Dragon Tiger Gate is a martial arts school in Hong Kong that uses martial arts to help the poor advance themselves, such as training street orphans, and that has become much loved as a result. Movies based on comic books aren’t expected to be deep on any level, but Dragon Tiger Gate goes to the ranks of a respectable storyline that borders on impressive.  I could actually spend more time discussing the hair of the actors in this film than the actual plot. Seriously, the wig makers and hairstylists obviously spent more time fretting over the details on the cast’s hair follicles than the writers in charge of adapting the script. The action was also directed by Donnie Yen himself, which shows as he is now experienced and mature in his style. Honestly speaking though, he still has a long way to go to catch Yuen Wo Ping.

It’s essentially the story of two brothers, Dragon and Tiger Wong, who are separated when they are young by the chance death of their parents and are brought up individually by opposing factions. A chance encounter in a restaurant brings the two brothers together over a fight with a rival triad gang. He yearns to learn from Master Wong and so tries to join Dragon Tiger Gate. Meanwhile over at the Jiang Hu hideout Kun has decided to retire from the gang. But it does not go down well at all with the Jiang Hu boss Shibumi, who then decides to wage war on everyone with his own unique form of cape assisted power kung fu.

So what does Dragon Tiger Gate do well? Well, the promotional materials promise a load of martial arts action and the film certainly delivers that. The costume and sets design is a nod to the comics. Sets such as the ‘Tiger Dragon Gate’, ‘Japanese restaurant’ and ‘Inn’ looks as though they are practically lifted out from the pages from the manga. The inclusion of hand-drawn comics-like images serving as backgrounds has a nice, nostalgia touch. Needless to say, you won’t be spending a whole lot of time trying to figure out what is happening in Dragon Tiger Gate. It’s a basic movie, constructed from basic plots, with its one saving grace being the intricate action choreography by Donnie Yen.

Giving credit where credit is due, the only real reason why “Dragon Tiger Gate” even gets a passing grade is thanks to the plentiful action. Which seems to leave director Wilson Yip in the cold. For me, the fact that he is a 40 year old guy playing 20 and, unlike his young co-stars, all too aware of the days when his talents would have been better showcased, is kinda’ sad. Maybe that is why they relied so much on CGI. Reliance on heavy CGI just distracts and takes away from the visceral feel one wants from flying feet and pounding fists.  Overall the movie is a nice piece of comic book escapism which could really use a good producer/director. I’d say watch it for the fight scenes (especially the first big one).

Flash Point, the third collaboration between Donnie Yen and director Wilson Yip. Like most Donnie Yen action movies, the cops-and-robbers stuff is merely filler material until the Third Act, when Yen is allowed to do what he does best, and what Donnie Yen does best is whoop ass like the Terminator on speed. Flash Point is straighforward action cinema, going back to its roots in the 80s. If you are looking for a plot or well drawn characters, then you really should skip this one.

Detective Sergeant of Serious Crimes Unit, Jun (played by Yen) detests crime and his lifelong nemeses are a Vietnamese gang of three brothers. In order to further infiltrate the gang and fight them from within, Jun has planted a mole, Wilson (Louis Koo), who has managed to gain the complete trust of the gang. Ma gets vein-busting upset thanks to his new predicament: partner Wilson (Louis Koo) is on undercover assignment, and the bad guys he’s assigned to are a particularly surly lot who probably would have no hesitation about offing Wilson if they knew he was a mole. However, Wilson’s dual role is exposed and resulting battles leave him handicapped for life. Jun is pissed, and beatdowns commence.

Not surprisingly, this film has a simple story, littered with stock characters and situations that lack creativity and sometimes credibility. Yip, who has been pumping out a variety of genre pictures in Hong Kong since the mid-’90s, creates another successful notch on his belt with a film Hong Kong enthusiasts can get behind. My main gripe with this movie was I didn’t know why Flash Point was only 80 some-odd minutes long. This is a film that demands to be told in something approaching two hours.

