolera. Mr. Ayala es un personaje muy interesante ya que, aunque sólo salió en el episodio de la bolera, fue uno de los pocos que cito explícitamente su condición de migrante. En el momento que se iba a inaugurar su bolera declaró ante la tele: “Este es el día más importante de mi vida desde que salí de Argentina, y, ¡¡oh!!… el día que tuve a mi hijo Carlos”. Bueno, y, ¿cuál es el problema?.

Efectivamente, ¿cuál es el problema?. Los personajes inmigrantes son muy positivos, los estereotipos están muy matizados y muchas veces lo único que distingue a un personaje inmigrante es su fuerte acento (de hecho los estereotipos raciales de una peli como Cars son mucho más insultantes). Todos tienen trabajos respetables, como el Chief Carlos, que es el jefe de bomberos, y además viéndola los niños americanos aprenden castellano. Aunque, la verdad, respecto a ese punto resultan curiosas las declaraciones del actor que pone la voz a Manny manitas, Wilmer Valderrama , hijo de colombiana y venezolano, país en el que residió durante 13 años, que pueden oír en este video donde dice que la Disney no pretende enseñar castellano sino que las expresiones en este idioma son “parte esencial del personaje” (¿?… vamos que es Mexicano). En esa misma entrevista utiliza una frase que es moneda de cambio de los progresistas americanos, al afirmar que la serie pretende demostrar que América es un “melting pot”… vamos, una cosa de razas mezcladas, de cada uno de un sitio y de personas hechas a tantos por ciento “yo soy 20 % irlandés, un 10% sueco, un 30% mexicano…”.  Pues, repito,  ¿qué problema hay?. ¿Qué no lo veis?, merluzos. La Disney a través de Manmy manitas pone en escena el mito de la integración de los inmigrantes a través de la asimilación capitalista. Esto lo voy a explicar más y mejor, analizando los personajes esenciales de la serie. Pero antes veamos la presentación de la serie donde los podemos ver a todos (aviso: el video es un loop terrible):

KELLY. Permitirme que empiece por un personaje secundario como Kelly que es la dueña de la ferretería del pueblo, negocio al que se acerca Manny casi diariamente para comprar tuercas, canaletas y enchufes… Kelly es simpática y siempre tiene lo que Manny le pide, de hecho, esa una de las bromas eternas de la serie “Kelly, ¿tienes tornillos atuoperforantes para chapas metálicas y maderas duras”, “Oh, claro que sí”, “¡¡Kelly siempre tiene de tooodo!!”. Kelly además siempre suele saludar a Manny en un buen castellano “Hola Manny”, “Hola Kelly”. Kelly es, claro, la cornucopia capitalista, el cuerno de la abundancia de la América contemporánea. América, como la ferretería de Kelly, tiene de todo y en abundancia para ayudar en el progreso del inmigrante. América, de hecho,  es capaz de aprender castellano con tal de vender cuatro tornillos. Lo único que me resulta curioso es que si Manny Manitas fuera un personaje real, y creedme en la Middle America existen muchos mexicanos  dedicándose el bricolaje profesional, en vez de ir a comprar a la tienda de Kelly se acercaría a ese cáncer que son los hipermercados Walmart donde, debido a una gran precariedad laboral, y a unas sospechosas subcontratas podría ser atendido por otros mexicanos en situación de bastante a muy irregular.

MANNY MANITAS. Ya hemos avanzado ciertos aspectos de Manny, como qué proviene, cuanto menos, de una familia migrante (no me gusta el término “inmigrantes de segunda generación”… más que una información sociológica parece una maldición), cosa que podemos apreciar en los nombres de los sobrinos de Manny (“Dieguito”), y en la utilización de expresiones familiares para sus vecinos como “mi abuelito”. A esta cualidad de “migrante” hemos de de sumar la de “prospero”. Manny es un prospero inmigrante, algo que se ejemplifica perfectamente en el vídeo anterior donde veíamos la intro de la serie: Manny construye por si mismo el cartel anunciador que representa el negocio (metonimia, la parte por el todo), pero requiere de la ayuda de todos, sus vecinos, y sus herramientas, para colgarlo. Toda la sociedad ayuda al prospero inmigrante, toda la sociedad apuesta por el caballo ganador. Pero… y ¿las herramientas?. Sí, amigos, Manny, es un empresario con todas las de la ley, ya que en su quehacer diario es ayudado por una serie de herramientas antropomorfizadas: el simpático martillo, una saleroso tornillo de estrella, una llave inglesa juiciosa… y, chicos, aquí tenemos una regla de oro “cuando la Disney antropomorfiza, échate a temblarrrrr”. Las herramientas parlanchinas son, de largo, las grandes estrellas del show, aquellas que más conectan con los niños, ya que son los elementos con los que éstos  se identifican más fácilmente. Dicho en castellano antiguo: los niños son niños, y las herramientas son obreros infantilizados. De hecho estas herramientas riman con las tazas y teteras sirvientes de Beauty and the Beast (1991):

¡¡¡Pero qué bien se lo pasan los señores!!!

Las herramientas quedamos en que son, pues, obreros infantilizados, que no saben volver a casa cuando se pierden, que juegan ruidosamente, que son presa de pasiones incontrolables como los celos (“Nacho, no quiiiere compartir”). Útiles pero desprovistos de un raciocinio que les lleve a pensar que ellas mismas podrían montar el negocio, ya que Manny, pese a ser un manitas raramente se pone manos a la obra, y tan sólo da órdenes actuando como capataz (que irónico que un personaje que se llame Manitas, si te fijas, raramente utiliza las manos). Las herramientas, mientras tanto repiten machaconamente la canción de trabajar todos juntos, canción que se canta en cada episodio y que tiene un innegable sabor latino:

Las herramientas, menos mal, tienen distintas nacionalidades, Pat, el martillo, por ejemplo es un anglosajón, Felipe el destornillador de estrella es, con toda probabilidad, mexicano… como podemos comprobar nada diferencia a las herramientas y a los seres humanos (ambos hablan, tienen sus personalidades diferenciadas, y son útiles), salvo una cosa, unas son herramientas y las otras mandan a herramientas. Es decir, el único aspecto que les diferencia es su clase social. Sin embargo el concepto de clase social era algo, admitámoslo, demasiado sofisticado para un niño de 3 años como el que compartía sillón. Así que ni corto ni perezoso empecé a preguntarle, ante su asombro, el mío, y supongo el estupor de los padres si me pudieran ver por un agujero. Y coño si lo había comprendido:

-          X, majete, Manny Manitas, qué es de las herramientas, ¿su papá, su amigo o su jefe? (lo de su papa no le gustó nada).

-           Su amiiiiig…su jefe. Es su jefe, no su papa.

-           Y… ¿Manny Manitas les paga a las herramientas?

-          Noooo, sólo a Kelly –a lo que me dije, “este crío las ha pillado de todas todas”.

-          Pero, ¿a Manny Manitas le pagan?

-          Si.

Y así me deje a ese crío que es un sol de bueno y de listo, intentando cerrar el círculo de explotación laboral, pero le subió la fiebre y se me durmió.

Aaaaaaspaculaorrrr filll de puuuuuta!!!

MR LOPART. Cuándo se ha afianzado política y económicamente un status, ¿qué otro aspecto creéis que debe ser machacado?. Exacto. Mr Lopart es el personaje no heteronormativo de Manny Manitas, vamos, que es una loca de cuidado. Tiene una tienda de caramelos, vive con un gato de angora, y, esto es muy interesante, siempre se niega a recibir la ayuda de Manny Manitas, con lo cual cada cosa que acaba construyendo por si mismo se rompe en mil pedazos. Lo que podría ser un canto a la comunidad y en contra del individualismo acaba a través de la Disney en el mismo sitio de siempre, en un reaccionarismo terrible, en este caso sexual y de género. Vamos a ver, Manny Manitas en qué tiene tanto éxito y Mr Lopart en qué fracasa estrepitosamente: en construir cosas con las manos. ¿Y qué es lo más importante que uno puede construir?, su propia masculinidad, que al no estar marcada fisiológicamente (a los hombres no les viene la regla como paso hacia la madurez), es algo que se construye culturalmente. Mr Lopart es el heredero de un corto que le dio el primer Oscar a la Disney, Los tres cerditos, que es la historia de cómo tres amigos construyen su masculinidad: hay dos terriblemente afeminados que construyen su casa / masculinidad de paja y palos, y que no resiste el ataque del lobo, es decir, el vicio. No se pierdan los detalles de las casas, los posters y las figuritas, y tampoco pierdan ojo al lobo disfrazado de judío… ¡¡¡madre mía, que corto!!!

Mr Lopart como los cerditos es un personaje cómico, un hombre fracasado, una loca. A lo que se ha de sumar un dato que me resulta muy llamativo, la elección de un actor como Wilmer Valderrama que no sólo da voz a Manny y es el representante de la serie en la vida real sino que encima, como todos sabéis, tiene un pene enorme. Y lo del pene no lo digo por la hipertrofia de sexual de las clases socialmente degeneradas, que diría Roman Gubern, sino que lo dice el mismo, y lo pudieron disfrutar sus amantes famosas, gente de la talla de Mandy Moore y Lindsay Lohan. Eso sí, le gusta la serie porque Disney tiene unos standars morales muy elevados.