Flash Point only seems to aim at pleasing action fans, with intense action sequence begins with a standoff using automatic weapons that help to rid the cast of unwanted extras and splatters the camera lens with blood. But when the bullets run out, Yen and Chou lock into a bone-crunching and devastating hand-to-hand brawl that features some of these martial artists’ most brutal fight choreography caught on film. How can I not recommend this? Hong Kong films have been sprouting up a lot in my reviews, and I can’t ignore their awesomeness any longer.

I spent a few hours over the past two Saturdays catching selected entries in the Singapore International Filmfest. 

I bought quite a number of tickets (I think for 8 shows with at least two tickets each so I can invite one or more friends) but didn’t get to use all of them due to time constraints.

Anyway here are the ones I found interesting (took the synopsis from the SIFF booklet):

Short films:

HUSH BABY (3 mins, Singapore)

(A sheet of paper, a pair of scissors, and a fussy baby in a battle of wits)

Overturning the popular association of animation with children’s entertainment, Hush Baby depicts a baby’s struggle against confinement and restriction. The many expressive faces of a baby are brought to life with dark humour and wit as the film imaginatively explores a different facet of animation.

MADAM CHAN (20 mins, Singapore)

(An elderly woman spends her entire holiday complaining about her family and irritating the friends traveling with her)

Director: Wilson Yip, Producer: Lui Wai Yu, Screenplay: Wilson Yip, Cast: Cheong Soon Foon, Ong Xiu Ping, Chiu Wai Yin

Filled with endless gripes about her familial troubles, Madam Chan joins her friends the Wongs on a local tour of Singapore, much to the annoyance of Mr Wong. As the group travels from one tourist spot to another, the truth behind Madam Chan’s complaints emerges, unveiling the vulnerability beneath her crotchety exterior.

SWIMMING LESSON (13 mins, Singapore)

(An overprotective mother gains new understanding from an old memory)

(A dreamlike film about ordinary Singaporeans struggling to find their joy)

A shy, obsessive-compulsive neighbor reluctantly helps his neighbor, only to let his heart get in the way. An air stewardess on Merlion Air returns home to a life without love and hope. An uptight army officer finds himself sliding steadily into the crack between his private and his military life, while his estranged girlfriend laments her life before a photocopying machine. Brian Gothong Tan’s debut feature film is a polyphonic fusion of quiet realism and flights of fantasy that bring into focus the regrets and disappointments that Singaporeans swallow everyday.

Wilson Yip, 2008

Nato a fine ‘800 e morto nei primi anni ‘70, Ip Man è stato uno dei più importanti esponenti del Wing Chun Kung Fu nonché maestro del grande Bruce Lee. Il film di Wilson Yip si propone essenzialmente come un film di arti marziali ma anche come un biopic del Gran Maestro focalizzato nel periodo che va dagli anni trenta alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. In quegli anni il Fushan era, non solo un florido centro economicamente sviluppato, ma anche il luogo d’ incontro e crescita per le varie discipline di arti marziali. La Via dei Dojo era la piazza dove si potevano trovare le varie scuole, tutte tranne quella del Maestro Ip, contrario ad avere allievi, che viveva in una grande casa con la sua famiglia. Tutto cambia dopo l’invasione giapponese: il Paese cade in una profonda crisi economica che non può che coinvolgere anche Fushan e i suoi abitanti. Anche il Maestro Ip è costretto ad abbandonare la sua casa e a trovare un lavoro per sfamare la sua famiglia. Il momento del riscatto arriva quando un generale giapponese decide di mettere alla prova le arti marziali giapponesi contro quelle cinesi, sfida alla quale il Maestro Ip è costretto da tragici eventi ad accettare.

Quella che Wilson Yip mette in scena non è solo una guerra tra due popoli per una supremazia puramente politica. La lotta più forte e più evidente è quella per la supremazia culturale: i giapponesi vogliono schiacciare i cinesi, vogliono annichilirli la dove sono più forti, in quelle arti marziali che hanno radici profonde nella loro storia, solo così la sottomissione sarà completa. Si può rimproverare a Yip una rappresentazione di parte della storia, che vede i giapponesi dipinti unicamente come brutti e cattivi invasori, mentre il popolo cinese unito, orgoglioso e pronto alla lotta. La cosa non stupisce se si pensa che la ferita tra i due popoli è aperta e difficilmente rimarginabile.

Nonostante questo piccolo, e se vogliamo anche piuttosto ignorabile difetto, Ip Man è un gran film di arti marziali e il merito va sicuramente alle coreografie di Sammo Hung e alla grande abilità del veterano Donnie Yen nel ruolo del Maestro Ip. Ma delle belle coreografie e degli attori esperti a cosa servirebbero se non fossero supportati da una regia all’ altezza? Wilson Yip sa come rispondere a questa domanda ma soprattutto sa come girare sequenze di combattimento che valorizzino l’apporto tecnico di Hung e Yen, ed infatti la macchina da presa non perde un solo movimento o un ‘acrobazia (nelle quali si nota l’utilizzo evidente ma non invadente di cavi) durante i combattimenti. Se a questo aggiungiamo una bella ed elegante ricostruzione storica (soprattuto nella prima parte) e la presenza, seppur in un ruolo minore, del grandissimo Simon Yam, abbiamo un film che soddisfa sotto tutti i punti di vista.

Crocodile tears? Xu Jiao wins Best New Performer for CJ7

Just a quick note about this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, which took place this Saturday. Wilson Yip’s biopic Ip Man, about the martial arts legend, took Best Picture, with Ann Hui winning Best Director for The Way We Are, her docudrama about the New Territories town of Tin Shui Wai.  The Way We Are, with its mostly non-professional cast, also won three other awards including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay. Nick Cheung (The Beast Stalker) nabbed his first Best Actor statue, adding it to his award from the Hong Kong Film Critics’ Society. Cute little girl Xu Jiao won Best New Performer for her crossdressing turn as Stephen Chow Sing-Chi’s son in Chow’s sci-fi blockbuster CJ7. Unfortunately, according to the Golden Rock’s liveblog she gave a horribly fake acceptance speech that included fake crying. I guess child stars are the same all over the world.

Interestingly, in a repeat of the Golden Horse Awards last year, John Woo’s lavish epic Red Cliff was shut out of the major acting and directing awards (including Tony Leung Chi-Wai’s failure to win his sixth Best Actor award). Red Cliff did clean up in several creative categories such as Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects, winning five awards. Apparently this year’s nominations were only for Red Cliff 1–Red Cliff 2 will be eligible again next year so maybe then it will make out a little better in the major awards. Ironically, Red Cliff is probably the only film among the award winners that will receive international distribution.

Poor Simon Yam, nominated for Best Actor for Johnnie To’s Sparrow, went home empty-handed again. But he got to wear a natty two-toned sharkskin suit, white spats, and a spider-motif tie, and looked way too dashing for a man in his fifties. Sadly, Sparrow also lost (to Red Cliff) for Best Film Score, which just goes to show that not everyone appreciated its awesome Martin Denny/Michel Legrand/Henry Mancini homage.

Sha Po Lang or SPL is one of the best action films this decade. It is the best work of Donnie Yen so far. Not as famous as Jackie Chan and Jet Li, Donnie Yen is an action star with comparable charisma and talent. If you really want to watch a real action film, I recommend SPL.

Jay Chou ou Aaron Kwok pourraient bien incarner Bruce Lee à l’écran. C’est en tout cas ce qu’envisage Wilson Yip pour la sequel de son film Ip Man.