Resumiendo, Manny manitas es uno de los productos culturales que resumirán el mandando de Obama, el giro hacia el humanismo progresista pero manteniendo los valores de mercado. Terminamos con una frase de la wiki: “Valderrama prepara una serie de comedia dirigida a toda la familia que se transmitirá por Nickelodeon, el programa tiene por nombre Earth to Pablo y tratará sobre una familia normal que espera albergar en su casa a un estudiante suramericano de intercambio y en su lugar recibe a un marciano”. Ayyy, Dios mío.

I’ve recently gotten into (Besides the BBC channel) Teen Nick. Is that lame since I’m not a teen anymore(22) ? Well, I have been watching a ridiculous amount of Degrassi and that 70’s show(Eric Foreman is my hero): Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama . The funny thing is, I never watched that 70’s show when it was actually on. Degrassi on the other hand I did watch a little junior year of highschool.

This season of Degrassi has been  intriguing, I think it maybe the newbies on the show, some of which who have already hit the two season mark, and have had  pretty convincing performances: Argiris Karras, Samantha Munro, Raymond Ablack, Melinda Shankar…etc.

The show has been touching on issues, that teens and adults  both deal with.

A série é inspirada na vida de Cesar Millan, conhecido mundialmente pelo seu talento como treinador de cães. Cesar comanda há 5 anos o programa, “The Dog Whisperer”, no National Geographic Channel, que mostra ele adestrando cachorros de pessoas famosas como Oprah Winfrey, entre outros.

Walderrama será Cesar, a série vai mostrar o lado engraçado da vida de um adestrador, enfrentando cachorros nada bonzinhos. A série terá produção-executiva de Emily Kapnek (Hung).

Fez eera um dos melhores personagens de That’s 70s Show, esse sucesso não aconteceria sem o talento de Walerrama para comédia, o blog torce para que a série faça muito sucesso.

Osbourne, Kelly — Ozzy and Sharon’s little girl has revealed that she turned down an offer to pose nude in Playboy. And apparently this is the second time she’s been asked. I’m confused as to which is the more interesting story — that Playboy really wants Kelly Osborne to get naked for the magazine, or that a D-List celebrity announcing that she won’t pose nude is big news.

Stone, Oliver — Spanish internet provider Terra Networks supposedly paid director Oliver Stone $75,000 for a speaking engagement Monday night, only to see him go ballistic on the internet, calling internet users “Philistines” and saying that no film on the internet will ever be considered “fine art.” Obviously, Oliver Stone has never seen my favorite movie, Haitian Weatherman.

Valderrama, Wilmer – FOX has announced its plans to air a half-hour comedy starring Wilmer Valderrama as a Cesar Milan-style “Dog Whisperer.” Finally, FOX has been reading my letters. I’ve been saying for years that a hilarious sitcom idea would be to cast Wilmer Valderrama as a dog whisperer. Thumbs up!

Colombian singer Fanny Lu, is such an amazing person.  I got to meet her and she was just so energetic and fun.  I didn’t want her to leave cause she was just signing and dancing all over the place.  She is super adorable.

The Del Mar races are all about hats, horses and winning the big bucks. 944 magazine sent me and Aubs to Opening Day last week to document all things glamorous, “where the turf meets the surf.”

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean, “That ’70s Show” actor Wilmer Valderrama, Carl’s Jr. bikini babe and “The Hills” hottie Audrina Patridge, and a handful of NFL stars I can’t identify showed up to kick off racing season at the track.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s 2009 racing season kicked off Wednesday!  Thousands of people showed up to see the horses and the One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest.  As always, it was a great place to people-watch, and if you watched closely enough, you could see a few celebs in the mix!

ORIGINAL TV SHOW CHIPS

Hollywood has greenlighted another surefire turkey. A CHiPs movie starring Wilmer Valderamma is apparently in the works. Valderamma would play the “Ponch” character popularized by Erik Estrada.

Valderrama is being cast in the role of a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer even though he says he currently can’t ride a motorcycle,

“I hear it’s really hard, but Erik Estrada said he would help me.”

Valderrama starred in the sitcom “That ’70s show,” and has had zero success in starting a movie career. He is famous for sleeping with more starlets than virtually anyone in Hollywood history. Valderrama has had sex with Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Mandy Moore, Jaime Pressley, Lindsay lohan, Jennifer Love Hewitt and at least one Olsen twin.