En effet, alors que le film vient de sortir dans les salles obscures, le réalisateur hongkongais songe déjà à sa suite qui devrait s’intéresserer plus particulièrement à la relation entre le maître et son plus célèbre disciple. Le projet qui verra le retour de Donnie Yen dans le rôle principal, dépendra néanmoins, du succès du premier film.

Best to worst

The White Dragon, dir. Wilson Yip, 2004

Francis plays a blind swordsman opposite spoiled and vain rich girl Cecilia Cheung in this 21st century martial arts redux. Full of jokey anachronisms and mo le tau humor, the film is nonetheless affecting due to the charisma and chemistry of the two leads. Francis channels Zatoichi with a twist–he’s a sensitive and noble, lovelorn guy.

He also battles a very bad haircut but miraculously manages to become more and more attractive, even though he spends half the film with his eyes rolled up in his head. The scene where he discovers that Cecilia thinks he’s handsome is classic–charming, funny and convincing. Kudos to Cecilia Cheung (who won Best Actress at the HK Film Awards) for keeping her bratty character light and appealing. Wilson Yip continues his schizophrenic directing career, combining wuxia, comedy, romance and satire in classic HK style.

Dancing Lion, dir. Marco Mak & Francis Ng, 2007

Kinda dumb, unfortunately. Sitcom-style humor about a dysfunctional family that starts a lion dancing business and becomes a HK phenomenom. Francis co-directs and stars as a forty-year-old hip hop wannabe dope.

Anthony Wong is amazing as a 72-year-old lion dance master–he’s very fun to watch in an otherwise dippy film.

หนังเล่าเรื่องที่ไม่ซับซ้อนอะไรนัก สงครามระหว่างตำรวจที่มีตัวละครอย่าง เจ้าพ่อผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ (หงจินเป่า) หัวหน้าทีมตำรวจหน่วยปราบปราม ที่ทำได้ทุกอย่างเพื่อโค่นฝ่ายตรงกันข้าม (เยิ่นต๊ะหัว) ตำรวจหน้าใหม่ในทีม เถรตรง เลือดร้อน (Donnie Yen) และนักฆ่า (อู๋จิ้ง) เทียบกันหนังสงครามระหว่างตำรวจกับมาเฟียที่ดังที่สุดในรอบ 3 – 4 ปีที่ผ่านมาอย่าง Infernal Affairs แล้ว SPL แตกต่างกันราวฟ้า กับดิน เรื่องแรกนั้นได้ชื่อว่าเป็นหนังที่เน้นการหักเหลี่ยมเฉือนคม แต่ SPL นั้นความขัดแย้งแก้ไขกันได้ด้วยการสาดกำปั้น ระดมหมัดเข้าหากัน

หนังพยายามจะสร้างแง่มุมที่ซับซ้อนด้วยการใส่รายละเอียดเชิงลึก ไปในตัวละครหลายๆ ตัว ไม่ว่าจะเป็นตัวละครของเยิ่นต๊ะหัวที่มีลูกเลี้ยง ซึ่งเป็นลูกสาวของอดีตพยานที่เค้าปกป้องไว้ไม่ได้ แถมยังป่วยเป็นมะเร็งตายได้ทุกเวลา เพราะฉะนั้นการปราบแก็งมาเฟียนี้จึงเป็นภารกิจสุดท้ายในชีวิต ที่ต้องทำให้สำ เร็จโดยแทบจะไม่เลือกวิธีการ ตัวละครของหงจินเป่าดูเหื้อมโหด แต่กลับมีแง่มุมที่อ่อนโยน (และอาจจะอ่อนแอด้วย) มีลูกน้อยเพิ่งคลอด และภรรยาที่ดูเหมือนจะไม่ได้ล่วงรู้งานของสามีเลย

จะว่าไปแล้ว SPL เป็นหนังที่มี ช่องโหว่อยู่ไม่น้อยเลย โดยเฉพาะในเรื่องความสมเหตุสมผล มาเฟียใหญ่ที่มีลูกน้องเป็นฝูงดันเสี่ยงตาย มาอัดกับตำรวจ แบบไม่มีอะไรจะเสีย การต่อเนื่องระหว่างอารมณ์ดราม่า กับความระทึกในฉากแอ็กชั่นก็ดูเหมือนจะทำได้ไม่เต็มร้อย นอกจากนั้นเหมือนว่าหนังยังไม่สามารถอธิบายประเด็นต่างๆ ในเรื่องได้อย่างที่ควรจะเป็น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวละครต่างๆ รวมถึงรายละเอียดบางด้านของตัวละคร เช่น ภูมิหลังของตัวละครที่แสดงโดย Donnie Yen ที่ถึงแม้จะมีฉาก Flashback ของตัวละครตัวนี้แต่ก็ไม่ได้อธิบายอะไรมาก

ถึงแม้จะมีจุดบกพร่องอยู่บ้าง แต่สิ่งที่ผู้สร้างอย่าง Wilson Yip และ Donnie Yen ทำเพื่อกลบช่องโหว่ ช่องว่างเหล่านั้นได้จนหมดสิ้นก็คือ การสร้างฉากแอ็กชั่นระดับยอดขึ้นมา เป็นฉากแอ็กชั่นระดับที่ถึงขั้นน่าตกตะลึก และถึงขั้นโดดเด่นที่สุดในรอบหลายปีที่ผ่านมา เทียบกับหนังกังฟูเก่าๆ SPL ก็มีฉากแอ็กชั่นไม่ได้มากมายนัก ตัวละครไม่ได้ลุกขึ้นมาซัดกันทุกๆ 5 นาที และฉากต่อสู้แต่ละครั้งก็ไม่ได้ยาวเกิน 3 นาทีแบบหนังกังฟูสมัยยุค 70 – 80 สำหรับ SPL มีฉากแอ็กชั่นแบบเต็มเม็ดเต็มหน่วยแค่ 3 ฉากเท่านั้น แต่ละฉากก็ไม่ได้ยาวยืดเหมือนหนังกังฟูในอดีต แต่แค่นี้ก็เพียงพอในการสนองความต้องการของแฟนๆ หนังกังฟู ฉากแอ็กชั่นที่เด่นที่สุดในหนัง 3 ฉากได้แก่

Wu Jing Vs. Ken Chang ฉากเปิดตัว ตัวละครที่แสดงโดยอู๋จิง มือสังหารของเจ้าพ่อ ที่คอยเก็บเหล่าๆ ตำรวจ Ken Chang เป็นใครคงไม่ใช่ประเด็นสำคัญเพราะในฉากนี้เค้า มีบทบาทในการเป็นกระสอบทรายเท่านั้น อู๋จิงเริ่มต้นการ “ซ้อม” คู่ต่อสู้ชุดใหญ่ด้วย การขวางมีดใส่ ต่อด้วยกระโดดลอยตัวเตะก้านคอ หลังจากนั้นทั้งหมัด มือก็สาดเข้าใส่คู่ต่อสู้แบบ ไม่ยั่ง ก่อนจะตามมากับชุดใหญ่ ของจริง กับการะดมฟันด้วยคมมีด ชนิดนับแผลไม่ไหว

Donnie Yen Vs. Wu Jing ด้วยวัย ความหนุ่มแน่น แล้วฉากต่อสู้ระหว่างอู๋จิง กับ Donnie Yen น่าจะเป็นฉากที่คนรอดูมากที่สุดในเรื่อง และหลายๆ คนอาจจะผิดหวัง เล็กๆ เพราะทั้งสองไม่ได้สู้กับด้วย เพลงมวยเพลงเตะสวย แต่เป็นการต่อสู้ด้วยอาวุธอย่างมีดสั้น กับกระบองตำรวจ แต่ไม่ต้องห่วงว่าจะไม่มัน เพราะฉากนี้เต็มไปด้วยการออกแบบที่สุดยอด และความเร็วจนตาดูแทบไม่ทัน