WILMER VADERRAMA

FFANY  stands for Fashion Footwear Association of New York.  It’s like the mini fashion week for shoes.  Honestly, it’s not usually very exciting though I hear in the old days it was something else.  However, this season’s has been something special.  It started when I received some shoes I’d been waiting for night and day for weeks.  We’ve had and continue to have amazing success with the Vanquish in all the beautiful materials.  A while back when I’d met Taboo and The Black Eyed Peas, he mentioned we should do a collabo.  Light bulbs flickering and Boom Boom Pow, I kindly asked Larry to put some of our best materials on our newest and soon to be hottest style, the Zeto for Tab.  And boy did he deliver.  Here are the results.

And Captain Lawrence outdoes himself again.  So after what turned out to be a really productive afternoon (read wine and cheese consumption) at the showroom with Zappos, I had to meet Taboo at the store to present him with these shoes for our project and on the way I saw Shawn Pean, my buyer from Saks waiting for a cab with two of his colleagues so Marco, Chris and I scooped him and his crew up in the Jumpmobile (an old school Benz ML).  Mind you, I had only seen these the day before and so they were truly making their debut but of course I had to show Shawn and of course, he loved them!  More light bulbs and we we decided we’d have to do an event with BEP at Saks and introduce these looks there.  Brilliance.

When we got the store, Taboo showed up and we showed him the new illness.  He literally said, “OH FUHSCHNIZZLES.”  Just kidding.  He said something else and was totally floored.  I told him about introducing our collab at Saks and he was all over it.

After that we hit up Richie Rich’s party for Chris Coffee at Garden in the Sky at the Cooper Square Hotel.  Great party, open bar and the weather was perfect for it.  I’d been wondering what the building was.  It’s got a really interesting design.

So last night we hit up the Black Eyed Peas album release party at Griffin (old PM) in Meatpacking which was another dope party.  Taboo was kind of enough to put me on the list to an otherwise completely exclusive event.  Top shelf open bar and we saw just about every celebrity in the world there and I got to introduce Shawn and the Saks crew to the Peas.  Great karma.

Rihanna came too and later performed with them onstage.

Tab introduced me to Fergie who was a sweetheart.

Wilmer Valderrama had come to the store earlier that day and wore our boots!

It was an interesting couple of days.  Now I need some rest!

While Wilmer Valderrama is best known for  his role as “Fez” or his player ways, I recently learned there was another side to this Venezuelan cutie. I ran into him and a host of other Latino celebs while attanding the annual Cielo Latino AIDS fundraiser gala. That’s right, gala AKA I had to get all dressed up.

Cielo Latino is an annual event thrown by the Latino Commission on AIDS to raise money and awareness about AIDS as it affects our community. It’s the largest fundraiser event trageted specifically to us and it was an honor for me to attend and rub elbows with the likes of Rosie Perez, Wilmer Valderrama, Dayana Mendoza (Former Miss Universe), Lupe Ontiveros and MTV Tr3’s own Carlos Santos.

Ok, so I had a start struck moment with Wilmer AKA Fez. He’s so friggin cute in person (though a lil short for me). I harrassed his bodyguard relentlessy until he took a picture of us together. Then I realized the flash wasn’t working and I started all over again with someone else’s camera (pic coming soon). But long before those shenanigans, I did actually speak to Wilmer on his activism and his message for our youth regarding AIDS. Check out what he had to say under after the jump…How do you feel about being picked to co-host the event?
It’s really an honor. Rosie Perez and Dayana Mendoza are great friends of mine. It’s very special to come together to not only celebrate our Latin culture, but also educate the public about the importance of HIV awareness.

Have you been affected personally by the disease?
Yes. I have done volunteer work and met countless children that have the disease and who have touched my heart. The majority of the people affected aren’t just getting the disease through sexual relations. There are a number of ways to be contracted with the illness and for me it’s important to support events like these to come together and try to take everything seriously.

Speaking of visiting hospitals, do you have any upcoming volunteer work you want to talk about?
No, not right now. I have traveled to Iraq and several countries to do volunteer work and right now I am working on a movie about post tramatic stress syndrom, which is a very important topic as well. There are a lot of soliders that are coming back from war with a lot of mental and physical issues. The movie follows two soliders that are battling to get adjusted to life in the States after war. We filmed in New Mexico with America Ferrera. It’s a very important movie titled “The Dry Land.”

Any other projects?
Yes. I just wrapped a movie that comes out in September called “Days of Wrath” with Lawrence Fishburne. The movie talks about violence in our neighborhoods.

What was the best part of filming it?
Playing the bad guy. I was the villian in this movie.

You like playing the bad guy?
Well in the beginning of my career I always did comedic roles. It’s important for me to keep it different.