Donnie Yen Vs. Sammo Hung ฉากสุดท้ายไครแมกซ์ของเรื่อง เป็นของรุ่นใหญ่ Donnie Yen กับหงจินเป่า ทั้งประเคนเท้า และหมัดใส่กันแบบไม่มียั่ง จนไปถึงการกอดรัดฟัดเหวี้ยงแบบมวยปล้ำ จนข้าวของประกอบฉาก กระจัดกระจาย เป็นฉากต่อสู้ที่เต็มไปด้วยความหนักหน่วง และรุ่นแรง ไม่มีลีลา ฟุ่มเฟือย ไม่มีการแสดงท่าโอ้อวด ในวิชาของตน เป็นการต่อสู้เพื่อเอาชีวิตรอด และพรากชีวิตฝ่ายตรงกันข้าม แต่สุดท้ายเหมือนว่าจะไม่มีใครเป็นผู้ชนะที่แท้จริงเลย

หลังจากเฉินหลงเริ่มแก่ หลี่เหลียงเจี๋ยก็เริ่มหันไปซึ้งกันรสพระธรรม จนมีข่าวว่าจะเลิกเล่นหนังออกมาเรื่อยๆ ดูเหมือนว่า Donnie Yen น่าจะเป็นดาราแอ็กชั่นที่ร้อนแรงที่สุดในรอบ 2 – 3 ปีที่ผ่านมาของฮ่องกง นอกจากแสดงแล้ว Donnie Yen ยังทำงานเบื้องหลังมากมาย ทั้งการกำกับคิวบู๊ให้กับหนังจากต่างประเทศ ทั้งญี่ปุ่น (Princess Blade) และอเมริกา (Blade 2) แม้กระทั่งการกำกับภาพยนตร์ Donnie Yen ก็ผ่านมาไม่ใช้น้อยหนังเรื่อง Legend of Wolf ของเค้าได้รับการยกย่องว่ามีคิวบู๊ที่สุดยอด ผสมกับเรื่องราวที่ท้าทายคนดูเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เพราะหนังเรื่องนั้นเต็มไปด้วยเนื้อเรื่องที่มึนงง ดูจบยังแทบจับต้นชนปลายไม่ถูกเลย

ถึงแม้ Legend of Wolf จะมีคำวิจารณ์ที่ปนแปกันระหว่างดีกับแย่ แต่ก็เป็นข้อพิสูจน์ว่า Donnie Yen ไม่ได้สนใจแค่การออกแบบคิวบู๊ แต่ยังให้ความสำคัญกับเนื้อหาของหนังด้วย ในหนังเรื่อง SPL นี้ เค้าได้พิสูจน์ถึงความสามารถอีกครั้ง ทั้งในฐานนะของดารา และคนทำหนังไปพร้อมๆ กันเลย

หงจินเป่ากลับมาเล่นหนังแอ็กชั่นดีๆ อีกครั้งหลังจากหายหน้าหายตาไปนาน ดูเหมือนว่ากาลเวลาจะไม่ได้ทำให้ ความสามารถในการเล่นฉากบู๊ของหงจินเป่า ลดไปเท่าไหร่ แน่นอนว่าความคล่องตัว ของหนุ่มใหญ่ร่างยักคงจะต้องลดน้อยไปตามวัยที่มากขึ้น แต่ผลงานใน SPL ของหงจินเป่ายังถือว่าน่าพอใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เทียบแล้วดาราหนุ่มหน้าใหม่หลายๆ คนยังเทียบไม่ติด นอกจากนั้น บทบาทในเรื่องยังถือเป็นการพิสูจน์ความสามารถในด้านการแสดง บทที่หลากหลายกว่าเดิมในการรับบท ตัวร้ายที่ดูเคร่งครึมจริงจัง ผิดกับสมัยหนุ่มที่หงจินเป่ามักจะ ได้รับบทตลกโปกฮาเป็นประจำ

ถึงแม้ดารากังฟูลายครามทั้งสองคนจะมีผลงานที่ยอดเยี่ยม แต่คนที่เด่นที่สุดในเรื่องกลับเป็นหนุ่มน้อยอู๋จิง ที่มีโอกาศปรากฏตัวบนจอน้อยที่สุด จากหนัง Tai Chi 2 เมื่อ 10 ปีที่แล้ว อู๋จิงได้ชื่อว่าเป็นดารากังฟูคนใหม่ ที่จะมาสืบทอดตำแหน่งจากหลี่เหลียงเจี๋ย มาถึงวันนี้เค้าก็ยังไปไม่ได้ไลกอย่างที่ใครหวังสักที

อู๋จิงยังคงวนเวียนอยู่กับการแจ้งเกิดใหม่ ครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่ากับงานภาพยนตร์ และมีงานหลักคืองานในโทรทัศน์ โดยวนเวียนอยู่กับบทบาทเดิมๆ ทั้งๆ ที่อู๋จิงก็เรียกได้ว่าเล่นฉากแอ็กชั่นได้ดี การแสดงก็ไม่ขี้เหร่ จนกระทั่งการพลิกบทบาทมาเล่นบทร้ายครั้งแรกใน SPL นี่อาจจะเป็น จุดเปลี่ยนครั้งสำคัญในอาชีพของอู๋จิงก็ได้ ด้วยรูปลักษณ์ที่แปลกใหม่ โกรกผมสีทอง และเป็นตัวละครไร้จิตใจ เป็นเหมือนเครื่องจักรฆ่าคน ดูเข้ากันได้อย่างไม่น่าเชื่อกับหน้าตาไสซื่อของอู๋จิง

เมื่อหนังแทน้ำหนังไปให้ดารากังฟูทั้ง แบบเต็มเม็ดเต็มหน่วย แม้กระทั่งเยิ่นต๊ะหัวที่โอกาส ปรากฏตัวอาจจะมากกว่าดาราทั้ง 3 ซะอีก แต่กลับดูไม่เด่นเลย เยิ่นต๊ะหัวเองไม่ใช่ดารากังฟู แต่ถ้าเป็นหนังแอ็กชั่นยิงปืน เค้าก็ได้ดี และเข้ากับหนังประเภทนั้นมากกว่า (คล้ายๆ กับโจวเหวินฟะ) เมื่อมาอยู่ในหนัง แอ็กชั่นเตะต่อยแบบนี้ อย่างมาก็คงเป็นได้แค่กระสอบทรายของพวกผู้ร้าย คนที่ทำหน้าที่ได้ดีกว่ากลายเป็นหลิวเจียจื่อ ดาราอาวุโสที่สักสองสามปีนี้ กลับมาแจ้งเกิดอีกครั้ง ใน SPL เค้าก็ทำผลงานได้ดีทั้งๆ ที่บทไม่มีอะไรมาก ส่วนดาราหนุ่ม Ken Chang ไม่ค่อยมีบทบาทอะไรมากนัก แต่การได้มีส่วนร่วมในฉากต่อสู้ที่ดีที่สุดในเรื่อง ก็ช่วยให้คนจำบทบาทของ เค้าได้เป็นอย่างดี

SPL มีผู้ได้รับเครดิตในฐานะผู้กำกับร่วมกันสองคง คงจะเดาได้กันได้ง่ายๆ ว่า Donnie Yen นั้นน่าจะดูในเรื่องคิวบู๊ ส่วน Wilson Yip คงจะรับผิดชอบในภาพรวมของหนัง ถึงวันนี้คงจะเรียก Wilson Yip ว่าผู้กำกับหนุ่มดาวรุ่งน่าใหม่ไม่ได้แล้ว ปี 2005 นี้ถือเป็นการครบรอบ 10 ปีของเค้าในการนั่งเก้าอี้ผู้กำกับพอดี