Do you have a message for the youth?
Yes. Be strong. To help each other and educate each other. We are all in this struggle together.

1. Rob Bigwood is a professionl arm wrestler. That’s right, and he’s vegan. Rob is a 26 year old Brooklynite who has been winning titles and making a name for himself in the arm wrestling community. Watch out for this guy, and for my interview with him soon!

2. Owain Yeoman and Jamie Bamber are only two of the Discerning Brutes that PETA has featured in their recent campaigns. Jamie, who plays Lee “Apollo” Adama in Battlestar Galactica is calling attention to the use of bear-fur on the hats of the Royal Guards in the UK. Owian, star of The Mentalist, is featured in a vegetarian testimnial ad, and his video has an eloquent expression of why this dude is veg.

Wilmer Valderrama hosted a party at LAVO last night in Las Vegas.  In some pictures, Wilmer looks SUSPECT as hell.  Oh well, it looks like he had a ball, and we do hope that’s the only kind of ball he had.

Wilmer Valderrama paid New York’s Generation X Garden a visit, to help the students from NY’s Earth School plant some greenery. We know some of you ladies think Wilmer is a good looking fellow and everything, but in some of these pics he looks SWEETER than Christmas Kool-Aid.

Alright, this week’s top 5 list is “Bad Job Movies”. The Filmspotting list of the same name was inspired by Adventureland. By way of setting this up, I just want to say I didn’t include any movies about prostitution. Don’t really know why, just did. I guess that could be a list on its own. Ok, so without any further ado, here is my list. 

5. Fast Food Nation
This movie is the very definition of a bad job movie. Poor Catalina Sandino Moreno and Wilmer Valderrama come to America expecting a great new life and what do they get, crappy jobs at a horrifying meat company. But they are not the only ones with a bad job in this movie. Basically everyone has a bad job here, no matter if they admit it or not.

4. My Life Without Me
The only reason this film isn’t farther up in the list is that Ann (Sarah Polley)’s job isn’t necessarily the focus of this film. Now, I haven’t seen My Life Without Me in a long time but I do remember that Ann’s family’s life was completely miserable. They are living in a trailer in her mom’s backyard and she has to work endless hours just to earn any kind of living. And that’s not even mentioning her disease we find out about pretty early on in the film. 

3. The Magdalene Sisters
I suppose this is technically a cheat because the girls in The Magdalene Sisters don’t actually work at the convent as such. By that I mean they don’t get paid for their work other than some food and a squalid living existence. But they do work all day long under inconceivable conditions so I would definitely consider this a bad job movie. Basically, the movie follows 5 Irish girls (I think) who are forced to enter so-called “Magdalene Asylums” because they are deemed “fallen” by their families. There they are forced to work for hours in the laundries that the convent operates. What’s more upsetting than some of the terrible things we see on screen here is the fact that the last of these “Magdalene Asylums” in Ireland closed its doors in 1996. Freaking ‘96! It boggles my mind.

2. The Good Girl
While Justine (Jennifer Aniston)’s job might not be quite as terrible as some of the other people’s on this list, it is still a bad job. Her life is already drab and monotonous  and she has a terrible husband, her job makes it even worse. And even when she meets and falls in love with her co-worker Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal) things become even worse for her.

1. Bread and Roses
Not surprisingly this list ends with me piling even more praise on Adrien Brody. But it just has to be said, he is a great actor and this film features, in my opinion, one of his best performances. The story is simple. Maya (Pilar Padilla) comes to America from Mexico to come work with her older sister who lives there with her American husband and family and works as a cleaner in an office building. However Maya soon discovers the harsh realities of a job that isn’t unionized and so enlists Sam (Brody) to help her unionize. Other than Brody, the film features some great performances by Pilar Padilla and Elpidia Carillo as her older sister Rosa. George Lopez is also great in the role of the villain, the sisters’ boss. While the film sometimes gets a little repetitive in the preaching about unionizing, it shows us what can happen when the main character choses to fight against their terrible job.

Honorable mentions: Stranger Than Fiction, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Ensemble C’est Tout (Hunting and Gathering) and Role Models.

Over the weekend, Lindsay announced in garbled Twitter posts that she been dumped by Samantha Ronson, her girlfriend of more than a year. Sam Ronson was so fed up with the starlet’s shenanigans that she’s even had her locks changed to keep Lindsay out of the home they share together.

So what’s next for Miss Lohan? Perhaps she’ll cope with this latest personal drama by going out with a new guy–that’s right, a guy. After all, she’s has plenty of high-profile straight romances, including Aaron Carter, Wilmer Valderrama and Jared Leto.