จุดเด่นของ Wilson Yip ก็คือ เค้าเป็นผู้กำกับที่สนใจในเรื่อง “แนวหนัง” (Genre) 10 ปีที่ผ่านมาผ่านมาแล้วแทบทุกแนว ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ผี ตลก อาญากรรม โรแมนติก กำลังภายใน แฟนตาซี การทำงานในลักษณ์นี้ ช่วยให้เค้าเข้าใจในธรรมชาติของหนังแต่ละแนวเป็นอย่างดี สำหรับ SPL นั้นแสดงออกถึงการเข้าใจในการทำหนังแอ็กชั่นของผู้กำกับ การคุมโทนเรื่อง การให้น้ำหนักกับฉากต่อสู้ คุมอารมณ์ให้หนังอยู่จุดที่ลงตัวระหว่างความสมจริงสมจัง ของการเป็นหนังอาญากรรม และความเป็นหนังแฟนตาซีของหนังกังฟู

จุดเด่นอีกประการของ Wilson Yip ก็คือการแม่นในเรื่องการออกแบบซีน ในหนังของเค้ามักจะมีซีนไครแมกซ์ หรือซีนสำคัญ ที่ผ่านการออกแบบมาดี ทั้งการเร้าอารมณ์ งานภาพ การใช้ดนตรีประกอบเสริม เรียกว่าหนังจะอุรุยฉุยแฉกมายังไง มาถึงตอนสำคัญก็มักจะเข้าท่า ถึงแม้บางครั้งจะดูเหมือนว่า ซีนไครแมกซ์ในหนังของ Wilson Yip ดูจะเน้นความเท่ห์ความเก๋ มากกว่าจะเน้นให้ความหมายจริงๆ อย่างไรก็ตามจุดเด่นข้อนี้ก็ปรากฏอยู่ใน SPL อย่างชัดเจน แต่ครั้งนี้ไม่ใช่เพียง ช่วงไครแมกซ์ ของหนังเท่านั้น แต่ในฉากต่อสู้สำคัญทุกฉาก ถูกออกแบบมาอย่างดี ทำให้ฉากต่อสู้ใน SPL ดูสดใหม่ ไม่ซ้ำซากจำเจ

ด้วยรูปลักษณ์ของหนัง SPL อาจจะต่างจากหนังกังฟูแบบเก่าๆ ประเภท หวงเฟยหง หรือ Fearless แบบหน้ามือเป็นหลังมือ แต่โดยเนื้อแท้แล้ว หนังเรื่องนี้เต็มไปด้วยองค์ประกอบที่หนังกังฟูแบบเดิมๆ ต้องมี ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการสร้างตัวละครที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยเสน่ห์ กำกับ และออกแบบฉากแอ็กชั่นให้เยี่ยมยอด แค่นี้ก็น่าจะทำให้ แฟนๆ หนังแนวนี้พึ่งพอใจ ทำเป็นลืมข้อบกพร่องเล็กๆ น้อยๆ ไปได้ และสนุกกับหนังได้อย่างเต็มที่

SPL ไม่ได้เป็นงามที่มีอะไรใหม่ ไอเดียการหยิบหนังอาญากรรมกับหนังกังฟูมาผสมกัน ก็ถูกทำซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่ามานับครั้งไม่ถ้วน SPL เป็นหนังที่หยิบองค์ประกอบเก่าๆ ในอดีตมาทำให้ดูสดขึ้น ด้วยงานสร้าง และการเล่าเรื่อง ที่ถึงที่สุดแล้วก็ต้องยอมรับว่า ทำได้เข้าท่าเข้าทางไม่เลวเลยทีเดียว
